The final week of the regular season (for most leagues) began in volatile fashion on Thursday, as 10 of the 27 games involving top-50 teams from the CB360 Composite National Rankings resulted in upsets. Most notably: #2 Virginia lost in 11 innings at #13 Miami (3-2) and #10 Florida State lost by a similar 1-run score at #24 Clemson (9-8), as did #14 Arkansas at #15 Vanderbilt (4-3). The Virginia loss – coupled with Georgia’s Tech’s win over Boston College – sets up an exciting finish in the Atlantic Coast Conference (UVa leads at 21-7, one game ahead of both Miami and GT …. but the Cavs hold the head-to-head tiebreaker vs. both teams). Several conferences – namely the SEC, ACC, BIG EAST, SoCon, Southland & Sunbelt – had bumped up the start of their weekend series, with tournament play set to begin early next week. There were seven head-to-head showdowns on Thursday between CB360 top-50 teams, the three mentioned above along with: #4 Florida 4, at #9 South Carolina 3 (inching the Gators ahead of the Gamecocks atop the SEC standings) … #16 Auburn 5, at #17 Mississippi 3 … at #40 North Carolina 13, #21 Virginia Tech 6 … and #33 Alabama 11, at #48 Tennessee 3.
Thursday’s other upsets involving CB360 top-50 teams included: at UNC Wilmington 3, #27 College of Charleston 2 … Northwestern (La.) State 8, at #34 Southeastern Louisiana 5 … at Utah 5, #36 New Mexico 2 … Florida International 12, at #37 Florida Atlantic 4 … at Georgia 8, #38 Kentucky 6 … and Samford 11, at #45 Elon 10 (in 10). Each of those results could impact the NCAA at-large hopes for those teams (and for others currently considered “on the bubble”).
