21 2/3…Innings pitched by Texas hurlers prior to surrendering a run to Oklahoma en-route to a 3-game weekend sweep. The Longhorns won by finals of 5-0, 2-0 and 9-3 in Norman.

26…Runs scored by IU in Sunday’s 26-6 win over Michigan-the most runs ever scored by a Hoosier team in Big Ten play. The final scored was also the most lopsided win for IU in the 186 game series vs. the Wolverines, who still won the series 2-1.

1…Hit allowed by Rice’s Taylor Wall in Thursday’s 6-0 win over cross-town rival Houston. Wall struck out seven with one BB to earn the Rice pitching staff’s first complete game of the season.

6…Sacrifice bunts by TCU-a school record-in Thursday’s 4-1 win over visiting San Diego State.

14…Straight batters retired by Horned Frog freshman pitcher Matt Purke from the 3rd through the 7th inning of that game. Purke struck out 10, but settled for a no-decision in the win. (TCU won the series 2-1.)

2-1…Score of Pacific’s Big West series-opening win at Long Beach State.

4…Of those doubles that were hit by UNF catcher David Eldredge.

20…Game hitting streak by Central Florida’s Chris Duffy after recording at least one hit in all five UCF games last week. Duffy is among the nation’s leaders with a .478 average, 13 HR and 48 RBIs.

12…Strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings in two appearances by Wichita State reliever Cobey Guy. The senior logged a career-high 3 1/3 innings with 6 Ks after entering the game in the first inning of Sunday’s 17-2 win over Evansville.

1,700…Career wins by Wichita State head coach Gene Stephenson after Sunday’s victory over the Purple Aces, making him just the second coach in Division 1 baseball history to reach that milestone.

By Collegebaseball360.com Editor Sean Stires

April is here, and my Passion Bucket is overflowing. For those who’ve never heard of a Passion Bucket, it’s a term that was coined by UCLA football coach Rick Neuheisel and made popular on the Dan Patrick Radio Show. It’s also a term that was used by Cornell basketball player Ryan Wittman prior to last week’s Sweet 16 basketball match-up with Kentucky.

Wittman’s use of the term stirred-up some unwarranted controversy when John Feinstein took it to mean “we’re the smart kids”. Turned out Wittman’s coach, Steve Donohue, had just told him to drop the “Passion Bucket” during the presser at Patrick’s request. Turns out Passion Bucket just stands for how much enthusiasm or excitement you have for something, and mine is overflowing with thoughts of college baseball and the Final Four…and even how they run together…

Brad Stevens

Butler’s in the Final Four. How cool is that? Their home floor, Hinkle Fieldhouse, is where the movie Hoosiers was filmed. The college baseball equal would be Creighton making it to the College World Series. Wait…that happened in 1991. Butler’s coach, Brad Stevens, is home grown, just like Brian O’Connor, who pitched at the Series for the Blue Jays in ’91 and who took Virginia to Omaha last year. Stevens looks so young he gets mistaken for the water boy, but he’s worked his way up the ladder since starting as Butler’s Coordinator of Basketball Operations ten years ago. By the way, Minnesota Twins reliever Pat Neshek played college ball at Butler.

Tom Izzo is a guy you just have to respect. He’s taken Michigan State to six Final Fours in 12 years. His teams grind out possessions and games like a Polish lady with big forearms grinds out Kielbasa. It got me thinking…what’s Michigan State’s college baseball counterpart? I’m going with Texas: Walk, sac bunt, infield hit, 4-3 RBI…Augie Garrido’s great pitching and small ball approach is college baseball’s answer to Izzo’s Spartans. Augie’s obviously had some success at it too. And how about Jake Boss, Jr.’s MSU baseball team? At 16-4, his Spartans open Big Ten play vs. Iowa this weekend with the best record in the conference.

Speaking of Texas, the Longhorns (18-7) leave their home state for the first time this season when they visit Oklahoma this weekend. Texas has played road games at Rice and Texas Tech with three neutral site games at Minute Maid Park in Houston.

Arizona State (23-0) and UCLA (21-0) are the only two remaining unbeaten Division One teams in college baseball.

Merrill Kelly

The Sun Devils visit Oregon this weekend in their second Pac 10 series, while UCLA hosts Stanford in it conference opener. The most amazing thing to me about ASU’s unblemished record is the fact they’ve done it without Josh Spence (10-1, 2.37 ERA in ’09) throwing one pitch so far this year. The Aussie has been out all year with an arm injury, but his teammates have more than picked-up the slack. Sophomore Jake Borup pitched all of 8.0 innings last year, but he’s 5-0, while juco transfer Merrill Kelly is tied for the national lead at 6-0. Meanwhile, Gerrit Cole (6-0, 2.63 ERA) and Trevor Bauer (5-0, 2.33 ERA) have lived-up to their expectations at UCLA. Both teams have off the charts talent and numbers in the line-up. Too bad they don’t meet until the end of the month. Oh, if you want to read a good rant on these teams and the national rankings check out what Chase Titleman has to say at Road2rosenblatt.com!

Who’s been impersonating as the three Conference USA teams that went to at least a Super Regional last year? Last year’s CWS Cinderella, Southern Mississippi (14-9) , has lost five of its last seven games, including losing two of three last week to UAB. East Carolina (17-9) just bludgeoned North Carolina Central by a combined 65-12 last weekend, but they just lost a 15-13 slug fest to UNC Wilmington and had losses to Monmouth and High Point. ECU opens C-USA play this weekend vs. Tulane and then heads to Memphis next week. Speaking of Memphis, the Tigers took two of three from Rice (14-12) last week for their first ever series win over the Owls, which are falling out of the polls with losses in five of their last eight games. All three C-USA teams have played tough opponents, all three have hit in spots and consistent pitching has eluded all three as well.

Joe Godri

Villanova (17-4) is off to its best start since head coach Joe Godri arrived in 2002. The Wildcats have a tough task ahead of them this weekend if they want to keep it going. Godri’s ‘Cats will be “big game hunting” when they travel to Louisville (21-3) for their second Big East series of the season. Godri has a tradition of plastering the logo of top-caliber teams his team has beaten on his office wall, and just one win at Louisville this weekend would go a long way. Wildcats Justin Bencsko (.485) and Matt Szczur (.500) have names that are hard to pronounce, but they’re among the nation’s hitting leaders. Louisville’s Thomas Royse (5-0, 1.42 ERA) and Neil Holland (4-0, 0.42 ERA, 6 SVs) might be the best pitchers they’ll face this season.

That series and many others start on Thursday this weekend due to Easter coming this Sunday. Here’s hoping your Easter Baskets and Passion Buckets are full!

<a href="http://www.simplesharebuttons.com" target="_blank" class="ssba_tooptip" id="ssba_tooptip"">www.simplesharebuttons.com

Virginia Is Number One For The First Time

Virginia took two out of three on the road against East Carolina in the marquee series of college baseball’s opening weekend and moved up to No. 1 in the Baseball America Top 25 rankings for the first time ever.

While Virginia, which ranked second in the preseason, was winning on the road in a tough environment at then-No. 18 East Carolina, its path to the top of the rankings was cleared when preseason No. 1 Texas was upset at home by New Mexico. The Longhorns won the opener but dropped the next two games and fell to No. 3 in the rankings, with Louisiana State moving to No. 2 after sweeping Centenary.

Texas wasn’t the only top 10 team upset on opening weekend. Preseason No. 4 Cal State Fullerton lost its first two games to Oregon and Pepperdine before salvaging the finale with a win against rival Long Beach State. Meanwhile, Rice went on the road to Stanford and was swept in a three-game series, the first time that’s happened to the Owls in five years. Fullerton and Rice fell to No. 8 and No. 9, respectively.

Since most of the preseason Top 25 teams opened the season with series wins against lesser opponents, there wasn’t a lot of movement throughout the rankings. Stanford, thanks to sweeping Rice, was the only team to join the rankings this week, jumping in at No. 18. Georgia fell out of the rankings after a 2-2 weekend.

TUCSON, Ariz. – Defending national champion Louisiana St. is ranked No. 1 in the first regular season “Collegiate Baseball” newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll after sweeping Centenary three straight over the past weekend.

The Tigers (3-0) took over the top spot when No. 1 pre-season selection Texas dropped two of three at home to start the season against New Mexico. LSU captured its 11th straight season-opening series dating back to 2000.

In game two of the series, Tiger Head Coach Paul Mainieri celebrated the 1,000th win of his coaching career during a 25-8 win. His 28-year career includes stops at St. Thomas University in Miami (1983-88), Air Force (1989-94), Notre Dame (1995-2006) and LSU (2007-present).

Poll Notes: New Mexico stunned Texas by winning two of three in Austin against the Longhorns to start the season. It marked the first time in school history that the Lobos had beaten a No. 1 ranked team. Prior to the historic victories, New Mexico was 0-9 all-time when playing the No. 1 team in the nation. All nine games were against Arizona St. After Texas won the opener, 6-2, the Lobos captured the final two contests, 6-5 and 3-1.

Another red-hot team to start the season was Oregon. The Ducks knocked off highly regarded Cal. St. Fullerton to start the season in Fullerton, Calif. and followed that off with a win at Long Beach St. before losing at Pepperdine. New to the poll this week are New Mexico and Oregon. Two teams dropped out in Rice (0-3) and Minnesota (2-1).

The “Collegiate Baseball” newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

its tradition of NCAA Division I polls for the 13th year with its 2010
preseason predictions and weekly surveys. Weekly polls will continue
from Feb. 22 through June 29 following the NCAA World Series in Omaha,
Neb.

The poll voters come from 40 college baseball writers and related media
persons from throughout the nation. After a preseason Top 35 listing,
the remainder of the polls will feature a national Top 30.

Texas is the preseason NCBWA poll choice for the third time in history.
Last year coach Augie Garrido’s crew finished second to LSU (No. 2 in
the NCBWA pre-2010 survey) in the NCAA World Series during the
next-to-last venue at historic Rosenblatt Stadium, which will be razed
after the ’10 CWS. The Longhorns also earned top billing in 2003 and ’06
while North Carolina managed its first preseason top rating in 2009.

LSU held down the No. 1 slot in both the 1998 and 2001 NCBWA preseason
selections while other No. 1 placers in the initial polls are Southern
California (1999), Miami (Fla.) (2000), Stanford (2002), Cal State
Fullerton (2005), Rice (2004, 07), and Arizona State (2008). The three
final No. 1 choices prior to LSU in 2009 have come from the Far West in
Fresno State (2008) and two-time NCAA champ Oregon State (2006 and ’07).

This week’s poll has representation by 12 different conferences among
the 302 baseball-playing schools in the 2010 NCAA Division I ranks. The
polls of 2009 had teams from 16 different DI conferences rated at least
one week. For more information or to join the NCBWA, please go to
