The 56-game slate features 32 home games, including the 25th annual South Alabama Classic.

USA head coach Steve Kittrell

“I think it’s a very competitive non-conference schedule, and it should prepare us for Sun Belt Conference play, which is getting better every year,” Kittrell said. “We’re excited about the challenges ahead and look forward to starting practice on Jan. 29.”

Kittrell’s club starts the season with 14 of its first 16 games at home. USA opens with a doubleheader against Jackson State (Feb. 19), then the Jags hit the road to take on Alabama the next day before returning home for a Sunday rematch with the Crimson Tide to round out the opening weekend.

Complete 2010 South Alabama Schedule

USA hosts the South Alabama Classic the following weekend. The tournament field includes another team with a great baseball history – Wichita State – along with North Florida and Eastern Michigan. Wichita State played in the 2002 Classic, while North Florida and Eastern Michigan will be visiting Stanky Field for the first time.

Following the tournament, the Jags take on a pair of storied programs in consecutive midweek games. USA travels to Mississippi State (March 2), then gets a visit from Tulane the following day. South Alabama’s last nonconference series is a four-game set with Siena (March 5-7).

After a pair of midweek games at home against Tennessee Tech, the Jags open Sun Belt Conference play with a three-game series at Arkansas-Little Rock. The Jags took two of three from the Trojans a season ago. The Jags follow that series with a pair of midweek games at Memphis, then return to Stanky Field for the conference home opener when they host longtime rival Louisiana-Lafayette (March 19-21).

After four more road games, including a series at Middle Tennessee, the Jags return for a five-game homestand when they host Southern Miss (March 30), New Orleans (April 2-4) and Southeastern Louisiana (April 6).

The Jags hit the road for Western Kentucky the following weekend (April 9-11), but not before making a stop along the way to take on Auburn (April 7). After the three-game set with the Hilltoppers, USA heads back home for games against Nicholls State (April 13) and Louisiana-Monroe (April 16-18). The Jags took both games of a rain-shortened two-game set against the Warhawks last year.

Kittrell’s squad then travels back to Arkansas, this time to take on Arkansas State (April 23-25), and on the way back the Jags stop for games with Nicholls State (April 27) and Southern Miss (April 28), before closing with seven of the last 10 at home.

USA rounds out the regular season hosting Florida Atlantic (May 7-9), Auburn (May 11) and Troy (May 20-22), and going on the road to face Florida International (May 14-16).

The Jags’ game against Auburn will be their fifth game of the season against an opponent from the Southeastern Conference. USA went a perfect 4-0 in home games against teams from the SEC in 2009, including a win over No. 6 Ole Miss that gave Kittrell his 1,000th career win, and a win against No. 21 Alabama in front of a Stanky Field record crowd of 4,436.

The Sun Belt Conference Championship is scheduled for May 26-29 in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

For more information about South Alabama athletics, check back with www.usajaguars.com. Season tickets for all Jaguar athletic events can be purchased by calling (251) 461-1USA (1872).

REGIONAL MATCHUPS
Belmont will trade home games with six area teams – Western Kentucky, Murray State, MTSU, Tennessee Tech, UT-Martin, and Austin Peay – which will make up a majority of the Bruins’ non-conference slate. The regional matchups begin at home with WKU (42-20) on Feb. 24. The Hilltoppers earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history after sharing the Sun Belt regular season title. Belmont will travel to WKU on April 7, to fulfill the two-game series.

OHIO VALLEY OPPPONENTS
Eleven of Belmont’s 28 non-conference games will be against teams from the Ohio Valley Conference, beginning with a three-game series against Eastern Illinois (36-14) from Feb. 26-28. After facing the 2009 regular season champions, the Bruins will travel to Murray State (34-21-1) on March 2 for the first of 21 road games during the season.

Belmont’s OVC tour resumes on March 23 when the Bruins host 2009 tournament champion Tennessee Tech (31-24-1) in Shelby Park. Senior Day is schedule for May 18 against Tennessee-Martin (20-31) – the last home game of the season. The Austin Peay series will take place on the road on April 20 and at home on the 28th.

SEC
Belmont will play two Southeastern Conference teams with Vanderbilt (37-27) on April 6 at Hawkins Field in Nashville, and Tennessee (26-29) on April 27 in Knoxville.

NEW BEGINNINGS
Belmont will face three new opponents in 2010 including Cleveland State, Eastern Michigan and Evansville. All games will be played at Shelby Park with Evansville opening the season on Feb. 19, Eastern Michigan (25-35) playing three games in two days from March 5-6, and a mid-week bout with Cleveland State (21-31) March 16 and 17.

The Bruins’ first substantial road trip will be a nine-game swing including a stop in Arkansas to play Arkansas-Little Rock for the first time since 1998.

CONFERENCE MATCHUPS
The Bruins open the conference season on the road against reigning Atlantic Sun Tournament Champion Jacksonville (37-22) on March 12. The Dolphins eliminated Belmont en route to their fourth A-Sun title and sixth berth in the NCAA Tournament.

The Bruins will play 27 conference games, three less than last season’s A-Sun slate which the Bruins finished with an even 15-15 record. All conference series are three games as most will occur over the span of two days, except Lipscomb and Florida Gulf Coast. ETSU is the lone conference member that the Bruins will not play in the regular season.

The baseball edition of the Battle of the Boulevard between arch-rival Lipscomb will be held in Shelby Park from March 19-21.

Belmont will conclude the regular season on road against Mercer on May 20 and 21.

The 2010 Atlantic Sun Championship will be held in Nashville at Lipscomb’s Dugan Field from May 25-29.

SHELBY IS HOME
Shelby Park will field all of Belmont’s 32 home games in 2009, ending nearly two decades of hosting teams at Greer Stadium – the home of the Nashville Sounds, Class AAA affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Bowling Green State University baseball has announced the release of its 2010 Falcon baseball schedule which features matchups with teams in the Big East, SEC and Big Ten conferences. Those games compliment a full MAC schedule. A total of 37 of 56 games will be played outside of the state of Ohio.

The Falcons will waste no time in finding tough competition to groom them for the upcoming season. To begin the 2010 campaign, Danny Schmitz will take his team on a road trip to the Bluegrass State for six games to begin the season.

The Falcons start the year Feb. 19-21 in Louisville, KY to open the season against the defending Big East regular season and tournament champion Louisville Cardinals. The Cardinals finished 2009 just three wins short of 50 for the

season and defending their home field with an 81 percent success rate. The Cardinal pitching staff led the Big East in team ERA (4.32) as well as in homeruns (85) and total bases (1,124). Last year UL swept BG in a three game set by a combined score of 33-12.

Complete 2010 Bowling Green Schedule

The road trip through Ohio’s southern neighbor continues with three games against the University of Kentucky. Though UK baseball finished fifth in the SEC East Division, College Baseball Newspaper has tabbed the Wildcats as having the sixth-best recruiting class in the nation, an honor the program has received two years in a row.

To open the month of March the Falcons will head further south to the former home of the Cleveland Indians spring training program, Winter Haven, Florida. The Falcons will spend nine days (March 5-14) in Winter Haven and play as many games during that span. Only two of the eight opposing teams return for this year’s Russ Matt Central Florida Invitational with Indiana and Sacred Heart, but six very skilled teams will visit to provide the Falcons some tough competition.

The Falcons will take the field against Northeastern, who finished the 2009 season with a 28-25 overall mark, to open their slate during the invitational. The next three days will feature match ups against Rhode Island, Butler and Sacred Heart. Those three teams sport a combined record of 77-89-1 from a season ago with Rhode Island garnering the most success following a 37-20-1 campaign a season ago. After enjoying an off-day at the mid-way point of the week long trip, the Falcons will head back into battle against the Ivy League’s Yale University for a double-header against the Bulldogs. North Dakota State and Indiana will round out the schedule for the duration of the tournament before the Brown and Orange return to Bowling Green.

Last year, the Falcons finished 5-3 during their stay in Winter Haven with signature wins over Bradley in extra innings and against 2010 recurring opponent Eastern Kentucky University. Of the two teams that the Falcons will play in back-to-back years in the tournament, Indiana and Sacred Heart, the Falcons were 1-1 in games against those opponents having lost to the Hoosiers 15-7 and defeating the Pioneers in a pitcher’s duel, 1-0.
Bowling Green will bring baseball back to northwest Ohio when they open their home schedule with a local rival in the Findlay Oilers. The Falcons will engage in a battle for I-75 South on March 16 at Warren E. Stellar Field for the home opener. Bowling Green has won their last ten home openers at Warren Steller Field and has not lost since a 7-6 defeat to the Wright State Raiders in the 1999 season opener.

Schmitz and Company continue to yield southern hospitality as the team travels east straight from EKU to play another Big East team in the West Virginia Mountaineers. The Mountaineers finished third in the Big East last season and only lost five games at home. The Falcons had not played a Big East team since 2008 when the Falcons fell to Villanova 10-8 in Bradenton, FL. This year, the teams will meet at a neutral site at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio.

Of the early non-conference schedule, head coach Danny Schmitz said, “This is probably the toughest schedule we’ve put together. It is a schedule that we wanted to challenge our team with. We’re doing that for a reason. We have to get ourselves ready for conference play because the Mid-American Conference is an outstanding baseball conference.”

Schmitz continued, “We have high expectations [of the players]. You still have to earn it each day you cross the white lines. This schedule is going to be very, very competitive. We hope our kids are going to be up to the task.”

With their return back to Falcon country, BGSU will open its conference slate with MAC West foe Central Michigan on March 24. It will be the only time the Chippewas and the Falcons will play in 2010 but will ready Bowling Green for a home weekend set with Northern Illinois beginning two days later.

Bowling Green will step out of conference again to play Atlantic-10 power house Dayton for a single showdown to close out the month of March. The Dragons and Falcons have had three of their last five matchups cancelled due to weather since 2007. In those two matchups, the Dragons have come out on top both times. In their lone matchup in 2007, the Falcons took the Dragons to 12 innings before losing 8-7 in an extra-inning thriller.

The next four contests between April 2 and April 6 will take the Falcons into Michigan for a three-game series against Eastern Michigan. BG will then hop on the bus to East Lansing, MI. for its first contest with a Big Ten opponent in the Michigan State Spartans. Since 2001, Bowling Green has a 15-19 record when playing in the state of Michigan with nearly as many weather cancellations as wins.

The Falcons will then embark on their final game with a Michigan school against Michigan on April 14. Last year the Falcons beat the Wolverines 8-3 after not having played them since the 2002 season when the Falcons lost 4-3.

Right across the border heading back into Ohio, MAC rival Toledo will be waiting for the visiting Falcons for a weekend series to be held in the Glass City. Bowling Green possess 102 wins against Toledo over their 88 year rivalry. That stands as the most wins BGSU has over any school they have played in program history.

After back-to-back home games against Dayton and Western Michigan on April 20-21, the Falcons hit the road again, this time going to Athens for three games against Ohio and then heading to northeast Ohio for the season finale versus Cleveland State.

Six consecutive Mid-American conference home games follow on the Falcon schedule when Bowling Green plays host to the Miami Redhawks and Akron Zips to close out April heading into the first week of May (April 30-May 9).

For the first time since April 26, 2006 the Falcons will head back to South Bend, Ind. for a single out-of-conference game with the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. The last time Bowling Green took the trip to South Bend the Falcons outscored the Irish 11-8 on their home field. That win had broken a ten game winless streak against Notre Dame since 1990.

Bowling Green then heads to Kent, Ohio to take on the once nationally ranked Golden Flashes, who had taken two-of-three from the Falcons in 2009. Kent State finished one game behind the Falcons in the MAC standings last year after ranking second in the conference in team pitching as well as in team batting, finishing behind Bowling Green.

Another Horizon League team will come to the Falcons’ territory when the Penguins of Youngstown State come to Steller Field on May 18. Despite a 16-35 record a season ago, the Penguins return six of eight regular position players from their starting lineup and all three of their starting pitchers from last season.

“I think year in and year out there are some outstanding teams,” said Schmitz on the quality of MAC baseball this year. “Kent State as well as OU will be very strong again this year. Miami (OH) was a little young last year, but they’ve gained a lot of experience. We finished off the season with Akron and had a heck of a battle with them for three games and we expect Akron to be very much improved. You really have to bring the ‘A-game’ this year.”

This year the Mid-American Conference Tournament will be held in Chillicothe, Ohio at VA Memorial Stadium. Should the Falcons win a bid to be in field of eight MAC teams to participate in the tournament, they will return to the same field that they are scheduled to play West Virginia earlier in the season.

The Spartans will open the 2010 campaign on Feb. 19 with the first of three games in Greenville, S.C., where they will take on Furman, Clemson and Miami (OH).

“We are excited to play another challenging schedule for the 2010 season as we continue to build the foundation of our program here at Michigan State,” said Boss. “Playing in Greenville to start the season against outstanding competition in Clemson, Furman, and Miami (OH) will be a difficult task, but that trip is one of the highlight of our year because of the good people of Greenville and their hospitality.”

Jake Boss Jr.

The Spartans will then take part in the second annual BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge in St. Petersburg and Clearwater, Fla. MSU will meet Seton Hall (Feb. 26), Louisville (Feb. 27) and West Virginia (Feb. 28) in the Challenge.

Complete 2010 Michigan St. Schedule (PDF)

Following the Challenge, the Spartans’ will take on Southeast Missouri State, Samford, Eastern Michigan and two SEC opponents in Mississippi State and Alabama, in their seven-game spring trip (March 5-12) through Mississippi and Alabama.

“The BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge will be just that, as we will face three outstanding opponents,” said Boss. “The spring trip should be a great experience at Mississippi State, Samford and Alabama.”

After a three-game series with Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., March 20-21, MSU will open its home schedule at McLane Baseball Stadium with four games against Oakland University, beginning on March 26.

The Spartans kick off Big Ten play on April 2 when they host Iowa for a three-game set. The Spartans will also host conference foes Ohio State (April 16-18), Illinois (April 23-25) and Indiana (May 14-16). MSU will travel to Minnesota (April 9-11), Penn State (April 30-May 2), Purdue (May 7-9) and Northwestern (May 20-22).

The Green and White will meet rival Michigan just twice in 2010 – at home on May 11 and in Ann Arbor on May 12.

In addition to in-state schools Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Oakland, the Spartans will also take on Central Michigan (three times) and Western Michigan (once).

“Weekend series’ at Notre Dame and at home against Oakland will prepare us for a very challenging Big Ten slate,” Boss said. “Midweek games vs. EMU, WMU, CMU and Bowling Green will be equally challenging, but our players came to Michigan State to play against outstanding competition and we feel like we have given them that opportunity.”

Six teams on the Spartans’ schedule – Clemson, Louisville, Alabama, Minnesota, Ohio State and Indiana – all appeared in last year’s NCAA Tournament.

The Spartans will play four games at Oldsmobile Park, highlighted by the April 7 exhibition match-up with the Lansing Lugnuts in the Crosstown Showdown. Last year’s Showdown drew a stadium-record crowd of 12,992.

KU will play 13 games against teams ranked in Baseball America’s 2009 final Top 25 poll, including Louisiana State and Texas, the clubs that participated in the College World Series final. The schedule, announced Thursday by Head Coach Ritch Price, also includes 25 games at KU’s Hoglund Ballpark, one at historic Rosenblatt Stadium in its final year of existence, as well as one at Kauffman Stadium – home of the Kansas City Royals.

“Our players are really looking forward to our 2010 schedule,” Price said. “It’s going to be one of the toughest in America, but we’re looking forward to some of the special places we get to play.”

Kansas opens the season at home for the first time since 2002, with a three-game series against Eastern Michigan, Feb. 19-21. KU’s annual game against Wichita State in Lawrence will be Feb. 23, wrapping up the team’s first homestand of the year.

KU will participate in the Peoria Spring Training Classic in Peoria, Ariz., at the spring training home of the Seattle Mariners. After one game at 2009 College World Series participant Arkansas in Fayetteville, the Jayhawks return home to host Iowa and Tabor, before a grueling stretch that ends with the Big 12 series opener at Baylor, March 26-28.

Between March 12-28, the Jayhawks will play 10 games away from Lawrence, including a three-game series at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge, La., against defending national champ, LSU.

After a five-game homestand to start the month of April, the Jayhawks will be on the road for nine-straight contests, beginning with a non-conference game against Creighton at Rosenblatt Stadium on April 7, and ending with a non-conference match up with Missouri at Kauffman Stadium on April 21.

Following the Missouri game at Kauffman Stadium, KU will play 10 of its final 17 games in the comforts of Hoglund Ballpark, including home series against Big 12 foes Texas Tech (April 23-25), Missouri (May 7-9) and Oklahoma (May 21-23). KU will also host in-state rival Kansas State in the first game of a three-game series.

“Our 2010 schedule will prepare our team to compete in the Big 12 Conference and, if we’re successful, our RPI should qualify our team for the NCAA Tournament, and help us reach our goal of being a Top 25 program,” Price said.

By CB360 Editor Sean Stires

I have been thinking about writing this for a while, so I thought I should actually sit down and do it before October is over. It seems like every year around NCAA Tournament selection time we hear about “growing college baseball”. IE: “If we are going to grow college baseball (insert a team from the north) needs to have a chance to be in the tournament”.

I don’t completely disagree with that. I do think that if the game of college baseball is to grow in popularity teams north of the Mason Dixon line need to be represented in the field of 64. However, I don’t think that sending Rhode Island or St. John’s to regionals in Austin or Tempe (hypothetically) is the best way to grow and promote the sport in those areas. Here are a few things that I do think that would help to grow the sport in the north (and it won’t even take more fertilizer or watering.)

Allow fall exhibition games that do not count against the 56 game limit. Teams like Texas, Rice and Baylor (to name a few) are already playing a handful of games each fall so they don’t have to cram a bunch of mid week games into a shorter season. Teams like Michigan, Indiana and Iowa are playing games this fall as well. Teams from the Big 12, SEC, ACC, and Pac 10 don’t have to worry about losing a few games in the spring, because they know their RPIs are going to be high enough to get them an at-large NCAA bid if they win 30 games, but teams from the north need every game they can get to 40 wins as they build their at large resume.

Use college football to showcase college baseball in the north. (This is assuming step #1 is in play.) This can most easily be accomplished in September when the weather is still in the 80s and 90s pretty much across the country (including places like Minneapolis, Ann Arbor, South Bend, and Columbus…just in case those from states farther south might not be aware). Fresno State was the defending national champion last year. The Bulldog football team opened the 2008 season at Rutgers. What if the Scarlet Knight baseball team could have had the defending champs play on their campus in a fall exhibition game (or games)? Oregon State went to Penn State to play football two years ago when the Beaver baseball team was the defending CWS champion. It’s a win-win situation for everyone. Fresno State and Oregon State are never going to go to New Jersey or Pennsylvania in March or April, but September is perfect, and they don’t even have to worry about whether they

Penn State's Beaver Stadium with baseball's Medlar Field at Lubrano Park upper right

win or lose. Just show up, play a game Friday night and/or Saturday morning before the football game ) when 50,000 to upwards of 100,000 fans are around to see the games) and then do some tailgating and watch a football game and go home. It’s not limited to defending national champs though. Some other football games that would be good fits for a fall baseball pairing include: Arizona @ Iowa, USC @ Ohio State, Stanford @ Notre Dame, North Carolina @ UConn, Oregon @ Purdue, Virginia @ Indiana, Florida State @ BYU (I could go on). All of those football games have either taken place recently or will take place within the next couple years.

Use football part II. The idea of using college football to promote college baseball is not limited to having one school’s baseball team tag along with the football team to go barnstorming in the north. (EG: Penn State vs. Oregon State in both football and baseball as mentioned above.) Baseball teams like LSU, Texas, Arizona State, Miami, Florida State (and a few others) could go just about anywhere independent of their football teams and draw a crowd. So, Michigan plays Eastern Michigan in Ann Arbor on the gridiron on September 19, but Michigan plays Texas on the diamond the night before or that same morning.

BE CREATIVE. Schools like Rhode Island and St. John‘s don’t have the big football programs to prop up the rest of their programs like Penn State, Michigan or Notre Dame, but they could still make something happen in the fall. How about the Red Storm playing Joba Chamberlain’s alma mater, Nebraska, at Yankee Stadium in September after the Yankees play Baltimore? Or what if Dustin Pedroia’s college team, Arizona State, played Rhode Island at Fenway Park?

Boston's Fenway Park

The biggest objection to something like this would likely come from the schools like Texas, LSU and ASU who would have to pick up the bill for the extra travel in September. But look at it this way: Those three traditional powers will average about 36 home games next spring. Michigan, St. John’s, Notre Dame, and Ohio State averaged 24 home games last spring.

Ohio State played its first 21 games in Florida in 2009 before its first home game on March 31st. Next season Texas will play its first nine games in Austin, and won’t leave the Lone Star state until a 3-game set at Oklahoma the first weekend in April. The Longhorn’s only other trip out of Texas during the regular season is at Kansas State in early May.

In other words, it shouldn’t be too much to ask the biggest programs in the sport to make an extra trip or two in September to help the growth of the sport.

Have you ever been in a campus basketball arena when the Tennessee or UConn women’s basketball teams come to town? Those teams are treated like rock stars by adoring young fans in front of sell out crowds, because they are the teams that are on national TV all the time. If the Vols and Huskies are the Pied Pipers of women’s hoops, the Longhorns and Tigers can take the “ping” to the people on Saturdays in September.
