Jeff Stevens Named Volunteer Assistant

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Jeff Stevens has been named the volunteer baseball coach at East Carolina University according to an announcement from head coach Billy Godwin Monday.

Prior to his appointment at ECU, Stevens spent part of the 2008 season as the bench coach for the Danville Braves, where he maintained opponent scouting reports, assisted with instruction of the catchers and daily practice routines and coordinated team travel arrangements to and from the field.

”We are excited to have Jeff Stevens join our staff,” said Godwin. “He understands my coaching philosophy after playing for me at Louisburg and brings a great deal of collegiate and professional experience to East Carolina.”
From 2006-2009, he spent four years in minor league baseball after signing a free agent contract with the Atlanta Braves in 2006. Stevens played in 65 career games where he batted .272 (47-for-173) with three home runs, 24 RBI, 12 doubles and scored 21 runs. During his four-year stint in the minors, he played for the Danville Braves, Rome Braves and Myrtle Beach Pelicans, while also playing independently for the River City Rascals, Wichita Wingnuts, Traverse City Beach Bums, Brockton Rox and the Fargo-Morehead Red Hawks.

Stevens played two seasons (2005-06) at the University of Pittsburgh under head coach Joe Jordano where he helped the Panthers make an appearance in the 2005 Big East Conference Championship Game after hitting six home runs, 31 RBI and 11 doubles as a junior. Behind the dish, he threw out 45 percent of would be base stealers and boasted a .979 fielding percentage. In the night-cap against Villanova on Apr. 16, 2005, Stevens belted two home runs and drove in three in a 9-8 loss in 10 innings.

In his two years with the Panthers, he started 86 games behind the plate smacking seven homers, 41 RBI, 16 doubles and 51 runs scored. Stevens collected 14 multi-hit games, 12 multi-RBI contests and hit safely in a career-best nine games from April 9-20 in 2005.

Stevens’ played one season at Louisburg College under Godwin’s direction where he batted .270 with nine home runs and 36 RBI as a sophomore. During his prep career at Dan River High School, Stevens started all four years, led his team to the 2002 Regional Championship and garnered first-team all-district, all-regional, all-metro and all-state honors as a senior.

A native of Danville, Va., Stevens earned his bachelor’s degree in social science from The University of Pittsburgh (2006) and an associate’s degree in liberal arts from Louisburg College (2004).

STARKVILLE, Miss. – A slate of 33 games at Dudy Noble Field featuring 17 different opponents highlights a challenge-filled 56-game Mississippi State University baseball schedule announced this week by MSU head baseball coach John Cohen.

“We feel like we’ve put together another very good baseball schedule, with half of our games against teams from the NCAA tournament field and 15 against NCAA Super Regional teams,” said Cohen.

“We’re excited about playing an additional game at Trustmark Park in Pearl this season and giving our great fan base in the Jackson area three week-night opportunities to see the Bulldogs play. “With an extra week added to the playing season, our schedule is spread out over 14 weeks, and now in most weeks we’ll be playing just one mid-week game.”

MSU launches its 120th season of baseball and a string of 13 consecutive games at Dudy Noble Field Feb. 19-21 with a three-game series against first-time opponent and Atlantic 10 Conference runner-up Rhode Island. State also hosts Southeastern Louisiana in a three-game weekend series (Feb. 26-28) and closes out the home stand with the second annual BankFirst Baseball Challenge (Mar. 5-7). The Bulldogs play two games each against Michigan State of the Big 10 Conference and Ohio Valley Conference foe Southeast Missouri State, coached by former Bulldog assistant Mark Hogan, in the three-day, six-game event.

The Bulldogs begin their 30-game SEC schedule March 19-21 in Gainesville, Fla., with a three-game series at Florida. State’s 15-game home SEC slate for 2010 includes series against SEC Western Division rivals Arkansas and Ole Miss and SEC East teams Georgia, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. The MSU-UT series (Apr. 16-18) will be part of the schedule for Mississippi State’s annual spring homecoming, Super Bulldog Weekend.

Mississippi State’s non-conference home schedule also includes single midweek contests against instate SWAC foes Alcorn State, Jackson State and Mississippi Valley State along with Memphis, Northwestern State, South Alabama, UAB, and Western Kentucky.

State makes a program-first trip to Corpus Christi, Texas, for its initial road competition of the 2010 season. The Bulldogs square off against Big 12 Conference power Oklahoma, UCLA of the Pac-10 Conference and tournament host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the fifth annual Whataburger Classic (Mar. 12-14). The event is held at Whataburger Field, the 5,000-seat home of the Corpus Christi Hooks, the Houston Astros’ Class AA Texas League affiliate.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to make three mid-week appearances at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Miss., in the coming season. MSU is the designated home team against Ole Miss in the fourth annual Governor’s Cup game (Mar. 30) at Trustmark Park, and later takes on Jackson State (May 4) and Southern Miss (May 5) at the home of the Atlanta Braves‘ Class AA Southern League affiliate.

Nine of MSU’s 26 baseball opponents in 2010 are newcomers to the MSU schedule, including season-opening foe Rhode Island and SEC opening weekend opponent Florida, which replaces Kentucky on the Bulldogs’ SEC league schedule in 2010.

State closes out its regular season schedule in Baton Rouge, La., with a Thursday-Friday-Saturday series against defending NCAA national champion LSU (May 20-22).

The 2010 SEC Baseball Tournament is set May 26-30 at Regions Park in Hoover, Ala., while the NCAA baseball tournament begins competition June 4 at 16 regional sites.

In all, Notre Dame will play six games (Louisville, Ohio State, Gonzaga and Kansas State) against teams that reached the 2009 NCAA Tournament.

The Irish will open the 2010 season with a two-game series against Mississippi Valley State on Feb. 19-20. The Irish and Delta Devils will first play on the MVSU campus on Friday before travelling to Pearl, Miss. for a meeting at Trustmark Park – home of the Mississippi Braves (Class AA affiliate of the Atlanta Braves) on Saturday. Notre Dame concludes the opening weekend of the season with a second game at Trustmark Park against Jackson State on Sunday.

The Irish then head down to Clearwater, Fla. for the second annual Big Ten-BIG EAST Baseball Challenge on Feb. 26-28. Notre Dame plays Illinois on Friday at Jack Russell Stadium, Ohio State on Saturday at Bright House Networks Field and Penn State on Sunday at the Naimoli Complex.

Notre Dame returns to Florida the following week for the Stetson Tournament during the first stage of its Spring Break trip (March 6-7). The Irish will play Harvard and Kansas State on the first day of the tournament before facing the host Hatters on Sunday.

Notre Dame will then head west for a mid-week, two-game series at UT-Pan American on March 9-10 before concluding the Spring Break schedule in the familiar surroundings of San Antonio (March 11-14) at Wolff Stadium. The Irish will face Bradley on Thursday, Pacific on Friday, Gonzaga on Saturday. Notre Dame will play a fourth game that weekend against one of the previous three schools depending on a round-robin finish.

Each of the 12 BIG EAST baseball teams is again scheduled to play nine others in three-game series (Notre Dame will not face Connecticut or Pittsburgh in the 2010 regular season). All but one of the series involving Notre Dame will be three-day series, with a nine-inning doubleheader scheduled for the second day of the two-day series at West Virginia (May 8-9). Fans are reminded that the road series versus Georgetown (Bethesda, Md./Povich Field; April 1-3) and Villanova (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Villanova Ballpark; May 14-16) are played at off-campus venues.

In addition to those games mentioned above, dates for Notre Dame’s other BIG EAST road series include March 26-28 at USF and April 16-18 at Seton Hall. The BIG EAST home series are April 9-11 vs. Rutgers, April 23-25 vs. Cincinnati, April 30-May 2 vs. St. John’s and May 20-22 vs. Louisville.

The BIG EAST Tournament again will be played under an eight-team format from May 26-30, at Bright House Networks Field in Clearwater, Fla. The format will mirror the College World Series with two four-team brackets playing double-elimination games on the first four days. The bracket winners then will meet in a single title game on May 30.

Seedorf

Seedorf is not your everyday two-sport college athlete.   He’s both a pitcher for the George Washington baseball team as well as a sprinter on his school’s swimming team.  In fact, Seedorf was one of the top freshman sprinters in the Atlantic 10 in the 2008-2009 season.
