CAPE COD, Mass. – Commissioner Paul Galop has announced the 2011 Cape Cod Baseball League All-League Team.

Heading the list of positional players is CCBL Most Valuable Player Travis Jankowski (Stony Brook) of Bourne, who hit .329 with 22 RBI for the Bourne Braves, along with batting champion Stephen Piscotty (Stanford) of Yarmouth-Dennis, who hit .349, edging out fellow All-League catcher Dane Phillips (Oklahoma State) of Chatham by a mere .0002. Phillips led the league with 34 RBI.

Top Pro Prospect Award winner Victor Roache (Georgia Southern) of Cotuit was also named to the All-League team after batting .316 with six homers and 28 RBI, while sportsmanship winner Patrick Cantwell (Stony Brook) of Bourne was also selected after batting .277 with eight RBI.

Pacing the All-League pitchers were CCBL Top Pitcher award recipient Ryan Eades (LSU), who was 3-0 with a 0.84 earned run average, along with top relief pitcher Trevor Gott (Kentucky) of Orleans, who compiled a 1.29 ERA with 12 saves, Scott Firth (Clemson) of Hyannis, who was 3-0 with a 1.15 ERA, Joe Bircher (Bradley) of Falmouth who was 2-2 with a 1.44 ERA and a league-leading 48 strikeouts and Chris Overman (North Carolina St.), who was 2-0 with a perfect 0.00 ERA

Bourne led all teams with four All-League selections, while Hyannis, Falmouth and Wareham had three apiece and Brewster, Chatham, Cotuit, Harwich, Orleans and Y-D had two each.

“We’re pleased to announce the Cape Cod Baseball League 2011 All-League Team,” said Galop. “The balance of representation from all our ten teams highlights the incredible parity that the CCBL continues to display. This 25-man roster is made up of players whose performances exceeded expectations and whose statistics led the CCBL in all categories.

“Our head coaches played a major role in recommending this team and head statistician Chris Thoms did a remarkable job compiling and analyzing statistics for all categories. We believe this 25-man roster is truly representative of the extraordinary talent that was here on Cape Cod this past summer and we congratulate each and every member for what has become a memorable summer for each and every member of this team”.

After Cotuit watched Y-D score 36 runs in its two-game sweep of Orleans, Andriese asked to take the ball in the first game of the championship. He did not disappoint, holding the Cape’s most feared offense to a meager three hits in a complete-game shutout. Thanks in part to Andriese’s workhorse performance, Cotuit was finally able to hoist the Arnold Mycock Trophy after falling short as Western Division champs in 2008 and 2009.

The sophomore at UC Riverside is no stranger to summer league baseball. Before this past season, he was named Pitcher of the Year in the West Coast League, the Northwest’s version of the Cape League, where he went 5-0 with a 0.78 ERA.

The Cape League’s biggest bat has, fittingly, captured the last Coca Cola Player of the Week. Jordan Ribera (Fresno State), who was the Cape’s regular- and post-season RBI leader, the regular season home run leader, and the post-season home run co-leader, earned the award for a predictably stellar postseason.

The junior Bulldog has made his power known to the nation in the collegiate ranks over the course of his NCAA career. He finished last season with a NCAA-best 27 homers, and batted .343, earning him a Second Team All-America designation.

SOUTH YARMOUTH —- The Cotuit Kettleers rode the arm of Matt Andriese (Cal Riverside) to a 3-0 win over Yarmouth-Dennis on Wednesday in Game 1 of the best-of-three Cape Cod Baseball League Championship Series at Red Wilson Field.

Andriese pitched a complete-game shutout to put his team one win away from the title. The series switches to Lowell Park for Thursday’s Game 2.

“I felt really good,” he said. “My rhythm was good. I threw a lot of strikes.”

That he did. The Cotuit starter tossed 120 pitches, and 85 of them crossed the dish for strikes. He lost the no-hit bid in the fifth inning on Ben McMahan’s (Florida) two-out single. He allowed just three hits, while striking out four, walking one and hitting one.

He appeared to be tiring in the eighth when he walked one batter and hit another. He then allowed a base hit to Joe Panik (St. John’s) to start the ninth. With action in the bullpen, Andriese forced the league’s home run and RBI leader, Jordan Ribera (Fresno State) into a 1-6-3 double play.

“I just hope he enjoyed pitching today as much as his five coaches and his teammates enjoyed watching him pitch,” Cotuit field manager Mike Roberts said.

The Kettleers starter shut down a powerful Y-D offense that had inflicted a beating on its previous playoff opponents; whipping them by a combined score of 49-17.

What little offense was provided during the game was done so in the first three innings. The Kettleers played their usual game of small ball and scored early. Deven Marrero (Arizona State) picked up the first RBI when he laid a bunt down the first base line, scoring Jordan Leyland (UC Irvine), who led the game off with a single. Brooks Pinckard (Baylor) picked up another RBI on a fielder’s choice, scoring Chad Wright (Kentucky). Marrero’s RBI single in the third completed Cotuit’s scoring.

“We can not hit with Y-D,” Roberts said. “We’re a small-ball team. We have to play our style.”

After a rough start, Red Sox pitcher Randy Fontanez (South Florida) settled down and went eight innings, allowing just the three runs on eight hits.

“It was a pitcher’s day,” said Roberts, “and not a hitters day.”

“Their guy out-pitched us. They played some small ball and we didn’t handle the ball,” Y-D field manager Scott Pickler said. “We’ve got to win (Thursday). That’s all.”

Andriese’s impressive start almost did not exist. When the sun rose on game day, the Kettleers had yet to select a pitcher. Roberts had five pitchers in mind and had all of them text him last night to check on their arms.

“His text came from the heart,” Roberts said. “It was different. It wasn’t ‘I want to pitch.’ His words were ‘Coach, if you give me this opportunity, I think I’m capable of helping the team.’”

After the team arrived, Roberts had to make a decision. He made the correct choice.

Their appearance in the championship round marks the third in three years for the Kettleers, who are hoping the third time really is the charm.

“I’m trying to really not coach and just let the players play,” Roberts said.

(Cape League Release)

ORLEANS —- You never quite know what result a big decision can have. For Kolten Wong (Hawai’i), the decision to forgo Team USA to play with the Orleans Firebirds this summer resulted in the MVP trophy.

Kolten Wong is the first player from Hawaii or the WAC to be named Cape Cod MVP.

Despite missing the last four games of the regular season due to an injury, Wong was honored with the Pat Sorenti Most Valuable Player Award.

Wong certainly warranted the accolade. He finished third in batting average (.341), second in OBP (.426), fourth in slugging (.452) and tied for second in stolen bases (22). The second baseman also made just four errors in 145 chances (.972).

He excelled in every facet of the game. His enthusiasm provided a spark for the Firebirds whether he was batting leadoff or third in the order. He also kept fans on the edge of their seats with his daring base-running and his eloquent, but vicious swing.

“He can really hit and he disrupts baseball games when he gets on base,” Orleans field manager Kelly Nicholson said. “He’s going to steal a base, he can hit a home run, he can drive the ball the other way, he can push and he can drag.”

The combination of all those elements made Wong one of the most exciting players to watch this summer. And it almost wasn’t to be. He came to Cape Cod with a decision to make —- to play for his country or for the Firebirds.

“I thought he was the best player in the league,” Y-D field manager Scott Pickler said. “The numbers he put up, the way he played second base and the way he went about his business. He’s a baseball player.”

Nicholson could not have been happier with the way things worked out for his second baseman.

“I’m glad this summer turned out the way it did for him because it was a tough decision,” he said. “It’s going to be fun to follow him and see where he ends up.”

Wong, who has enjoyed two outstanding years at Hawai’i, is poised to make a high appearance in next year’s amateur draft as well on the fields of big league ballparks across the country.

In winning the award, he joins last year’s recipient, Kyle Roller (Bourne, East Carolina) and a host of current major leaguers, including Evan Longoria (Chatham ’05), Carlos Pena (Wareham ’97) and Jason Varitek (Hyannis ’93). He is also the first player from an East Division team to win the award since Longoria and the first Orleans player since Lance Niekro (Florida Southern) in 1999.

Scott Pickler

Pickler led the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox to the league’s best record and the East Division championship for the second consecutive year. The division title is the fifth for Y-D under his direction.

Pickler has guided the Red Sox to league championships in 2004, 2006 and 2007. The Cape is not the only place he wins; he has also captured four titles at Cypress (Calif.) Community College. The veteran coach is known as a talent developer, and more than 80 of his players have been selected in the MLB draft.

“Winning Manager of the Year is because I have (assistant coaches) Taylor (Cameron), Larry (Mahoney), Adam (Petke) and Dez (Chris Podeszwa),” said Pickler, who became the first field manager to capture the award in back-to-back seasons and only the third to win the award three times.

Don Reed won in 1989 with Yarmouth-Dennis and then received the honor again in 1991 and 1993 while wearing a Wareham uniform.

The Manager of the Year award is named after Mike Curran, a former assistant sports editor of the Cape Cod Times. Curran started as a Cape League scorer and publicist in the early 1970s and was president from 1976-1977. He is partially responsible for creating a nationwide recruiting system to bring college players to the Cape and give the league national prominence.

Pickler has been honored three times in the last four seasons. He has been head coach at Cypress Community College for 24 years and Y-D field manager since 1997.

“Pick” led the Red Sox to a 27-17 record, finishing one point ahead of Brewster for the best record to gain home field advantage throughout the postseason.

“It has nothing to do with me,” he said. “It’s having the right kids who play hard all year long and having great assistant coaches.”

Pickler gives credit for his team’s success to his players and coaches. He says even though he gets the award, it really belongs to the members of his team. He won’t even take credit for bringing his team closer together. According to Pick, that happened with a sixth run ninth-inning against Wareham just weeks before the season ended.
