Missouri head coach Tim Jamieson will head the staff. The Mizzou skipper will be joined by Dave Van Horn of Arkansas, Rob Walton of Oral Roberts and Kent State’s Scott Stricklin. All three assistants are head coaches at their respective schools.

Tim Jamieson

“We are thrilled to announce Tim Jamieson as our 2011 manager,” said Eric Campbell, USA Baseball General Manager of National Teams. “His experience from 2005 — coaching players like David Price, Matt Wieters and Matt LaPorta — will serve him well, and teaming him with Dave Van Horn, Scott Stricklin and Rob Walton will provide our athletes with a unique opportunity to learn from some of the best college coaches in the game. Once again, the college coaching community has rallied around the Collegiate National Team program.”

Jamieson and Walton were assistants on for the 2005 CNT under Baylor head coach Steve Smith. This marks Walton’s third time on the USA staff. This will be Stricklin and Van Horn’s first time coaching for Team USA.

Jamieson is in his 17th season as head coach at Missouri. He has compiled a record of 544-382-2 in his time there.

By Collegebaseball360.com Editor Sean Stires

Redemption: After being swept on it home field by Southern Mississippi in last year’s Super Regionals, Florida punched the first ticket to Omaha this year by sweeping Miami. The Gators capped the sweep with Saturday’s 4-3 win

Florida head coach Kevin O'Sullivan

Miami hasn’t won a postseason game in Gainesville since 2002.

The Big “E”s: Miami committed seven, that’s right seven errors in Saturday’s loss to Florida. Only one of the four runs scored by the Gators was earned. In fact, just two of Florida’s 11 runs in the two games was earned thanks to nine Hurricane miscues. Miami hasn’t won a postseason game in Gainesville since 2002.

Mighty Mo: It didn’t take long for Texas to take back the momentum in it’s series with TCU. After losing 3-1 in Friday’s opener the Longhorns drubbed the Horned Frogs 14-1 on Saturday to send the game to a deciding third game. The rout was due in part to the dominant pitching of Taylor Jungmann, who struck out 9 in 8 1/3 IP, but also largely to three Horned Frog errors that led to six unearned runs scored by the Longhorns. All five runs allowed in 3 2/3 IP by TCU starter Steven Maxwell (11-2) were unearned.

Crowded House: The first two games of the Texas-TCU Super Regional have drawn more than 7,300 fans each to Disch-Falk Field. That makes 21 games this season in which the Longhorns have played in front of a crowd of more than 7,000.

Livin’ On The Edge: Vanderbilt downed Florida State 6-2 Saturday to force Sunday’s winner take all game. The win makes the Commodores 4-0 in NCAA elimination games this year. Saturday’s win halted Florida State’s seven game winning streak.

Not So Super: This is Florida State’s 10th Super Regional since 1999, but the Seminoles have won just one of their last seven Super Regional series since advancing to Omaha in the first two years of the format in 1999 and 2000. Three of those Super Regional losses came on their home field. Including their 1-1 mark this year, the Seminoles are 9-14 all-time in Super Regional games.

Great Garvin: Commodore reliever Grayson Garvin tossed three shutout innings to finish Saturday’s win. Garvin has now given-up just two runs with 12 strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings in three postseason appearances this year.

Son Of A Yaz: Vanderbilt freshman Mike Yastrzemski is the grandson of Red Sox Hall of Famer Carl

Vanderbilt freshman Mike Yastrzemski

Yastrzemski, but he has a Seminole connection as well. Mike’s dad, Michael, played at Florida State from 1980-’83. Mike is 4-for-7 in the Super Regional with a double, a home run and two RBIs.

Is That A Girl, What’s She Know About College Baseball? Those were my wife’s words, not mine, when she heard Pam Ward doing the play-by-play of Virginia’s 3-2 win over Oklahoma in game one of their series. I’ll admit I was skeptical of Ward doing the game, and I’m sure I wasn’t alone. I have to say though that Ward did a solid job. She’s got a lot of experience doing softball games, and she even used that to provide some baseball insight. Ward talked about the current moratorium on composite bats in college baseball and how college softball may consider the same thing with all of the home runs hit at this year’s Women’s College World Series.

Hoos Boom: Virginia scored all three of its runs in that game on home runs. Phil Gosselin led-off the bottom of the 1st inning with his 10th HR of the year and then Dan Grovatt hit the deciding two-run blast in the 6th.

Nice Lid: Did you see the hat UCLA pitcher Trevor Bauer wore during the Fullerton game at Jackie Robinson Stadium? It’s so faded and worn looking that it looks like Jackie Robinson could have worn it during his playing days with the Bruins.

That’s A Bold Statement: “Of all the guys I’ve seen hit Harold Martinez is my favorite hitter. Manny Ramirez is my guy in Major League baseball. When I walk into a room and a Manny Ramirez at-bat is on I’m not walking out. That’s how I felt about Harold Martinez.” That’s what Eric Byrnes said about injured Miami third baseman Harold Martinez, who was hospitalized in Gainesville with an infected shin. Byrnes got to see first hand last week just how explosive Martinez’s bat is when the sophomore had 9 RBIs and two HR in the Coral Cables Regional.

Jake Smith hit a home run and earned a save in Alabama's win.

Tide Rolling: Alabama beat Clemson 5-4 in Saturday’s series opener. The Crimson Tide, which barely made the SEC Tournament field, has won 13 of its last 15 games to move to within one win from Omaha. One more win would make Mitch Gaspard just the second rookie coach in the last 30 years to take a team to the College World Series. Dan McDonnell did it at Louisville in 2007.

The Two Jakes: How about Alabama’s Jake Smith? The senior started at third base and hit his 14th home run of the season to help the Tide win Saturday’s game. He then gave-up just a hit over the final two scoreless innings of the game to earn his sixth save.

It’s On Where? With all eight Super Regionals in action on Saturday it was a little hard to actually find where some of them were (or weren’t) being televised. I was never actually able to watch the Alabama-Clemson game on TV. I did watch parts of it on ESPN3.com. That’s where I found most of the UCLA-Fullerton game, and then the video froze. Turned out they moved it to ESPN2 after the Florida-Miami game was over. It’s just a shame that unless you were on the west coast most of the UCLA-Fullerton series was either on TV after 11pm ET Friday night (it ended after 2am) or was not on TV at all.

Bopping Bruins: UCLA hit four home runs in Saturday’s 11-7 10-inning win over the Titans. Tyler Rahmatulla had the biggest of the blasts. With UCLA down to its last two strikes of the season the sophomore’s 2-run shot gave the Bruins a 7-6 lead in the top of the 9th. Fullerton tied the score 7-7 in the bottom of the inning, and then UCLA plated four in the 10th for the win.

Golden Gallego: Bruin shortstop Niko Gallego made two great plays in the bottom of the 10th to help force Sunday’s deciding game. Niko is the son of 13-year MLB vetern Mike Gallego.

White Between The Eyes: When Arizona State reliever Mitchell Lambson went to the mound in the top of the 8th inning umpires apparently told him he had too much rosin on his hat. The reasoning would be that the white from the rosin could be deceptive to Arkansas batters. Sounds fairly reasonable, and the rationale would be in line with the fact that pitchers cannot have white on their gloves. What I’ve never understood is how a few white stitches on a pitcher’s glove (or in this case rosin on a hat that’s also covered in white salt stains) aids in hiding the ball than a full home white uniform (like ASU was wearing Saturday night)…or even white lettering on a dark uniform (like Arkansas had).

Lights Out Lambson: Rosin or no rosin, Lambson had 2 Ks in a 1-2-3 inning, and he wasn’t done there. In a game ASU eventually won 7-6 in 12 innings, Lambson (8-2) fired five shutout innings of relief with six strikeouts to earn the win.

Uggghh: I really want to watch the Arkansas-Arizona State series, just not with Justin “I continually second guess head coaches who have been to the College World Series four times” Kutcher calling the action. Ok, so Dave Van Horn didn’t bring in Brett Eibner to pitch leading 6-5 in the 9th inning…we get it. Now go back to criticizing umpires.

Tough Night: Eibner was called out not once, but twice for batter’s interference. The second one ended the top of the 12th inning. The two-way star (21 HR, 69 RBIs) then gave-up the game-winning hit to Deven Marrero in the bottom of the 12th.

* ASU wins series (2-0)

The Skinny

This Super Regional pits two teams that both advanced to last year’s College World Series. They also played against each other in Fayetteville during the 2009 regular season with Arkansas ranked #1 in one national poll and Arizona State ranked #1 in another poll.

Arizona State: (#1 National Seed) The Sun Devils are the overall #1 national seed in this year’s tournament. Tim Esmay is in his first year as the Sun Devil’s head coach, but he is no stranger to Omaha. He played in the CWS twice at ASU and he was an assistant coach on four of Pat Murphy’s Omaha teams.

Esmay is 50-8 in his first season at the helm, and what’s probably the most impressive is the fact that he’s done it without two pitchers who led last year’s Pac 10 champs to Omaha. Josh Spence (10-1, 2.37 ERA last yr.) returned to ASU after being drafted, but he’s missed the entire season due to injury, while Mike Leake (16-1, 1.71 ERA in ’09) is 5-0 with a 2.22 ERA in 11 starts this year for the Cincinnati Reds. Starters Merrill Kelly, Jake Borup and Seth Blair have combined to go 33-3 this season, while Jordan Swaggerty (2.05 ERA, 14 SVs) slams the door at the end. The 3.10 team ERA ranks third nationally.

Arizona State’s line-up is filled with tough outs. Seven different players who have started at least 33 games are batting .325 or better this year, and three different players lead the team in the triple crown categories. Riccio Torrez is batting .404, Zack McPhee leads the team with 63 RBIs and Kole Calhoun has a team best 16 HR. McPhee also leads the nation with 14 triples. The athletic Sun Devils have also stolen 130 bases this season and the team’s .975 fielding % is 11th.

Arkansas: Dave Van Horn’s Razorbacks limped toward this year’s NCAA Tournament by winning just two of its last five SEC series and then going 0-2 at the conference tournament. The late season slump cost the Hogs any shot they had at being a national seed. However, like last year, Arkansas was 3-0 in Regional play. Only this year they got to host rather than go on the road.

Third baseman Zack Cox (.427, 9 HR, 48 RBIs) is considered one of the best pure hitters in the nation. Brett Eibner (.337, 21 HR, 69 RBIs) is the team’s top run producers. He made 11 starts on the mound this season, but his only outing at last week’s Regional was one inning in relief.

Sophomore Drew Smyly (9-1, 2.56) has both of the pitching staff’s complete games this season. T.J. Forrest (8-0, 3.10 ERA) started two Regional games, and picked-up his 8th win in the title game vs. Washington State.

The Sun Devils Win If?

The Sun Devils will need to ignore their past transgressions as this is the best program in the country (kind of like Vanderbilt in the SEC) that has not won a national title recently.

If the Devils continue to play as they have all season, under the calm collective influence of Esmay and staff, they have more than a snowballs chance.

Lurking in the shadows of the Sun Devil mindset, however, is the fact that Washington State gave the Sun Devils their only series loss of the season, and Arkansas just defeated the Cougars last weekend from the field of 64.

Other common opponents between the two include California, which the Devils swept, while the Hogs took two-of-three in Berkeley in the early spring.

Arizona State is loaded with talent and depth, and I would really be surprised if they botch this series, but it has happened to the Sun Devils before, losing to Oregon State in Omaha in both 2006 & 2007, and losing in a home super-regional match-up with the Wonderdogs of Fresno State in 2008.

Like Casey said, “the best teams don’t always win the title.”

Should be an entertaining series with both teams having a host of players drafted in the 2010 MLB Draft.

The Razorbacks Win If?

Zach Cox will play a pivotal role in this series, but he limped off the field on the final day of the Fayetteville Regional and his health is in doubt for the game on Saturday.

Drew Smyly will have to perform his magic in Game #1, as this is a must win for the Hogs, and they must get into the bullpen and the psyche of the Sun Devils.

This has been a hard thing to do as the Sun Devil Regional was the 10th weekend sweep for the Sun Devils this year, 11 if you count the Coca-Cola Classic.

ASU is number one for a reason.

Arkansas will need to score runs in bunches to win this series as they don’t have the pitching to match up with one of the deepest bullpens in the country.

Smyly, however, does have the stuff needed to get the Hogs off to a fast start.

The question becomes, should the Hogs hold Smyly back from Game #1 and try to work backwards in their pitching match-ups, or should they come right out and attack ASU head-to-head?

This would be a gutsy move by Arkansas skipper Dave Van Horn, who is no stranger to the College World Series, being one of a small number of coaches that have taken two schools (Nebraska & Arkansas) to the greatest show on dirt.

2009 Western Division Champion: LSU & Ole Miss Tied with 20-10 records

2009 SEC Tournament Champion: LSU

Banner Year: Teams outside the SEC often complain the conference gets too much respect when it comes to NCAA Tournament bids, but the SEC lived-up to its lofty status last year. Eight SEC teams received NCAA bids in 2009, with half of them, LSU, Ole Miss, Florida, and Arkansas, advancing to at least a Super Regional. Arkansas and LSU both made it to Omaha, while the Tigers winning the 2009 National Championship.

Big Crowds: The SEC drew a record of nearly 1.9 million fans to its on-campus ballparks in 2009, the fourth year in a row to draw over 1.6 million. Seven SEC teams drew in excess of 100,000 fans to their parks in 2009. The SEC averaged a record 4,689 fans per game in 2009, the third straight year to exceed the 4,000 mark.

Alabama

2009 Record: (37-21, 18-11)

Mascot: Crimson Tide

Head Coach: Mitch Gaspard

Location: Tuscaloosa, AL

Vitals: .330 BA, 107 HR, 60 SB, .415 OBP, .971 Fld%…5.13 ERA, 4 CG, 11 SV, 487 K, 182 BB, .277 opp. BA

New Head Coach: Mitch Gaspard took the reigns of the Alabama program after long time skipper Jim Wells

Ross Wilson (ESPN.com)

retired last summer. Gaspard served two stints as an assistant to Wells, including the last two seasons as Alabama’s recruiting coordinator. He was the head coach at Northwestern State from 2002-2007. Prior to that he helped Wells take Alabama to the College World Series three times as a Crimson Tide assistant.

Solid Returns: Preseason All-American 2B Ross Wilson (.353, 9 HR, 57 RBIs) is one of four returning players who started at least 49 games last year. Senior Jake Smith (.359, 18 HR, 54 RBIs), Freshman All-American Taylor Dugas (.352, 13 SB) and Josh Rutledge (.305) are back as well, as is Clay Jones (.331, 7 HR, 39 RBIs), who started just 35 games last year. The biggest loss to the line-up is OF Kent Matthes (.358, 28 HR, 81 RBIs), who tied for the NCAA home run lead.

Pitching Questions: Alabama loses starters Austin Hyatt (8-3, 3.76 ERA) and Del Howell (5-3, 6.33 ERA). Those two combined to make 26 starts & tossed three of the staff’s four complete games. With nine starts last year soph. LHP Adam Morgan (4-2, 4.17 ERA) is the team’s most experience returning starter. Redshirt soph. reliever Tyler White (1-0, 2.28 ERA, 2 SV) and Jr. Nathan Kilcrease (4-4, 4.11 ERA, 2 SV) are among the top returning relievers.

Arkansas

2009 Record: (41-24, 14-15)

Mascot: Razorbacks

All-American Trio: Juniors Brett Eibner (.231, 12 HR, 54 RBIs) & Andy Wilkins (.319, 19 HR, 58 RBIs) and sophomore Zach Cox (.266, 13 HR, 39 RBIs) have all received preseason All-American recognition. Arkansas, LSU and Texas are the only three schools in the country to have three players receive All-American recognition. Cox was a Freshman All-American last year as well.

Two-Way Duo: Eibner and Cox are pitchers as well. Eibner (5-5, 5.00 ERA) tied a team-high with 17 starts last year with the staff’s only complete game. Cox (5-1, 4.82 ERA, SV) mad all 14 of his appearances out of the bullpen.

Plenty More Pitching: Senior Mike Bolsinger (6-4, 2.99 ERA, 2SV) is among the top returning pitchers to the Razorback staff. He picked-up the only save at last year’s College World Series. Drew Smyly (3-1, 4.66 ERA, 14 starts). Dallas Keuchel (9-3, 3.92 ERA) and Stephen Richards (6-2, 2.19 ERA, 9 SV) are the biggest staff losses

Auburn

2009 Record: (31-25, 11-19)

Mascot: Tigers

Head Coach: John Pawlowski

Location: Auburn, AL

Vitals: .286 BA, 103 HR, 40 SB, .381 OBP, .969 Fld%…6.12 ERA, 0 CG, 12 SV, 411 K, 228 BB, .321 opp. BA

Notable Drought: Since going to the NCAA Tournament five times from 2000-2005 Auburn has missed the tourney the last four years.

Mound Presence: Junior LHP Grant Dayton (2-6, 5.92 ERA) and soph. Jon Luke Jacobs (3-4, 5.74 ERA) are back to lead the weekend rotation. They are expected to be joined by 6’7 lefty Cole Nelson, a junior college transfer who was drafted in the 48th round by Tampa Bay last year. Austin Hubbard (3-3, 4.20 ERA, 12 SV) and Bradley Hendrix (7-3, 5.09 ERA) are back to lead the bullpen. Hendrix’s 7 wins led the staff as did his 24 relief appearances. Another juco transfer, Stephen Kohlscheen, helped lead Cowley College to last year’s Junior College World Series.

A Lot In The Line-Up: Auburn returns seven of its top nine hitters from 2009. Justin Hargett led the Tigers in average (.330) and on-base percentage (.426). He’s joined by Brian Fletcher (.301, 17 HR, 54 RBIs), Casey McElroy (.286, 7 HR), Hunter Morris (.282, 12 HR), and Tony Caldwell (.281, 9 HR).

No Mummey…For Now: Auburn recently announced that centerfielder Trent Mummey (.289, 15 HR) will miss at least a month with a severely sprained right ankle. Mummey had 17 of Auburn’s 40 stolen bases last year. He was also named to the SEC All-Defensive Team. Junior college transfer Justin Fradejas will fill-in until he returns.

Desert Challenge: The Tigers go to Tempe, AZ for a 3-game series with Arizona State March 12-14.

LSU

2009 Record: (56-17, 20-10)

Mascot: Tigers

Head Coach: Paul Mainieri

Location: Baton Rouge, LA

Vitals: .315 BA, 107 HR, 114 SB, .405 OBP, .974 Fld%…4.02 ERA, 679 K, 186 BB, .257 opp. BA

Anthony Ranaudo (ESPN.com photo)

LSU Line-Up Losses: The Tigers lose four of their top five batters from last year’s National Championship team. D.J. LeMahieu (.350, 12 SB), Ryan Schimpf (.336, 22 HR, 70 RBIs, 18 SB), Sean Ochinko (.333, 9 HR), and Jared Mitchell (.327, 11 HR, 36 SB) are all gone.

Top Bats Back: LSU still returns the like of Sr. Blake Dean (.328, 17 HR, 71 RBIs), Tyler Hanover (.321), SEC Tournament MVP Mikie Mahtook (.316, 7 HR), Leon Landry (.300, 12 HR), and slick fielding Austin Nola, who didn’t join the starting line-up until LSU’s 40th game of the season last year. He did not commit an error at shortstop in 24 chances at the College World Series.

On The Hill: While they lose top overall pitcher Louis Coleman (14-2, 2.93 ERA, 142 K), the Tigers return several top notch pitchers to carry the load. The group is led by junior Anthony Ranaudo (12-3, 3.04, 159 K). He’s joined by Austin Ross (6-8, 5.18 ERA), soph.closer Matty Ott (4-2, 2.68 ERA, 16 SV), Daniel Bradshaw (4-0, 3.04 ERA), Paul Bertuccini (2-0, 3.86 ERA, 3 SV), and Chris Matulis (6-2, 4.82 ERA).

On The Bayou: LSU plays its first 21 games of the season in Louisiana. The only road game is at Northwestern State in Natchitoches.

Mississippi

2009 Record: (44-20-, 20-10)

Mascot: Rebels

Head Coach: Mike Bianco

Location: Oxford, MS

Vitals: .310 BA, 56 HR, 92 SB, .398 OBP, .970 Fld%…4.06 ERA, 4 CG, 17 SV, 623 K, 189 BB, .271 opp. BA

Dealing With Draft Losses: After setting a school record with 20 wins in SEC play Ole Miss had 11 players drafted last year, including five underclassmen who signed pro contracts. Jordan Henry (.343, 38 SB), Logan Power (.311, 7 HR, 20 doubles) and Kyle Henson (.338, 8 HR) are the top losses in the line-up. Scott Bittle (5-2, 2.17 ERA), Phillip Irwin (8-3, 3.84 ERA), Brett Bukvich (9-3, 4.42 ERA), and Nathan Baker (4-3, 3.63 ERA) are all gone from the pitching staff.

Matt Smith (secsports.com)

Bats That Are Back: The good news for the Rebles is three players shared the team lead with 8 home runs, and two of those players, Matt Smith (.336, 8 HR, 59 RBIs) and Matt Snyder (.298, 8 HR, 31 RBIs) are back this year. Smith was the team RBI leader. Snyder and his twin brother, Mike, are expected to share the corner infield spots. Tim Ferguson (.358, 18 SB) and Zac Miller (.341) are among other top returnees to the line-up.

Mound Returnees: Junior LHP Drew Pomeranz (8-4, 3.40 ERA) will lead the weekend rotation. Closer Jake Morgan (4-1, 3.46 ERA, 9 saves) suffered an injury in the off-season, so David Goforth (1-1, 2.80 ERA, 3 SV) is expected to move into that role. Senior Rory McKean (5-1, 4.53 ERA) is among a handful of other experience relievers who return.

Welcome Back?: The Rebels will host a 3-game series with reigning Big East Champion Louisville March 12-14. The Cardinals are coached by former Ole Miss assistant Dan McDonnell and have been to Super Regionals in two of the last three seasons.

Mississippi State

2009 Record: (25-29, 9-20)

Mascot: Bulldogs

Head Coach: John Cohen

Location: Starkville, MS

Vitals: .298 BA, 61 HR, 72 SB, .398 OBP, .968 Fld%…6.57 ERA, 5 CG, 12 SV, 365 K, 246 BB, .304 opp. BA

Dogs Absent: Since making NCAA Tournament appearances from 2003-2007, including the ’07 CWS, Mississippi State has missed the last two NCAA Tourneys. In fact, the Bulldogs have not been to the SEC tournament for the last two years either.

Big Dogs Back: 1B Connor Powers (.301, 19 HR, 63 RBIs) and DH Ryan Duffy (.339, 10 HR, 33 RBIs) were MSU’s top home runs hitters last year, and they’re both back to lead the offense. Jet Butler (.335) and Russ Sneed (.333, 9 HR, 43 RBIs) return as well. Leading hitter Scott DeLoach (.353) and Grant Hogue (.315, 29 SB) are the biggest offensive losses.

Hard Working Dogs: Nick Routt (5-3, 4.15 ERA, 4 CG) and Tyler Whitney (3-4, 5.18 ERA, CG), who accounted for 24 of the staff’s 54 starts and all five complete games last year, are both back. The Bulldogs lose saves leader Chad Crosswhite (6 SV, 7.38 ERA). Routt is expected to lead the rotation, while Whitney could move to the closer role. Lefty junior college transfer Trey Johnson and freshman Chris Stratton could factor in the weekend rotation. Johnson hit 19 HR as a two-way player last year at Blinn (TX) CC.

Special Delivery: For the second straight year Mississippi State players hand delivered tickets in neighborhoods throughout Starkville to local fans who ordered 2010 season tickets. Head coach John Cohen started the program when he was the head coach at Kentucky.

(With the end of the year fast approaching, we’re counting down some of the top moments from the 2009 college baseball season. We’ll have one a day through New Year’s Eve.)

Andrew Darr started 29 games in 2009 for the Arkansas baseball team. Most of those starts for the senior outfielder came before the month of April, but the most important start of Darr’s career came on June 6, 2009-the day the

Andrew Darr

Razorbacks beat Florida State to go to the College World Series.

Darr had just one at-bat in the Razorback’s three NCAA Regional wins a week earlier in Norman, OK, and he didn’t see the field in his team’s 7-2 win over FSU to start Super Regional play a day earlier in Tallahassee. In fact, the senior from Gilbert, Az hadn’t started a game in almost a month prior to the deciding Super Regional game.

Darr had caught Arkansas head coach Dave Van Horn’s eye in batting practice though over the last week. So with his team needing just a win to get to the College World Series for the first time in five years, Van Horn played a hunch and started Darr in left field against the host Seminoles. To say the hunch paid off would be an insult to the word hunch.

Darr went 4-for-5 with a home runs two doubles and 3 RBIs, including a walk-off 2-run double to send the Razorbacks to Omaha. His solo home run in the 7th inning started a five-run frame to give the Razorbacks a 6-5 lead. The game seesawed in the late innings, and FSU took an 8-7 lead in the top of the 9th (Arkansas was the designated home team for game two, even though the game was at FSU.)

Darr came to the plate with runners at first and second and one out in the 9th and stroked the first pitch he saw to the gap in left-centerfield to bring Bo Bigham and Zack Cox home to end the game and send the Hogs to Omaha. The Razorbacks became just the ninth team in NCAA history to advance to the College World Series without playing either the Regional or Super Regional round in their home ballpark.

Darr started three of his team’s four games at the College World Series. The only game he didn’t start in Omaha was an elimination game against Virginia, but he made the most of his time on the field in that game as well. He entered that game as a defensive replacement in the 9th inning of that game and ended-up with an RBI double in the 12th inning to give Arkansas a 4-3 extra inning win.

While Darr’s final stats of his final college season, .252 avg., 4 HR and 18 RBIs, are far from eye-popping it would be hard to argue that there was a more important .252 batter in the country in 2009.

Darr

Collegebaseball360.com Editor Sean Stires talked to Darr right after he and the Razorbacks returned to Fayetteville from Super Regional win. Click the “play” button above to listen to that podcast interview.

(With the end of the year fast approaching, we’re counting down some of the top moments from the 2009 college baseball season. We’ll have one a day through New Year’s Eve.)

It was unique enough just to have Arizona State (22-5) playing at Arkansas (22-6) in a pair of mid-week games, but the two teams’ rankings made the match-up even more special. Arizona State was ranked #1 in the nation in three polls: Baseball America, NCBWA and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll. Arkansas was number one in the Collegiate Baseball Poll.

The games were just the second regular season meetings between the two teams after ASU had swept two games in Tempe in 2008. The Tuesday/Wednesday April 7 & 8 games also represented the first ever #1 vs. #1 match-up in the history of Arkansas’ Baum Stadium.

Arizona State scored first in game one when Zack MacPhee stole home in the 3rd inning and then Kole Calhoun singled-in Carlos Ramirez an inning later to make it 2-0 ASU. Arkansas got on the board with a run in the 4th inning, but Ramirez blasted his 11th home run of the year in the top of the 6th to put the Sun Devils up 3-1.

The Razorbacks would erupt for five runs in the 7th inning, capped by a pinch-hit Scott Lyons 2-run single to right-centerfield to put Arkansas up 6-3. The Hogs added a run in the 8th inning for a 7-3 win in front of a crowd of 8,342.

A record crowd of 11,434 packed Baum Stadium the next night only to see the Sun Devils jump out to a 6-1 lead through three innings. Jason Kipnis’ 10th home run of the year was among the early damage inflicted by ASU, but for a second straight night the early lead would not hold.

Arkansas capitalized on an Abe Ruiz error at first base to plate a total four runs in the 4th inning to its deficit to 6-5. Three of the runs were unearned.

ASU added a run in the top of the 5th to make it 7-6, but the Razorbacks scored three more runs, all with two outs, in the bottom of the frame. Andrew Darr’s single plated the first run, and then Tim Carver drove-in Darr and Brett Eibner with another single to give Arkansas an 8-7 win and the two-game series sweep.

Zack Cox was one of six pitchers sent to the mound by Arkansas head coach Dave Van Horn. He gave-up just two hits in three shutout innings to earn the win. Stephen Richards tossed a perfect 9th inning for his 6th save of 2009.

17,300 fans came through the turnstiles for the historic two-game series at Baum Stadium. It broke the record of 15,919 set earlier in the season vs. Nebraska.

Both teams would make it to the College World Series in 2009, but they took distinctly different roads to Omaha.

Pat Murphy’s Sun Devils won 22 of their last 26 games to close the regular season. They were a combined 5-0 in the Regional and Super Regional games they hosted vs. Kent State, Oral Roberts and Clemson.

Arkansas was just 10-16 (including 2-2 at the SEC Tournament) down the stretch, but they caught fire after getting into the NCAA Tournament. The Razorbacks were 3-0 at the Norman, OK Regional with a win over Washington State and two victories over the host Sooners. They won both of their Super Regional games vs. Florida State in Tallahassee, FL to advance to Omaha.

<a href="http://www.simplesharebuttons.com" target="_blank" class="ssba_tooptip" id="ssba_tooptip"">www.simplesharebuttons.com

Two well played games on day one of the 2009 College World Series. Arkansas downed Cal State Fullerton 10-6 in the opener, while LSU downed Virginia 9-5. A few thoughts/facts on the action from Rosenblatt Stadium.

The four teams that were playing today’s games (Arkansas, Fullerton, LSU, & Virginia) had a combined 20-1 record in the NCAA Tournament coming into today’s action. Virginia’s game one Super Regional loss to Ole Miss was the lone blemish.

As I speak, LSU head coach Paul Mainieri is getting post-game hugs on the field from his daughters Sam and Alex.

The result of Arkansas’ win over Fullerton isn’t necessarily shocking, but the way they did it is. The Razorbacks put ten runs on the board against a Titans team that had given-up a total of just 11 runs in their five previous NCAA Tourney games this year.

Arkansas head coach Dave Van Horn finally has his first CWS win. He was 0-4 in 2001-02 trips with Nebraska, and 0-2 in 2004 with the Razorbacks.

LSU’s win gives the Tigers their first victory in a CWS opener since 2000.

LSU used all three weekend starters in tonight’s game. Anthony Ranaudo pitched just 3.1 innings in his 17th start of the year, Austin Ross had 2 IP in relief, and SEC pitcher of the Year Louis Coleman pitched the 8th inning.

Coleman pitched in relief on Friday in SEC play vs. Georgia and Kentucky during the regular season and then made Sunday starts to end those series.

Virginia plays Cal State Fullerton Monday at 1pm Central. The Cavs are the home team.

LSU plays Arkansas Monday at 6pm Central. The Razorbacks will be the home team.

Virginia freshman Steven Proscia hit his 10th HR of the year. It’s the most for a Cavs freshman since 2005 when Sean Doolittle hit 15.

Chicago Cubs GM Jim Hendry was in the press box and in the stands for a while tonight. Hendry was head coach of the 1991 Creighton CWS team. He also gave Paul Mainieri his first coaching job at Miami’s Christopher Columbus High School.

I sat in the press box between two really nice guys tonight. Marc Davis, the Sports Director at WCDV Channel 19 from Charlottesville, VA and Jason Cole from Burntorangebeat.com. Had a lot of good baseball conversation.

I know it’s been overstated all week, but Mainieri and O’Connor are two of the best class acts in the game. They are both great guys, and their staffs and teams embody how the game should be: play hard with no excuses.

My dad, son, daughter, and wife were all in the stands tonight. My son was with a few of his Scrappers baseball teammates. It was their first CWS experience. I hope they had a good time.

Sat for part of the game with my great friend, Randy Rosetta, from the Baton Rouge Advocate….he’s still Randy.

We’ll have more tomorrow.

<a href="http://www.simplesharebuttons.com" target="_blank" class="ssba_tooptip" id="ssba_tooptip"">www.simplesharebuttons.com

With its Super Regional win over TCU, #1 national seed Texas is the final team to qualify for the 2009 College World Series. It’s not like Augie Garrido and the Longhorns haven’t been to Omaha before. Here are some Texas CWS facts:

Texas is making its 33rd overall College World Series appearance.

The Longhorns haven’t been to Omaha since 2005, but it’s still their sixth trip to college baseball promised land in the last ten years.

Texas has won six national championships. Augie Garrido was the head coach for the 2002 and 2005 title teams.

Garrido also won national championships at Cal State Fullerton in 1979, 1984 and 1995, giving him five titles overall.

His five championships are second only to former USC head coach Rod Dedeaux’s 10.

Garrido is the first coach to win national championships at two different schools.

2009 marks Garrido’s 13th CWS berth.

Garrido played collegiately at Fresno State (winner of last year’s championship) and started his coaching career at Cal Poly (which made the tourney for the first time ever this season).

Garrido, LSU’s Paul Mainieri (then at Notre Dame) and Arkansas’ Dave Van Horn (then with Nebraska) all coached teams at the 2002 CWS.

Texas was one of three Big 12 teams (along with Baylor and Nebraska) to go to the 2005 CWS, but this year’s Longhorn squad is the first Big 12 team to make it to Omaha since then.

<a href="http://www.simplesharebuttons.com" target="_blank" class="ssba_tooptip" id="ssba_tooptip"">www.simplesharebuttons.com

The TCU-Texas game is just starting. It’s the only Super Regional game remaining. Who would have thought that just two of the eight series would go the distance? Here are a few random thoughts on some of what we saw this weekend…

Maybe Southern Mississippi’s Corky Palmer has the key to career success figured out: Announce your retirement. Palmer made the announcement in April that his 12th season as head coach would be his last. Instead of a gift certificate for an early bird special, Palmer’s team’s retirement present is a trip to Omaha.

I’ve always said that in sports (and really life in general) you always get a chance, and then it’s up to you to make the most of it.

Exhibit A-Palmer’s clean-up batter, Corey Stevens (.329, 8 HR, 58 RBIs) was tossed from Sunday’s decisive Super Regional game vs. Florida with his team trailing 6-4. Stevens’ replacement in the clean-up spot, Adam Doleac (.286, 0HR, 7 RBIs), lined a ball through the right side to load the bases. It set-up Joey Archer’s 2-run, 2-out hit to tie the score 6-6.

Exhibit B-Arkansas’ Adrew Darr hadn’t started a game for the Razorbacks since March, but head coach Dave Van Horn had him in the line-up Saturday in the Hogs’ Super Regional clincher vs. Florida State. Darr responded by going 4-for-5 with a home run, two doubles and 3 RBIs, including a walk-off 2-run double to send the Razorbacks to Omaha for the first time since 2004.

Not So Super…After losing that game to Arkansas, Florida State is now just 3-3 in Super Regional Series played in Tallahassee. The Seminoles are now just 3-6 all-time in Super Regionals.

The Real Rudy…You’re going to hear more about Arizona State freshman Johnny Ruettiger during the College World Series. He’s the nephew of Dan “Rudy” Ruettiger, the former Notre Dame football walk-on that prompts every opposing fan of any ND athletic team (from football to fencing) to derisively chant Rudy at every Irish player. Like “Rudy”, Johnny is from Joliet, and his intensity reminds me more of another former Irish football player, linebacker Mike Goolsby, who also hailed from Jake and Elwood’s home town. Johnny is faster than either his uncle or Goolsby, and he’s hitting .356 in 87 at-bats with 12 stolen bases.

Speaking of Arizona State, do you think head coach Pat Murphy has ever actually called his Australian pitcher, Josh Spence, a “beautiful kid” to his face the way he did multiple times during his mid-game dugout interview during Sunday night’s telecast?

Speaking of the mid-game dugout interview with a team’s head coach/manager (depending on whether it’s a college or pro game), hasn’t it jumped the shark? I like the one during the WCWS when the Washington softball coach responded “Score runs, win the game”, when asked what her team needed to do to win.

Speaking of broadcasts, this gem by Keith Moreland at the end of a North Carolina-East Carolina game on the ESPN family might be my all-time favorite bit of wisdom from a color analyst: “Good pitching always beats good hitting…most of the time.” That’s rates right up there with “Sixty percent of the time it works every time.”-Paul Rudd as Brian Fantana in Anchorman-The Legend of Ron Burgandy.

Speaking of broadcasts pt. 2…I think Dave Ryan, who’s doing the Texas-TCU game tonight is becoming my favorite college baseball TV play-by-play guy. Good blend of enthusiasm & facts. He used to do too much reciting of the media guide & random “nuggets” early on. However, his partner tonight, Eric Young, is not on my short list of favorite analysts. He has good information, but he’s tough to listen to. Young is far from dulcet, the Rutgers alum and former major leaguer is somewhere closer to Stephen A. Smith (in tone, not content).

Visigoths…really? Is that the best campaign Capital One can come-up with? Go Jaguars!

That’s it for now. I’ll have more later in the week when I’m in Omaha. My daughter’s been trying to fall asleep next to me for the last 45 minutes, and her elbow keeps jerking and hitting me in the arm while I’m trying to type.

<a href="http://www.simplesharebuttons.com" target="_blank" class="ssba_tooptip" id="ssba_tooptip"">www.simplesharebuttons.com

Arkansas, LSU and then Cal State Fullerton all locked-up spots in the 2009 College World Series by sweeping Florida State, Rice and Louisville, respectively, Saturday. Here are a few CWS facts about those three teams and their head coaches:

Arkansas

The Razorbacks are Omaha bound for the first time since 2004.

This is their 6th CWS overall.

Head coach Dave Van Horn will coach at the CWS for the fourth time. He took his alma mater in 2004, and he guided Nebraska to the program’s first Omaha berths in 2001 & 2002.

LSU

The Tigers are in their second straight College World Series.

This is the 6th time overall and the first time since 2003-’04 that the Tigers have gone to the CWS in back-to-back seasons.

It’s LSU’s 15th overall CWS.

Paul Mainieri is coaching at the CWS for the third time. Prior to leading LSU to Omaha last year, he coached Notre Dame to its first CWS since 1957 when the Irish qualified in 2002.

Cal State Fullerton

The Titans are in the College World Series for the 16th time overall.

Fullerton has qualified for Omaha in 3 of the last 4 and 5 of the last 8 seasons.

Fullerton head coach Dave Serrano will coach in his 2nd CWS in the last 3 years. He took UC Irvine to Omaha in 2007 (the Anteaters beat the Titans in an elimination game that year.)

As noted in the bullet points above, Dave Van Horn, Paul Mainieri and Dave Serrano have now all coached two different schools to the College World Series in this decade.
