<p><strong>TUCSON, Ariz. —</strong> <strong>Arizona St</strong>. is ranked No. 1 for the third straight time in <em>Collegiate Baseball </em>newspaper&#8217;s NCAA Division I baseball poll.</p>
<p>The Sun Devils (23-0, 3-0 Pac-10 Conference) swept a 3-game series at home against <strong>California </strong>during the past week. The 23 consecutive wins to start the season is a new school record, surpassing the 21-0 start by the 1961 squad. ASU is hitting .358 as a team and averaging 9.39 runs per game with 64 doubles, 22 triples, 18 home runs and 54 stolen bases. The pitching staff has a 2.88 ERA and has struck out 221 batters and walked only 62. Only 10 stolen bases have been allowed by Sun Devil pitchers and catchers over the 23-game span.</p>
<p><strong>Poll Notes: </strong>Several other schools have been red hot. <strong>UCLA </strong>is also unbeaten at 20-0 which is the best start in school history. The Bruins have outscored their opposition, 181-53. Other notable winning streaks include <strong>Pittsburgh </strong>(11 in a row), <strong>Georgia Tech</strong>. (7), <strong>Louisiana St.</strong> (6), and <strong>Vanderbilt </strong>(6). <strong>Arizona </strong>has won 15 of its last 16, <strong>Western Kentucky</strong> 11 of its last 12 and<strong> The Citadel</strong> 7 of its last 8. Teams that fell out of the poll this week include <strong>Alabama</strong> (0-4 last week), <strong>Ohio St.</strong> (1-3), <strong>North Carolina</strong> (1-3) and <strong>Auburn </strong>(3-2). New to the poll this week is <strong>Kansas St.</strong> (19-3), <strong>Western Kentucky</strong> (20-5), <strong>Pittsburgh </strong>(18-4) and<strong> The Citadel</strong> (18-6).</p>
<p>The <strong>Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll</strong> is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.</p>
