Virginia's Danny Hultzen

Oregon State's Ryan Dunn

Dunn is the Primetime Player of the Week and Hultzen the Primetime Pitcher for the week of April 4-10, as selected by CollegeBaseball360.com. Eight other players round out the week-8 Primetime Performers Weekly Honor Roll (listed below).

DUNN delivered consistent and clutch play in the field and while batting from the bottom of the lineup, as the Beavers (cb360 E19) posted an 11-1 midweek win over Portland and then became the first Pac-10 team since 1999 to sweep Arizona State (cb360 #5; 5-3, 7-6, 9-6).  He hit 6-for-14 during the week while factoring into 10 of his team’s runs (6 RBI, 5 R, HR), with 12 total bases (HR, 3 2B).

Oregon State' Ryan Dunn played a key role from the bottom of the batting order, as the Beavers became the first team since 1999 to sweep a Pac-10 series from Arizona State.

Twice during the ASU series, Dunn put the Beavers up for good with timely doubles. His 2-out/2-run double pushed Oregon State to 7th-inning, 3-2 lead in the tense opener (the clutch hit sparked a 4-run bottom of the 7th for the home team). He added two hits, an RBI and run scored in the series-clinching second game – followed by a 2nd-inning home run and another 2-run double (in the 3rd) to transform a 5-4 deficit into a 6-5 lead in the series finale.

The 5-foot-10, 175-pounder is hitting .292 for the season, with 14 RBI.

HULTZEN added to his masterful season and career by winning the opener at Georgia Tech (cb360 #9), outdueling fellow top pitcher Mark Pope in the 6-2 opener. The 6-3, 200-pound lefthander allowed only one earned run (one unearned) while taking his strong outing into the 9th. He racked up 12 strikeouts while yielding a single walk and scattering seven hits in the pressure-packed showdown – versus a high-powered offense that boasted a .331 team batting average.

Virginia's Danny Hultzen struck out 10 and held Georgia Tech to one earned run, while working into the 9th inning of that marquee series opener.

Hultzen now shares the Virginia record for career wis (27) and owns 13 career games with double-digit strikeouts (the Cavaliers have won each of those games). His other career stats include 320 strikeouts (a UVa record and 15th in ACC history). His 90 Ks this season are 25 more than any other pitcher in the conference, with his other season stats including a 1.33 ERA, a lowly .181 opp. batting avg. and an eye-popping 9.0 k-to-walk ratio (90/10; 14.9 Ks per 9 IP).

The week-8 Primetime Performers feature two shortstops, a pair of first basemen, and two lefthanded pitchers, plus a catcher, third baseman, outfielder and RHP. The 10 honorees include six juniors, two sophomores, a senior and freshman – with three of them hailing from California hometowns, plus one each from the following home states: Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Oregon.

Primetime Performer Award Criteria (not based solely on raw stats, but rather …)

• Must have been playing for or against a CB360 top-50 team (in the Composite National Rankings) or performed a high level in games that could be key to a team’s conference/NCAA postseason qualification; made significant contribution to team’s postseason positioning (single-game wins, “quality” wins, series wins, road wins, etc.).
• Involved in clutch performances, such as late game-winning hits, noteworthy comebacks, game-changing plays, team leadership, key defensive efforts, etc.
• Performed at a top level against a team rated highly nationally (or within its conference), with bonus consideration given for key performances away from home field and vs. traditional rivals.
• Overcame adversity or extreme circumstances (for the team and/or individual).
• Any accomplishment that is rare, historic, record-setting, etc., on a national level.
