The third week of the season always produces plenty of shakeup within the CB360 Composite National Rankings (CNR) Top–50, and that trend certainly held true during this past week’s action.
(The full listing of the current Top–50 is included at the bottom of this page … also scroll down for assorted notes.)
As always, be sure to join CB360’s 25,000-plus Twitter followers for regular updates throughout the 2019 season, via @CB360updates.
Most of the national polls don’t shift many teams early in the season – in fact, the coaches poll does not even do an update to its preseason rankings until after the third weekend of play (that update was release earlier this week). That factor, along with numerous head-to-head matchups over the past seven days, adds to all sorts of movement within the CB360 Composite Top–50.

• ENTERING & Exiting – Five teams are making their 2019 debut in the CNR Top–50: [38] Indiana State … [41] New Mexico State … [42] Texas State … [44] UC Santa Barbara … and [45] Tulane – while [33] Miami and [49] Indiana have returned to the top-50, after a one-week hiatus. (Some details on these seven teams are included later in this release).
… And, conversely, there are the seven that now find themselves on the outside of the CNR Top–50: [34] Houston …[39] Minnesota … [43] San Diego State… [47] South Alabama … [48] Missouri State … [49] St. John’s … and [50] Stetson.

• Reshuffled TOP–10: The LSU Tigers (9–3) – after being swept at Texas (then #20 in the CNR) – tumbled out of the top spot, still remaining at the bottom of the top-10 (one spot behind the Longhorns, now 11–3). Once-beaten Oregon State (10–1) finds itself back in the familiar No. 1 position of the CNR, after opening the season at #2 and being #5 a week ago. This is an historic CNR trifecta for the Pac-12 Conference, as Stanford and UCLA (both 9–2) sit immediately behind their conference buddies from Corvallis. The Cardinal used a series win at Cal State Fullerton to move up from No. 7 in last week’s CNR, while the Bruins clicked up one position, despite losing the 2-1 series finale to Sacrament State).
Oregon State, with 97.19 points on the CNR 100-point scale, is the clear No. 1, while Stanford (92.11) is firmly in the second slot and UCLA (90.52) edged out once-beaten Mississippi State (12–1; 90.15) for third. Assuming the Beavers, Cardinal and Bruins remain healthy this season, there certainly will be speculation about the Pac-12 sending three teams to the College World Series for the first time since 1988 (and only the second time ever; see note below).
Mississippi State has jumped up five spots from No. 9, boosted by quality wins in Frisco over Sam Houston State (5-4) and then-#2 Texas Tech (4-3), plus a 4-1 win earlier this week vs. East Carolina. Texas Tech (8–3) has slipped back three spots to No. 5, after losing both of its games in Frisco, vs. Nebraska (1-1) and Mississippi State. North Carolina (12–1) held firm in the No. 6 spot following a fairly routine past few days, while Vanderbilt (11–2) has dropped from No. 3 to 7th, likely due to some of the delayed national poll movement.
Florida State (11–0) – one of four unbeaten teams remaining (see note below), out of 299 in Division I – has climbed from 12th to 8th, following a series sweep of Mercer and a midweek win over North Florida. The Seminoles’ CNR slot is slightly lower than expected, likely due to the fact that their first seven wins of the season were against teams that have yet to win a game (four vs. 0–10 Maine and three vs. 0–9 Youngstown State).
… The two teams that slipped outside of the CNR top–10 include Florida (from 10th to 11th) and Ole Miss (from 8th to 14th). The Gators swept their weekend series vs. Winthrop but their midweek struggles continued, splitting a pair vs. Florida Gulf Coast (2-7 loss). Florida has racked up an 8–1 record in its weekend series but now is only 2–4 in midweek games, with earlier losses vs. South Florida (1-6), North Florida (1-7) and Central Florida (9-12). The Gators only weekend loss was 2-5 in the series opener vs. Miami.
Ole Miss swept its weekend series vs. Long Beach State but lost earlier this week vs. East Carolina (2-3). One week earlier, the Rebels lost game-2 of their series at Tulane (12-13) and also split a tw0-game series vs. Horizon League favorite Wright State (5-9) during Opening Week.

• A Closer Look at the SEVEN NEWCOMERS – Here are summary details of the seven teams that have entered/returned to the CNR Top–50):
[33] Miami (10–2) – The Hurricanes, picked by the ACC coaches for a middle-of-the-pack finish in that competitive league, had entered the CNR at #39 two weeks ago, before dropping out of the top-50. Miami took care of business this past weekend by sweeping UMBC, followed by a midweek win over Appalachian State. The ‘Canes’ season highlight was a 5-2 win at Florida in that series opener, following an 11–4 win over a Florida Atlantic team that had been in the CNR preseason Top–50.
[38] Indiana State (9–1) – The Sycamores have yet to face a CNR Top–50 team this season, but they own a quality 1–0 win at UNC Wilmington, considered among the top contenders in the Colonial Athletic Association. Indiana State swept a pair of games this past weekend from Austin Peay (8-1 and 3-2), which of course stunned Vanderbilt earlier in the season.
[41] New Mexico State (11–2) – Known for their high-octane offense when playing at altitude in their home venue, NMSU is coming off a four-game sweep of visiting Delaware. The Aggies dropped one game (2-4) in an earlier series vs. Yale and later were shut out by Texas Tech, 7-0.
[42] Texas State (9–4) – The “artists formerly known as Southwest Texas State” had an impressive showing at the Shriner’s Classic in Minute Maid Park, nearly going 3–0 with wins over Rice (1-0) and Houston (9-4) before losing 4-5 to Baylor. The Bobcats opened the season at their own tournament, with a 0-4 loss to Nevada countered by a decisive 10-0 victory over Missouri State. Their other losses this season have come vs. Creighton (5-6; in Lake Charles, Fla.) and 5-12 vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
[44] UC Santa Barbara (8–2) – The Gauchos join Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine in giving the Big West Conference three teams among the current CNR Top–50. UCSB won both of its games vs. Pepperdine over the past weekend, with their lone losses coming in two-game splits vs. Loyola Marymount and UNLV.
[45] Tulane (10–3) – Led by third-year head coach and former Vanderbilt associate head coach Travis Jewett, the Green Wave have fashioned a solid start to the 2019 season … highlighted by a thrilling 13-12 victory over Ole Miss in game-2 of that recent series.
[49] Indiana (6–5) – The Hoosiers yo-yo season continued this past weekend in tournament action at Coastal Carolina, as the Hoosiers posted quality wins over Northeastern (6-4) and Connecticut (9-6) before a one-run loss to the host Chants (5-6). IU entered the season 37th in the preseason CNR but dropped a game in its series at Memphis and then was swept in a series at Tennessee (which still has yet to lose this season).

• MOVERS & SHAKERS – Eight teams have climbed seven or more spots within the CNR, including three of the nation’s remaining unbeatens (see next note for info. on those three teams) …
[32] Oklahoma (11–2) – The Sooners have climbed 14 spots, following a four-games series sweep of Columbia and a 2–7 loss earlier this week at Dallas Baptist (currently #41 in the CNR). OU’s only other loss this season came vs. another CB360 Top–50 regular, 6-8 vs. Cal State Fullerton (at the SDSU Tony Gwynn Classic). They do own a win over DBU, 4-2, from earlier this season, plus quality wins over the co-hosts of the Gwynn Classic: 6-1 vs. San Diego and 1-0 vs. San Diego State.
[19] South Carolina (10–3) – The Gamecocks made a 10-spot jump in the CNR, after their huge win of the annual Palmetto state rivalry series vs. Clemson: 5-4 (at Clemson), 5-11 (in Greenville and 14-3 (at home). The Gamecoks only other losses this season have come in the opener vs. Liberty (5-6) and earlier this week, in a 10-2 upset posted by visiting Gardner-Webb.
[28] Washington (8–2) – The Huksies also made a 10-spot move up the CNR, after sweeping their series vs. Cal Poly and winning earlier this week at Seattle. Washington’s top win so far in 2019 came in the 9-5 opener at UC Irvine, which then beat the Huskies in a pair of close games (2-1; 6-5).
[31] Oregon (7–3) – After debuting in the Top–50 a week ago at #40, the Ducks are moving towards the Top–25. Oregon swept a series at Loyola Marymount over the weekend, before a 3-5 loss earlier this week at Portland. The Ducks impressive opened the season with a 9-4 win at Texas Tech and battled hard in the next two games, losing 11-12 and 4-6. Oregon also owns a series over Saint Mary’s, considered one of the top contenders in the West Coast Conference this season (SMC spent a week in the CNR Top–50 earlier this season).
[29] UC Irvine (7–3; #36 last week) – Speaking of UC Irvine, in addition to the season-opening series win over Washington, the Anteaters also own a two-game series win over Missouri State last weekend (3-2; 4-1). Their other losses have come on the road, at San Diego State (3-9) and LMU (3-7).

• And Then There Were Four (UNBEATENS) – In addition to current No. 8 Florida State (11–0), there are three other unbeatens remaining among 299 Division I teams: [13] North Carolina State (12–0) … [16] Tennessee (13–0) … and [17] Arizona State (12–0). NC State, which climbed from 21st to 13th in the CNR, is coming off a series sweep at Minnesota (3-2, 8-4, 5-4) and then a crazy midweek game in Durham, at North Carolin Central (11-10). The Pack also own wins over three conference favorites: 5-0 at Elon (CAA), 3-2 vs. Kent State (MAC) and 10-1 at Campbell (Big South).
Tennessee entered the CNR last week (#45) and has skyrocketed all the way to 19th. The Vols’ top results this season have been a series sweep of Indiana (5-1, 11-0 & 5-3). This past weekend, Tennessee swept its tournament games in Pensacola, Fla. (vs. Louisiana-Monroe, North Florida & Western Kentucky) before winning earlier this week vs. Troy, 11-2 in Hoover, Ala.
Arizona State, which climbed from 31st to 17th in the CNR, is coming off a series sweep of Michigan State. ASU’s biggest win of the season came earlier this week, 6-4 at Cal State Fullerton.
Here’s a comparison of each unbeaten team, based on their early-season resume:
13–0 … Tennessee #4 RPI and #60 strength of schedule
12–0 … Arizona St (8 RPI and 91 sos)
12–0 … NC State (14 RPI and 133 sos)
11–0 … Florida St (80 RPI and 247 sos)
(RPI and sos per Warren Nolan)

• More on the Current Top–10 – Oregon State suffered its first loss over the weekend in the series finale vs. West Virginia (0-2). The Beavs most noteworthy wins so far came in the season-opening tournament in Surprise, Ariz.: 13-1 vs. Minnesota and 9-3 vs. WCC favorite Gonzaga. … Stanford swept its doubleheader at CB360 then-#19 Cal State Fullerton (4-3; 8-1) before losing a close series finale, 5-6. The Cardinal’s only other loss so far was in the series opener vs. UNLV, a 2-1 pitchers duel.
UCLA opened the season with an impressive sweep of St. John’s (3-2, 9-0 & 11-1) and added a quality series win vs. another CB360 Top–50 team, Georgia Tech (3-4, 8-2 & 6-0). Sacramento state edged the Bruins this past weekend, in the 2-1 series finale. … Mississippi State had a big week-2 rivalry series vs. Southern Miss., winning two of the three games (0-1, 8-1 & 4-3). They added two more quality wins in Frisco, Texas, vs. Sam Houston State (5-4) and Texas Tech (4-1), followed by wins earlier this week vs. East Carolina (4-1) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (14-1).
Texas Tech – after the season-opening series win vs. Oregon – followed with several other notable wins: a series sweep of Kentucky and a 7-0 victory over New Mexico State. The Raiders suffered losses in Frisco vs. Nebraska (1-2) and Mississippi State (2-4), before bouncing back earlier this week with a pair of wins at San Diego State (5-1 & 12-9). … North Carolina is coming off a series sweep of Louisiana-Monroe, followed by a win over Charleston Southern. UNC owns a 4-3 win over UNC Wilmington (considered one of the top contenders for the CAA title), with their lone loss coming 8-11 vs. a VCU team expected to challenge for the Atlantic 10 title.
Vanderbilt swept its weekend series vs. Dayton before avoiding the midweek pitfalls encountered by many of the nation’s top teams, routing Davidson (24-2) and East Tennessee State (12-4). Vandy’s first loss of the season came in Scottsdale, 2-10 vs. TCU (after a big 14-9) win over Cal State Fullerton). The Commodores also dropped a 7-8 home game vs. Austin Peay. … Texas opened the season by winning 2-of-3 games at Louisiana (Lafayette), with their other losses coming in game-2 vs. Purdue (0-4) and in a 7-10 midweek games vs. UTSA. In addition to the wins over LSU (8-1. 8-4 & 7-6), the Longhorns also own a quality win vs. Sam Houston State (10-3).

• An Historic Pac-12 Trio? – With Oregon State, Stanford & UCLA holding down the 1–2–3 spots in the current CB360 Composite National Rankings, could this be first year since 1988 with three Pac-12 teams in the College World Series? (that also happened in 1976). It should be noted that, for many years, the inherent NCAA Tournament structure likely precluded most conferences from featuring more than two CWS teams in any given season, because the earlier NCAA rounds were geographically based for many years.
> Here are the two historic seasons when three teams from the conference advanced to the CWS:
1976 – Arizona 5-1 (1st) … Arizona State 3-2 (semifinals) … Washington State 1-2
1988 – Stanford 5-1 (1st) … Arizona State 4-2 (2nd) … California 0-2
Over the past 65 yrs, there have been 31 CWS with multiple Pac-12 teams: 1954 Arizona/Oregon … 1955 Ariz./USC … ’56 Arizona/Washington St … ’58+’60+’63 USC/Ariz. … ’64 USC/Arizona St … ’65 ASU/WSU … ’66 USC/Ariz. … ’67 ASU/Stanford … ’69 ASU/UCLA … ‘ 70 USC/Ariz. … ’72+’73 USC/ASU … ’76 Ariz./ASU/WSU … ’78 USC/ASU .. ’80 Ariz./Cal … ’83 ASU/Stanford … ’85 Stanford/Ariz. … ’87 Stanford/ASU … ’88 Stanford/ASU/Cal … ’95 USC/Stanford … ’97 Stanford/UCLA … ’98 USC/ASU … 2000 Stanford/USC … ’01 Stanford/USC … ’05 ASU/Oregon St … ’07 ASU/Oregon St … ’10 ASU/UCLA … ’12 UCLA/Ariz. … ’13 UCLA/Oregon St.
