Pro Baseball Signee Prepares For Football Season…

He just signed a professional baseball contract with the Colorado Rockies, but Clemson’s Kyle Parker still as football to play this fall.  Parker helped the Clemson baseball team reach the College World Series this past year after helping the Tigers to a Music City Bowl win as the football team’s quarterback.  He is the first player in Division One history to throw 20 touchdown passes and hit 20 home runs in the same academic year.

Parker begins his second season as Clemson’s quarterback in 2010.  He will report to spring training next year.  In this exclusive interview with College Baseball 360’s Sean Stires Parker talks about his decision to sign with the Rockies, his CWS and Bowl experiences, whether or not he’ll play football again next year and more.

Former Boston College head coach Mik Aoki has been on the job for more than a week as Notre Dame’s new baseball coach.  Aoki has been back and forth between South Bend, IN and Boston as he prepares to move his family (his wife and three young children) to their new home.  He has also been on the phone making contact with current Irish players – who are busy with summer ball – while also keeping track of current ND recruits.  In this interview with Collegebaseballl360.com Editor Sean Stires he discusses those things as well as his transition, his new facilities, recruiting concepts and more.

Florida 9-hole batter Tyler Thompson had a career day in last week’s Regional championship game.  Thompson smacked three home runs with 6 RBIs to help the Gators beat Florida Atlantic 15-0 to advance to the Super Regionals for a second straight year.  He went into the day with just two HRs all season.  In this interview with Collegebaseball360.com editor Sean Stires, Thompson talks about his home run barrage, last year’s Super Regional disappointment vs. Southern Mississippi and facing Miami this year for the right to go to Omaha.

Lefty Helps Vandy To Regional Win

Have you ever seen John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success?  At the top of the pyramid it says “Competitive Greatness: Be at your best when your best is needed.  Enjoyment of a difficult challenge.“  That pretty much sums-up Vanderbilt pitcher Richie Goodenow’s performance vs. #7 national seed Louisville in last week’s Regional.  With the Commodores facing elimination on Sunday the junior made just his 2nd career start in what was his 68th career appearances.  The result was a complete game two-hitter that sent Vandy to a winner take all Regional title game that they won 3-2 in 10 innings the next day.  In this podcast interview with Collegebaseball360.com editor Sean Stires Goodenow talks about his gem as well as his team’s Super Regional match-up with Florida State.

Rico Noel Podcast Interview

Big Week For Coastal Carolina Star

Coastal Carolina outfielder Rico Noel has helped the Chanticleers to a big season, and this week has been the biggest.  Noel hit a walk-off home run Sunday night to force a Monday winner take all Regional championship game in which his team beat the College of Charleston.  He was named the Myrtle Beach Regional MVP for his efforts.  As if that wasn’t enough, Noel was taken Tuesday by the San Diego Padres in the fifth round of the MLB draft.  He talks about all of that as well as this week’s Super Regional series vs. South Carolina in this podcast interview with Collegebaseball360.com editor Sean Stires.

TCU Catcher Bryan Holaday and his teammates are preparing for a second straight Super Regional meeting with Texas.  Last year the Horned Frogs advanced to the program’s first ever Super Regional, but fell short of their goal of Omaha when they lost two of three games to the eventual national runner-up.  In this interview Holaday talks about last year’s experience and how he thinks it will help them get to college baseball’s ultimate destination this year.

New Mexico OF Among Nation’s Top Hitters

New Mexico finds itself in a place this week that it hasn’t been since before Neil Armstrong stepped foot on the moon: In the NCAA Baseball Tournament.  The Lobos are in the tourney for the first time in 48 years, and a big reason why (aside from the “Kick The Door Down” mentality of head coach Ray Birmingham) is Justin Howard.  The senior carries a .455 average into this weekend’s Fullerton, CA Regional with a team-high 72 RBIs and a 1.217 OPS.  CB360 Editor Sean Stires talked to Howard just after he and his teammates arrived in Los Angeles Wednesday night.

FIU Soph. Takes 54-Game Hit Streak Into NCAA Tourney

Florida International’s Garrett Wittels in on the verge of college baseball history.  The sophomore infielder helped his team to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament title last week, and in the process he extended his current hitting streak to 54 games.  He is just four away from tying former Oklahoma State and MLB star Robin Ventura’s NCAA record 58 game streak as he prepares for this weekend’s NCAA Tournament.  On Wednesday (6/2/10) Wittels and FIU head coach Turtle Thomas fielded questions from reporters from around the nation in a conference call.  Click play to listen to some of the highlights.

Interview With A-10 Tourney MVP

St. Louis claimed the Atlantic 10 Tournament title as the number five seed.  The Billikens did it by beating top-seeded Charlotte twice, and Bryant Cotton had a hand in both wins.  Bryant fired a complete game in a 3-2 win over the 49ers to improve to 9-4 last Thursday, then he made his first relief appearance of the season two days later and struckout the only batter he faced to end the A-10 Championship game & earn the first save of his career (as well as A-10 Tournament MVP honors).  Bryant and the Billikens are now headed to Louisville along with Vanderbilt and Illinois State for NCAA Regional action.
