It came right down to the wire, but number one overall MLB draft pick Bryce Harper signed his first professional contract with the Washington Nationals just before the deadline late Monday night. The 17-year-old junior college player inked a five year contract worth a reported $9.9 million, including a $6.25 million signing bonus.

Harper’s deal was inked just seconds before the 12:01 am E.T. deadline early Tuesday morning. Like Harper, last year’s top pick, Stephen Strasburg, is also represented by Scott Boras. Like Harper, Strasburg’s negotiations with the Nationals went down to the wire.

Harper is expected to be introduced to the Washington D.C. media next week during the Nationals’ next homestand. He will begin his career in the Gulf Coast League and then play in the fall Instructional League.

Seven other college players who were taken in the first round of June’s draft also inked deadline deals. The highest of those pick is former Ole Miss pitcher Drew Pomeranz. The lefty was taken with the #5 pick and signed with the Cleveland Indians for $2.65 million.

<a href="http://www.simplesharebuttons.com" target="_blank" class="ssba_tooptip" id="ssba_tooptip"">www.simplesharebuttons.com

A Look At Teams Trending In Different Directions

The fourth week of the college baseball season is under way, and we are starting to get a true feel for what teams are (and aren’t). UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton were each top 10 teams at the start of the season, so who could have predicted they would be a combined 9-12 heading into this weekend’s action?

Here are a few teams that caught my eye this week:

Stock-Up

UCLA: The Bruins lost a lot of offensive production from last year’s team, but they’re 11-0 thanks to solid contributions throughout the line-up as well as stellar pitching. UCLA is batting .372 and averaging 8.7 runs a game while the pitching staff has a 2.00 ERA with 130 strikeouts and just 24 walks in 90 innings. Dean Espy (.440, 3 HR, 12 RBIs), Steve Rodriguez (.400, 5 HR, 11 RBIs) and Niko Gallego (.314, 3 HR, 13 RBIs) have powered the offense, while Gerrit Cole (3-0, 2.50 ERA) and Trevor Bauer (2-0, 2.45 ERA) have combined for 49 strikeouts with just 6 BB in 32 2/3 IP.

Duke: Since going 1-3 to open the season in Waco, TX vs. Baylor and Georgia (with a win over the Bulldogs) Duke has rattled-off eight straight wins. Granted, the wins have been over Fordham, Temple and Quinnipiac, but 3 of the Blue Devil’s last four wins have been by shutout. The Duke pitching staff has a 0.80 ERA over its last five games with 55 strikeouts and 13 walks. It would be easy to write the Blue Devils off as they prepare to open ACC play this weekend vs. arch rival North Carolina, but Duke did take 2 of 3 games from the Tar Heels last year. Could this be the year Duke gets to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1961?

Kansas State: The Wildcats, fresh off the program’s first NCAA Tournament in 2009, had a lot of questions coming into the season. They lost Big 12 Pitcher of the Year A.J. Morris as well as several key bats, including Justin Bloxom. They’re 9-2, and while they don’t have a “signature” win, they’re hitting .342 with 30 stolen bases and averaging 9.6 runs a game. Carter Jurica leads the way with a .449 average, 15 runs, 20 RBIs, and 6 SB. But what’s most impressive is K-State’s pitching. The Wildcats aren’t overpowering anyone, but they don’t walk anyone either. The pitching staff has a 3.83 ERA with 77 Ks and just 17 walks in 101 IP. Ryan Daniel (3-0, 2.81 ERA) has 10 strikeouts and just one free pass in 16 IP, while Evan Marshall (2-0, 1.71 ERA) is yet to walk a batter with 13 Ks in 20 IP.

Villanova: If we’re going to mention the K-State Wildcats we have to mention the Villanova Wildcats, which handed KSU its last loss last week in Winter Haven, FL. The win over K-State along with an 8-1 victory over Indiana at the the Big Ten/Big East Challenge gives VU two wins over 2009 NCAA Tourney teams. Outfielder Justin Bencsko is batting .525 with a 1.218 OPS to lead the Wildcats (10-2) to their best start in head coach Joe Godri’s nine years at the helm. The senior has spearheaded an offense that is averaging 9.0 runs a game despite just one home run.

Stock-Down

Georgia: The Bulldogs have lost five straight after Tuesday’s 11-1 drubbing at the hands of Kennesaw State. Georgia (6-7) was outscored 62-11 in those games by KSU, Alabama and Florida State (3 games). Bulldog batters are hitting just .288 and they’ve struckout 95 times while drawing just 45 walks. Those numbers combined with 21 errors (.957 fielding %) and a 7.55 staff ERA make it easy to see why Georgia is struggling. They’ll hope to get better with a 3-game series with Siena this weekend and a midweek game at Georgia Tech before opening SEC play next week vs. Auburn.

San Diego: Since opening the season with three home wins over Indiana, the Toreros have lost 7 of their last 10 games to fall to 6-7. San Diego has plenty of pop with 11 home runs, but it’s batting just .283 with a .363 on-base percentage. 18 errors have led to 12 unearned runs that have proven costly.

San Diego State: The Aztecs are just 5-7 heading into their SDSU Invitational this weekend. With the losses of Stephen Strasburg and two other starters pitching would have appeared to be the concern heading into 2010. However, Addison Reed, who saved 20 games last year, has transitioned nicely into a starter. The junior (2-1, 3.20 ERA) leads the pitching staff with 23 strikeouts and has issued just five walks. Bryan Crabb (1-1, 1.72) has also been solid. Tony Gwynn’s .963 fielding percentage (17 errors) and .261 batting average have been the biggest problem.

Fresno State: Just two years removed from a National Championship, Fresno State is a shell of the 2008 Wonderdog team. The Bulldogs are hitting .312 with 16 home runs but….(drum roll please)…defense (the recurring theme this week) is the worst of any team mentioned this week. FSU (6-6) has committed 26 errors already this season to lose 6 of their last 9 games since opening 2010 with three wins over Nebraska. Fresno State should be fine once WAC play begins if Mike Batesole’s defense can cure itself.

2009 Tournament Champion: Utah beat San Diego State 9-3 in the championship game.

Last season proved to be an historic one for Mountain West Conference baseball. For the first time ever the conference received three bids to the NCAA Tournament when Utah, San Diego State and TCU were all tabbed. Utah was the #6 seed at the conference tournament and earned its berth after first eliminating TCU and then beating the Aztecs in the title game. San Diego State’s Stephen Strasburg also became the first MWC player ever taken with the first overall pick in the Major League Baseball Draft when he was picked by the Washington Nationals last June.

Line-Up Turnover: BYU loses five players who each started at least 49 of 54 games last season. Included in that group are Kent Walton (.377, 9 HR), Steve Parker (.361, 9 HR) and Stetson Banks (.348, 23 SB). Walton and Parker were both drafted by the Oakland A’s, while Banks was selected by the L.A.
Perplexing Pitching: Senior RHP Blake Torgerson (6-3, 5.66 ERA) is the only returnee of BYU’s top five pitchers from last season. Marc Oslund (7-1, 2.49 ERA) is serving a Church mission in North Carolina, starter Adam Miller (3-3, 4.04 ERA) is serving on mission in Mexico and Jeremy Toole (5-5, 5.77 ERA) was drafted by the San Francisco Giants.

Rare Air: New Mexico led the nation with its .363 team batting average and 47 triples in 2009.

Lobo Line-Up Lowdown: Four Lobos hit above .400 last year and two of them, catcher Rafael Neda (.415, 7 HR, 49 RBIs, .629 slg%) and OF Ryan Honeycutt (.406, 6 HR, 53 RBIs), are back to lead the offense in 2010. 2009 MWC Player of the Year Mike Brownstein (.414, 11 triples, .611 slg%, 20 SB) and Kevin Atkinson (.400, 61 RBIs) are both departed, as is Brian Cavazos-Galvez (.392, 15 HR, .737 slg%). Australian Adam Courcha (.313, 30 starts) will assume a bigger role this year, as will Max Willett (.355, 46 RBIs, 12 SB) and Justin Howard (.309, 6 HR, 41 RBIs).

Bring It On: New Mexico’s only NCAA Tournament appearance was in 1962, but the lack of NCAA bids hasn’t kept Ray Birmingham from challenging his team. The Lobos open the season with a 3-game series at 2009 College World Series runner-up Texas. They play a 3-game set at USC March 5-7, two games at Arizona March 23 & 24 and two games at 2009 CWS team Arkansas in April.

San Diego State

2009 Record: (41-24, 15-9)

Mascot: Aztecs

Head Coach: Tony Gwynn

Location: San Diego, CA

Vitals: .291 BA, 47 HR, 53 SB, .379 OBP, .974 Fld%…4.04 ERA, 4 CG, 24 SV, 571 K, 165 K, .264 opp. BA

Big Season: San Diego State’s NCAA Regional berth last year was the program’s first since 1991. Aztec head coach Tony Gwynn was still in the middle of his Hall of Fame MLB career in ’91, while Stephen Strasburg was not quite 3 years old. The 2009 Aztecs set a program record with their .974 fielding percentage. SDSU was 1-2 at the Irvine Regional with losses to Virginia and Irvine. It’s only win eliminated defending national champion Fresno State.

Big Shoes To Fill: Strasburg (13-1, 1.32 ERA, 195 K) famously became the number one overall pick by the Washington Nationals in last year’s MLB Draft. His ERA and strikeouts led the NCAA. While he was the centerpiece of the Aztec pitching staff, he is not the only loss the staff has to overcome…

Depleted Pitching: Fellow Starters Tyler Lavigne (8-2, 3.05 ERA) and Jon Berger (4-5, 5.83 ERA) are gone as well. Those two and Strasburg combined for 26 of the team’s 41 wins, 353 of 571 strikeouts and all four of the staff’s complete games last season. Closer Addison Reed (0.65 ERA, 20 SV) returns to lead the staff, but it will be up to a new set of faces to give him the save opportunities he had last year.

The Line-Up: The Aztecs lose team triple crown winner Erik Castro (.382, 11 HR, 56), but return Cory Vaughn (.326, 10 HR, 51 RBIs) who finished second to Castro in the three key stats, while leading the team with 15 stolen bases. Mitch Blackburn (.312), Pat Colwell (.300) and Ryan O’Sullivan are among other top returnees. O’Sullivan hit 6 home runs and also won four games in 11 starts on the mound as a freshman.

Early Test: SDSU opens the season by hosting a four-game series vs. 2009 NCAA Regional host Oklahoma. OU closer Ryan Duke and Addison Reed are both on the NCBWA Preseason Stopper of the Year Watch List.

TCU

2009 Record: (40-18, 15-5)

Mascot: Horned Frogs

Head Coach: Jim Schlossnagle

Super Season: TCU had a season of first in 2009. The Horned Frogs were a number one seed and hosted an NCAA Regiional for the first time in program history last year, and they didn’t waste the opportunity. After going 3-0 vs.

Kyle Winkler

Wright State (1) and Oregon State (2) TCU advanced to its first-ever Super Regional as well, falling two games to one in Austin, TX to eventual national runner-up Texas.

TCU Turnover: The top three batters, Matt Vern (.360, 17 HR, 54 RBIs, 16 SB), Matt Carpenter (.333, 11 HR, 13 SB, 6 triples, 47 RBIs) and Chris Ellington (.331, 6 HR, 52 RBIs), are gone from last year’s Super Regional squad. Seniors Matt Curry (.315) and Bryan Holaday (.300, 10 HR, 48 RBIs) and Sophomores Taylor Featherston (.322, 5 HR, 8 SB) and Jason Coats (.316, 6 HR) head the list of returnees who will have a chance to step into those roles.

The Great Equalizer: TCU is loaded with returning pitching in 2001. The Horned Frogs return their top four pitchers, Paul Gerrish (7-2, 3.84 ERA), Kyle Winkler (7-1, 4.15 ERA), Tyler Lockwood (4-2, 4.71 ERA), and Eric Marshall (2-2, 1.48 ERA, 9 SV), while losing just 3 of 13 pitchers who saw action last year. Marshall is on the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List. Winkler has been invited to the 2010 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Trials.

Tough Tests: TCU plays its first 7 and 9 of its first 11 games of the season vs. 2009 NCAA Tournament teams, and just three of those games ( vs. Sam Houston State) are at home. The Horned Frogs play at Baylor, at Cal State Fullerton (3) and single games vs. Rice and Missouri at the Minute Maid Classic in Houston in the season’s first three weeks.

UNLV

2009 Record: (26-32, 9-15)

Mascot: Rebels

Head Coach: Buddy Gouldsmith

Location: Las Vegas, NV

Vitals: .329 BA, 49 HR, 56 SB, .395 OBP, .961 Fld%…6.89 ERA, 1 CG, 3 SV, 342 K, 242 BB, .318 opp. BA

Power Outage: The Rebels lose four players, Jesse Wight (.345, 10 HR, 37 HR), Ryan Thornton (.327, 10 HR, 42 RBIs), 2B Bryan Resnick (.327, 7 HR, 35 RBIs), and SS Anthony Morel (.324, 3 HR, 44 RBIs) who combined to hit 30 of the team’s 49 home runs last year. Resnick and Morel also formed the Rebel’s middle infield. Top reliever Marc Baca (3-1, 4.05 ERA, 3 SV), who had the pitching staff’s best ERA, is gone as well.

Returning Rebels: Senior outfielders Rance Roundy (.364, 3 HR, 32 RBIs) and Scott Berke (.329, 2 HR, 40 RBIs, 10 SB) is UNLV’s top returning hitters. They’re joined by seniors Drew Beurlein (.407), Brian Gilbertson (.370) and Kyle Kretchmer (.329) who all look for for bigger roles this year after starting a combined 48 games in ’09. Sophomore RHP Tanner Peters (5-7, 4.90 ERA), who tied for the team-lead with his five wins last year, is the top returning Rebel hurler.

Northern Exposure: The Rebels host four games each with Northern teams Columbia, Temple and Northwestern over the first month of the season.

Utah

2009 Record: (28-31, 8-16)

Mascot: Utes

Head Coach: Bill Kinneberg

Location: Salt Lake City, UT

Vitals: .303 BA, 59 HR, 55 SB, .377 OBP, .964 Fld%…6.13 ERA, 0 CG, 11 SV, 421 K, 206 BB, .317 opp. BA

Cinderella Season: Utah entered the 2009 Mountain West Conference Tournament as the #6 seed, but the Utes went 5-1 (including two wins over #1 seed TCU) to claim the program’s first ever MWC title. With the championship came Utah’s first NCAA appearance since 1960. The Utes were the #4 seed at the Fullerton Regional where they were 2-2 with wins over Georgia Southern and Gonzaga sandwiched between two losses to the host Titans. Utah was the only sub-.500 team to qualify for the NCAA field last year.

USA Ute: Head coach Bill Kinneberg will serve as one of the assistants on this year’s USA Collegiate Baseball National Team. He was the pitching coach for the US National Team in 2007. Fullerton head coach Dave Serrano

Plenty Of Returnees: Utah returns five of its top seven batters from last year’s NCAA team. Senior Nick Kuroczko led the team in averge (.353), triples (9), slugging percentage (.558), and on-base percentage (.454). Tyler Yagi (.343), HR & RBI leader C.J. Cron (.337, 11 HR, 58 RBIs), Devin Walker (.314, 8 HR), Michael Beltron (.309), Rick Cornu (8 HR), and Cooper Blanc (7 HR) are all back as well. Cron received Freshman All-American status last year.

Why Not Whatcott: Jordan Whatcott (5-3, 4.19 ERA) was 31st round pick by the L.A. Dodgers in last year’s draft, but opted to return for his senior year. Whatcott’s return gives the Utes three of their top four starting pitchers back in 2010. They do lose closer Greg Krause (3-4, 4.93 ERA, 4 SV).

So Long Salt Lake City: Utah plays its first 18 games on the road with games in five different states. California (vs. UC Davis), Texas (vs. Sam Houston State), Washington (vs. Washington State), Oregon (vs. Oregon State & Portland), and New Mexico (conference opener vs. UNM).

Pitcher of the Year: Kyle Winkler – TCU

Conference Champion: TCU – with New Mexico and Utah right behind them.

(With the end of the year fast approaching, we’re counting down some of the top moments from the 2009 college baseball season. We’ll have one a day through New Year’s Eve.)

The Virginia vs. San Diego State ace Stephen Strasburg in the Irvine Regional opener wasn’t exactly David vs. Goliath, but the Cavalier’s 5-1 college baseball’s 2009 version of the shot heard ’round the world.

Virginia head coach Brian O'Connor

Strasburg was nothing less than stellar all season in leading the Aztecs to their first NCAA Tournament in 18 years. The righthander was unbeaten at 13-0 and he was the national ERA and strikeout leader. Virginia was a former also ran in the ACC, but they were in their sixth straight NCAA Tournament since Brian O’Connor had taken over as head coach.

Phil Gosselin's 1st inning HR helped UVA beat Stephen Strasburg (UVA photo)

Even if Virginia could somehow beat Strasburg the Irvine Regional field was filled with other landmines. The host Anteaters were ranked #1 in the nation and the defending national champion Fresno State Bulldogs were seeded fourth.

Virginia struck first when the second batter of the game, Phil Gosselin, connected on a solo home run. Afterward O’Conner said the home run sent Strasburg and the Aztecs the message that the Cavs “weren’t going to back down”. UVA was aggressive yet patient, making Strasburg throw 50 pitches while giving-up single runs in each of the first two innings.

Strasburg gave-up two runs on eight hits in his seven innings that afternoon. He struckout 15 with no walks (but two wild pitches) in what turned out to be his only loss of the season in the last collegiate start of his All-American career. SDSU reliever Andrew Leary gave up three runs, including a solo home run to Steven Proscia, in two innings of work.

Virginia starting pitcher Robert Morey couldn’t match Strasburg’s 15 strikeouts (Morey had 9 in six innings), but he put-up a number that was even more important: zero runs. “It’s hard to lose when you don’t

UVA pitcher Robert Morey

give-up any runs,” O’Connor later said. “That’s what it came down to.”

That’s what Virginia’s Regional win and its entire NCAA Tournament came down to. The Cavs’ pitching staff surrendered just two runs in three games en-route to winning the Irvine Regional. (They outscored the Anteaters by a combined 9-1 in their two wins.) After a 4-3 12-inning loss to Ole Miss in game one of their Super Regional Virginia battled back to win 4-3 and 5-1 to earn the program’s first College World Series berth.

OConnor

(Press “Play” above to listen to O’Connor talk about the Regional win in a podcast interview with Collegebaseball360.com Editor Sean Stires.)

Virginia’s 2.65 team ERA in nine games was second in the nation during the 2009 NCAA Tournament. Vanderbilt had the lowest ERA at 2.45, but the Commodores played just five games. Strasburg’s talent was good enough to make him the overall number one pick in the 2009 MLB draft, but Virginia’s team pitching carried them to Omaha.

Oak

<a href="http://www.simplesharebuttons.com" target="_blank" class="ssba_tooptip" id="ssba_tooptip"">www.simplesharebuttons.com

Since the first time I heard of San Diego State’s Stephen Strasburg, I have always heard the “a” in his last name pronounced “ahh”…like the dentist “Open-up and say ahhh”.

Now, two different TV talking heads have taken it upon themselves to go with a different flow. Ryan Burr, who was the ESPN anchor on Monday’s “Road To Omaha Selection Show”, and Greg Amsinger from MLB Network have decided that the “a” in Strasburg is more like an “ouch”.

Burr mispronounced Strasburg’s name throughout Monday’s selection show, and what made it even more comedic is the fact that Kyle Peterson and Will Kimmey were saying Strasburg with the correct “ahh” pronunciation.

Apparently, nobody at ESPN saw a need to correct Burr, because during Thursday WCWS coverage he was going with the same pronunciation while promoting Friday’s San Diego State vs. Virginia Regional match-up on the ESPN family of stations.

I hope I spelled “Burr’s” name correctly. ESPN never put his name up on the screen during the selection show like they did for Peterson and Kimmey.

My biggest point is just that these guys get paid good money to 1. Deliver the facts correctly and 2. Say the players’ names correctly. Is it so much to ask that they do that?

However you say his name, Strasburg had a great game Friday: 15 K and no BB in 7 IP, but his SDSU team lost 5-1 to Virginia in their NCAA Regional opener in Irvine.

It’s no secret that Strasburg will be the number one pick in the soon-arriving MLB draft, so let’s hope Bud Selig says it right.

<a href="http://www.simplesharebuttons.com" target="_blank" class="ssba_tooptip" id="ssba_tooptip"">www.simplesharebuttons.com

Collegebaseball360.com Editor Sean Stires with his thoughts from Wednesday’s CWS action…

Arkansas’ Mr. Clutch is at it again…Andrew Darr’s 12th inning RBI double ended-up being the game-winner in the Razorbacks’ 4-3 win over Virginia in Wednesday’s CWS elimination game. Darr entered the game in the 9th inning as a defensive replacement after Virginia loaded the bases. Darr’s walk-off double vs. Florida State ended the Super Regional nearly two weeks ago & sent Arkansas to the College World Series. (Podcast with Darr is available by clicking HERE.)

Brett Eibner more than atoned for his short start on the mound vs. LSU Monday when his 2-out 9th inning home run tied the game 3-3 to send it to extra innings.

ESPN’s Mike Patrick was half correct when he talked about the importance of Zach Cox’s 2-out, 2-strike single that came just before Eibner’s HR. However, Patrick said it was important, because if Cox hadn’t singled Eibner’s HR would have just been a solo shot. It was more important than that though, because if Cox hadn’t reached base the game would have been over, and Eibner wouldn’t have even come to the plate again until 2010.

Speaking of TV…wouldn’t it be nice to make as much money as ESPN analyst Orel Hersheiser makes to butcher players’ names? In his time in Omaha he has incorrectly pronounced: Arkansas pitchers Dallas Keuchel and Brett Eibner, Virginia pitcher/DH Danny Hultzen, Arizona State SS Drew Maggi, and MLB’s #1 draft pick Stephen Strasburg. His analysis is usually spot-on, but c’mon Orel is it too hard to just write the names pho-net-i-cal-ly? Is it a wonder Howard Cosell used to opine about the “jockocrasy” in TV sports?

Speaking of TV II…it was pretty touching to see and hear business owners from the Rosenblatt area getting choked-up while trying to talk about the CWS moving to downtown Omaha after next year.

Speaking of TV III…Pretty cool North Carolina’s Garrett Gore got to man one of ESPN’s TV cameras for a spell during the game. Gore said afterward “That was it, took control, my show”. I’m sure Cosell would have been appalled though!

Good job by the umpires in the Arkansas-UVA game to make sure they got John Hicks’ fifth inning home run call correct. They conferred after it was originally not called a home run, but Hicks got credit for the round-tripper after they correctly decided the ball hit a fan’s hat and then another fan’s glove and not Arkansas left fielder Chase Leavitt’s glove before it caromed back onto the field.

Great piece of bunting by Virginia’s Keith Werman. The pinch-hitter entered the game in a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the 9th with runners at first and second and no outs. Werman bunted the first two pitches of the at-bat foul and then took two balls from fellow lefty Dallas Keuchel before he finally dropped down a two-strike bunt to move the runners to second and third.

How about Keuchel’s relief appearance just two days after starting against Cal State Fullerton? The southpaw tossed four shutout innings, while fanning five and giving-up just three hits to improve to 9-3 this season. It was the junior’s first relief outing this season.

Speaking of pitching…a tip of the hat to starters Drew Smyly of Arkansas and fellow freshman lefty Danny Hultzen of Virginia. The two combined to pitch 11.0 innings with 14 strikeouts and no walks on 13 hits. Smyly’s string of 19 straight shutout innings in the NCAA Tournament ended on the previously mentioned fifth inning HR by Hicks. He was starting for the first time since losing a no-hitter in the ninth inning of the Razorbacks’ Regional Championship game vs. Oklahoma. (Podast with Smyly is available by clicking HERE.)

It’s been great having Green Day’s music playing into breaks during Super Regional and now College World Series games on ESPN.
