STANFORD, Calif. – Toby Gerhart has been named one of 10 semifinalists for the 2009 Doak Walker Award, which honors the nation’s top collegiate running back.

Gerhart currently leads the Pac-10 Conference and ranks second nationally in rushing average at 135.2 yards per game. He has rushed for 1,217 yards this season, breaking his own school single-season rushing record of 1,136 yards set last season.

He has gone over the 100-yard mark in seven of nine games this season, including a pair of 200-yard games. Last Saturday, the senior from Norco, Calif. rushed for 223 yards in Stanford’s 52-41 win over previously seventh-ranked Oregon, breaking the school’s single game rushing record.

Gerhart joins (in alphabetical order) Donald Buckram of UTEP, Jonathan Dwyer of Georgia Tech, Mark Ingram of Alabama, Dion Lewis of Pitt, Ryan Mathews of Fresno State, Jacquizz Rodgers of Oregon State, C.J. Spiller of Clemson, Ben Tate of Auburn and Ryan Williams of Virginia Tech among the semifinalists for this prestigious award.

The three finalists for the award will be named on Nov. 23 and a second vote by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will determine the recipient. The 2009 Doak Walker Award recipient will be announced live on The Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards on Thursday, December 10.

The Award is named after three-time SMU All-American running back and 1948 Heisman Trophy winner Doak Walker.

Gerhart has also started 105 games in his first three seasons for the Cardinal baseball team.  His efforts during the 2009 football season have been chronicaled in the Collegebaseball360.com “Two Sport Reports“.  We will have a new Report with updated stats for Gerhart and other two sport athletes this week.

Junior wide receiver obtained more than 50 percent of votes

ATLANTA – Notre Dame junior wide receiver Golden Tate has been named the
AT&T All-America Player of the Week award following the fifth week of
college football action, AT&T announced today.

In the only major college football award chosen exclusively by fans, more
than 50 percent of ballots cast went to Tate. He is the second Notre Dame
player to be honored this season, joining junior quarterback Jimmy Clausen
who was selected following the first week of the season.

Tate (Hendersonville, Tenn.) helped the Irish rally past Washington, 37-30,
in overtime last week. He hauled in nine receptions for 244 yards and one
touchdown. The 244 yards receiving were the most by a Notre Dame player
since Jim Seymour set the school record with 276 against Purdue on Sept. 24,
1966 and second-most in school history. Tate also set the highest
single-game receiving total this season in the NCAA FBS. Tate added a
31-yard carry to finish with 275 all-purpose yards, the sixth-most
all-purpose yards in Notre Dame history.

University of Texas at El Paso running back Donald Buckram placed second,
with University of Maryland linebacker Demetrius Hartsfield and University
of Toledo quarterback Aaron Opelt placing third and fourth, respectively.
Each of the players was nominated by ESPN based on their outstanding
performances last week.

“AT&T congratulates Golden for his tremendous performance for Notre Dame
last week, and we wish him the best of luck throughout the season,” said Tim
McGhee, executive director, AT&T corporate sponsorships. “College football
draws the most passionate fans, and this award gives them the chance to
select the AT&T All-America Player of the Week all season long.”
