Friday College Baseball Top-50 Scoreboard/Wrapup (4/15/11)

April 15, 2011
By

There weren’t many upsets (8-of-38; or 21%) in Friday’s games involving CB360 top-50 teams … but there still were some very noteworthy results, including South Carolina (cb350 #4) edging #3 Vanderbilt, 3-1, while #21 Oklahoma State opened its Bedlam Series vs. #15 Oklahoma in dramatic fashion – winning 8-7 on a Dane Phillips 1st-pitch home run that led off the bottom of the 9th (at Tulsa’s OneOK Field).  front-page photo courtesy of Central Michigan

Oklahoma State's Dane Phillips

Four of the head-to-head matchups between CB360 top-50 teams saw the lower-ranked teams emerge victorious: the clutch wins by South Carolina and Oklahoma State, plus #35 Auburn 8-7 at #27 LSU and #46 Southeastern Louisiana 8-5 at #37 Texas State (in a key Southland Conference battle). Friday’s eight total top-50 upsets also included: North Carolina State edging #5 North Carolina, 5-4 … Virginia Tech winning a similar tight game in the ACC, 2-1 vs. #9 Florida StateCentral Michigan knocking off Mid-American Conference leader Kent State, also 2-1 (overcoming another strong outing from Flashes ace Andrew Chafin)  … and St. John’s winning a BIG EAST battle vs. #36 Louisville, 8-2.

Oregon State's Sam Gaviglio went the distance in the 1-0 win at Stanford.

Other results of note in head-to-head battles within the CB360 top-50 included: #13 Oregon State posting another big Pac-10 road win  (1-0, at #16 Stanford) … #22 Arizona winning at Pac-10 leader UCLA (cb360 #25) … and East Carolina picking up a key Conference USA series-opening win over #40 Central Florida (12-6).

In addition to the 10 head-to-head battles, there were 10 other matchups between current CB360 top-50 squads and teams that were top-50 earlier this season. Those games included the wins by North Carolina State, Virginia Tech and St. John’s, along with (keep an eye on these series for potential upsets during the weekend): #39 Gonzaga at Loyola Marymount … College of Charleston at #48 Elon … Duke at #1 Virginia … Texas Tech at #6 Texas … Tulane at #24 Rice … Tennessee at #30 Alabama … and Washington State at #8 Arizona State.

This expanded CB360 gameday page includes in-depth preview/gave-coverage info. for several of the weekend’s top series (now archived at bottom of this page).
