Wittels, FIU To Start 2011 Season In Primetime

Garrett Wittels ended the 2010 college baseball season in pursuit of history, and he will open the 2011 season in primetime.

The Florida International University outfielder hit safely in 56 consecutive games in 2010. He need hits in FIU’s first two games of 2011 to tie Robin Ventura’s 24-year-old Divsion One record and the ESPN family of stations will be there to televise the historic pursuit when the Golden Panthers open the season at home against Southeastern Louisiana.

The season opens Friday, February 18 with a 7 p.m. first pitch. Saturday’s game starts at 1 p.m. Both of those games will be available on ESPN3. Sunday’s potentially historic game will be televised by ESPNU at 7:30 p.m.

Of the season-opening event, FIU head coach Turtle Thomas says “Garrett Wittels has a hallowed offensive record withing reach and with Southeastern Louisiana being in the Top 25 for a few weeks last year and beating some good teams, fans can expect to see a great weekend of baseball.”

FIU won the Sun Belt Conference Championship last year to earn the program’s first NCAA Regional berth in eight years.
