Knights Set For 37 Home Games…

UCF (Central Florida) is the final Conference USA school to release its 2012 college baseball schedule. The Knights play 21 of their first 24 games at home, beginning with a Feb. 17-19 series against Long Island.

After a Feb. 22 midweek game at Florida, the Knights return home for a Feb. 24-26 three game series against Boston College. They host South Florida (USF) on Feb. 28 and then head to Daytona Beach for a game against Bethune-Cookman the next day.

A March 2-4 three game home series against Siena is followed by a marquee two game set vs. Florida State March 6 & 7. UCF also hosts three game series against UMass and Harvard before visiting USF on March 20.

Other notable non-conference action includes a game at Miami as well as home and home contests with both Florida Atlantic and Stetson.

Conference USA play opens March 23-25 when the Knights host East Carolina. Other conference home series are against Alabama-Birmingham, Memphis and Rice. Conference road series are at Houston, Southern Mississippi, Tulane, and Marshall.

New Addresses, More Uncertainty For Many Teams…

It’s all about football (and BCS money), but the latest round of conference shuffling – brought to you by the Big East Conference – will ripple through college baseball as well.

As of this writing, an official announcement is apparently imminent that Boise State, San Diego State, Houston, Central Florida (UCF), and Southern Methodist (SMU) will all join the Big East to bolster its sinking BCS football status. Boise State and San Diego State would join as football only members, while the other three would be full fledged Big East members in all sports. The planned moves would go into effect for the 2013-2014 academic year.

We’re not going to go into all of the football implications. You can find that on 800 other sites. We also won’t touch the irony that the new look “Big East” will include schools that are not even remotely in the “east”.

The question we are most concerned with is:  How does all this affect college baseball?

First, neither Boise State nor SMU have baseball teams, so those schools are out of this discussion (how SMU does not have a baseball team though is a head-scratcher). So, let’s start out west and work our way back east to look at how this latest conference shuffle will affect the college baseball landscape.

San Diego State currently plays in the Mountain West Conference in all sports. Since the Aztecs are joining the Big East in football only, the other sports are in line for a new landing spot. According to multiple reports, that landing spot will be the Big West Conference.

It’s a move that would make perfect sense for Tony Gwynn‘s baseball team. The farthest his team would travel for a conference game would be Hawaii (set to join the Big West for the 2013 season) every other year, rather than current jumps to Colorado Springs, Albuquerque and Ft. Worth.

Gwynn would also add another big name to the coaching ranks in the conference. The Big West already includes another former Big Leaguer – Ed Sprague (Pacific) – as well as Hall of Famer Mike Gillespie (UC Irvine) and a hot up and comer – Rick Vanderhook (Cal State Fullerton) – who is returning to his roots after helping UCLA reach the College World Series as an assistant.

The conference that will feel the most ill effects from all the maneuvering is the Mountain West. The conference, which has been somewhat underrated when it comes to college baseball anyway, has just five teams – Air Force, New Mexico, San Diego State, TCU, and UNLV – that will field baseball teams in 2012.

TCU, which was originally set to join the Big East, will leave the Mountain West after the current season to align with the Big 12. Fresno State and Nevada have agreed to leave the WAC for the MWC next year, but they could easily reconsider that move considering there will be no Boise State and no San Diego State in two years. And don’t forget, Utah left the MWC to help form the Pac-12 this season, while BYU left the conference for football independence, while baseball and other BYU sports are now in the WCC.

As it stands, the Mountain West would be left with just Air Force, New Mexico, UNLV and possibly Fresno State in 2014. Odds are those schools will either all be somewhere else or the MWC will align with another conference – the WAC? – before then.

From a baseball standpoint, it’s just a shame. The MWC, especially with the addition of Fresno State, was shaping into what would have been a great conference. The Bulldogs won the 2008 national championship, TCU went to Omaha in 2010, New Mexico is coming off back-to-back NCAA appearances, and Utah and San Diego State have each gone to NCAA regionals in the last three years as well.

Moving east…

Houston and UCF will leave Conference USA to join the Big East in all sports, including baseball starting with the 2014 baseball season.

Houston has experienced an NCAA drought in recent years. The Cougars were a win away from a Super Regional in 2008, but that is their only NCAA appearance over the last five seasons. Houston improved from 25 wins to 27 victories in Todd Whittling’s first season as head coach in 2011.

UCF has made upward movement in head coach Terry Rooney‘s three seasons as head coach after helping LSU reach the CWS as an assistant in 2008. The Knights were one of four C-USA teams to receive an NCAA bid in 2011.

The move to the Big East for those two schools comes as Syracuse and Pittsburgh head to the ACC and West Virginia exits to the Big 12. Syracuse does not have baseball, while neither Pitt nor WVU have sniffed the NCAA Tournament in nearly two decades.

The argument can be made that the addition of two southern schools like UCF (located in Orlando) and Houston will make the Big East a better baseball conference. That argument was made when South Florida (USF-located in Tampa) joined the Big East after the 2005 season, but it hasn’t turned out that way.

USF has not received an NCAA bid in its six seasons as a Big East member. The Bulls compiled a 7-10 record at the Big East Tournament from 2006-2010, but did not qualify for the Big East’s postseason tournament in 2011.

Meanwhile, northern teams in the same conference have been more successful in that stretch. Notre Dame, Rutgers, Seton Hall, St. John’s, and UConn (all dugout space heater spots in March and early April) have all received NCAA bids since 2006, while UConn advancing to the program’s first Super Regional this past season. Louisville also earned NCAA bids from 2007-2010, but the Cardinals are the only Big East school not in Florida to play home games in February.

The losses of Houston and UCF leaves C-USA with seven baseball playing schools, while the net for the Big East is unchanged at 12 baseball schools (lose Pitt and West Virginia and gain UCF and Houston).

Other smaller conferences are set to shuffle as well. UT San Antonio and Texas State (as well as Denver, which doesn’t play baseball) will soon join the WAC. Houston Baptist will join the Southland after leaving the Great West Conference (a conference that does not an automatic NCAA bid), while Oral Roberts will leave the Summit League for the Southland Conference.

Dallas Baptist, which went all the way to a Super Regional in 2011 as a DI Independent, joined the Missouri Valley Conference this year, but will leave to join the WAC for the 2012-2013 season.

Nebraska is also in its first season in the Big Ten after leaving the Big 12 after last season, while Missouri and Texas A&M will jump to the SEC next year. As of now, the only change in the ACC will be the addition of Pitt.

The X-factor in the entire situation is the BCS contract will likely be redone prior to the 2013-2014 season, so this latest move by the Big East might not even keep the conference in the BCS.

Confused?

The only certainty in any of this is – there is bound to be much more uncertainty before the smoke clears.

Here’s a look at how many of the aforementioned conferences are currently aligned and how they will potentially look in 2014. Keep in mind that seemingly every move is tentative and all of this could be moot before any of the changes actually take place.

29 Home Games Set For Golden Eagles…

Southern Mississippi has released its 2012 college baseball schedule. The Golden Eagles open their season Feb. 17-19 when they host a three game series with Nicholls State.

After a Feb. 22 game at Southeastern Louisiana, USM returns home to host five straight games. The quick homestand starts with a three game series vs. Troy and continues with single games against Mississippi Valley State and Alabama. USM returns the trip to Tuscaloosa on March 13.

The Golden Eagles head to Auburn, Ala. March 2-4 for three games against three different teams – Auburn, Purdue and Charleston Southern.

Other notable non-conference opponents include Louisiana (Lafayette), Ole Miss, Mississippi State, LSU, Louisiana-Monroe, and South Alabama.

Conference USA play begins March 23-25 with a home series against Houston. Other conference home series are against Central Florida, Memphis and East Carolina. Conference road series are at Rice, Marshall, Tulane, and Alabama-Birmingham.

31 Home Games Set For Owls…

Rice has released its 2012 college baseball schedule. The Owls open the season February 17-19 with a three game home series against Florida International. Their season-opening eight-game homestand continues with two games against New Mexico State and a three game series vs. Dallas Baptist.

The Owls hit the road for the first time when they visit Houston on Feb. 28. They also play in the Houston College Classic March 2-4 at Minute Maid Park.

After a road game at Texas State and a home game against Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Rice heads to Palo Alto, Calif. March 9-11 for three games against Stanford. The Cardinal played three games at Rice last year. Arizona plays two games at Rice’s Reckling Park on March 13 & 14.

Conference USA play begins March 23-25 when the Owls visit Memphis. Other conference road series are at Tulane, Marshall and Central Florida. Rice hosts Southern Mississippi, East Carolina, Houston, and Alabama-Birmingham in C-USA play.

East Carolina has released its 2011 college baseball schedule. The Pirates open the season February 18-20 with a three game home series against Youngstown State and then hit the road the following weekend with a three game set in Charlottesville, VA against Virginia.

ECU opens Conference USA play by hosting Memphis March 25-27. Other home C-USA series are against Rice, Central Florida, and Southern Mississippi. They hit the road for conference series against UAB, Houston, Marshall, and Tulane.

The Pirates have notable mid-week non-conference games at North Carolina and NC State.

In all, ECU will play 14 games against teams that earned a bid to the 2010 NCAA Regionals; 30 against teams with 30-plus wins, nine that topped the 40-plus win plateau and eight that finished ranked in the national polls.

The Conference USA Tournament is May 25-29 in Pearl, MS.

Eleven Regular Season Games On Preliminary TV Slate

IRVING, Texas –Conference USA has announced its preliminary baseball television schedule for the 2010 season.  The schedule currently features games to appear nationally on CBS College Sports as well as regionally on Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS), Bright House Networks and Cox Sports Television.  Additional games remain a possibility and will be announced at a later date.

“Conference USA has established itself as a national power in baseball and we are pleased that more of our fans will be able to watch our teams play this season on television,” said Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky.

Included in the current schedule are 11 regular season games as well as a live broadcast of the C-USA Baseball Tournament Championship Game on Saturday, May 29.  Additional C-USA Championship games may be added to the television schedule.

Conference USA’s 15th baseball season gets underway on February 19.  The conference tournament is scheduled for May 26-30 in Houston, with UH serving as the host for the new six-team, pool-play format.  C-USA’s nine baseball schools have produced 62 NCAA appearances and nine College World Series teams over the past 14 seasons.

Speed Over Power:  Houston hit just 25 home runs last year, with Chris Wallace (9 HR) being the only player to hit more than 4 home runs.  However, the Cougars had 69 stolen bases on the season.

Solid Nucleus:  Wallace (.285, 34 RBIs) is one of three Houston players who played at Cape Cod last summer.  He’s joined by Blake Kelso (.335, 2 HR, 23 RBIs, 12 SB) & Caleb Ramsey (.332, 4 HR, 46 RBIs, 16 SB) both played for Yarmouth-Dennis.  Zak Presley (.301, 28 RBIs, 17 SB) is back as well.

Mound Presence:  Memphis returns 11 pitchers (including all five starters) from last year’s staff.  Among the returnees Marcus Barnes and Heith Hatfield combined for 31 appearances and five saves in 2009.  The three pitchers the Tigers lose combined for two wins last season.

Experience Counts:  The Tigers have seven starters back in the field.  The group combined for just 15 homes but still had 72 doubles.  Drew Martinez (.309, 11 doubles) and Adam McClain (.288, 11 doubles) were both named to the C-USA All-Freshman team.

New Digs:  Memphis will play home games in the new 2,000 seat FedEx Park beginning in February.  The $3 million dollar project is part of the renovation of Nat Buring Stadium, which was built in 1972.

Rice

Freshman Phenom:  Anthony Rendon (.388, 20 HR, 72 RBIs) had the Rice team triple crown as a true freshman in ’09.  He had an 1.163 OPS.

Supporting Cast:  Rice always has a line-up filled with tough outs, and 2010 will be no exception.  Back with Rendon in the order are Steven Stultzbaugh (.324, 8 HR, 31 RBIs), Rick Hague (.319, 9 HR, 57  RBIs), Chad Mozingo (.319, 8 HR, 50 RBIs) and Diego Seastrunk (.288, 7 HR, 45 RBIs).  Seastrunk hit .353 as a sophomore, but struggled a bit last year due to injury last year.

On The Mound:  Mike Ojala (5-0, 2.17 ERA) and Taylor Wall (7-6, 3.72 ERA)are back to lead the rotation.  The Owls lose Ryan Berry (7-2, 2.42 ERA, 4 CG).

More Than A Legacy:  Matt Reckling (2 2, 5.84 ERA, 2 SVs) made 20 appearances with 3 starts.  Rice’s home field is named after his grandfather, T.R. Reckling, who played for the Owls from 1952-’54.

Southern Mississippi

Power Outage:  UCF loses Brandon Romans and Kiko Vazquez who combined to hit 27 home runs in 2009.

Not So Fast:  Romans is back on the UCF coaching staff this season as the volunteer assistant.

Tools Of Distinction:  Soph. catcher Beau Taylor was named a Freshma All-American last season, making him the first UCF catcher to ever earn the honor.

Brandon Romans

played three seasons with the Black and Gold, hitting .314 for his career with 17 home runs and 77 RBI.

“I am extremely excited about the addition of Brandon Romans to our coaching staff,” said Rooney. “Brandon was a tremendous collegiate player and understands the expectations of this program. To have another alum on our staff means a great deal to me. Due to his diverse playing background, he will assist in a variety of on-field areas, while serving as our camp coordinator.”

Romans saw time in 131 career games with 103 starts as a catcher and outfielder for the Knights from 2007-09. He came to UCF after one year at Birmingham-Southern, and progressed every season leading up to his standout senior campaign. Last year, he was selected to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List, which is given out to the nation’s top catcher. Although he spent most of his time in the outfield, he went on to tie for sixth in single-season history with 14 homers.

Also in 2009, Romans was voted onto the All-Conference USA Second Team by going .333 at the plate with 49 RBI, 116 total bases and a .595 slugging percentage. He walked 25 times and struck out on only 15 occasions. Romans held a .329 average as a junior while posting a .989 fielding percentage, and went .274 at the dish in 2007.

After his UCF career, Romans suited up for the Rockford RiverHawks of the Frontier League in the summer of 2009.

UCF now has two former players working on the staff, as Nick Choto (2007-09) was named the director of baseball operations last summer.
