MILWAUKEE, WI – Former UCLA baseball letterwinner and major leaguer Ron Roenicke has been named as the Milwaukee Brewers’ manager, the organization announced on Thursday. Roenicke, who starred on UCLA’s baseball team in 1977, becomes the first Bruin to be named as a major league manager.

Roenicke has served as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim since 2000, spending the last five seasons as the team’s bench coach alongside Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia. Roenicke served as the Angels’ third base coach for six seasons (2000-05).

Roenicke played in 52 games for UCLA in 1977, batting .284 with nine home runs, 40 RBI and a .391 on-base percentage. He came to Westwood after playing at Mt. San Antonio College in 1975 and 1976. He was selected in the first round (17th overall) of the 1977 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers and made his major league debut with the organization in 1981. Roenicke played in 527 major league ballgames from 1981 through 1988.

As an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Roenicke helped lead the organization to the 2002 World Series championship, five American League West Division titles and one American League Wild Card.

Roenicke is the uncle for former UCLA ballplayer and current Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Josh Roenicke, who pitched and played in the outfield for the Bruins from 2003-06.
