Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Poll – April 9

TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Kentucky (30-3) has been ranked No. 1 in the latest NCAA Division I baseball poll by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

It marks the second straight week the Wildcats have been on top of the poll. Over the past weekend, Kentucky beat Mississippi two of three and is No. 1 in the Southeastern Conference with a 9-3 record. The Wildcats have been paced by an attack that leads the SEC in nearly every offensive category. Kentucky is hitting .328 with a .506 slugging mark and .421 on-base percentage, belting 40 homers over 33 games. The 30-3 overall record is the best start to a season in school history, leading NCAA Division I schools in wins.

Poll Notes: Key top 30 series took place last week. Louisiana St. took two of three at Florida, Oregon won two of three at UCLA, Miami swept a 3-game series at home against North Carolina, Arizona State swept three from Oregon St. and Cal Poly swept three from U.C. Irvine. Several teams have been hot lately. Baylor has won 14 in a row and leads the Big 12 Conference with a 12-0 record. Sam Houston State has won 12 straight and leads the Southland Conference with a 13-2 record while Purdue has won 7 of its last 8 and leads the Big Ten Conference with a 7-2 mark. Four teams fell out of the top 30 in Oregon St. (1-3 last week), Auburn (0-3), Coastal Carolina (2-2) and U.C. Irvine (0-3). New to the poll this week is Arizona State, Cal Poly, Virginia and Appalachian St.

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
