Max Willett led the high-powered New Mexico offense by batting .636 (7-11) with a triple and two doubles in two wins over then #1 Texas in Austin on opening weekend. The center fielder had the game-winning RBI in the top of the 9th inning to give the Lobos a 6-5 win over the consensus #1 ranked team in the country heading into the 2010 season. It was New Mexico’s first-ever win over a top-ranked team, and the Lobos followed that with a 3-1 series clinching win the following day.

Comments On OVC Tourney Moving To Pringles Park
After nine years at Padacah, Kentucky’s Brooks Stadium the Ohio Valley Conference is moving its postseason tournament to Pringles Park in Jackson, TN this year. Pringles Park is the home of the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx, the Double-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. The OVC Tournament runs May 26-30.

The junior outfielder went from a .303 hitter with 3 home runs with a .780 OPS as a freshman to a .344 average with 12 HR, 62 RBIs and a 1.052 OPS as a sophomore. Matt Szczur was lightly recruited while attending Lower Cap May Regional High School in southern New Jersey, but he has blossomed into a potential pro in both baseball and football during his time at Villanova. Szczur was named both the CAA’s Offensive and Special Teams Player of the Year this fall as he helped the Wildcats win the FCS Division One Football National Championship.
He has three seasons of baseball and one more season of football eligibility remaining, but he’s eligible for the MLB Draft this June. In this podcast interview with Collegebaseball360.com Editor Sean Stires he talks about the decision he might have to soon make on his future.

Tate has burst onto the national scene this season as a college football star, but he’s a college baseball player at Notre Dame as well. The Fighting Irish wide receiver/outfielder has become a Biletnikoff Award finalist and househould name on the gridiron this season while breaking most of the Notre Dame school records originally set by another Irish two-sport phenom, current Chicago Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija.

The Middle Tennessee State outfielder was named to Team USA last summer after a monster sophomore season. Brentz was named a 2009 All-American after he led the nation in both batting average (.465) and slugging percentage (.930) and he also tied with former Alabama slugger Kent Matthes for the national lead with 28 home runs. He also turned-in a 5-3 record with a 4.57 ERA on the mound, and helped lead MTSU to both the Sun Belt Conference regular season and tournament titles and a berth in the 2009 NCAA Louisville Regional.

The Florida Gulf Coast pitcher was named the Cape Cod League’s Pitching MVP over the summer. As a member of the Yarmouth Dennis Red Sox Sale led the Cape with 57 strikeouts, while his 1.47 ERA was the third lowest among Cape pitchers. Sale was also 7-4 with a team high 104 strikeouts in just 89 1/3 innings at FGCU last season. In this interview with Sean Stires Sale talks about his experience last summer as well as the chance to play in the NCAA Tournament for the first time. (Florida Gulf Coast has been transitioning to Division I status, and baseball is eligible for the post season for the first time this year.)
