The opening weekend of the 2012 college baseball season closed on Sunday with an assortment of noteworthy results involving top-50 teams in the CB360 Composite National Rankings (CNR) – as #3 Stanford completed an impressive sweep of #11 Vanderbilt (18-5) … Maryland won again (5-1) to take its series at #16 UCLA … and homestanding Pepperdine edged #17 Oklahoma (7-6) in the deciding game of that series.

Nine series still were up-for-grabs entering Sunday, with the favorites (based on the CNR) winning five of them. Cal Poly cranked out yet another win over #45 Oklahoma State (6-0), completing an opening-week statement with the surprising series sweep. #50 USC similarly took all three games from visiting #39 Jacksonville, including a 4-3 decision on Sunday.

There were four other games on Sunday that pitted CB360 top-50 teams against each other: #19 Cal State Fullerton took the series finale at #1 Florida, 8-5 (Gators won games-1 & 2) … #6 Rice completed a sweep of #38 Florida International (8-1) … #13 TCU beat #33 Mississippi, 5-3, for a split of two games (Sat. rained out) … and #47 Texas State beat visiting #43 Wichita State, 7-4.

Sunday’s 40 games involving CB360 top-50 teams produced 11 upsets (29-11), meaning that the ranked/higher-ranked teams won 73% of those games – the same win pct. for opening weekend among CB360 top-50 favorites (97-37 … also 30-13 on Fri./70% and 39-12 on Sat./77%).

In addition to the wins by Cal Poly, Maryland, Pepperdine, USC, Fullerton and Texas State, Sunday’s other five top-50 upsets included:
• Duke 5-2 at #7 Texas
• Illinois 9-4 vs. #24 St. John’s (in St. Petersburg, FL)
• UC Santa Barbara 13-12 in resumed game vs. #27 Oregon State
• Washington State 6-5 at #32 Mississippi State
• Central Michigan 14-7 at #44 Troy

There were 33 series featuring CB360 top-50 teams during the opening-week action, with 19 of them resulting in sweeps. In addition to those referenced above, teams that opened 3-0 in series action included (some finished on Sat.): #2 South Carolina (vs. VMI), #5 Texas A&M (Illinois-Chicago), #8 Arkansas (Villanova), #12 Florida State (Hofstra), #15 Miami (Rutgers). #20 Georgia (Presbyterian), #21 Arizona State (Western Michigan), #22 California (Pacific), #26 Stetson (George Washington), #29 Baylor (Oral Roberts), #30 Central Florida (Long Island), #31 East Carolina (Milwaukee), #35 Georgia Southern (Tenn.-Martin), #36 College of Charleston (South Alabama) and #37 Dallas Baptist (Southeast Missouri).

The other 31 CB360 top-50 teams either were swept in series (3), played to series splits (16), were competing in opening-week tournaments (10) or played at home vs. two opponents over the weekend (2). In addition to those that posted series sweeps, there were a couple other CB360 top-50 teams that went unbeaten during opening week while playing multiple teams: #10 LSU (two wins vs. Air Force; one vs. Alcorn State), #25 UC Irvine (3-0 at MLB Urban Invitational in Houston) and #48 Purdue (3-0 at Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge in St. Petersburg, FL, area).
