Sunday’s late-night game saw Arizona (#27 in the CB360 Composite National Rankings) knock off the CNR’s #1 team, Arizona State (12-4), with several other noteworthy results coming earlier in the day. A pair of SEC teams – #14 South Carolina (5-3 at #7 Arkansas) and #45 Kentucky (6-4 vs. #24 LSU) – completed key weekend sweeps, as part of 13 total upsets on Sunday involving CB360 top-50 teams. Arizona is 2-2 in all games vs. the in-state rival Sun Devils this season, including a pair of non-conference midweek games at ASU (4-2 Wildcats win, 13-1 loss), along with Saturday’s Pac-10 series opener (another 12-4 game, but won by ASU).
In addition to nine of the games mentioned above, there were four other Sunday upsets of CB360 top-50 teams: Duke 11, at #20 Virginia Tech 7 … UC Santa Barbara 2, at #29 UC Irvine 1 … at Cincinnati 3, #30 Pittsburgh 1 … and Washington 3, at #35 Oregon State 2.
Sunday’s action featured the completion of nine head-to-head series between CB360 top-50 teams (plus game-2 of the ASU-Arizona series). South Carolina and Kentucky were joined by two others that swept their showdown series: #3 Virginia (vs. #36 North Carolina) and #5 Coastal Carolina (at #39 Liberty). Three of the other elite series (ALA-OlMiss; WSU-STAN; ULL-WKU) are reference above, with the others including #10 Georgia Tech holding off #13 Miami (6-3) and #21 Rice staging a huge rally to beat #40 Southern Mississippi in that series clincher (21-14). Southern Miss. held a 10-run lead (12-2) after three innings, before the Owls stormed back to post the stunning win.
All but five of the CB360 top-50 teams were in action on Sunday, spanning a total of 37 games. Four of the top-50 teams (#22 San Diego, #26 California, #37 Florida Atlantic and #49 Elon) were idle throughout this weekend.
CONFERENCE STANDINGS UPDATES
• South Carolina and Florida (both sporting 20-7 league records) now boast an insurmountable 4-game cushion on the next teams in the SEC standings (Arkansas, Ole Miss and Auburn all are 16-11). Five teams will be battling next week to fill the final three spots in the eight-team SEC Tournament field: Vanderbilt (15-10) along with four teams that all are 12-15 (Tennessee, LSU, Kentucky and Alabama). The final SEC series next week will include: Florida at South Carolina (series winner will finish atop the standings), Arkansas at Vanderbilt, Auburn at Mississippi, Alabama at Tennessee, 11th-place Mississippi State at LSU, and Kentucky at 12th-place Georgia.
• The updated ACC standings include Virginia leading at 21-6, followed by Miami and Georgia Tech (both 19-8), Florida State (18-9), Virginia Tech (16-11) and Clemson (15-12). The three teams battling for the final two ACC Tournament spots: Boston College (13-14), N.C. State (12-15) and North Carolina (11-16). The final-week ACC series include: UVa at Miami, Ga. Tech at BC, FSU at Clemson, Va. Tech at UNC, and Duke at N.C. St.
• With two weekends left in the Pac-10 (which does not sponsor a postseason tournament), ASU remains in first (16-4), followed by UCLA (13-8) and then five squads that are bunched around the .500 mark in league play: three teams at 11-10 (Stanford, Washington State and Cal), plus Arizona (10-10) and Oregon (10-11). Oregon State (9-12) could have moved into a tie with Oregon, but the Beavers lost to Washington on Sunday.
• Three teams (13-10 Oklahoma, 13-10 K-St. and 13-11 Texas Tech) are battling to finish second behind Texas in the Big 12. Texas A&M (12-11) also could end up in the #2 spot with a strong finish and some help. The final Big 12 weekend will see TT playing at 10th-place Nebraska, Oklahoma at Kansas, and K-State at A&M.
• Pittsburgh’s game-3 loss at Cincinnati (3-1) allowed #19 Connecticut to move into sole possession of first in the BIG EAST (18-5), followed closely by #6 Louisville (18-6) and #30 Pitt (17-6). The final-week series include 11th-place Seton Hall at UConn, 5th-place USF at Pitt, and Louisville at 8th-place Notre Dame.
• The Southern Conference race will come down to the final week, as two teams in the CB360 top-50 look to finsih as regular-season champion. The Citadel (#42 in the CNR) has the inside track to the title, with a 21-6 record in SoCon play while #31 College of Charleston (22-8) has completed its league schedule. In order to claim the #1 seed, The Citadel will need to win twice in its final series at 3rd-place Georgia Southern (CofC has the head-to-head tiebreakers vs. both Citadel and GS).
• Rice (#21 in the CNR) staged its monumental comeback on Sunday to clinch the top seed in the Conference USA Tournament. #40 Southern Mississippi had jumped out to a 12-2 lead on Rice after three innings in Sunday’s series finale, but the Owls stormed back for a 21-14 victory.
• Texas State and Southeastern Louisiana (which swept Stephen F. Austin) are tied for the lead in the Southland Conference (21-9), while Northwestern (La.) State (19-10) still has a shot at the Southland regular-season title. Texas State will close the regular season next weekend at home vs. 5th-place Texas Arlington, while SE Louisiana will be taking on Northwestern State in a huge home series. In other key head-to-head results earlier this season, Texas State lost 2-of-3 at SE La. and won a home series vs. NW St. (2-1).
