DURHAM, N.C. — USA Baseball announced Thursday the naming of Jim Schlossnagle as manager of the 2013 Collegiate National Team. The TCU head coach will be making his managerial debut for Team USA. He previously wore the red, white and blue as pitching coach of the 2006 Collegiate team.

Schlossnagle joined the TCU coaching staff in 2003 and became just the program’s ninth coach since 1940. He has won more games (388) in nine years than any coach in TCU history after posting the top nine win totals each of the last nine years. He is 388-175 (.689) as the head coach at TCU and 465-222 (.677) in 11 years as a head coach.

“The 2006 Collegiate National Team, led by Vanderbilt’s Tim Corbin, is arguably one of the best teams ever fielded by USA Baseball,” said Eric Campbell, USA Baseball National Teams General Manager. “Along with the hitters, the pitching staff was historic. Jim Schlossnagle led a staff anchored by current Tampa Rays star David Price, and it’s a pleasure to announce that Jim will lead the 2013 Collegiate National Team as its field manager.”

In addition to Price, the Schlossnagle-led 2006 pitching staff also included several players that have since logged Major League experience, such as TCU’s own Jake Arrieta, Ross Detwiler, Sean Doolittle, and Tommy Hunter. The U.S. team went 28-2 in 2006, and it was led by a pitching staff which posted a 1.24 ERA, with 341 strikeouts against only 98 walks in 275 innings pitched.

“I am truly humbled and honored to have the privilege of leading the 2013 Collegiate National Team,” said Schlossnagle. “My experience as an assistant coach in 2006 was a life experience that I will never forget, so, to get the opportunity to wear the USA uniform again is something that I am very thankful for. I am so grateful to the USA staff and to TCU for allowing me to represent our country on the international stage. Although our complete focus right now is on our respective institutions, I know our Collegiate National Team staff will be prepared to compete at the highest level next summer.”

Schlossnagle is a seven-time Mountain West Coach of the Year and was named the NCBWA National Coach of the Year in 2010 after leading TCU to its first-ever berth in the NCAA College World Series. TCU has finished ranked in the top 20 each of the last four seasons, including a high ranking of No. 3 at the end of the 2010 campaign. In 20 years of coaching at the Division I level, he has made 17 appearances in the NCAA Regionals, four NCAA Super Regionals and two in the College World Series.

The 2013 Collegiate National Team schedule and the remainder of the coaching staff are currently being finalized, but plans are in place for Team USA to continue its international friendship series with both Japan and Cuba. An announcement will be made prior to the end of the year and details will be available on USABaseball.com. In 2012, the Collegiate team finished with an 12-5 record, and its season was highlighted by a rekindling of the Cuba series — Cuba hosted and took the series three games to two — and a bronze medal at Honkbal Week in the Netherlands.

“Between the U.S. and Japan Collegiate All-Star series and the return of the Cuba series, which was restarted in 2012 with a team led by Tennessee’s Dave Serrano and an incredible staff, Jim will have a unique opportunity to help build upon two strong relationships that we share within the international baseball community,” Campbell said.

DURHAM, N.C. — USA Baseball announced Tuesday the naming of Dave Serrano as manager of the 2012 Collegiate National Team. The new Tennessee Volunteer head coach will be making his managerial debut for Team USA.

Serrano was named the 24th head coach of the University Tennessee baseball program on June 15, on the heels of his fourth season at the helm of Cal State Fullerton. The former Titans skipper earned Big West Coach of the Year honors in 2011 for the second season in a row and led Fullerton to its 20th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

“We could not be more pleased with Dave Serrano accepting our invitation to serve as manager of the 2012 Collegiate National Team,” said Eric Campbell, general manager of USA Baseball National Teams. “The energy and passion he brought to the Collegiate program in 2010 was key to the success of that club, and we’re confident those qualities will carry over to the 2012 team as well.”

Serrano’s first experience in the red, white and blue came as pitching coach of the 2010 Collegiate team. He helped guide a staff headlined by several 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft first round picks, including Gerrit Cole (No. 1 overall, Pittsburgh Pirates), Sonny Gray (No. 18 overall, Oakland Athletics), Matt Barnes (No. 19 overall, Boston Red Sox), Tyler Anderson (No. 20 overall, Colorado Rockies), and Sean Gilmartin (No. 28 overall, Atlanta Braves). The 2010 club finished 16-3 overall, and Serrano’s staff compiled a 1.22 ERA for the summer.

“It is a tremendous honor to be given the opportunity to lead the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team,” said Serrano. “My experience on Bill Kinneberg’s staff in 2010 was nothing but first class, and I am both excited and humbled to have the chance to put on the USA Baseball uniform once again. I look forward to putting together a talented staff and representing this great country next year.”

Over 17 seasons at the Division I level, dating back to the start of his coaching career at Cerritos College in 1998 and including stints at Tennessee, UC Irvine and Fullerton, Serrano has secured 16 postseason bids and has tutored 161 draft picks. Seven of the picks were first-round selections and 23 ultimately reached the Major League level. Serrano has coached 19 players that have starred for USA Baseball National Teams, including Todd Helton and Christian Colon, and he is one of just 11 head coaches ever to lead two teams to the College World Series in Omaha (UC Irvine, 2007; Cal State Fullerton, 2009).

The 2012 Collegiate National Team schedule and the remainder of the coaching staff are currently being finalized. An announcement will be made prior to the end of the year and details will be available on www.USABaseball.com. In 2011, the Collegiate team finished with an 11-2-1 record, and its season was highlighted by a 3-1-1 series win over Japan in the two counties’ bi-annual collegiate all-star friendship series.

This year marks the 33rd consecutive year that the Golden Spikes Award has been presented to the nation’s premier amateur baseball player.

In partnership with Major League Baseball (MLB) and Major League Baseball Advanced Media, the interactive media and Internet company of MLB, the award was presented at MLB All-Star FanFest in Anaheim. In conjunction with the presentation, an award show highlighting the five finalists for the GSA was aired www.MLB.com.

2010 Golden Spikes Award winner Bryce Harper.

Chris Duffy (Central Florida), Yasmani Grandal (Miami [Fla.]), Drew Pomeranz (Mississippi) and Chris Sale (Florida Gulf Coast) were the other finalists for the award.

“This year’s five finalists for the Golden Spikes Award presented our voting committee with another difficult challenge,” said Paul Seiler, USA Baseball Executive Director/CEO.

“Each player authored an incredible season in 2010, and they are all deserving of the award. In the end, however, the committee determined that Bryce Harper’s incredible season with Southern Nevada stood above the rest. We at USA Baseball are honored to recognize Bryce’s achievements with the award for the top amateur baseball player in the country.”

The No. 1 overall selection by the Washington Nationals in the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft, Harper exceeded all expectations during his freshman season at Southern Nevada (CSN), belting 31 home runs (CSN single-season record), with 98 RBIs and a .443 average. The Las Vegas native was named 2010 Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) Player of the Year and First Team SWAC All-Conference.

The Coyotes backstop also received several accolades from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) including ABCA Division I Baseball Player of the Year, Division I Baseball First-Team All-American and Division I Rawlings Big Stick Award Winner.

The selection of Harper marks the second time in the history of the GSA that a junior college player won the award. Alex Fernandez (Miami Dade CC) took home the trophy in 1990. Harper and Fernandez are also the only two non-NCAA Division I players to ever win the award as well.

Harper becomes the second catcher in three years to win the GSA, joining 2008’s recipient, Buster Posey (Florida State). Jason Varitek (Georgia Tech, 1994) is the only other backstop to have won the GSA.

For the third year in a row, fans were able to stay up to date on the award by visiting www.GoldenSpikesAward.com. The Web site features content devoted exclusively to the GSA, including news, voting history, past-winner photo galleries, and photographs and video highlights for 2010 finalists.

Since 1978 USA Baseball has honored the top amateur baseball player in the country with the GSA. Following the first ever presentation of the trophy to Bob Horner of Arizona State, the GSA has been awarded each year to the player who exhibits exceptional athletic ability and exemplary sportsmanship.

The 2009 GSA winner was Stephen Strasburg of San Diego State. Past winners of the prestigious award include current Major League Baseball players such as Posey (’08), David Price (’07), Tim Lincecum (’06), Alex Gordon (’05), Jered Weaver (’04), Rickie Weeks (’03), Khalil Greene (’02), Jason Jennings (’00), Pat Burrell (’98), J.D. Drew (’97), Mark Kotsay (’95), and Jason Varitek (’94).
CARY, N.C. — USA Baseball announced Sunday night the 22 members of its 2010 Collegiate National Team. The roster is headlined by pitchers Gerrit Cole (UCLA), Sonny Gray (Vanderbilt) and infielder Brad Miller (Clemson), who were all members of the 2009 National Team.

This year’s squad consists of five infielders, four outfielders, two catchers, nine pitchers and a pair of two-way players. The Collegiate National Team was selected after seven days of trials that included six intra-squad games and practices as the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. Team USA is comprised of the top non-draft-eligible college players in the United States.

The U.S. will play a five-game series against Korea before squaring off against a Japanese Collegiate All-Star Team in a one-game, international friendship competition in Omaha’s Rosenblatt Stadium on July 21. From there, the team will travel to Taipei, Taiwan for a four-game series against Chinese Taipei at Tien-Mu Stadium beginning July 25.

Team USA will close its summer season at the FISU World University Championships in Tokyo, Japan, from July 30-Aug. 7. The U.S. has won the last three FISU Worlds (2004, ’06, ’08), while host nation Japan will be looking for its first title.

“We just wrapped up one of the best weeks of baseball in Cary, N.C.,” said Eric Campbell, General Manager of USA Baseball National Teams. “The players made it tough on the selection committee with their great effort over the last seven days. The selection committee assembled an impressive 22-man roster that will represent baseball and this country proudly.”

The trio of returnees (Cole, Gray and Miller) helped the 2009 Collegiate Team to a 19-5 overall record and the 2009 Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline World Baseball Challenge crown in Prince George, British Columbia (Canada). Cole and Gray combined to post a 7-1 record on the mound with 73 strikeouts, while Miller started 15 of 23 games, collecting 14 hits, scoring 13 runs and driving in eight.

Joining Cole and Gray on 11-member pitching staff are Tyler Anderson (Oregon), Matt Barnes (Connecticut), Brian Johnson (Florida), Scott McGough (Oregon), Brett Mooneyham (Stanford), Noe Ramirez (Cal State Fullerton), Kyle Winkler (Texas Christian).

Alongside Miller in the infield are Nolan Fontana (Florida), Drew Maggi (Arizona State), Ryan Wright (Louisville) and 2010 Baseball America Player of the Year and Dick Howser Trophy Winner Anthony Rendon (Rice).

The outfield consists of 2010 College World Series Most Outstanding Player Jackie Bradley, Jr. (South Carolina), Alex Dickerson (Indiana), Mikie Mahtook (LSU) and George Springer (Connecticut).

Peter O’Brien (Bethune-Cookman) and Steve Rodriguez (UCLA) will catch Team USA’s pitchers in 2010.

Rounding out the roster are two-way players Sean Gilmartin (Florida State) and Nick Ramirez (Cal State Fullerton).

“This was a great week of baseball,” said Manager Bill Kinneberg (Utah). “It was a tough decision to get the team down to 22 players, but I feel that we selected a special group of guys that will give us the best chance to win the FISU World University Baseball Championships.”

Joining Kinneberg are pitching coach Dave Serrano (Cal State Fullerton), and assistant coaches Ed Blankmeyer (St. John’s) and Nino Giarratano (San Francisco).

The Collegiate National Team begins its summer season Monday evening when they travel to Gastonia, N.C. to face the Gastonia Grizzlies of the Coastal Plain League. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. (EDT) at Sims Legion Park.

DURHAM, N.C. – USA Baseball released an updated 60-man Golden Spikes Award Watch List on Tuesday, bringing the organization one step closer to identifying the top amateur baseball player in the country. Sponsored by Major League Baseball, the 33rd annual Golden Spikes Award will be presented in 2010 on Tuesday, July 13, at the

On the heels of the 50-man preseason list released in February, the updated version includes 23 new athletes who have played themselves into consideration, while there are 13 names that have been removed. The watch list will continue to be a “rolling list” up until June 1 when 30 semifinalists are announced. This will ensure that athletes can still play themselves into consideration over the course of the month of May.

“As with all sports and end-of-season awards there are athletes who perform above and beyond expectations and thus play their way into the conversation,” said Paul Seiler, USA Baseball Executive Director/CEO. “It is our job to identify those players and make sure they are properly considered as we work toward crowning baseball’s top amateur talent in 2010.”

Texas leads all schools with five players named to the watch list. Florida State, Georgia Tech and Louisiana State are tied for second with three names each. Arkansas, Cal State Fullerton, Coastal Carolina, Texas A&M, UCLA, Virginia and Virginia Tech each have two.

The ACC tops all conferences with 13 watch list players. Other leaders include the SEC with 10 athletes, the Big 12 with eight, Conference USA with five and the Big West, Ohio Valley and Pac-10 with three each. Juniors dominate the list with 35 players named. Sophomores are next with 18 players, with seniors having six and Southern Nevada’s Bryce Harper representing the lone freshman.

UCF's Chris Duffy's 17 HR are tied for 6th in the nation.

On Tuesday, June 1, USA Baseball officials will cut the watch list of players to 30 names. The final list of 30 will then be sent to a voting body consisting of select professional baseball personnel, past USA Baseball National Team coaches, select members of the media, former USA Baseball sports information directors, and current USA Baseball staff — close to 150 voters in total.

Fan voting will once again be a part of the Golden Spikes Award in 2010. June 1 will also mark the day when college baseball fans from across the country will be able to vote for their favorite player for the Golden Spikes Award on www.GoldenSpikesAward.com. As part of this selection process all voters will be asked to choose five players from the list of 30 names. On Tuesday, June 8, USA Baseball will announce the five finalists, and voting will once again commence that same day.

The 2010 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award will be presented nationally July 13 on an award show via live telecast from Anaheim on GoldenSpikesAward.com, USABaseball.com and MLB.com in conjunction with All-Star FanFest.

USA Baseball announced Thursday its preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List, marking the organization’s first step toward identifying the top amateur baseball player in the country. Sponsored by Major League Baseball, the Golden Spikes Award will be presented in 2010 for the 33rd time.

The Watch List features 50 of the nation’s top amateur talents, and it will be a “rolling” list to ensure that athletes can play themselves into consideration for the Golden Spikes Award, to be presented live on Tuesday, July 13, at the 2010 Major League Baseball All-Star FanFest in Anaheim, Calif.

Headlining the 2010 Watch List are six athletes who were among the 30 semifinalists for the 2009 Golden Spikes Award. Those players are Daniel Bibona (LHP, Sr., UC Irvine), Bryce Brentz (OF/RHP, Jr., Middle Tennessee), Deck McGuire (RHP, Jr., Georgia Tech), Addison Reed (RHP, Jr., San Diego State), Anthony Rendon (3B, So., Rice) and Alex Wimmers (RHP, Jr., Ohio State).

“We’re very pleased to announce the 50 members of the preseason Watch List for the 2010 Golden Spikes Award,” said Paul Seiler, Executive Director/CEO of USA Baseball. “The level of amateur baseball talent in our country continues to rise each year, and there is no greater evidence of this than seeing six 2009 semifinalists named to the 2010 Watch List.”

The list of 50 names also features Bryce Harper of the College of Southern Nevada, a junior. The freshman catcher is the only junior-college player named to the list. Alex Fernandez, as a sophomore pitcher for Miami Dade Community College (now Miami Dade College) in 1990, stands as the only junior-college player to ever win the Golden Spikes Award.

LSU leads all schools with four players named to the Watch List. Texas is second with three, and Alabama, Arkansas, Cal State Fullerton, Coastal Carolina, Florida State, Georgia Tech, University of Miami, Rice and Virginia have two apiece.

The SEC tops all conferences with 15 Watch List players. Other leading conferences include the ACC with 10 athletes, the Big 12 with five, and the Big West and Conference USA with three each. Juniors dominate the list with 35 players named. Sophomores are next with nine players, there are five seniors, and Harper is the lone freshman.

On Tuesday, June 1, USA Baseball officials will cut the list of players to 30 names. The final list of 30 will then be sent to a voting body consisting of select professional baseball personnel, past USA Baseball National Team coaches, select members of the media, former USA Baseball sports information directors, and current USA Baseball staff — about 150 voters in total.

All voters will be asked to choose five players from the list of 30 names. Fan voting will once again be a part of the Golden Spikes Award in 2010. June 1 will also mark the day when college baseball fans from across the country will be able to vote for their favorite player for the Golden Spikes Award on goldenspikesaward.com. On Tuesday, June 8, USA Baseball will announce the five finalists, and voting for a winner will commence that same day.

The 2010 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award will be presented nationally July 13 on an award show via live telecast from Anaheim on goldenspikesaward.com, USABaseball.com and MLB.com in conjunction with All-Star FanFest.

Past winners of the Golden Spikes Award include Terry Francona (1980), Will Clark (1985), Robin Ventura (1988), Jason Varitek (1994), J.D. Drew (1997), Mark Prior (2001), Jered Weaver (2004), Tim Lincecum (2006), David Price (2007), Buster Posey (2008) and last year’s winner, Stephen Strasburg.

The 56-game slate features 32 home games, including the 25th annual South Alabama Classic.

USA head coach Steve Kittrell

“I think it’s a very competitive non-conference schedule, and it should prepare us for Sun Belt Conference play, which is getting better every year,” Kittrell said. “We’re excited about the challenges ahead and look forward to starting practice on Jan. 29.”

Kittrell’s club starts the season with 14 of its first 16 games at home. USA opens with a doubleheader against Jackson State (Feb. 19), then the Jags hit the road to take on Alabama the next day before returning home for a Sunday rematch with the Crimson Tide to round out the opening weekend.

Complete 2010 South Alabama Schedule

USA hosts the South Alabama Classic the following weekend. The tournament field includes another team with a great baseball history – Wichita State – along with North Florida and Eastern Michigan. Wichita State played in the 2002 Classic, while North Florida and Eastern Michigan will be visiting Stanky Field for the first time.

Following the tournament, the Jags take on a pair of storied programs in consecutive midweek games. USA travels to Mississippi State (March 2), then gets a visit from Tulane the following day. South Alabama’s last nonconference series is a four-game set with Siena (March 5-7).

After a pair of midweek games at home against Tennessee Tech, the Jags open Sun Belt Conference play with a three-game series at Arkansas-Little Rock. The Jags took two of three from the Trojans a season ago. The Jags follow that series with a pair of midweek games at Memphis, then return to Stanky Field for the conference home opener when they host longtime rival Louisiana-Lafayette (March 19-21).

After four more road games, including a series at Middle Tennessee, the Jags return for a five-game homestand when they host Southern Miss (March 30), New Orleans (April 2-4) and Southeastern Louisiana (April 6).

The Jags hit the road for Western Kentucky the following weekend (April 9-11), but not before making a stop along the way to take on Auburn (April 7). After the three-game set with the Hilltoppers, USA heads back home for games against Nicholls State (April 13) and Louisiana-Monroe (April 16-18). The Jags took both games of a rain-shortened two-game set against the Warhawks last year.

Kittrell’s squad then travels back to Arkansas, this time to take on Arkansas State (April 23-25), and on the way back the Jags stop for games with Nicholls State (April 27) and Southern Miss (April 28), before closing with seven of the last 10 at home.

USA rounds out the regular season hosting Florida Atlantic (May 7-9), Auburn (May 11) and Troy (May 20-22), and going on the road to face Florida International (May 14-16).

The Jags’ game against Auburn will be their fifth game of the season against an opponent from the Southeastern Conference. USA went a perfect 4-0 in home games against teams from the SEC in 2009, including a win over No. 6 Ole Miss that gave Kittrell his 1,000th career win, and a win against No. 21 Alabama in front of a Stanky Field record crowd of 4,436.

The Sun Belt Conference Championship is scheduled for May 26-29 in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
