CB360 Composite National Rankings #2 (2/22/18)

February 23, 2018
By

Oregon State (98.22, out of max. 100 pts) has slid ahead of preseason No. 1 Florida (97.52) to sit atop the current CB360 Composite National Rankings (CNR), which reflect games through Feb. 22 for some of the computerized metrics used in the exclusive 13-element formula (see more below about the CNR, including links to all the formula elements).

Florida and Oregon State sit 1–2, respectively, in the six “human polls” used in the CNR, but the Beavs hold the overall edge in the computerized factors to yield the narrow 0.7 edge atop the current CNR.

The four newcomers to the CB360 Top–50 include fellow AAC teams [40] East Carolina and [47] UConn, along with [48] Missouri and [49] Stetson. Georgia Tech (previously #42) has dropped out of the current CB360 Top–50, as have previously #44 Nebraska, [45] BYU and [48] California.

With Missouri rotating into the current Top–50, the Southeastern Conference now stands alone with 11 total teams in the CB360 Top–50 (all but Alabama, Georgia and tennessee). The Atlantic Coast Conference is down to nine Top–50 teams, with Georgia Tech sliding out.

The other current conference counts in the CB360 Top–50 include: 6 Big 12 … 4 Pac-12 (Cal dropped out) … 4 American Athletic Conf. (adding ECU and UConn) … 3 Sun Belt … 2 Big Ten (Nebraska out) …  2 Big West …. 2 Conference USA … 2 Missouri Valley … 1 each: Southland, Big East, Mountain West, West Coast (BYU dropped out) and Atlantic Sun (with addition of Stetson).

COMPOSITE NATIONAL RANKINGS (CNR) CRITERIA:  Teams receive points based on their standings in each poll/rating/projection (60 pts for #1; 59 for #2, etc.). For polls involving voting points (coaches and CB) and the various RPI-type ratings, the CNR adjusts to reward teams that have larger margins in the voting/point totals (whereas two teams with nearly the same voting-point total will be closer in the CNR allotment for that poll). Note that strength-of-schedule typically is factored into RPI formulations … thus the actual SOS numbers only are used early in the season (SOS are not used in the CNR when RPI already are in the mix). For the NCAA field projections, teams are awarded CNR points based on their respective seedings, “last in” and “last out,” etc.

The polls/ratings/projections are averaged, with 40 points typically then added to each total in order to yield the 100-point benchmark. Early in the season (projected SOS; and preseason conference coaches polls) and late in the season (final-10 games), a maximum bonus/penalty of 2.0 (SOS & conf. poll) or 0.5 points (final-10) is factored into the formula (in that case, 38.0, or 39.5, rather than 40, is added to the poll/rating/projection avg.).
