RICHMOND, Ky. – For the first time in his career, former Eastern Kentucky University baseball player Sam Holbrook will be a member of the six-man umpiring crew for the World Series. Holbrook, who will work first base in Game 1 then move behind the plate for Game 2, is one of two Fall Classic rookies on an otherwise veteran crew headed by John Hirschbeck.

Holbrook was a pitcher and a four-year letter-winner at EKU from 1984-87 under legendary head coach Jim Ward. He was a member of three OVC championship teams during that time (1984-86).

A resident of Lexington, Ky., Holbrook is currently in his ninth season as a professional umpire. He worked the 2004 All Star Game, the 2008 ALCS and was a member of the crew on hand for Roy Halladay’s historic no-hitter against the Reds in this year’s NLDS.

Game 1 of the World Series is slated for tonight at 8:00 p.m. in San Francisco. Game 2 is set for Thursday night at 8:00 p.m.
