Larkin will work primarily with the infielders and hitters, assist with the team’s strength and conditioning program, and monitor the academic eligibility of his student-athletes.

“I am excited to have Shaun Larkin back in the Matador Baseball program,” stated Curtis. “He brings additional credibility to our staff as someone who has not only won a Big West Championship in the Matador uniform, but also earned his degree at Cal State Northridge.”

“In addition to Shaun’s experience coaching both professionally and internationally, he has been exposed to two of the best baseball coaches in Southern California in Scott Pickler at Cypress College and Dave Demarest at La Quinta High School,” added Curtis.

The Matadors’ starting second baseman on the 2002 Big West Championship team, Larkin started in all but one of his 57 games played and finished the season batting .361 with 16 doubles, 15 home runs, and 49 RBIs. Helping the Matadors finish the season with a 41-17 overall record, he earned All-Big West First Team honors for his role in helping his team advance to the NCAA Regionals that season.

Selected in the ninth round of the 2002 Major League Baseball Draft by the Cleveland Indians, Larkin was an integral part of six playoff teams and two championship teams during his six years as a professional. He ultimately advanced to the Triple-A level as a player before the Indians presented Larkin with an opportunity to become an assistant coach.

Once assigned to the Indians’ Double-A affiliate, Larkin assisted both management and his coaching staff with player development and was the team’s first base coach for two seasons.

In addition to his time as an assistant, Larkin also served as both the hitting and third base coach for the Leones de Leon, a professional winter ball team located in Leon, Nicaragua in 2007.

In 2009 Larkin returned to Southern California as an assistant varsity baseball coach at Newport Harbor High School. As the primary hitting instructor and infield coordinator he introduced a program-wide paradigm shift that not only focused on development of his player’s physical skills, talents, and mental acuities.

Larkin held weekly classroom sessions that focused on the evolution and expansion of his team’s leadership skills for use both on and off the diamond. Due to these unique character-building opportunities, the Newport Harbor baseball team reached the playoffs for the first time in 20 years.

An assistant coach at Orange Coast College during the 2010 season, Larkin primarily worked with the infielders and hitters and aided head coach John Altobelli with recruiting in and around Orange County before returning to his alma mater as an assistant coach.

“He brings with him a wealth of recruiting contacts from a deep Orange County talent pool, and experience from winning championships at every level that he has been involved with,” stated Curtis. “I feel this makes him the right guy to help instill a championship culture with our student-athletes here at CSUN.”

“It’s great to have a member of the 2002 Big West Championship team return to Northridge to show our student-athletes first-hand what it takes to become successful both in the classroom and on the diamond,” stated Athletic Director Rick Mazzuto.

Larkin currently resides in Northridge, Calif.

NORTHRIDGE, CA – Matt Curtis, who for the last ten years has been a major contributor in one of the West Coast’s most successful college programs, has been hired as head baseball coach at Cal State Northridge. Curtis comes to CSUN from Fresno State where he served as assistant coach, a program that has won five consecutive Western Athletic Conference titles, made four NCAA tournament appearances in the last five years, and won the 2008 College World Series.

Matt Curtis

“First, I would like to thank Dr. Koester, Rick Mazzuto, Janet Pinneau, Tom Ford and the rest of the administration at Cal State Northridge who were involved in the selection process,” stated Curtis. “I am honored that they believe I am the right person to lead the Matador Baseball program going forward. While I have developed a lot of deep relationships within the Fresno State athletic community, this is an opportunity that I have been preparing for, and I look forward to developing similar relationships at Cal State Northridge.”

“After an extensive search that produced a number of first-class candidates, the hiring committee and I felt that Curtis possessed the experience and energy needed to help the baseball program become one of the most successful teams in the Big West Conference,” stated Cal State Northridge Athletic Director Rick Mazzuto.

“With four top-20 ranked recruiting classes, numerous players who have received All-Western Athletic Conference (WAC) or All-American honors, a National Championship, and reputation for pushing his students to become just as successful in the classroom as they are on the diamond, I am thrilled to have Curtis as a member of our staff.”

During his ten seasons in Fresno, Curtis compiled a 362-272-0 record. In addition to the National Championship in 2008, he helped coach the Bulldogs to five consecutive WAC titles, four straight NCAA Regional appearances, and playoff appearances in five of his ten seasons.

“We want to create and sustain a culture of winning, competing for the Big West Conference championship and the (NCAA) post-season. We want to enhance the tradition of the Cal State Northridge baseball program,” stated Curtis. “I know there is a strong core of returning players in the program, and I look forward to working with them to establish the foundation for the Matador program going forward. We want to prepare them to be successful on and off the field, and to be leaders in their lives beyond college athletics. We also look forward to recruiting talented young men with strong character to help us achieve our goals.”

Curtis first joined the Fresno State coaching staff as a student assistant for one season in 1998 before returning to the Bulldog bench two years later.

From 2000-02, he served as volunteer assistant coach, working primarily with the catchers and hitters in conjunction with his duties as first base coach. With his catchers earning All-American honors during his two seasons as a volunteer, Fresno State wasted no time in recognizing his efforts and was named the team’s assistant coach July of 2002 by two-time National Coach of the Year Mike Batesole.

Included in the last eight recruiting classes that Curtis was responsible for assembling and developing are 40 first-team All-WAC, nine WAC Pitchers or Players of the Year, 12 All-Americans, five Freshman All-Americans, 39 overall draft selections, and five first round draft picks. In addition, four of his recruiting classes have gained top 20 national rankings and the 2010 recruiting class contains four recruits drafted by professional organizations who will end up on campus at Fresno State.

“I think the university’s location in the heart of the San Fernando Valley is a definite asset to the program. It’s a talent rich area and is a tremendous area to recruit,” said Curtis. “The first order of business in recruiting is to energize the local baseball community and try to keep the best players close to home.”

During the last three seasons, Curtis also served as the team’s pitching coach, third base coach, and defensive instructor of catchers, helping produce three All-WAC pitchers, and one WAC Pitcher of the Year. Five of Curtis’ pitchers were drafted by professional organizations with another six signing professional contracts during his three-year tenure as pitching coach.

Curtis was also responsible for written communications with the Dugout Club, a fan based organization established to increase enthusiasm for Fresno State Baseball, and provide additional program resources. In addition to coordinating the annual golf tournament and “Meet the Team” dinner, he collaborated with alumni and members of Fresno’s business community to organize additional fundraising events.

“We are going to put a product on the diamond that is well prepared, exciting and fun to watch. I can tell you that we are going to do things the right way. The student-athletes are going to be successful in the classroom and give back to their community. We want to create an environment that the students, alumni, administration, faculty, sponsors, and fans of Matador Athletics will be proud of.” stated Curtis.

As the primary individual responsible for maintaining and monitoring the eligibility of his student-athletes at Fresno State, Curtis has seen one of his players receive Academic All-American honors, another 41 named to the Academic All-WAC Team, with numerous players each season receiving academic recognition from the university.

A four-year letterwinner at Fresno State, Curtis started 155 games for former head coach Bob Bennett. Curtis can be found on numerous program Top-ten lists including games played (215), at-bats (761), hits (235), runs (144), doubles (52), walks (116), and RBIs (127). Curtis ranks fourth all-time with 52 career doubles, 22 of which were earned in 1995 when he finished atop the WAC statistics in that category.

During his time as a Bulldog student-athlete, his baseball team competed in four NCAA Regionals and won two WAC Championships in 1993 and 1995. A two-time WAC Scholar-Athlete Award recipient (1994-95), Curtis also earned WAC Academic-All Conference and WAC All-Conference Catcher accolades shortly after the 1995 season concluded. For his accomplishments and successes earned as a student-athlete and coach at Fresno State, Curtis was selected in the 2003 class of inductees into the Fresno State Baseball Hall of Fame.

After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting in 1999, Curtis signed a professional contract with the Anaheim Angels organization. In his inaugural season as a professional, Curtis set a single season Midwest League record for doubles and was named to Baseball America’s Minor League All-Star Team. During his five seasons of professional baseball, he received the Ray Perry Award – given to Northern California’s most outstanding first year minor league player – and reached the Double-A level as a member of both the Anaheim Angels and Cleveland Indians organizations.

A native of Visalia, Calif., Curtis earned his Master’s degree in Business Administration in 2001 from Fresno State. Curtis and his wife Kimberlee have three children – daughters Lauren and Allison and one son, Jacob.

“It is an exciting time for my family, a fantastic opportunity, and I am ready to move forward and invest the time needed to create a winning baseball program at Cal State Northridge,” said Curtis.

Northridge, CA - Steve Rousey, who recently completed his eighth season (2010) as head coach of the Cal State Northridge baseball team, will not return next year, Director of Athletics Rick Mazzuto announced Wednesday.

Irvine, Calif. — Following a season that once again concluded in Omaha, Neb., at the College World Series, Cal State Fullerton was selected to capture the 2010
Big West Baseball Championship, a title they lost to UC Irvine last season, according to the Big West Conference preseason poll conducted by the league’s nine head coaches. The Titans, who have claimed at least a share of seven of the last 11 titles and a conference-best 14, nabbed seven first-place votes for a total of 79 points and were followed by defending conference championship UC Irvine, who picked up two first-place votes en route to a 71 point total. Rounding out the top three were the Cal Poly Mustangs, sitting third with 60 points.

The Titans, under third-year head coach Dave Serrano, finished the 2009 campaign with a 47-16 overall record and a 17-7 conference mark, good enough for second place in the Big West. Cal State Fullerton swept both the NCAA Regionals and Super Regionals to advance to the College World Series for its 16th appearance.

Fullerton has a wealth of returning talent that includes an entire weekend pitching rotation, a closer, and a couple of top-round draft pick defenders up the middle to
go along with a Top 5 recruiting class. Slated to headline the Fullerton rotation are Daniel Renken, Noe Ramirez and Tyler Pill, while Nick Ramirez returns as the team’s closer. All four of the hurlers achieved All-American status a year ago and accounted for 34 wins, seven saves and a 3.24 combined ERA.

The Anteaters of UC Irvine are coming off one of their best seasons in program history, which witnessed the ‘Eaters capturing their first league crown with an outstanding 22-2 mark. UC Irvine also became the first team in conference history to go undefeated at home during league play and boasted the second-best conference winning percentage in Big West history at .917. Like Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine welcomes back a majority of their pitching staff, including All-Americans Daniel Bibona and Eric Pettis. Rejoining Bibona and Pettis on the mound in 2010 are Preseason All-America Christian Bergman and Crosby Slaught.

Cal Poly looking to continue its success of last season, was selected third in this year’s poll. The Mustangs concluded 2009 with an overall mark of 37-21, a third place finish in the Big West at 14-10 and made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since moving to Division I in 1995. Leading the charge offensively in 2010 is Big West Freshman of the Year Matt Jensen who was sidelined late in the season due to a fractured clavicle. Prior to his injury he sported a .375 batting average with 15 doubles, nine home runs and 53 RBI and recorded a 23-game hitting streak, the third longest in Cal Poly Division I history. Also coming back from injury this season is pitcher Steven Fischback, who in 2008 finished seventh in the Big West with 79 strikeouts and posted a 5-4 record with a 4.55 earned run average.

Long Beach State secured the fourth slot with 50 points, UC Riverside landed in fifth after receiving 48 points and UC Santa Barbara grabbed 36 points to take the sixth spot. Pacific locked down seventh with 30 points, followed by Cal State Northridge’s eight-place point total of 19. Rounding out the nine-team field with 12 points was UC Davis, who is playing in just its third season at the Division I level.
