TAMPA – University of South Florida head coach Lelo Prado announced the release of the 2010 USF baseball schedule, a slate that includes five 2009 NCAA Tournament participants (11 games) and seven in-state opponents.

Prado also announced that, the Bulls will play a portion of their home schedule away from Red McEwen Field at George Steinbrenner Field and the

University of Tampa Baseball Stadium to accommodate the construction set to begin in early April.

“2010 is going to be an exciting year for USF baseball,” said Prado. “This schedule is going to challenge us every time we take the field right from the beginning when we go to Gainesville.”

The Bulls will be tested by the challenging 27-game BIG EAST schedule and will also face Sunshine State rivals Florida, Miami, Florida Atlantic, Stetson, Jacksonville, North Florida and UCF.

The Bulls will kick off 2010 by heading north on Interstate-75 to Gainesville to face Florida in a three-game set on Feb. 19-21. The Gators will make a return trip to Tampa on April 21 for a mid-week tilt at George Steinbrenner Field.

Complete 2010 USF Schedule

USF will then participate in the 2010 Big Ten – Big East Challenge in Clearwater for the second consecutive year. Last year’s Challenge, which featured eight programs from the BIG EAST and all of the Big Ten baseball-playing institutions, was very well attended, including a final-day attendance of 5,000 for the six games played at the Naimoli Complex.

On Friday, February 26, the first day of the 2010 Challenge, USF will take on Ohio State University at 4:30 p.m. at Al Lang Field. The meeting will mark the eighth meeting and first since 1997 between the Bulls and Buckeyes, with USF holding a 4-3 edge.

The Bulls’ second contest will be under the lights of Bright House Stadium on Saturday against the Fighting Illini of Illinois. The Bulls will look to snap a four-game losing streak dating back to 2004 and even the all-time series at four apiece as the Illini have taken four of the seven all-time meetings.

Prado and his Bulls will wrap up the Challenge on Sunday against familiar opponent Michigan at 1:00 p.m. at the Naimoli Complex. They will have a chance to avenge a loss suffered in the inaugural Big East – Big Ten Challenge when they dropped a 6-5 decision to the Wolverines in the opening game.

Tickets for the second BIG EAST-Big Ten Baseball Challenge, hosted by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, are available online at www.BigTenBIGEASTChallenge.com.

After the Challenge, the Bulls will collide with Miami in Tampa at George M. Steinbrenner Field as part of the Inaugural Florida Four Tournament on March 2. It will mark the first of two mid-week clashes with the Hurricanes, who made their 37th consecutive NCAA appearance in 2009. USF will make the trip to Miami on April 28.

Following the Florida Four, the Bulls will make the trek to Norman, Okla., March 4-7 for four games including a pair of contests against the Sooners, another 2009 NCAA tournament team. The Bulls will also take on Stephen F. Austin and Western Illinois during their stay in Norman.

After returning from Norman, USF will stay in Florida for the rest of the month hosting a pair of mid-week games against Jacksonville (March 9-10), and then host a pair of weekend series against Eastern Illinois (March 12-14) and Mercer (March 19-21).

USF will get another crack at Ohio State in March, as the Bulls and Buckeyes will meet on the 24th in a final tune-up before BIG EAST conference play begins at Red McEwen Field.

Due to the recently announced construction of a new USF baseball stadium, all home games played after the Notre Dame series (March 26-28) will be played at either George Steinbrenner Stadium or University of Tampa’s Spartan Stadium.

The new baseball stadium will remain on the same footprint as the existing field, but will be realigned in order to create a plaza and ticketing area that is shared with the new softball stadium. Current plans have the softball field located south of the baseball stadium.

“We are very pleased with the progress and design of the new baseball stadium ,” said USF Executive Associate Director of Athletics Bill McGillis.’ It is on a fast-track, and we have every intention of having it completed in time for the first pitch of 2011. We are anticipating a spectacular facility – a very intimate setting with team and spectator amenities that will be first class in every way. There is not doubt it will be one of the premier college baseball stadiums in the entire country.”

The baseball stadium is expected to include new step-down team dugouts, bullpens, covered batting cages, multiple party pavilions, a press box and a 1,500 seat spectator grandstand with a shade canopy, an elevated, shaded entertainment or hospitality deck and service amenities. The overall capacity of the stadium is expected to exceed 3,000 and is being designed to accommodate additional seating that will enable USF to host NCAA Regionals and Super Regionals.

“We are very happy to accommodate the construction plans for the new stadium by moving to games to Steinbrenner Stadium,” added Prado. “I want to personally the thank New York Yankees, Felix Lopez (Senior Vice President with the New York Yankees), Mark Newman (senior VP of baseball operations of the New York Yankees) along with the University of Tampa because of their help it allows us to begin construction of our facility and have it completed for the 2011 season.”

The 27-game BIG EAST schedule consists of home series against Notre Dame (March 26-28), Georgetown (April 9-11), Villanova (April 23-25), Seton Hall (April 30-May 2) and Connecticut (14-16). The road slate consists of trips to Cincinnati (April 1-3), Rutgers (April 16-18), St. John’s (May 7-9) and will close out the 2010 season with a trip to Pittsburgh (May 20-22) for a three game set in the Steel City.

USF will host home series against Georgetown, Villanova and Connecticut at Steinbrenner Stadium, along with a mid-week match-up against UCF on April 6. UT Spartan Stadium will serve as the Bulls’ home for the Seton Hall series and April 27 game against Florida Gulf Coast.

Weekday games are slated for a 7 p.m. start, however times are subject to change. Be sure to check GoUSFBulls.com regularly for any schedule changes and updates.

Earlier this year, the BIG EAST Conference announced the return of the BIG EAST Championships to Clearwater at Bright House Field. It has been chosen as the site of the 2010 and 2011 BIG EAST Conference Baseball Championships.

Bright House Field served as the venue for the 2006, 2008 and 2009 BIG EAST Championships. The 2010 BIG EAST Conference Baseball Championship will be played May 26-30 (Wednesday through Sunday), with the top eight teams in the regular season standings qualifying. The 2011 conference tournament will take place May 25-29. The winner of the BIG EAST Championship receives the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.

The championship game of the 2010 BIG EAST tournament is scheduled to be televised live on ESPNU.

The Bulls lost just five players from a 2009 ball club that went 18-9 in the BIG EAST en route to a second place finish, just a half game back of regular and tournament champion, Louisville. The 2009 BIG EAST Coach of the Year, Lelo Prado, enters his fourth year at USF with a vision to take his program to next level.

2009 Freshmen All-Americans Sam Mende and Todd Brazeal headline a solid core of returners, and the Bulls also bring back their ace in Randy Fontanez, who went 7-3 in 13 starts last season. 2009 BIG EAST Batting Champion Junior Carlin and 2008 Freshman of the Year Ryan Lockwood, also return for the 2010 season.

The 2010 schedule begins with a doubleheader at Alabama State as part of a three-game series from Feb. 27-28. The Leathernecks then travel to Saint Louis for a single game against the Billikens on March 3 before traveling to Norman, Okla. to take part in the Sooner Classic from March 5-7. Western will face tournament-host Oklahoma on March 5 before a double-header against Stephen F. Austin on March 6. The Leathernecks will conclude the tournament with a single game against USF on March 7.

Western will travel back to Saint Louis for a single game tilt on March 9 before traveling to Missouri to play a single game against the Tigers on March 10. The Leathernecks continue their swing through the Big XII with a two game series at Oklahoma State from March 16-17.

The team then heads south for a three-game series at UAB from March 19-21 before facing Arkansas-Little Rock for two games from March 23-24. Western Illinois returns to the Midwest for a three-game series at Iowa from March 26-28.

Western’s home schedule opens up with a game against Coe College on March 31 before the team heads back to Iowa for a single game on April 6. The Leathernecks will then return to Macomb for an 11-game homestand beginning with a single game against Clarke College on April 7. The homestand continues as Western opens up Summit League play with a four-game series against North Dakota State (April 9-11) before welcoming Bradley for one game on April 14.

“It’s always nice to be at home for an extended period of time,” Villano said. “I think we’ll need that long homestand after being on the road for over a month. It’s always good for the team to be able to come back to a place that they know really well.”

The Leathernecks will then welcome another Summit League opponent for a four-game series when IPFW comes to town April 16-18. The homestand concludes with a game against Illinois College on April 20.

The Leathernecks will then travel to Davenport, Iowa for a neutral-site game against the Hawkeyes on May 18.

Western concludes its 2010 regular-season schedule with a four-game series at South Dakota State from May 20-22.

Highlighted by six teams that played in the 2009 NCAA Tournament (Baylor, Sam Houston State, Texas, Texas A&M, TCU, Texas State), a full slate of 33 Southland Conference games and 26 home tilts, the ledger features a total of 52 contests this spring.

“This will be yet another challenging schedule for our program,” said Corbett, who begins his 10th season this spring. “Not only do we play six clubs that played in the postseason last year, but we also have several tough road contests that will prepare us for the 33-game Southland Conference season. I’m looking forward to seeing how this year’s group handles this schedule and performs as the year progresses.”

UTSA’s home schedule includes a pair of contests at Wolff Stadium, the home of the San Diego Padres’ Double A affiliate San Antonio Missions. The Roadrunners will host Iowa on March 16-17 at “The Wolff,” which has been a fixture on the

The Birds open the season with a six-game home stand at Roadrunner Field. UTSA will host Houston Baptist from Feb. 20-21 before welcoming Indiana State to the Bird Bath the following weekend (Feb. 26-28).

The year’s first road trip will take place from March 2-14 when UTSA plays eight games in a two-week span. The trip kicks off with a March 2 tilt at TCU, which came one game short of playing in last year’s College World Series. A four-game set at San Francisco follows from March 5-7 and the journey ends the weekend of March 12-14 when the Birds open conference play at Southeastern Louisiana.

The Roadrunners return to the Alamo City for the two-game series with Iowa and UT Arlington visits the Bird Bath two days later in the first of three conference contests that will be played from March 17-19.

Following a March 24 tilt at Baylor, UTSA returns to Roadrunner Field to host three-time defending Southland Tournament Champion Sam Houston State from March 26-27. The Birds have won 12 of the last 13 regular season meetings with the Bearkats.

A five-game road trip that includes stops at Houston (March 30), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (April 1-3) and Texas A&M (April 6) follows and the Birds then return home to square off against Stephen F. Austin (April 9-11) and Houston (April 13).

UTSA embarks on a season-long nine-game road trip from April 16-May 1 when they play at Northwestern State (April 16-18), Lamar (April 23-25), 2009 national runner-up Texas (April 27) and I-35 rival Texas State (April 30-May 1), which won the Southland’s regular season title a year ago.

The Roadrunners come back to the Bird Bath for a season-best eight-game home stand that begins on May 2 with the conclusion of the Texas State home-and-home series. Nicholls will come to town from May 7-9, along with McNeese State (May 14-16) and TCU (May 18).

UTSA closes out regular season play with a three contests at Central Arkansas from May 20-22.

The Southland Tournament is scheduled for May 26-29 at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi. The circuit’s top eight teams will qualify for the four-day postseason event that determines the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

NORMAN, Okla. — University of Oklahoma Vice President/Athletics Director Joe Castiglione and head coach Sunny Golloway released the Sooners’ 2010 baseball schedule consisting of 56 regular season games on Wednesday.

Overall, Oklahoma will face 12 opponents, for a total of 28 games, that participated in last year’s NCAA

OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway

Tournament, including five non-conference opponents in Arkansas, Indiana, Jacksonville, San Diego State and TCU.

Complete 2010 Oklahoma Schedule (PDF)

Five of the 12 NCAA participants from 2009 (Arkansas, Kansas State, San Diego State, TCU and Texas) recorded 40 or more wins a year ago, while Arkansas (College World Series), TCU (Super Regional) and Texas (College World Series) advanced deep into the tournament.

The Sooners will kick things off on Feb. 19 in the San Diego State Tournament held at Tony Gwynn Stadium. OU begins action in San Diego against the host Aztecs. The Sooners also face Indiana and San Diego over the weekend.

The SDSU Tournament is just one of four that the Sooners will participate in during the 2010 regular season. Following the trip to San Diego, OU travels across the country to Florida for the Jacksonville Tournament hosted by Jacksonville University. OU will face a trio of first-time opponents in Valparaiso, Jacksonville and Richmond.

Oklahoma will host its first regular season tournament in Norman from March 4-7 as South Florida, Western Illinois and Stephen F. Austin visit L. Dale Mitchell Park for the Sooner Classic. The 1985 season was the last time OU hosted a regular season tournament (Knor Sooner Shootout) but it was held at the All Sports Stadium in Oklahoma City.

The fourth and final tournament, The Whataburger Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas, is one of the top tourneys in Division I baseball each of the last five years. The 2010 field includes OU, Mississippi State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UCLA.

The non-conference slate also features home games against Dallas Baptist, Houston Baptist, Massachusetts, Arkansas Pine Bluff, TCU, Memphis and Arkansas, while OU travels to DBU, TCU and Oklahoma State for midweek games.

The game on Tuesday, April 13 with OSU marks the first year that the Bedlam Series will be extended to four regular season games, with the home team alternating each season. The contest will not count towards either team’s Big 12 records and the Cowboys will return the trip in 2011.

“Year in and year out we look to schedule some of the best non-conference competition in order to prepare us for the grueling Big 12 season,” said Golloway. “This year’s schedule is once again evidence of that. We are excited for our fans as we host several exciting match ups at home in and out of conference play, including the extra Bedlam game.”

The 27-game Big 12 schedule begins at home against Baylor (March 19-21). The Bears are the first of four 2009 NCAA Tournament teams to visit Norman in Big 12 play. OU also welcomes Texas (April 1-3), Missouri (April 9-11) and Kansas State (April 30-May 2) for three-game sets.

The Big 12 road series include Nebraska (March 26-28), Texas Tech (April 16-18), Texas A&M (April 23-25) and Kansas (May 21-23).

The Bedlam Series, presented by The Oklahoman and Oklahoma Farm Bureau Insurance, will be held May 7-9. Game one between OU and Oklahoma State is set for May 7 in Tulsa at Drillers Stadium. Then the teams return to Oklahoma City for the final two games of the series slated for May 8 and 9 at the AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.

For the sixth consecutive year, the Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament will be held in Oklahoma City at the Bricktown Ballpark from Wednesday, May 26 through Sunday, May 30.

The NCAA Tournament begins on campus sites with the NCAA Regional (June 4-7) and NCAA Super Regional (June 11-14). The 2010 College World Series will be played in Omaha, Neb., at Rosenblatt Stadium from June 19-30.

The Sooners return 17 letterwinners from the 2009 squad that made the program’s fourth appearance in an NCAA Regional Final in the last five years. OU finished second in the Big 12 standings and earned a No. 7 national seed while hosting a regional for the second time in four years.
