<a href="http://www.simplesharebuttons.com" target="_blank" class="ssba_tooptip" id="ssba_tooptip"">www.simplesharebuttons.com

COLUMBUS, OH - Alex Wimmers has been chosen as the best pitcher in college baseball for the 2010 season. Ohio State’s junior All-American, who fashioned a 9-0 record and a 1.61 earned run average this season, was named by the College Baseball Foundation (CBF) as its National Pitcher of the Year Friday in Lubbock, Texas.

“I was thrilled, absolutely thrilled to learn I had won the award,” Wimmers said. “It just goes to show that hard, hard work truly can pay off.”

Wimmers, just the second winner of the CBF’s National Pitcher of the Year Award after Stephen Strasburg won it last year, was chosen for the honor over an all-star line-up of outstanding collegiate pitchers, including finalists Drew Pomeranz, who was 9-2 with a 2.24 ERA this season for Mississippi, and Chris Sale, the Florida Gulf Coast hurler who was 11-0 with a 2.01 ERA.

Alex Wimmers (OSU photo)

The 10 semifinalists included Arizona State’s Seth Blair, Cal State Fullerton’s Noe Ramirez, Coastal Carolina’s Anthony Meo, Texas’ Chance Ruffin, Texas A&M’s John Stilson, Virginia’s Danny Hultzen and TCU’s Matt Purke.

“It’s such a great honor to be chosen by the College Baseball Foundation for this award,” Wimmers said. “It’s hard to explain what I am feeling. To think that Stephen Strasburg won this award last year and now I’m getting it this year. It’s really crazy, isn’t it? This is just so unbelievable and it truly is an honor.”

The Foundation, in conjunction with the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association of America, announced its National Pitcher of the Year winner in Lubbock, Texas, as part of its College Baseball Awards Show. The event also included the naming of the Dick Howser Award for the National Player of the Year and the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award. The awards followed the College Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony that took place July 1 in Lubbock.

Bob Todd, Ohio State’s retiring head coach, attended the awards show in support of his ace hurler.

“This is an outstanding award for a very deserving person,” Todd said. “Alex has worked extremely hard and it has made him the pitcher that he is today. I think there would be so many more accolades that would have been bestowed upon Alex if he hadn’t have gotten hurt and missed a month of the season. But all-in-all, I think this is absolutely great for our baseball program at Ohio State to have a national award winner in Alex Wimmers.”

Ironically, the CBF Hall of Fame’s inaugural induction ceremony in 2008 included Ohio State’s Steve Arlin, who set the standard of greatness for an Ohio State pitcher. Arlin, Ohio State’s first two-time first-team All-American, helped lead the Buckeyes to back-to-back appearances at the College World Series in 1965 and 1966 and to its only national championship in 1966.

For his efforts Arlin was honored as the Most Valuable Player at the College World Series in 1966 and is a member of the All-Time College World Series Team and the College World Series Legend’s team. His Ohio State jersey, No. 22, was retired in 2004.

Wimmers, the first Buckeye to win one of the national season-long awards and the second two-time first-team All-America, certainly did his best to reach the rare air of Arlin. After pitching out of the bullpen as a freshman in 2008, Wimmers put together two outstanding seasons as an Ohio State starter.

He first came onto the college baseball national scene in 2009 when he went 9-2 with a 3.27 ERA and was named first-team All-America by PING! Baseball and second- or third-team All-America by five other awarding publications. He threw the first nine-inning no hitter in Ohio State history May 2 vs. Michigan with 14 strikeouts. He also picked up back-to-back complete game victories with 29 combined strikeouts vs. Indiana (14 Ks) and Pittsburgh. He also got the win vs. No. 2 Miami and he was named Big Ten Conference co-Pitcher of the Year. He led the Big Ten with 136 strikeouts and with a .211 opponents’ batting average.

In 2010, Wimmers led the Big Ten in ERA and opposing batting average (.218) while posting his 9-0 mark despite missing three starts with a hamstring injury. He was 4-0 with a 1.15 ERA in five Big Ten starts and he was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Year at the conclusion of the season, becoming the first back-to-back award winner in Big Ten history.

Career-wise Wimmers, who was drafted in the first round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft by the Minnesota Twins, ranks among Ohio State’s all-time Top 5 in four key statistical areas and he is sixth in another. He is fourth at Ohio State in fewest runs allowed (81) and he is fifth in strikeouts (273), fewest earned runs allowed (71) and fewest hits (173). He is also sixth in earned run average (2.94). His 18 career victories rank 23rd. His strikeout total is also good for a tie for 16th-place all-time in the Big Ten Conference.

The College Baseball Foundation was established in 2004 and has inducted 57 greats into its College Baseball Hall of Fame in Lubbock. The group promotes the highest ideals and recognition of greatness on college baseball diamonds in the 150 years since the first intercollegiate contest in 1859 between Amherst and Williams.

By Collegebaseball360.com Editor Sean Stires

I will be checking in throughout the day and into tonight with notes and quotes and happenings from Saturday’s action. The first game of the day is TCU vs. Florida State, with UCLA facing Florida in the night cap. Don’t forget you can follow results with recaps and more throughout the series on our CWS Scoreboard page.

Game 1 Final- TCU 8-11-2, Florida State 1-4-0 WP-Matt Purke (15-0), LP-Sean Gilmartin (9-8)
Postgame Video

Game 2 Final - UCLA 11-18-2, Florida 3-6-1 WP-Trevor Bauer (11-3), LP-Alex Panteliodis (11-3)
Postgame Video

It’s a fairly overcast day in Omaha as we get ready for the start of the TCU-Florida State game. The clouds mixed with a nice breeze make it pretty comfortable for fans who are used to sun and sweltering humidity at this time of year.

Saw a lot of LSU t-shirts and tailgate canopies and the like on the streets and in the parking lot when I was making my way into the stadium today. I don’t know if they actually made their way here from Louisiana or if they’re just local LSU fans…which there are a lot of here in Omaha.

TCU’s Jim Schlossnagle has been named the NCBWA’s National Coach of the Year. Schlossnagle’s Horned

Jim Schlossnagle

Frogs (51-12) have already set a school record for wins in a season, while reaching the CWS for the first time in program history.

The NCBWA also named Texas pitcher Chance Ruffin the National Stopper of the Year. Ruffin’s 1.11 ERA ranks second in the nation. He was 6-1 with 14 saves this season before Texas was eliminated by TCU in last week’s Super Regional in Austin.

One more announcement today from the NCBWA: Drew Pomeranz of Ole Miss, Miami’s Yasmani Grandal and Anthony Rendon of Rice are the three finalists for the Dick Howser Trophy. The winner will be announced at a ceremony on July 2 in Lubbock, TX.

TCU is not only making its first CWS appearance, it’s also its first ever game vs. Florida State. In fact, any meeting with the other two teams in its bracket, Florida and UCLA, will also be TCU’s first game against those schools.

Longtime official scorer Lou Spry is working his overall 600th CWS game today in some capacity.

CWS Scorer Lou Spry

The Horned Frogs can flat-out hit. TCU scored five runs on six hits in the first inning off FSU starter Sean Gilmartin, who was not fooling anyone. The lowest batting average by TCU’s starting nine is Aaron Schultz’s .303. They were hitting ropes off Gilmartin in the three innings he worked. Even Bryan Holaday’s 2nd inning infield single was a liner that hit Gilmartin. The lefty was uninjured.

Schlossnagle got bold in the third inning and it paid off…at least a little. With runners at second and third with one out TCU 9-hole batter Brance Rivera plated Jantzen Witte with a squeeze bunt, but the play didn’t end there. Taylor Featherston, who was at second base, never broke stride and tried to score from second base. He was thrown out at the plate to finish a 1-3-2 double play on the throw home by first baseman Jayce Boyd.

Matt Purke was just electric. The freshman did walk four to tie a season-high, but he was untouchable when he wanted (and needed) to be. His final line: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 UER, 7 K, 4 BB, 116 pitches, 66 strikes.

TCU had four sac bunts in its win over Florida State. The Horned Frogs kept bunting, even in the late innings when they were up 6-1. Jason Coats said after the game that it’s “near automatic” for them to bunt with runners at first and second and no outs. They now have 61 sac bunts this season.

Local authorities have put-up a temporary chain link fence around the Rosenblatt Stadium and parking lot perimeter. There are just a handful of gates where fans can go in and out.

Florida and UCLA’s first round Saturday match-up was a rematch from the Women’s College World Series first round. The UCLA softball team beat Florida 16-3 en-route to winning the program’s 12th softball national championship.

From CB360 co-editor Pete LaFleur on our Twitter feed today: “Do we really need to be reminded constantly about the differences between college and pro baseball?” I didn’t get to hear exactly what he was talking about, but it’s not the first time ESPN has done this. Yes, there are subtle differences. Yes, the bat goes “PING”, but it’s still baseball!

Erin Andrews isn’t Dancing With The Stars anymore. She’s back doing sideline reporting at the CWS for game two (Kyle Peterson had game one). This could end-up being her last event for ESPN, because her contract is up at the end of the month.

In both of Saturday’s games the first two batters reached base safely for all four teams in the first inning. The lead-off man scored for each of the four teams.

Holy den Dekker! Florida center fielder Matt den Dekker made a

Matt den Dekker

sensational over the shoulder and sliding catch to rob Bruin right fielder Brett Krill of extra bases in the bottom of the fourth inning. If you didn’t see it watch Sports Center Saturday night and Sunday morning. It’s a web gem.

When Trevor Bauer struckout Jonathon Pigott to start the bottom of the 7th it was his 10th of the night as well as his third straight at that point, but it was also his 151st strike out of the season. The total breaks an 18 year old school record.

Bauer finished his night with 11 strike outs and two walks in 7 IP. He also

Trevor Bauer

balked twice to become the fifth pitcher in CWS history to balk twice in the same game.

I’ve been extremely impressed with UCLA’s offense. I never would have thought that the team that would have double digit hits and runs on day one would be the Bruins…especially with 3-hole hitter Tyler Rahamatulla out with the broken wrist. The Bruins hit the ball hard all night and scored at least a run in all but the second inning.

CB360 Podcast with TCU catcher Bryan Holaday

The Skinny

Texas: (#2 National Seed) A year after finishing as the runner-up at Omaha not much has changed for Augie Garrido’s Longhorns. There was no signature 25-inning Regional game this year, but Texas still swept through the Austin Regional with wins over Rider, Louisiana-Lafayette and Rice by outscoring those three 19-3. That 3-0 stretch followed three losses at the Big 12 Tournament, which was the team’s only 3-game losing streak this year.

The Longhorns lead the nation in both ERA (2.44) and fielding percentage (.980). Closer Chance Ruffin leads the nation with a 0.73 ERA. He has 14 saves and a 6-1 record in 36 appearances. Taylor Jungmann (7-3, 2.10), Cole Green (11-1, 2.63) and Brandon Workman (12-1, 3.43) are nearly unrivaled as a weekend rotation, but the rotation they’ll see this weekend will give them a run for their money.

Texas is batting just .289 heading into the weekend, but Russell Moldenhauer’s .341 average leads six regulars who are hitting .305 or better. The home run total (79) is up from a year ago, but small ball is still in play. Texas ranks 4th in the nation with 72 sac bunts, with Brandon Loy’s 16 sac bunts tied for 6th nationally. The Longhorns set an NCAA single game record with seven sac bunts in a Super Regional game vs. TCU last year.

TCU: TCU has hosted Regionals the last two years going a combined 6-0 in the process. This is the second straight and overall Super Regional appearance for Jim Schlossnagle and the Horned Frogs. TCU was in the conversation for one of the top eight national seeds, but finds itself at #2 national seed Texas for Super Regional play for a second straight year.

While pitching is the biggest strength of the Longhorns, TCU’s staff gives them a run for their money. Starters Matt Purke (Louisville Slugger National Freshman of the Year), Kyle Winkler and Steven Maxwell are a combined 35-2 with 293 strikeouts and just 88 walks. Meanwhile, Kaleb Merck (2-1, 1.08) and Tyler Lockwood (6-2, 2.06) have combined for eight save in 43 relief outings.

Jason Coats leads the TCU offense with a .377 avg. and 65 RBIs, Matt Curry has 17 HR and a team-best 12 SB and catcher Bryan Holaday (podcast above) provides the leadership to go along with his 12 HR.

The Question: Will anyone score any runs?

The NCAA won’t release its official statistics leaders until after the conclusion of the Final Four, so here’s our “unofficial” look at some individual category leaders. Pitching Statistics are still a little hard to qualify, so for now we’re sticking with wins, saves and strikeouts. We’ve added slugging percentage, on-base percentage and a “Triple Crown Watch” this week to the offensive categories.
