19 Teams To Play 30 Games To Open Season…

PARK RIDGE, Ill. – The Big East and Big Ten conferences, in conjunction with the St. Petersburg/ Clearwater Sports Commission, today released the schedule for the fourth annual Big Ten/Big East Baseball Challenge. The 2012 Challenge will feature 10 teams from the Big Ten and nine teams from the Big East playing 30 games over three days to open the college baseball season from Feb. 17-19.

The 2012 Challenge will feature Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State and Purdue from the Big Ten and Cincinnati, Connecticut, Louisville, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, St. John’s, Seton Hall, South Florida and West Virginia from the Big East. The event will be played at current and former Major League facilities in the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area, including Bright House Field and Florida Auto Exchange Stadium, the respective spring homes of the Philadelphia Phillies and Toronto Blue Jays. Games will also be played at Clearwater’s Jack Russell Memorial Stadium and St. Petersburg’s Al Lang Stadium and Walter Fuller Baseball Complex.

The 2012 Challenge will feature tripleheaders at Al Lang and Jack Russell on Friday and Saturday and doubleheaders on Sunday. Friday features an evening doubleheader at Florida Auto Exchange, while Bright House will host a twin bill on Saturday night. The Challenge also includes 10 games at Walter Fuller with doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday and six games on Sunday.

The Big Ten won the inaugural Challenge in 2009, 15-9, while the Big East was victorious in 2010, 17-13, and in 2011, 14-10.

CollegeBaseball360.com – in conjunction with coaches and media-relations representatives from the 20 teams – has selected the all-tournament team for the 2010 Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge (held Feb. 26-28, in the St. Petersburg, Fla., area). The selections include 11 first-teamers, 11 second-teamers and seven honorable mention.

Selections were based on statistics during the three games, in addition to other criteria such as clutch play, defensive contributions, team leadership and other intangibles. The honorees include at least one from all 20 participating teams, led by three from Louisville and two each from seven other teams (Cincinnati, Iowa, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State, St. John’s and Villanova).

Shortstop Joe Panik (pictured) helped St. John’s join Louisville as the only 3-0 teams at the Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge. Panik batted 5-for-8 with 3 walks (also reached twice via HBP) and factored into nearly half of  SJU’s total runs (6 of 13) during the tournament. … Note: eight other teams went 2-1: Cincinnati, Connecticut, Iowa, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State and Villanova.


The all-tournament selections feature 11 juniors, nine sophomores, five seniors, three freshmen and a fifth-year senior. Four are New Jersey natives and four more are from Ohio, plus three from Kentucky, two each from California, Indiana, Illinois, New York and Pennsylvania – and one each from Florida, Iowa, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

The honorees include one pure leadoff hitter, two that batted in the #2 spot all weekend, a pair of 3-hole hitters and three cleanup batters (plus two 5-hole hitters, one 6-hole, two 7-hole, one 9-hole and six who batted in multiple lineup spots during the tournament).

Ohio State pitcher Alex Wimers is the only repeat selection to the Challenge all-tournament team. (Note: all class years referenced below refer to academic standing … additional headshots and action photos will be added to this release, time permitting).

The first day of competition in the second Big Ten/BIG EAST Baseball Challenge is complete, with the Big Ten winning 7-of-10 games to take a four-game cushion into Saturday’s series of 10 more games (followed by 10 more on Sunday, the tournament’s final day).

The Big Ten outscored the BIG EAST by only 10 runs (56-46), with the day’s action featuring three 1-run games (two of them in extra innings and four others decided by 2-run margins (plus one 3-run game). The BIG EAST had one blowout win (Villanova 13, Purdue 5), while the Big Ten posted the day’s biggest margin when Illinois defeated Notre Dame, 11-1.

Seawolves To Play Three NCAA Tournament Teams

Stony Brook, N.Y. – Contests against three 2009 NCAA Tournament participants including Alabama highlight the 2010 schedule for the Stony Brook University baseball team, as released on Tuesday by head coach Matt Senk.

Stony Brook opens the season with a neutral site game at UNC Wilmington against Akron on Friday, March 5. The Seawolves play UNCW the next day before playing both Akron and UNCW on March 7.

The Seawolves will then head to Tuscaloosa, Alabama for a three-game series with the University of Alabama, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament a season ago. Following the series at Alabama, who was ranked in the top-25 much of last season, the Seawolves will take on Big East foe Seton Hall before returning to University Field for its home opener on March 17 against Iona.

SBU then returns to the road for the Seton Hall Strike Out Cancer Tournament before heading to California from March 26-31 for a six-game trip which will include tilts against Pepperdine, San Diego State and Cal State Bakersfield. San Diego State advanced to the NCAA Regional in 2009.

Following a four-game series at LeMoyne after the California trip, the Seawolves will begin America East Conference play. The conference schedule will incorporate a new six-team format with two divisions. Stony Brook will play a pair of three-game series’ against the two teams in their division (Binghamton and UMBC) and will play one four-game series against each of the other three teams (Hartford, Albany and Maine).

The Seawolves open conference play at defending America East champion Binghamton (April 10-11) before hosting UMBC the next weekend (April 17-18) at University Field. SBU will then play consecutive road series’ against Albany (April 24-25), Maine (May 1-2) and UMBC (May 8-9).

Stony Brook concludes the regular season with home series against Hartford (May 15-16) and Binghamton (May 21-22). The four teams with the best overall win percentage (in either division) will advance to the America East Championship, played May 26-28 at the highest seed.

Stony Brook returns 13 letter-winners from a season ago including all-conference selections- senior first baseman Robert Dyer (Selden, N.Y.), junior infielder Chad Marshall (Paris Ontario), sophomore right hander Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif.) and sophomore right hander Nick Tropeano (West Islip, N.Y.).

Bronx, N.Y. – Fordham baseball head coach Nick Restaino announced the team’s 2010 schedule today, as the Rams will begin play on February 19th in Virginia.

Except for 1944, the Fordham baseball program has played every year since 1859 and stands as the winningest program in NCAA history. The Rams will be competing for their fifth Atlantic 10 Championship tournament berth in

the last seven years, in hopes of being at the 2010 Atlantic 10 Championship, which will take place May 26-29 at Campbell’s Field in Camden, New Jersey.

Fordham is scheduled to have 17 home games this season, which includes four Atlantic 10 weekend series at Houlihan Park.

Fordham will open the season at Old Dominion for a three-game series, February 19-21, followed by three games in Durham, North Carolina, against the Duke Blue Devils, February 26-28.

The Rams will then have their home opener on March 3rd, as they host cross town rival Manhattan College at Houlihan Park.

Fordham returns to the road for a three-game set at George Mason, March 5-7, before a home game against New York Tech on March 10th. The Rams then begin a seven-game stretch in Florida over Spring Break, where they have a three-game series with Pittsburgh (March 12-14) in West Palm Beach, Florida, a two-game series with Miami (Fla.) (March 16-17), and a three-game series versus Michigan at the Mets Training Facility in Port St. Lucie, Florida (March 19-20).

The Rams then begin Atlantic 10 play on the road at Richmond for three games, March 26-28. Besides Richmond, Fordham will play conference road series at St. Bonaventure (April 9-11), Dayton (April 23-25), Saint Joseph’s (May 7-9), and George Washington (May 14-16).

The Rams’ first home conference series will take place April 1-3, as they host Rhode Island. Fordham will also host Atlantic 10 opponents Saint Louis (April 16-18), La Salle (April 30-May 2), and Duquesne (May 20-22) at Houlihan Park.

In non-league play, Fordham will renew rivalries with Stony Brook, Fairfield, Rutgers, Iona, St. John’s, Columbia, Marist and Seton Hall this season.

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern head coach Paul Stevens today (Dec. 7) announced the Wildcats’ 2010 schedule, featuring a doubleheader against the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee at Miller Park in Milwaukee.

After playing games at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome (Minnesota Twins) and U.S. Cellular Field (Chicago White Sox) last season, the Wildcats can add a visit to another Major League ballpark to their resume. The twinbill against UWM will be played April 28 following a 12:10 p.m. game between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

NU is scheduled to play its first 23 games away from Evanston beginning with two games apiece against George Mason and Winthrop Feb. 19-21 in Rock Hill, S.C. The Wildcats compete in the second-annual Big Ten/Big East Challenge the following weekend in Florida, taking on Connecticut, Rutgers and Seton Hall in the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area.

The Wildcats make a return trip to the Metrodome March 5-7 where participates in the 26th-annual Dairy Queen Classic against host Minnesota, Loyola Marymount and Oklahoma State. NU follows up the trip north by heading to Las Vegas March 11-13 for a four-game series against UNLV.

Northwestern embarks on its spring trip March 20 as it starts things off in Winter Haven, Fla., where the ‘Cats face Bucknell, UMBC, Cornell and Dartmouth. NU then heads to Deland, Fla, where it plays four contests against Stetson March 26-28.

The Wildcats return to Illinois and set to play a solo contest at UIC March 30 before opening Big Ten play at home April 2-4 against defending Big Ten regular season champion Ohio State.

On the heels of a mid-week game against Northern Illinois that is being played in Rockford, Northwestern hits the road in conference play for the first time April 9-11 as it treks to Penn State.

Minnesota invades Rocky Miller Park the following weekend, followed by a home game against Illinois State. NU then embarks on stretch during which it plays its next nine games on the road beginning with three games at Purdue April 23-25. Following the doubleheader against Milwaukee at Miller Park, the ‘Cats play a weekend series at Illinois and then a solo game against Valparaiso at U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, Ind.

Northwestern finally returns home May 7 as it faces defending Big Ten tournament champion Indiana in a weekend set. After a home game against UIC May 11, the Wildcats hit the road for the final time during the regular season as they travel to Michigan.

The 2010 regular season concludes May 20-22 as NU hosts Michigan State.

The 2010 Big Ten Tournament is slated for May 26-30 and is being held at Huntington Park in Columbus, Ohio, for the second consecutive year.

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State baseball program and head coach Jake Boss Jr. announced the 2010 Spartan schedule this week. The Spartans will open the 2010 campaign on Feb. 19 with the first of three games in Greenville, S.C., where they will take on Furman, Clemson and Miami (OH).

“We are excited to play another challenging schedule for the 2010 season as we continue to build the foundation of our program here at Michigan State,” said Boss. “Playing in Greenville to start the season against outstanding competition in Clemson, Furman, and Miami (OH) will be a difficult task, but that trip is one of the highlight of our year because of the good people of Greenville and their hospitality.”

The Spartans will then take part in the second annual BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge in St. Petersburg and Clearwater, Fla. MSU will meet Seton Hall (Feb. 26), Louisville (Feb. 27) and West Virginia (Feb. 28) in the Challenge.

Following the Challenge, the Spartans’ will take on Southeast Missouri State, Samford, Eastern Michigan and two SEC opponents in Mississippi State and Alabama, in their seven-game spring trip (March 5-12) through Mississippi and Alabama.

“The BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge will be just that, as we will face three outstanding opponents,” said Boss. “The spring trip should be a great experience at Mississippi State, Samford and Alabama.”

After a three-game series with Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., March 20-21, MSU will open its home schedule at McLane Baseball Stadium with four games against Oakland University, beginning on March 26.

The Spartans kick off Big Ten play on April 2 when they host Iowa for a three-game set. The Spartans will also host conference foes Ohio State (April 16-18), Illinois (April 23-25) and Indiana (May 14-16). MSU will travel to Minnesota (April 9-11), Penn State (April 30-May 2), Purdue (May 7-9) and Northwestern (May 20-22).

The Green and White will meet rival Michigan just twice in 2010 – at home on May 11 and in Ann Arbor on May 12.

In addition to in-state schools Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Oakland, the Spartans will also take on Central Michigan (three times) and Western Michigan (once).

“Weekend series’ at Notre Dame and at home against Oakland will prepare us for a very challenging Big Ten slate,” Boss said. “Midweek games vs. EMU, WMU, CMU and Bowling Green will be equally challenging, but our players came to Michigan State to play against outstanding competition and we feel like we have given them that opportunity.”

Six teams on the Spartans’ schedule – Clemson, Louisville, Alabama, Minnesota, Ohio State and Indiana – all appeared in last year’s NCAA Tournament.

The Spartans will play four games at Oldsmobile Park, highlighted by the April 7 exhibition match-up with the Lansing Lugnuts in the Crosstown Showdown. Last year’s Showdown drew a stadium-record crowd of 12,992.

Two trips to Florida and five home conference series highlight 2010 ledger

CINCINNATI – Two trips to Florida to open the season and 31 home games highlight the 2010 University of Cincinnati baseball schedule. After falling just one win short of its second consecutive 30-win season, the Bearcats look to eclipse that plateau and contend for a BIG EAST Conference Championship in 2010.

UC also will host LeMoyne College (March 10), Niagara (March 12-14), Toledo (March 19-21), Kentucky (March 30), Xavier (April 28), and Miami University (May 11) at Marge Schott Stadium in non-conference contests.

The Red and Black hit the road for non-conference games at Butler (March 23), at Dayton (March 24), at Ohio (April 20), at Xavier (April 27), at Wright State (May 5), and at Miami University (May 12). After hosting the Joe Nuxhall Classic last year, UC will travel up the road to Miami (OH) and McKie Field at Hayden Park to participate in the second Joe Nuxhall Classic April 13-14. For the second year in a row, the teams competing for the Joe Nuxhall Classic title will be UC, Miami (OH), Xavier, and Wright State.

UC plays five of its nine conference series’ at home this season, but the conference slate begins March 26-28 when the Bearcats travel to Plymouth Meeting, Penn., to take on Villanova. Other conference road series include Seton Hall (April 9-11), Notre Dame (23-25), and Connecticut (May 8-9).

USF (April 1-3), St. John’s (April 16-18), West Virginia (April 30-May 2), Pittsburgh (May 14-16), and Georgetown (May 20-22) will all make the trip to Clifton to play in Marge Schott Stadium, which was voted on by BIG EAST players and coaches as the favorite conference venue to play in.
