SOUTH YARMOUTH, MA —- For two straight years, Cotuit field manager Mike Roberts led his Kettleers to the Cape League championship series, only to watch them be swept aside by Harwich in 2008 and Bourne in 2009. But in Game 3 of this year’s best-of-three playoff series, everything went the Kettleers’ way as they beat the Y-D Red Sox 6-0 at Red Wilson Field in front of 5,391 fans.

Cotuit head coach Mike Roberts gets a post game shower.

The victory brought home the Arnold Mycock Trophy, named after long-time league and Cotuit volunteer Arnold Mycock, who presented the award to the Kettleers after a nearly three-hour game. Cotuit last won the championship in 1999.

Jordan Leyland (UC Irvine) was named playoff MVP after hitting .461 with one home run and six RBI in seven games. Michael Yastrzemski (Vanderbilt), grandson of Red Sox Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, had two hits, including a homer, while Joey Hainsfurther (Baylor) collected three hits. Right-hander Nick Tropeano (Stony Brook) earned the win, pitching 6.2 hitless innings after taking over from injured starter Brady Rogers (Arizona State).

“When Rodgers’ back stiffened there was no doubt in my mind that if Nick Tropeano finished that ball game the Cotuit Kettleers would win,” Roberts said. “He is Long Island tough.”

Tropeano dominated the game as though he had something to prove after Roberts pulled him five innings into Monday’s playoff game against the Wareham Gatemen. His combination two-seam fastball and sinker silenced the potent Red Sox offense.

“I think the blessing today was that Nick Tropeano got so mad at me he probably did not like me at all from Monday until today,” Roberts said. “He was really upset.”

“I thought I had more in me,” Tropeano said. “But if he hadn’t pulled me then I wouldn’t have been able to pitch in the championship, so no hard feelings towards that anymore. I feel great, just given the opportunity to go and pitch in the championship is definitely a great feeling.”

Tropeano struck out seven and walked three. His performance culminated with a strikeout of pinch-hitter Matt Watson (Boston College), provoking the Kettleers to leap over the fence of the dugout and dog pile the 6-4 right-hander.

Yastrzemski, who struggled throughout the postseason, hit his solo home run in the fourth.

“I was just trying to put the barrel on the ball,” he said. “I’ve been struggling lately and it felt good to finally score a run. We just got a good group of guys and everyone really put their full effort forward and no one left anything on the field.”

“There’s not a player in this league that has more pressure on him than Mike Yastrzemski,” Roberts said. “He is a wonderful young man and whoever’s taught him to play the game, they taught him to play it the right way. He just will surprise you.”

Deven Marrero (Arizona State) got the game started for Cotuit in the second inning, doubling to centerfield and advancing to third on Yastrzemski’s bunt. Marrero scored the first run on a base hit by Hainsfurther.

“Deven Marrero had as much to do with our winning this game today as any player on this field,” Roberts said. “He took (a pitch) right under the heart, and he could have easily not played the last five innings and come out of the game. We didn’t have another infielder and that young man sucked it up for our entire club, and he was hurting really bad.”

Everything seemed to favor the Kettleers on this day. In the third inning, catcher James McCann (Arkansas) doubled and scored on Leyland’s single. McCann, who was a pillar behind the plate this season, added a run on the board in the fourth with a sacrifice fly that scored Hainsfurther.

The Kettleers continued tacking on runs. Yastrzemski singled home John Hinson (Clemson) in the fifth, and Hinson doubled in Leyland in the sixth to cap scoring.

“I’d say it’s definitely one of the biggest team wins we’ve had,” Tropeano said. “Even the guys on the bench, everyone contributed somehow, and I can’t explain the feeling right now. It’s just a good feeling.”

COTUIT —- The Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox took a 2-1 victory from the Cotuit Kettleers on Thursday in Game 2 of the Cape Cod Baseball League Championship Series to stay alive for another day.

“We didn’t know what would happen,” Y-D field manager Scott Pickler said. “That was our goal, just to score the first run. That’s a very good team in the other dugout.”

The Red Sox host the Kettleers on Friday at 3 p.m. at Red Wilson Field to decide the Cape League championship. Y-D last won the Arnold Mycock Trophy in 2007, while Cotuit was the champion in 1999.

With the combined pitching power of Austin Wood (St. Petersburg) and AJ Achter (Michigan State) for Cotuit, and John Leonard (Boston College), Anthony Desclafani (Florida), and Douglas Baxendale (Arkansas) for Y-D, batters struggled to generate runs. But a two-error fifth inning gave Y-D the breathing room it needed.

Red Sox catcher Ben McMahan (Florida) began the fifth inning by drawing a walk from Wood and made his way to third on an error by Kettleers shortstop Deven Marrero (Arizona State). He scored when first baseman Jordan Leyland (UC Irvine) mishandled Bobby Crocker’s (Cal Poly) bunt.

“I don’t care how we score runs,” said Pickler. “We put the ball in play and that’s what baseball is all about. They made an error and we capitalized.”

Matt Jensen (Cal Poly) scored the winning run, crossing the plate on a Tyler Hanover (LSU) double in the seventh.

“It’s baseball,” Kettleers field manager Mike Roberts said. “Errors are part of this game and as a coach you have to understand that physical errors are going to happen. I don’t want anyone thinking that an error lost this ball game, because it didn’t. We had all kinds of opportunities to score and we didn’t.”

Cotuit started a rally with one out in the eighth when James McCann (Arkansas) hit a solo home run over the left-field fence. But they fell short in the ninth as Baxendale shut down the Kettleers.

Pickler praised his three pitchers, especially Leonard.

“I think he was outstanding,” Pickler said. “He came back after four days rest and gave me what he had. He didn’t have a lot early and then he got stronger as the game went on. That’s the kind of pitcher that he is. I asked him if he could come back after four days, there’s no tomorrow, he said ‘I’ll take the ball’.”

(Cape Cod Release)

SOUTH YARMOUTH —- The Cotuit Kettleers rode the arm of Matt Andriese (Cal Riverside) to a 3-0 win over Yarmouth-Dennis on Wednesday in Game 1 of the best-of-three Cape Cod Baseball League Championship Series at Red Wilson Field.

Andriese pitched a complete-game shutout to put his team one win away from the title. The series switches to Lowell Park for Thursday’s Game 2.

“I felt really good,” he said. “My rhythm was good. I threw a lot of strikes.”

That he did. The Cotuit starter tossed 120 pitches, and 85 of them crossed the dish for strikes. He lost the no-hit bid in the fifth inning on Ben McMahan’s (Florida) two-out single. He allowed just three hits, while striking out four, walking one and hitting one.

He appeared to be tiring in the eighth when he walked one batter and hit another. He then allowed a base hit to Joe Panik (St. John’s) to start the ninth. With action in the bullpen, Andriese forced the league’s home run and RBI leader, Jordan Ribera (Fresno State) into a 1-6-3 double play.

“I just hope he enjoyed pitching today as much as his five coaches and his teammates enjoyed watching him pitch,” Cotuit field manager Mike Roberts said.

The Kettleers starter shut down a powerful Y-D offense that had inflicted a beating on its previous playoff opponents; whipping them by a combined score of 49-17.

What little offense was provided during the game was done so in the first three innings. The Kettleers played their usual game of small ball and scored early. Deven Marrero (Arizona State) picked up the first RBI when he laid a bunt down the first base line, scoring Jordan Leyland (UC Irvine), who led the game off with a single. Brooks Pinckard (Baylor) picked up another RBI on a fielder’s choice, scoring Chad Wright (Kentucky). Marrero’s RBI single in the third completed Cotuit’s scoring.

“We can not hit with Y-D,” Roberts said. “We’re a small-ball team. We have to play our style.”

After a rough start, Red Sox pitcher Randy Fontanez (South Florida) settled down and went eight innings, allowing just the three runs on eight hits.

“It was a pitcher’s day,” said Roberts, “and not a hitters day.”

“Their guy out-pitched us. They played some small ball and we didn’t handle the ball,” Y-D field manager Scott Pickler said. “We’ve got to win (Thursday). That’s all.”

Andriese’s impressive start almost did not exist. When the sun rose on game day, the Kettleers had yet to select a pitcher. Roberts had five pitchers in mind and had all of them text him last night to check on their arms.

“His text came from the heart,” Roberts said. “It was different. It wasn’t ‘I want to pitch.’ His words were ‘Coach, if you give me this opportunity, I think I’m capable of helping the team.’”

After the team arrived, Roberts had to make a decision. He made the correct choice.

Their appearance in the championship round marks the third in three years for the Kettleers, who are hoping the third time really is the charm.

“I’m trying to really not coach and just let the players play,” Roberts said.

(Cape League Release)
