LAS VEGAS – New UNLV baseball head coach Tim Chambers started assembling his coaching staff by announcing Tuesday that veteran pitching coach Stan Stolte has joined the Rebels.

Stan Stolte

Stolte is no stranger to baseball in the Silver State, having served on the coaching staff at in-state rival Nevada, Reno for the past 14 seasons, including spending the last four as the associate head coach of the Wolf Pack program. Stolte also served as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator during his time in Reno, and UNR made NCAA tournament appearances in 1997, 1999 and 2000.

“Stan Stolte was the first name that came to my mind when I got the job,” Chambers said. “I have known Stan for a long time and he is a great person. I brought him in because he is a good pitching coach and he will teach me a lot about this level.”

Stolte has developed 22 all-conference pitchers, three freshman All-Americans and two WAC Pitcher of the Year winners, including 2010 honoree Brock Stassi, who led the league with a 3.43 ERA while compiling a 7-4 overall record. Stolte has coached 34 pitchers that have made it to the professional ranks, including Dan Reichert, who was a 1997 first round selection of the Kansas City Royals. He also mentored Chad Qualls and Darrell Rasner, who were taken in the second round of the MLB draft in 2000 and 2002 respectively. Qualls was a key bullpen member of the Houston Astros when they advanced to the 2005 World Series, and he is currently the closer for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

“There were not many jobs that I would leave the community of Reno and the school for, but this was a no-brainer,” Stolte said. “I can tell that they want to get this thing going and I want to be a part of something special with coach Chambers.”

Prior to coming to UNR he spent seven years as an assistant coach at the University of the Pacific. Stolte coached at Northwest Missouri State for two years before heading west to Pacific. His coaching career began in the high school ranks as head coach at Clarence-Lowden High School in Iowa, where he was 110-45. He won four district titles and made one Iowa high school final four appearance in six years as a prep mentor. He then coached at Northwest Missouri State prior to returning to his alma mater, Muscatine (Iowa) Community College to coach the 1989-90 season.

An infielder and pitcher at Muscatine and St. Ambrose (Iowa) College, Stolte helped St. Ambrose win an NAIA regional baseball championship in 1984. He was a two-sport athlete at Muscatine playing baseball and basketball. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from St. Ambrose University in 1984 and his master’s degree in education from Northwest Missouri State in 1989.

Stan and his wife Susan have a son, Jacoby.

LAS VEGAS – Tim Chambers has been named the sixth UNLV head baseball coach in history, Director of Athletics Jim Livengood announced Friday.

One of the country’s most successful baseball mentors at the high school, American Legion and then junior college levels over the past two decades, Chambers takes over the Rebels after 11 seasons leading the nationally ranked College of Southern Nevada program. He has also served as athletics director for CSN since 2003.

Tim Chambers

“Tim Chambers brings an incredibly accomplished resume with him to UNLV after his years at Bishop Gorman High School and at the College of Southern Nevada,” Livengood said. “His knowledge for the game, his love of this community and his total commitment to excellence were all factors that brought us to the decision to hire him to lead our baseball program. Timing is everything and this is the right time for Tim Chambers and the right time for UNLV.”

Named the Scenic West Athletic Conference Coach of the Year four times, including this season, Chambers built the Coyotes’ powerful program from the ground up and has enjoyed stunning success: seven conference championships, three region titles, two district crowns and the 2003 JUCO World Series Championship. This year’s squad, led by top Major League Baseball draft pick Bryce Harper, was ranked second in the nation and finished 52-16 overall after reaching the national semifinals earlier this month.

“I want to thank my family at CSN for everything over the past 11 years and now I am looking forward to starting a new family at UNLV,” Chambers said. “I’m doing this to have a chance to go to Omaha (for the College World Series). I don’t know of many people who get the opportunity to coach at the high school, junior college and Division One levels all in the same town, so this can be something really special.”

Before moving to CSN, Chambers served as head coach at Las Vegas’ Bishop Gorman High School from 1991-99 where he won six consecutive Sunset Division championships (1992-97) and was the state runner-up in 1997. The NIAA High School Baseball Coach of the Year in 1993 and ’94 was also head coach of the American Legion Las Vegas Knights from 1991-99, winning numerous local, regional and national awards. The three-time state champions played in the 1998 American Legion World Series and finished the season ranked fifth in the nation.

After a college playing career that saw him named all-conference at three different schools, including earning All-America honors at Dixie College in 1984, Chambers earned his bachelor’s degree from Southern Utah University in 1989. He and his wife, Kimberlie, have two daughters, McKenzie (16) and Chase (3).
