I took some time off recently, so I fell off the grid for a while. Here’s a quick look at recent fall happenings.

By College Baseball 360 Editor Sean Stires

  • Oregon and Hawaii both released their 2011 schedules last week, and interestingly they open their seasons against each other. The Rainbows and Ducks will play a four game series at Honolulu’s Les Murakami Stadium February 18-20. Both teams qualified for the 2010 NCAA Tournament. The Rainbows follow that series with a four game set vs. Texas and then host Cal State Fullerton for four games a month later. Both Oregon and Hawaii will also host Wichita State in 2011.  CLICK HERE to see the complete Oregon schedule or CLICK HERE to see the complete Hawaii schedule.
  • San Diego State has released its 2011 slate as well. 2010 College World Series runner-up UCLA heads the list of non-conference opponents Tony Gwynn’s Aztecs will face next spring. Others include: UC Irvine, San Diego, Oklahoma, California, Arkansas, Oral Roberts and UConn. All of those teams made the 2010 NCAA field, with Oklahoma also advancing to Omaha. The Aztecs also host CWS participant TCU in Mountain West Conference play.
  • Mentioned last week that the Ontario Blue Jays 18U team was starting its fall exhibition tour playing U.S. college teams. Things didn’t start so well for the Blue Jays. They lost to East Carolina 24-0. Pirate LF/1B John Wooten had the only home run of the game, while OF Phillip Clark was 5-for-7 at the plate. Five ECU pitchers combined to allow just one hit with 20 strikeouts and just four walks in the 13-inning contest.

  • Texas completed its first full week of fall scrimmages last week. The Longhorns look to replace Cameron Rupp and Kevin Keyes when they take the field next spring. Head coach Augie Garrido says “The defense has an opportunity to be very strong again this year. We will be a team grounded in pitching and defense and with the new bats that play more like wood bats that will be very important.”  Garrido is referring to the new bat standards that have done away with composite bats in college baseball.  The Longhorns will scrimmage Texas State on October 10 and then host Vanderbilt for two more scrimmages Oct. 15 and 17.
