CB360 Composite National Rankings #12 (Top–50; 5/2/19)

May 2, 2019

With the Division I baseball postseason – which starts with conference tournaments – looming in a few weeks, various teams from across the nation are running out of time for compiling their NCAA Tournament resumes. The first May update of CB360’s exclusive Composite National Rankings is included below, with this Top–50 typical serving as a guide for following the teams in the mix for potential NCAA at-large berths (should they not win conference automatic bids).

2019Team(As always, be sure to join CB360’s 25,000-plus Twitter followers for regular updates throughout the 2019 season, via @CB360updates.)

ENTERING & Exiting – Surging Southern Mississippi (#33), which twice has dropped outside the CNR Top–50 this season, is back among the nation’s top teams, as is [44] Washington while another Northwest team (WCC leaders/#42 Gonzaga) is making its first CNR Top–50 appearance of 2019 … WAC contender [46] New Mexico State also has bumped back into the Top–50, for the third time this season.

… These are the four teams that have dropped outside the current CNR Top–50: Louisiana Tech, TCU, Texas-Arlington and Coastal Carolina. TCU (preseason #20) and Coastal (preseason #22) had been among the CNR Top–50 all season prior to this week.

• INSIDE the CNR TOP–10 – The current CNR top-10 includes: four SEC teams (#2 Vanderbilt; #4 Mississippi State; #5 Arkansas & #8 Georgia) … three Pac-12 teams (#1 UCLA; #3 Stanford & #6 Oregon State) … and one each from the ACC (#7 Louisville), Big 12 (#9 Texas Tech) & American Athletic (#10 East Carolina). Texas Tech is back in the top-10 for the first time in a month, while ECU has claimed its highest CNR position of the season. UC Santa Barbara and Texas A&M both have slipped outside the top-10 in the current CNR update.

For the sixth straight week, UCLA remains atop the Top–50. The Bruins enter the weekend with only seven losses (none in midweek games), with their recent results including a series sweep of visiting Utah and win at Pepperdine earlier this week. UCLA’s most notable 2019 results have included: an early 2-1 series win at Georgia Tech (current CB360 #11) … 2-1 Pac-12 series wins vs. Oregon State (current CB360 #6), at Stanford (current CB360 #3) and vs. Cal (current CB360 #31) … and a mid-April series sweep of visiting East Carolina (now CB360 #10). Five of UCLA’s seven losses have come vs. current CB360 Top–35 teams (also early vs. current CB360 #32 Michigan), with the only other defeats coming against Sacramento State and at crosstown rival USC.

The Bruins opened the 2019 season slotted sixth in the CNR and have lived in the top-5 ever since that preseason position. UCLA joins fellow Pac-12 powers Stanford and Oregon State, along with Vanderbilt, as the only teams to be among the CNR top-10 all season.

With a current total of 97.29 in the CNR 1000-point scale, UCLA has a comfortable margin over new No. 2 Vanderbilt, which has bumped up to its highest CNR position of the season (after being #4 a week ago). Vandy – which was No. 3 in the CNR for the first three weeks of 2019 – rolls into the weekend on an eight-game winning streak, highlighted by last week’s sweep of Auburn (then #22 in the CNR; now @29). This marks the sixth straight week that the Commodores have been among the top-5 teams in the CNR.

Current No. 3 Stanford impressively has been among the CNR top-3 for nine straight weeks (after being 8th, 8th and 7th to start the season). The Cardinal have slipped back one spot from a week ago, due to a series-opening home loss vs. Arizona. Mississippi State has jumped from 8th to 4th in the CNR, boosted by a huge midweek rivalry win in Pearl, Miss., over (CNR #19) Ole Miss, and then a huge series sweep of visiting [7] Georgia. Mississippi State (36–9) is one of six teams in DI that have yet to reach double-digit losses, along with UCLA (7), UC Santa Barbara (7), Stanford (7), Vanderbilt (9) and Louisville (9). After being 13th and 12th in the first CNR polls of 2019, Mississippi State has been 9th or better in each of the past 10 weeks.

Arkansas – the third SEC team among the current CNR top-5 – has moved up one spot for its highest CNR position (5th) of the season. The Razorbacks are coming off a series sweep of visiting Tennessee (then CNR #13; now #20). This marks the Hogs’ seventh straight week among the CNR top-10 (they opened the season 11th and then fell as low as 15th).

Current No. 6 Oregon State has dropped outside the CNR top-5 for the first time all season, after losing a couple days ago vs. visiting Gonzaga (which now has cracked the Top–50 for the first time all season). The Beavs also had suffered a midweek loss seven days earlier, at Nevada. Oregon State (CNR preseason #2) had spent three weeks during midseason in the CNR top position, followed by five straight weeks at No. 3 or 2 prior to this week. (UCLA also has been among the CNR top-6 all season … while Stanford has been 8th or better each week, and Vanderbilt 9th or better all season.)

Louisville – which had been #9 in the preseason CNR – remains No. 7 this week, two weeks removed from its season-high spot of 6th in the CNR. The Cardinals spent last weekend in a very meaningless series vs. Alabama A&M, a team that now sits 290th in RPI among 299 DI teams (those three games, all wins, actually hurt Louisville’s RPI more than helped it). Georgia has dropped back three spots in the CNR to 8th, after being swept in the showdown series at Mississippi State. UGa was 14th in the preseason CNR and dropped as low as 23rd before steadily climbing to last week’s season-high spot of 5th.

Texas Tech – which spent five weeks in the CNR top-5 during the first half of the season – has jumped up five spots to re-enter the top-10, at 9th. The Red Raiders are coming off a series sweep of Oklahoma State (then CNR #18; now #27) before splitting a midweek series vs. Western Athletic Conference leaders Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). East Carolina‘s 2019 debut in the CNR top-10 (up from 12th) comes on the heels of winning a home series vs. Tulane, followed by a pair of midweek wins at Cincinnati. ECU was 16th in the preseason CNR and had dropped to 34th in mid-March, before going on a 23-5 tear over the past six weeks (three of those losses were at #1 UCLA).

FORECASTING REGIONAL HOSTS – Based on the CNR’s current top-16 teams, the SEC could be poised to claim six of the 16 NCAA Regional host spots (Ole Miss sits at #13; Texas A&M #15) … the Pac-12 is joined by the ACC with three among the current top-16 (also #11 Georgia Tech & #16 UNC) … #14 Baylor gives the Big 12 a pair of solid Regional host candidates … and #12 UC Santa Barbara is the Big West’s lone team among the current CNR top-16 (the AAC also has one in the top-16, with ECU).

• A Closer Look at the FOUR RETURNERS/NEWCOMER – CNR current #33 Southern Mississippi was 23rd in the preseason CNR and spent a couple weeks midseason outside the Top–50 (plus the past two weeks). After a big rivalry win a couple days ago vs. CNR #19 Ole Miss, USM enters the weekend riding a nine-game win streak (also 26-9 extended streak, since early March).

WCC leader [44] Gonzaga has entered the Top–50 on the heels of a 6-3 win a couple days ago at Oregon State (then CNR #3). The Zags also swept their series last weekend vs. San Francisco and have won seven of their past eight games.

Current #44 Washington – which had been a CNR Top–50 team all season before dropping out the past three weeks – resurrected its season by winning 2-of-3 vs. visiting [15] Arizona State. … And  [46] New Mexico State – despite its current #101 RPI – grades out in several other metrics for a spot among the current Top–50. NMSU is coming off a series win at Sacramento State and midweek victory at Arizona (the Aggies next have a big WAC showdown series vs. URTGV).

• MOVERS & SHAKERS – In addition the the four teams joining the current CNR Top–50, two teams have climbed 10 or more spots within the CNR … Baylor (#26 to #14) turned in a sweep at then #46 TCU, potentially dooming the Frogs’ hopes for an NCAA at-large bid … Michigan (#42 to #32) swept its home series vs. Rutgers to stay among the Big Ten leaders.

• An Historic Pac-12 Trio? – The elite combination of UCLAStanford and Oregon State each have held down the top-3 spots in the CB360 Composite National Rankings for much of the 2019 season. Could this be the first year since 1988 with three Pac-12 teams in the College World Series (it also happened in 1976)? It should be noted that, for many years, the inherent NCAA Tournament structure likely precluded most conferences from featuring more than two CWS teams in any given season, because the earlier NCAA rounds were geographically based for many years.

> Here are the two historic seasons when three Pac-12 teams advanced to the CWS:
1976 – Arizona 5-1 (champion) … Arizona State 3-2 (semifinals) … Washington State 1-2
1988 – Stanford 5-1 (champion) … Arizona State 4-2 (runner-up) … California 0-2

Over the past 65 yrs, there have been 31 CWS with multiple Pac-12 teams:
1954 Arizona/Oregon … 1955 Ariz./USC … ’56 Arizona/Washington St …
’58+’60+’63 USC/Ariz. … ’64 USC/Arizona St … ’65 ASU/WSU … ’66 USC/Ariz. …
’67 ASU/Stanford … ’69 ASU/UCLA … ‘ 70 USC/Ariz. …  ’72+’73 USC/ASU …
’76 Ariz./ASU/WSU … ’78 USC/ASU .. ’80 Ariz./Cal … ’83 ASU/Stanford …
’85 Stanford/Ariz. … ’87 Stanford/ASU … ’88 Stanford/ASU/Cal …
’95 USC/Stanford … ’97 Stanford/UCLA … ’98 USC/ASU … 2000 Stanford/USC …
’01 Stanford/USC … ’05 ASU/Oregon St … ’07 ASU/Oregon St …
’10 ASU/UCLA … ’12 UCLA/Ariz. … ’13 UCLA/Oregon St.

COMPOSITE NATIONAL RANKINGS (CNR) CRITERIA:  Teams receive points based on their standings in each poll/rating/projection, up to the top-60 (60 pts for #1; 59 for #2, etc.). For polls involving voting points (coaches and CB) and the various RPI-type ratings, the CNR adjusts to reward teams that have larger margins in the voting/point totals (whereas two teams with nearly the same voting-point total will be closer in the CNR allotment for that poll). Note that strength-of-schedule typically is factored into RPI formulations … thus the actual SOS numbers only are used early in the season (SOS are not used in the CNR when RPI already are in the mix). For the NCAA field projections, teams are awarded CNR points based on their respective seedings, “last in” and “last out,” etc.

The polls/ratings/projections are averaged, with 40 points typically then added to each total in order to yield the 100-point benchmark. Early in the season (projected SOS; and preseason conference coaches polls) and late in the season (offense power; defense power; final-10 games), a maximum bonus/penalty of 2.0 (SOS & conf. poll) or 3.0 points (offense; defense; final-10) is factored into the formula (in that case, 38.0, or 37.0, rather than 40, is added to the poll/rating/projection avg.).

CB360’s CNR FORMULA currently includes the following 26 elements:
• National Coaches Poll (USA Today/ESPN; 42 total teams)
• National Collegiate Baseball Writers poll (48 total teams)
