With the Big Ten on the verge of its delayed start to the 2021 season, most of the Top-50 teams in the CB360 Composite National Rankings (all but #39 West Virginia) are scheduled to be in action during the first weekend of March – including 19 that will be facing fellow Top-50 opponents at some point over the next few days. Several Top-50 teams did a good job of quickly setting up replacement series, after their initial opponents had to take a Covid pause (see below).

… Here are the CB360 Weekend Scoreboard pages for the opening two weeks of the 2021 season:
• Feb. 19–21: bit.ly/3k3n6Vd
• Feb. 26–28: bit.ly/3kup4xV
Multiple CB360 Top-50 teams will be featured at two different notable tournaments, both in the Lone Star State. The Frisco College Baseball Classic (FriscoClassic.com), a four-day tournament being held at Dr. Pepper Ballpark (home of the Texas Rangers double-A affiliate, the Frisco Roughriders), includes a four-team field of: [24] Arizona, [31] Dallas Baptist, [47] Oklahoma and Missouri. In Thursday’s opening games, Arizona won a high-scoring battle vs. Oklahoma, 20–13, while Dallas Baptist edged Mizzou, 3–2.
Roughly 250 miles southeast of Frisco, at big-league Minute Maid Park in Houston, six Texas teams will be competing at the annual Shiners Hospitals for College Classic: [10] TCU, [11] Texas Tech and Texas State (#46 in the CB360 preseason Composite Top-50), along with Rice, Sam Houston State (Southland Conf. favorite) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Big 12 rivals (TCU & Texas Tech) will not be facing each other this weekend and also will not be playing Rice at the Shriners Classic.
For the first time in the 13-year history of the CB360 Composite National Rankings (CNR), all 14 of the Atlantic Coast Conference teams are in the CNR Top-50. Twelve of those teams will be playing in head-to-head series this weekend (all but #28 Boston College and #44 Wake Forest, due to WFU’s Covid pause):
• [8] Louisville at [15] Georgia Tech
• [19] North Carolina at [18] Virginia Tech
• [6] Miami at [32] North Carolina State
• [33] Pittsburgh at [36] Duke
• [17] Virginia at [45] Florida State
• [49] Notre Dame at [37] Clemson
Boston College still will be facing a fellow CB360 Top-50 team, in a quickly added series at [21] Auburn (the Tigers’ initial March 4–6 series vs. Xavier was canceled). This week’s other top non-conference series within the CB360 Top-50 has [26] Texas playing at [41] Houston.
Three other CB360 Top-50 teams are playing home series vs. conference favorites that currently sit outside the Top-50: [3] Ole Miss vs. Belmont (Ohio Valley Conf.) … [4] Mississippi State vs. Kent State (Mid-American Conf.) … and [35] UCF vs. Liberty (Atlantic Sun).
UCLA (cb360 #13) is hosting a four-team tournament that includes a couple teams (Pepperdine and USC) that have fallen out of the CB360 Top-50, along with Cal State Fullerton. Coastal Carolina (cb360 #40) is in the midst of its usual early-season schedule, playing 15 of its first 16 at home. The Chants are hosting the annual Baseball at the Beach tournament, with games vs. Davidson, Miami (Ohio) and Connecticut (the Huskies recently fell out of the CB360 Top-50).
Five Top-50 teams got their weekends started early on Thursday: the three in Frisco, plus [20] Oregon State (at home for Thur.-Sat. series vs. BYU) and [43] Sacramento State, which suffered a 5–0 loss at Santa Clara in the opener of their four-game, Thur.–Sun. series.
The Big Ten Conference teams all have waited two weeks to finally start their 2021 seasons. Michigan (cb360 #29) actually is starting in Round Rock, Texas, vs. fellow Big Ten team Iowa (single game on Saturday and a Sunday doubleheader) – while [48] Indiana‘s unique opening week will play out at a big-league park (U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis). The Hoosiers are set for a Friday doubleheader vs. Big Ten foes Rutgers and Minnesota, followed by additional single games vs. each of those opponents over the weekend.
The only CB360 Top-50 team not scheduled to play this weekend is [39] West Virginia, due to their Covid pause. WVU initially was going to host Kent State, which managed to secure this weekend’s series at Mississippi State (after Tennessee Tech also paused).
>> Thursday Highlights (March 4) – [24] Arizona rapped out 19 hits en route to outscoring [47] Oklahoma, 20–13, in the opening game of the Frisco Classic. The Sooners led 9–3 thru three innings, but a couple runs in the 6th and six in the 7th later pushed Arizona to a 19–11 cushion. Wildcats leaders included: RF/cleanup batter Blake Paugh (4-for-6; 3 RBI–2R–3B–2 2B) … 2B/7-hole hitter Kobe Kato (3–4; 3 RBI–5R–2 2B–BB) … and LF/9-hole hitter Mac Bingham (3 RBI–HR–1B–2 BB).
Also on Thursday, Santa Clara had an impressive start to its four-game series vs. visiting [43] Sacramento State, winning 5–0 behind the pitching of sr. LHP Russell Grant (no-decision; 4.0 IP–2H–8K) and so. RHP Cole Kitchen (now 2–0; 5.0 IP–H–3 BB–HB–7K). The Broncos got all the offense they needed, from the likes of CF/leadoff batter Coleman Brigman (2-for-4; RBI–R–BB) and catcher/3-hole hitter Jake MacNichols (solo HR). SCU opened the 2021 season with an impressive 8–4 win over current CB360 #9 UC Santa Barabara and also had a win over Stanford in a week-2 series. Sac State, a co-favorite in the Western Athletic Conference, has beaten Arizona State (current CB360 #27) this season and swept three from Texas State, a preseason top-50 team in CB360 Composite Rankings.
