South Carolina remained unbeaten – no small feat in the young 2012 college baseball season – as the Gamecocks (cb360 #3) survived a 3-2, 11-inning game vs. #14 Clemson to open their unique three-site series (played Fri. in Charleston). The favorites among the top-50 teams in  the CB360 Composite National Rankings were winning at a high rate during most of Friday’s action, but some late upsets – including an 11-8- win by #19 Texas over #4 Rice (at Minute Maid Park) – resulted in the top-50 favorites combining to win only 73% of their Friday games (30-11, with four rainouts) … that low-70s win pct. has been fairly standard this season for CB360 top-50 favorites.  front-page photo courtesy of Miami, Ohio

South Carolina's extra-inning win added another memorable chapter to its rivalry with in-state for Clemson.

Rice and #2 Stanford (7-4 at Fresno State) both suffered their first losses of the season, as did #48 UNC Greensboro (7-3 vs. Radford). Those results – combined with some finals outside the top-50 – left South Carolina, Kentucky & Gonzaga (all 8-0) as the only Division I baseball unbeaten teams  (min. 5 DI games played) … and we’re not even finished with the third week of the season.

In addition to the SC-Clemson and Rice-Texas games, there was another marquee in-state rivalry playing out Friday in south Florida, as the #1 Florida Gators won 7-5 at #10 Miami. The favorites also won Friday’s other head-to-head battles between CB360 top-50 teams: #6 North Carolina 11-1 vs. #30 USC … #25 Baylor 4-2 vs. #31 UC Irvine … and #7 Arkansas 3-1 vs. #37 Texas Tech (“way back in the day” the Razorbacks and Red Raiders were rivals in the old Southwest Conference, until the Hogs left for the SEC in 1991). The series opener for #42 Pepperdine at #21 Louisville was rained out, with the teams slated to play a Saturday doubleheader.

In addition to the games mentioned above, Friday’s other CB36 top-50 upsets included:
• Oklahoma State 4-3 at #22 TCU
• Miami (Ohio) 9-8 at #23 Mississippi
• San Diego 5-4 vs. #32 Cal Poly
• Princeton 11-4 at #41 Florida Atlantic
• Illinois 4-0 vs. #44 St. John’s (Myrtle Beach, SC)
• North Florida 7-4 vs. #46 Georgia Southern
• Houston 7-1 vs. #47 Tennessee (Minute Maid Park)
• Central Michigan 9-1 at McNeese State

#24 California was the only CB360 top-50 team that was idle on Friday, although four games were rained out. Three top-50 squads were slated to play two games on Friday (#27 Virginia-rained out, #31 Irvine and #49 Southeastern Louisiana).

Aaron Sprecher (Arkansas)
