The formula for the current CB360 Composite National Rankings (CNR) includes five ingredients: preseason rankings by USA Today/ESPN (coaches), NCBWA (writers), Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball magazine, and College Baseball Lineup. Prior to opening day (Feb. 17), the CNR will be adjusted slightly after adding the Perfect Game preseason rankings and small bonus/penalty factors for projected strength-of-schedule and preseason conference polls (look for the final preseason CNR sometime next week, prior to opening day). This update also will serve to create a preseason projection of the 2012 NCAA field-of-64 (including automatic qualifiers that fall outside the CNR top-50). Florida received 99.86 points on the CNR 100-point scale, after checking in at #1 in all five polls.
COMPOSITE NATIONAL RANKINGS (CNR) CRITERIA: As the season progresses, CB360′s 100-point Composite National Rankings formula ultimately is centered around 15 core ingredients – plus a bonus/penalty factor based on record over final-10 games. The CNR combines a diverse collection of “experts” (ranging from coaches, various media, computer calculations and postseason projections) – to help provide a preview of teams that could be in the running for the 2012 NCAA Championship field (hypothetically 50 teams, plus 14 others from lower-rated automatic-bid conferences).

Teams receive points based on their standings in each poll/rating/projection (60 pts for #1; 59 for #2, etc.). For polls involving voting points (coaches and CB) and the various RPI-type ratings, the CNR adjusts to reward teams that have larger margins in the voting/point totals (whereas two teams with nearly the same voting-point total will be closer in the CNR allotment for that poll). Note that strength-of-schedule typically is factored into RPI formulations … thus the actual SOS numbers only are used early in the season (SOS are not used in the CNR when RPI already are in the mix). For the NCAA field projections, teams are awarded CNR points based on their respective seedings, “last in” and “last out,” etc.

The polls/ratings/projections are averaged, with 40 points typically then added to each total in order to yield the 100-point benchmark. Early in the season (projected SOS) and late in the season (final-10 games), a maximum bonus/penalty of 0.5 points is factored into the formula (in that case, 39.5, rather than 40, is added to the poll/rating/projection avg.).

Here are links to the five criteria currently used in the CNR, as of Feb. 10, 2012 (several more to be added prior to 2012 opening day):
• National Coaches Poll (USA Today/ESPN)
• National Collegiate Baseball Writers poll
• Baseball America poll
ranked among the Top Eight in the final NCBWA poll last June. Last
year’s preseason No. 1 TCU is No. 13 in the 2012 lidlifter.

The NCBWA continues its tradition of NCAA Division I polls for the 15th
year with its 2012 preseason predictions and weekly surveys. Weekly
polls will resume from Feb. 21-June 28 with the finale following the
66th annual 2012 NCAA World Series in Omaha, Neb., at two-year-old TD
Ameritrade Park.
The poll voters come from 40 college baseball writers and related media
persons from throughout the nation. After a preseason Top 35 listing,
the remainder of the polls will feature a national Top 30 beginning with
the Feb. 21 NCBWA survey.

LSU held down the No. 1 slot in the 1998, 2001 and 2009 polls. Other
NCBWA preseason No. 1 placers have been Southern California (1999),
Miami (Fla.) (2000), Stanford (2002), Texas (2003, 06, 10), Rice (2004,
07), Cal State Fullerton (2005), Arizona State (2008), North Carolina
(2009), and TCU (2011). South Carolina never had won a DI baseball crown
before capturing the trophy in both 2010 and ’11.

Last season, five different teams were rated No, 1 – TCU, UCLA, Florida,
Vanderbilt, Virginia, and the champion Gamecocks.

This preseason poll has representation by 10 different conferences and
independent Dallas Baptist among the 291 baseball-playing schools in the
2012 NCAA Division I ranks. The polls of 2011 had teams from 16
different DI conferences rated at least one week. For more information

The Gators return one of the strongest teams in college baseball history after finishing second at the CWS last season to South Carolina. Florida brings back seven players who are Louisville Slugger pre-season All-Americans, an all-time record. In addition, seven players have the potential of being drafted in the first three rounds of next June’s Free Agent Draft.

The talent level is so high that up to 14 players could be drafted next June, according to Head Coach Kevin O’Sullivan. The Gators landed Collegiate Baseball’s No. 1 recruiting class in the nation during the fall of 2009 with many of these players key components of the 2012 team. That class featured seven drafted players among the 11-man class.

Florida followed that with a recruiting class ranked fifth in 2010 with six players being drafted among the eight brought in. The headliner in that class was RHP Karsten Whitson (Chipley H.S., FL) who was a first round draft pick of the Padres. The 6-foot-4, 190-pounder’s fastball topped out at 96 mph. Last season as a freshman for Florida, he was 8-1 with a 2.40 ERA, 92 strikeouts and only 28 walks. According to news accounts, Whitson turned down a signing bonus close to $2 million to be a Gator.

Florida then landed a recruiting class ranked eighth nationally in 2011 (four drafted players).

The high profile players who are expected to go in the first three rounds of the 2012 draft include:

And you could go on and on about the superb athletes Florida can bring to the table.

Florida has extraordinary starting pitchers, relievers and closers for any potential hitting matchup. Offensively, the team hit .307 with 69 home runs last season and belted 143 doubles as the Gators averaged 6.3 runs per game. In the final 2011 national NCAA statistics, Florida ranked No. 1 in hits by its offense (755), No. 5 in doubles, and No. 5 in homers.

The pitching staff ranked No. 1 in the nation in walks allowed per nine innings at 1.82. The staff had a 2.95 team ERA and had more than a 4:1 strikeout to walk ratio (547 strikeouts and 130 walks).

Opponents had a difficult time running on the Gators last season with an All-American catching in Zunino and a pitching staff that kept runners close. Only 31 bases were stolen off the Gators last season in 47 attempts over 72 games.

For a detailed rundown on the top 40 teams, see the Jan. 6, 2012 edition of Collegiate Baseball newspaper which also includes a complete look at every NCAA Division I Conference with pre-season rankings and a listing of top players in each league, including projected pitchers and players of the year.

In addition, this issue of Collegiate Baseball features a draft preview of all potential college players who may be picked in the first two rounds of the 2012 Free Agent Draft next spring and Louisville Slugger pre-season All-American teams.

The “Collegiate Baseball” Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1958 college baseball season.
