11 More Top-50 Upsets …
Virginia Tech posted an extra-inning win over Georgia Tech, as part of Friday’s 11 upsets suffered by top-50 teams in the CB360 Composite National Rankings. It was a hectic night in the Atlantic Coast Conference, with the #30 Hokies winning 3-1 in 11 innings (in the “Tech-sector” battle) while North Carolina (#42 in the CNR) won 5-3 at #19 Clemson and Boston College upset #49 North Carolina State (9-5, in Raleigh).
The Pac-10 produced a pair of upsets in the CB360 top-50, as #29 Stanford edged visiting Bay-area rival #18 California (3-2) while Washington State beat slumping Oregon State (#24), 5-1 in Pullman. Friday’s other six top-50 upsets were as follows: at #37 Texas A&M 6, #21 Oklahoma 1 … Florida International 7, at #25 Western Kentucky 6 (10 inn.) … at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 10, #31 Southeastern Louisiana 5 … and three games in the wide-open Southern Conference (Davidson 5, at #33 The Citadel 2 … Elon 14, at #39 College of Charleston 3 …at Georgia Southern 11, #46 Western Carolina 4.
There also were 11 series involving head-to-head showdowns between teams in the CB360 top-50. In addition to the big head-to-head wins by Virginia Tech and UNC, the ACC’s results on Friday included #11 Miami’s 6-5 win at #13 Florida State. The Southeastern Conference similarly featured three top-50 showdowns, a #4 Arkansas pushed its win streak to 14 games (8-3 at #9 Florida) while #28 Auburn defeated #34 Kentucky (13-6). Friday’s much-anticipated series opener between #7 LSU and homestanding Mississippi (#22) – featuring an elite pitchers duel between LSU’s Anthony Ranaudo and Ole Miss lefthande Drew Pomeranz –was rained out (those teams will play today on Saturday).
In other top-50 showdowns on Friday (which included the aforementioned wins by A&M and Stanford): #6 UCLA 6, at #16 Arizona 3 (10 inn.) … at #23 Connecticut 7, #43 Rutgers 2 (19th straight wins for the Huskies) … at #41 Kansas 10, #48 Texas Tech 2.
Friday’s schedule had all of the CB360 top-50 teams in action (five were postponed/suspended), spanning 40 games (#3 Virginia won a doubleheader at Maryland, in advance of impending weekend weather).
