The Tar Heels, ranked second in Collegiate Baseball’s 2013 pre-season poll last December, moved to first after No. 1 Arkansas lost once during a 3-game series against Western Illinois. The Razorbacks slipped to second.

North Carolina won two straight over Seton Hall, 1-0 and 17-2. In the season opener, LHP Kent Emanuel became the first Tar Heel pitcher since 1967 to throw a season-opening shutout. He struck out five and did not issue a walk.

Poll Notes: In key series over the past weekend, Rice beat Stanford two of three, San Diego St. swept a 3-game series against San Diego, Mississippi swept a 3-game series against Texas Christian, and U.C. Irvine swept a 3-game series against Baylor. Three teams fell out of the top 30, including San Diego (0-3), Texas Christian (0-3) and Georgia (1-2).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

<a href="http://www.simplesharebuttons.com" target="_blank" class="ssba_tooptip" id="ssba_tooptip"">www.simplesharebuttons.com

TUCSON, Ariz. — Louisiana St. (43-16) has been ranked No. 1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll.

In one of the craziest weeks in poll history, none of the top six teams from last week escaped with a winning record as each team posted at least two losses.

Oregon, previously ranked No. 1 after winning 14 of its previous 15 games, was swept in a 3-game series at Oregon St. and slipped to 10th this week. The Ducks finished third in the Pac-12 Conference with a 19-11 record after entering last week at the top of the league with a one game lead.

LSU moved up to No. 1 despite posting a 1-2 record in the Southeastern Conference tournament. The Tigers won the regular season SEC title with a 19-11 record.

Poll Notes: Several teams have been red-hot. Kent St. has won 17 in a row, New Mexico nine straight while Oregon St. has captured seven of its last eight. Four teams fell out of the top 30 this week in Texas (0-2 last week), Louisville (1-2), Texas Christian (1-2) and Utah Valley (4-0).

New to the poll this week is New Mexico (captured the Mountain West Tournament with a 4-0 record), Vanderbilt (one of the hottest teams in the nation with nine wins in its last 10 games), St. John’s (won the Big East Tournament with four straight wins) and Georgia Tech. (36-24, won ACC Tournament as the eighth seed).

Three teams barely missed being ranked in Utah Valley (47-12, won 40 of last 41 games), Stony Brook (46-11, won 22 of its last 23), and Pepperdine (34-21, won West Coast Conference title after beating San Diego two of three at home).

The Road To Omaha leads to TD Ameritrade Park and The Dugout – located right across the street from TDA’s home plate entrance. The Dugout has a ton of authentic college baseball caps – just like the ones the players wear on the field.

If you’re going to Omaha for the College World Series make sure to make your first stop The Dugout for all officially licensed CWS apparel. If you can’t make it to Omaha just follow our red links to The Dugout!

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

It marks the second straight week the Wildcats have been on top of the poll. Over the past weekend, Kentucky beat Mississippi two of three and is No. 1 in the Southeastern Conference with a 9-3 record. The Wildcats have been paced by an attack that leads the SEC in nearly every offensive category. Kentucky is hitting .328 with a .506 slugging mark and .421 on-base percentage, belting 40 homers over 33 games. The 30-3 overall record is the best start to a season in school history, leading NCAA Division I schools in wins.

Poll Notes: Key top 30 series took place last week. Louisiana St. took two of three at Florida, Oregon won two of three at UCLA, Miami swept a 3-game series at home against North Carolina, Arizona State swept three from Oregon St. and Cal Poly swept three from U.C. Irvine. Several teams have been hot lately. Baylor has won 14 in a row and leads the Big 12 Conference with a 12-0 record.
