Tokyo, Japan – Team USA scored a combined 10 runs in the third and fourth innings and cruised to an 11-0, seven inning quarterfinal win over China Tuesday afternoon at the V FISU World University Championships inside Yokohama Stadium. With the win, USA (15-2) advances to the semi-finals and will play the winner of Chinese Taipei/Japan on Thursday with a scheduled start time yet to be determined.

For the third time in four games Team USA’s pitching staff held an opponent to one run or less. Tyler Anderson (Oregon) picked up his first win of the summer after keeping China off the board in five innings of work. The left-hander scattered two hits during his outing and struck out six. Texas Christian’s Kyle Winkler was equally impressive striking out four of the seven batters he faced in two innings of relief.

Offensively USA registered eight hits and scored double-digit runs for the third time this season and second in the World University Championships. It was also the second time they run-ruled an opponent in the eight-team tournament (Sri Lanka, 15-0 in 5 inn. on July 30).

Ryan Wright (Louisville) put USA up 1-0 when he reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Drew Maggi (Arizona State) in the first frame. Maggi led off with a single then stole second and third with one out before crossing home on Wright’s dribbler to short that forced Jackie Bradley, Jr. (South Carolina) out at second base.

Bradley, Jr. highlighted USA’s three-run third by taking a 2-0 fastball to right field for his first round tripper of the summer. Brad Miller’s (Clemson) single through the right side scored Mikie Mahtook (LSU) from third before Bradley, Jr.’s two-run blast cleared the bases and gave USA a 4-0 lead.

USA sent 11 batters to the plate in its seven-run fourth, putting the game out of reach at 11-0. Mahtook sent a first pitch offering over the left field wall scoring Nick Ramirez (Cal State Fullerton) and Peter O’Brien (Bethune-Cookman) ahead of him. With two-men down in the frame, Miller singled, Bradley, Jr. walked and Wright followed with an RBI single making the score 8-0. George Springer (Connecticut) reached on a fielding error which plated Bradley, Jr. before Nick Ramirez and Jason Esposito (Vanderbilt) laced back-to-back RBI hits capping USA’s run total at 11.

Jun Zhang was saddled with the loss after allowing all 11 runs (eight earned) during his four-inning afternoon. The right-hander walked five and allowed eight hits before Zhen Yang closed out the final two hitless frames.

Notes: Jason Esposito extended his current hit streak to nine games with his single in the fourth … Ryan Wright, who owns a five-game hit streak, extended his team lead with his fourth multi-RBI contest … Brad Miller’s 2-for-3 performance at the plate increased his batting average to a team-best .441 (15-for-34) … Nine different players have hit at least one home run during Team USA’s summer tour … Tuesday’s shutout is the fifth on the season and it is the 11th time they have held an opponent to one or fewer runs this summer … Team USA’s pitching staff owns an impressive 1.19 ERA and has struck out 176 batters, while walking just 36 … Three members of the staff have not allowed a run and boast a 0.00 ERA, while five others have an ERA of 1.42 or better.

We are starting to receive releases from a few schools with players who are being invited to the 2010 USA Baseball team trials. We are told that schools are being allowed to individually announce their own invitees now, and then the full Team USA roster will be released by USA Baseball after all the invitations have been accepted.

This summer’s trials run from July 5-11 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. The final roster for Team USA will be announced in mid-July and the squad will compete in the V FISU World University Championships in Japan as well as friendship series against Korea in North Carolina at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary and at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham.

Here’s a look at some of the invitees we know of so far:

Matt Jensen-2B-Cal Poly

This is the second straight year Jensen has been invited to the Team USA Trials. After accepting the invitation a

year ago, Jensen fractured his collarbone in a Cal Poly game in early May and was unable to participate in the trials. Jensen (5-10, 190, Clovis, CA) sported a .375 batting average with 15 doubles, nine home runs and 53 RBI before fracturing his clavicle in May 2009. He suffered the injury when he was involved in a collision with a San Francisco baserunner. Jensen is the first Mustang baseball player to be invited to the National Team Trials.

Cal Poly head coach Larry Lee on Jensen: “Matt is one of the better ball players in the country.” “He should be able to follow up a tremendous freshman year with another quality season and is fully recovered from his broken collarbone.

“He’s really developed as a defensive second baseman to add to his already impressive credentials from an offensive standpoint,” Lee added. “Having the opportunity to represent the United States in this endeavor is a great honor and Matt is as good as it gets on and off the field. He will represent Cal Poly at the highest level this summer.”

Kyle Winkler-RHP-TCU

This is the second invite for Winkler as he participated in the 2009 trials last summer. Winkler completed a successful

freshman season, tying for the team lead with seven victories. In 17 appearances, he made 14 starts and posted a 7-1 record to go along with a 4.15 ERA. In 73 2/3 innings pitched, the righty tallied 48 strikeouts. He was named to the Mountain West Conference All-Tournament team and the Fort Worth All-Regional Team.

TCU head coach Jim Schlossnagle on Winkler: “This is a great honor for Kyle and our program,” Schlossnagle said. “Representing your country is one of the greatest honors one can receive in amateur baseball and Kyle was very close to making the team last year. I’m sure he will represent TCU at the highest level when the trials begin this summer.”

Nick Ramirez-P/1B & P-Tyler Pill-Cal State Fullerton

Ramirez

Both Pill and Ramirez are coming off seasons that earned them freshman All-American status in 2009 and come into the 2010 campaign as preseason All-Americans.

Pill (2009: 11-3, 4.06 ERA, 74 K, 13 BB) is likely to be the Titans’ Sunday starter on the mound again in 2010, and is the front-runner to be the starting right fielder when he is not pitching.

Also performing double duty in 2010 will be Ramirez (2009: .287, 10 HR, 31 RBI / 3-1, 2.61 ERA, 7 saves, 30 K, 10 BB) who will play first base and then serve as the Titans’ closer on the mound.

Pill

Cal State Fullerton head coach Dave Serrano will serve as Team USA’s pitching coach this summer. Utah’s Bill Kinneberg is the manager, while Nino Giarratano (San Francisco) and Ed Blankmeyer (St. John’s) round out the coaching staff.

Collegebaseball360.com will continue to follow 2010 Team USA Trials invitees as they are announced by their schools.
