Top 11 College Baseball Catchers To Watch In 2011

We are counting down to college baseball’s 2011 opening day with position-by-position looks at some of the top college baseball players to keep an eye on this year. With some 9,000 Division One players out there, we have pared the list of candidates down as best we can.

Let’s start with the guys who have their eyes on everything that happens on the diamond: Catchers.

1. Peter O’Brien – Bethune-Cookman

The Daytona Beach, FL school is small, but the 2011 list of top catchers starts with this big man. At 6’5, 220 lbs., O’Brien is one of many on this list whose size defies what used to be the mold of the prototypical sub-6’0 squatty catcher. His bat defies most pitchers’ best pitches as well. O’Brien batted .386 with 56 RBIs, while swatting 20 home runs with an 1.193 OPS as a sophomore last season. His efforts helped the Wildcats to an 18-0 MEAC record. O’Brien was also the USA Collegiate National Team’s catcher over the summer.

2. Jett Bandy – Arizona

Bandy batted .356 with six home runs and 42 RBIs in 2010, up from .299 with 39 RBIs as a freshman in 2009. His .982 OPS, helped by a team-high 23 doubles, was the second-best on the Wildcat roster. In fact, he has stroked a whopping 44 doubles in 108 games in his first two seasons in Tucson. The junior was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 41st round coming out of high school, but the preseason All-American looks to be a much higher selection when this June’s draft roles around.

3. James McCann – Arkansas

Catchers are known as “field generals”, but it says something that, as a sophomore, McCann was named a captain of a 2010 Razorback squad that was coming off a trip to the College World Series. The 6’3 backstop started 35 games as a true freshman, including all four of Arkansas’ games in Omaha. He kept that going last year by starting in all but six of his team’s 64 games. The junior batted .286 with nine home runs and 34 RBIs. The 2008 draft pick of the Chicago White Sox has committed just five errors in 108 career games to date.

4. Mac Doyle – Wofford

Doyle grew up in the shadow of Coastal Carolina Conway, SC. However, a move across the Palmetto State has served him well. Doyle smacked a grand slam against Virginia Tech in his first game in a Wofford uniform, and he hasn’t looked back since. Doyle totaled eight home runs and 30 RBIs in 2009 and then batted .375 with 16 HR and 75 RBIs and a 1.204 OPS last year. His long ball total was nearly a fourth of his team’s home run production. After off-season shoulder surgery, Doyle is expected to start the season at DH and transition to catcher as his health allows.

5. Tyler Ogle – Oklahoma

After serving primarily as a part-time DH and pinch-hitter as a freshman in 2009, Ogle took over a more full-time role behind the plate last year. Ogle was OU’s top pinch-hitter in ’09, batting .545 (6-for-11). His overall numbers were even more impressive last year, after batting .336 with 11 HR and 36 RBIs en-route to the program’s first College World Series berth in more than a decade. He made a splash last year by going 5-for-9 in Oklahoma’s Super Regional upset at Virginia. He started behind the plate in all three of those games as well as all four of the Sooner’s games in Omaha.

6. C.J. Cron – Utah

The big man (6’4-230) has split time catching and at first base over his first two seasons at Utah, but no matter where he’s played he has hit…a ton. Cron led the Utes with 11 home runs, 19 doubles and 58 RBIs while batting .337 as a freshman in 2009. He was also the only player in the nation to get three hits in a game off future 2009 overall #1 draft pick Stephen Strasburg. He suffered no sophomore slump last year, batting .431 with 20 HR, 16 doubles and 81 RBIs (all team bests). He also managed an astounding 1.304 OPS. The reigning Mountain West Conference Player of the Year also played for the USA Collegiate National Team last summer.

7. Matt Rice – Western Kentucky

The senior has started in 118 of his team’s 120 games over the last two seasons, and he has been a vital cog in the Hilltopper offense. Rice batted .399 with 10 home runs and 72 RBIs for WKU’s 2009 NCAA Regional team. His sophomore campaign was also highlighted by a school-record 31-game hitting streak. For an encore, the 6’3 backstop hit .369 with 10 HR, 16 doubles and 65 RBIs (all team-highs) last season. He even had three triples and wound-up with a 1.031 OPS.

8. Robert Brantly-UC Riverside

A guy like Brantly might get lost in the shuffle a little in the always competitive Big West Conference, but he made a name for himself as a sophomore in 2010. Brantly was named to the All-Big West First Team after batting .373 with seven home runs, 18 doubles and 39 RBIs for the 32-win Highlanders. Brantly was one of 16 semi-finalists for the Johnny Bench Award last year. The 6’2 junior was also named Baseball America’s top prospect in the Northwoods Summer League.

9. Derek Trent – East Tennessee State

Trent was a 2010 Johnny Bench semi-finalist as well. In 2010, his .348 average made him one of five Bucs to hit .344 or better on the season. Trent launched 13 home runs with 66 RBIs and 17 doubles during his junior campaign. Along with Trent’s bat, ETSU has four players who combined to hit 71 home runs in 2010. He was also one of four Bucs to start all 60 games last season.

10. Kevan Smith – Pittsburgh

Smith split time behind the plate in 2010 with Cory Brownsten, who is now gone. The 6’4, 240 lb. senior earned All-Big East First Team recognition after more than doubling his RBI total to 46 in 2010. He also batted .361 with five home runs and 16 doubles. His efforts helped his team to a 38-18 mark that just missed an NCAA, thanks in part to St. John’s Big East Tournament championship run. Smith looks to pick-up where he left off at the end of a 2010 season that ended with a 20-game hitting streak.

11. Coley Crank – Michigan

Crank was Michigan’s primary DH last season, but he looks to get more playing time behind the plate this year after the departure of 2010 Johnny Bench semi-finalist Chris Berset. Crank got his sophomore season started on the right foot in ’10 when he cranked three home runs in one game on opening day against Jacksonville State. The 6’0, 220 lb. junior batted .324 while leading the Wolverines with 14 HR and 65 RBIs. He was the only player on his team to reach double-digit home runs.

Worth noting…

Curt Casali – Vanderbilt

Casali was Vanderbilt’s primary catcher two years ago, but he delayed arm surgery until after last season so that he could primarily DH and play first base. The move paid-off in spades for both he and his team. He batted .309 with eight home runs and 42 RBIs while helping the Commodores reach the Super Regionals. Casali had an RBI and scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning of Vandy’s Regional title game win over Louisville. He also went 7-for-14 with six RBIs, three doubles and a home run in three Super Regional games against Florida State. Now a senior, Casali hopes to get back on the field and behind the plate again this season.

39 Players Invited – 22 Will Make Final Roster…

DURHAM, N.C. – USA Baseball announced Thursday the 39 players who have been named to the 2010 Collegiate National Team Trials roster. Trials are scheduled to be held July 6-11 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex (NTC) in Cary, N.C.

Of the 39 invitees, 36 will compete for a spot of the final 22-man roster, while three players were named as alternates. Eleven of the players will be attending trials on the heels of helping their respective schools advance to the 2010 College World Series (CWS) in Omaha, Neb.

Sophomores Gerrit Cole (UCLA), Sonny Gray (Vanderbilt), Brad Miller (Clemson) and Kolten Wong (Hawaii) all return from the 2009 Collegiate National Team in attempt to join Team USA for the second year in a row. The roster also includes CWS Most Outstanding Player Jackie Bradley, Jr. (South Carolina) as well as CWS participants Taylor Featherston (Texas Christian), Nolan Fontana (Florida), Sean Gilmartin (Florida State), Brian Johnson (Florida), Andrew Maggi (Arizona State), Steve Rodriguez (UCLA), Kyle Winkler (Texas Christian) and alternate Mike Zunino (Florida). Cole and Miller also competed in this year’s CWS.

The quartet of returnees helped the 2009 Collegiate Team to a 19-5 overall record and the 2009 Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline World Baseball Challenge crown in Prince George, British Columbia (Canada). Cole and Gray combined to post a 7-1 record on the mound with 73 strikeouts, while Miller and Wong started a combined 32 of 44 games, collecting 28 hits, scoring 28 runs and driving in 16.

Also named to the roster was Baseball America First Team All-America and College Player of the Year Anthony Rendon (Rice). The sophomore third baseman was a semifinalist for the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award for the nation’s top amateur player and is a finalist for the Dick Howser Award, recognizing college baseball’s player of the year. Other Baseball America All-Americans invited to trials include First Teamer Taylor Dugas (Alabama), Ryan Wright (Louisville) of the Second Team and Cole, C.J. Cron (Utah), Alex Dickerson (Indiana), and Noe Ramirez (Cal State Fullerton) from the Third Team. Invitee Anthony Meo (Coastal Carolina) was also a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist.

Following the trials and training period in Cary, the U.S. will play a five-game series against Korea before squaring off against a Japanese Collegiate All-Star Team in a one-game, international friendship competition in Omaha’s Rosenblatt Stadium on July 21. From there, the team will travel to Taipei, Taiwan for a four-game series against Chinese Taipei at Tien-Mu Stadium beginning July 25.

Team USA will close its summer season at the FISU World University Championships in Tokyo, Japan, from July 30-Aug. 7. The U.S. has won the last three FISU Worlds (2004, ’06, ’08), while host nation Japan will be looking for its first title.

Catcher Could Join College Coach This Summer

SALT LAKE CITY, UT – Utah sophomore baseball player C.J. Cron has received an invitation to the 2010 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Trials, head coach Bill Kinneberg announced today.

“This is a great opportunity for C.J. to put his skills against the best players in country,” Kinneberg said. “If he makes the team, what an experience that will be for him.”

Cron, who plays at both first base and catcher, currently leads the Mountain West Conference with a .429 batting average and is second in the conference with a .725 slugging percentage. He is tied for the MWC lead with seven home runs, ranking third with 32 RBI.

USA Baseball will invite up to 38 college players to the trials, scheduled for July 5-11 in Cary, N.C. The final 22-man 2010 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team will be selected on Sunday, July 11. The team will embark on a tour which includes a domestic series with Korea, a game against Japan at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb., and the FISU World University Championship in Tokyo.

Kinneberg is the head coach of the 2010 Collegiate National Team.

SLU’s Brock, ‘Bama’s Morgan Headline Primetime Performers Weekly Honor Roll … CollegeBaseball360.com has announced its fifth group of Primetime Performers, for action during the third week of March. St. Louis University senior first baseman Danny Brock (Loveland, Colo.) is the CB360 Primetimer Player of the Week while Alabama sophomore lefthander Adam Morgan (Marietta, Ga.) is the Primetime Pitcher of the Week.

Brock and Morgan are joined by 14 other clutch players from throughout the nation in comprising the CB360 Primetime Performer Weekly Honor Roll for May 15-21.

BROCK – son of 10-year Major Leaguer Greg Brock (’82-86 Dodgers; ’87-’91 Brewers) – played a lead role in SLU’s doubleheader sweep of a Kansas team that was #25 in the CB360 Composite National Rankings (KU was fresh off a pair of wins at national power LSU). During the pair of convincing wins (12-8/8-5), the 3-hole hitter Brock smacked his 10th home run of the season while batting 4-for-8, reaching base two other times (BB, HBP) and factoring directly into half of the Billikens’ 20 runs (6 RBI, 5 R).

The 6-1, 210-pount righthanded hitter led the way for a SLU offense that roughed up a pair of the KU pitching staff’s top righthanded starters – junior T.J. Walz (a 2009 all-Big 12 Conference performer) and senior Cameron Selik. Walz was touched for eight runs and nine hits in 6.1 innings (2BB-6K) while Selik surrendered seven runs and eight hits in 6.0 IP (2BB-7K). Walz was the Jayhawks’ game-1 winner one week earlier at LSU while Selik had started and won the series clincher vs. the defending national champions.

Brock’s three-run homer in the bottom of the 7th put SLU ahead for good in the opener vs. Kansas (3-for-4, 5RBI-3R-BB) and he tacked on another strong effort in the game-2 victory (1B-RBI-2R-HBP). He ended the week with a .405 season batting average and was the Atlantic 10 Conference leader in home runs (10), RBI (36), slugging percentage (.892), walks (17) and runs scored (24), plus third in the A-10 with a .525 on-base percentage. He entered this week with an eye-popping 1.417 season “OPS” (on-base plus slugging), through 20 games.

MORGAN delivered #21 Alabama’s 4-1 opening victory in its series win vs. a Vanderbilt team listed 17th in the CB360 composite rankings. The 6-1/180-pound lefthander shut out the Southeastern Conference’s top offense through six innings, ultimately allowing only on run on six hits and three walks through 6.2 innings (3 Ks). The Commodores entered the game with a gaudy .352 team batting average while averaging nearly nine runs and 12 hits per game in the first 17 games of the season (VU was 15-2 before losing to Morgan and the Tide in game-1). Morgan did not allow a Vanderbilt runner to reach second base until there was two outs in the seventh, which also is when VU managed its only extra-base hit of the day vs. Morgan (an Anthony Gomez double; VU’s five other hits vs. Morgan included four 2-out singles with nobody on base).

In addition to the challenge of facing the Vanderbilt hitters, Morgan had the added pressure of knowing that VU sophomore RHP Sonny Gray (a projected 1st-rounder in 2011) would be facing his teammates. Morgan proved up to the task, rolling up a 1-2-3 inning to start his outing, then allowing a leadoff walk to Jason Esposito but quickly erasing the runner on a pickoff play. Brian Harris had a 2-out single vs. Morgan in the third but was stranded at first, as was cleanup hitter Andrew Giobbi after his single in the fourth.

Gomez managed a 2-out single in the fifth, but was forced out at second. Bryan Johns earned a leadoff walk vs. Morgan in the sixth, but he was caught stealing and Giobbi later was stranded at first following his 2-out single. Vanderbilt’s only run came in the seventh, courtesy of two more 2-out hits.

Similar to the weekly awards presented on sister site CollegeSoccer360.com, the CB360 Primetime Performer honors various players based on any/all of the following “primetime” criteria…not solely based on raw stats.

Primetime Performer Award Criteria
• Must have been playing for or against a CB360 top-50 team (in the Composite National Rankings) or performed a high level in a game that could be key to a team’s conference/NCAA postseason qualification.
• Involved in clutch performances, such as late game-winning hits, noteworthy comebacks, game-changing plays, team leadership, etc.
• Performing at a top level against a team rated highly nationally (or within its conference), with bonus consideration given for key performances away from home field and vs. traditional rivals.
• Overcoming adversity or extreme circumstances (for the team and/or individual).
• Any accomplishment that is rare, historic, record-setting, etc., on a national level.

The 16 honorees include three two-way players (RHP/RF; CF/RHP; 1B/RHP), four other pitchers (three of them lefties), three catchers, two first basemen, a shortstop, leftfielder, rightfielder and DH. The selections feature a 5th-year senior, three seniors, seven juniors, four sophomore and the freshman Refsnyder.
