<a href="http://www.simplesharebuttons.com" target="_blank" class="ssba_tooptip" id="ssba_tooptip"">www.simplesharebuttons.com

Weekend Series Tops Recent Comings & Goings…

What was probably the biggest happening of the fall took place over the weekend in Nashville, when Vanderbilt hosted Cal State Fullerton for a pair of games in the DeMarini Fall Classic. The Titans and new head coach, Rick Vanderhook, took both games in the exhibition series.

Fullerton took game one by a final of 10-8. The teams combined to allow 7 unearned runs thanks to single errors charged to each team. Titan starter, Dylan Floro, earned the win by allowing just a run on a hit in 4.0 innings of work. Grahamm Wiest got the win in relief in game two for Fullerton. He tossed 5.0 shutout innings with 5 strikeouts.

After going to the College World Series for the first time earlier this year, Vanderbilt has a lot of turnover in both the starting rotation and the everyday line-up.

Aces Grayson Garvin (13-2, 2.48 ERA) and Sonny Gray (12-4, 2.43 ERA) are both gone to the professional ranks, so Kevin Ziomek and Sam Selmon made the Saturday and Sunday starts, respectively.

Selmon tossed 5.0 shutout innings in his Sunday start, but the bullpen allowed 9 runs over the next 4.0 innings. He made just seven relief appearances as a sophomore in 2011. Ziomek gave-up 5 runs, but just one was earned in 2.0 innings. The lefty from Amherst, Mass. was 3-0 with a 1.59 ERA as a freshman last year with five starts and 22 relief outings.

Vanderbilt returns players like Tony Kemp, Mike Yastrzemski, Anthony Gomez, Riley Reynolds, and Connor Harrell from the CWS squad, but they lost their top RBI men in Aaron Westlake (18 HR, 56 RBIs), Jason Esposito (9 HR, 59 RBIs) and Curt Casali (7 HR, 53 RBIs).

Freshman phenom Chris Harvey caught one game and spent time as the DH in both games. He was a combined 1 for 7 in the series His lone hit was a solo home run in game one. It was Vanderbilt’s only long ball of the weekend. Harvey graduated high school early and is spending what would have been his senior year of high school as a freshman with the Commodores.

First baseman Carlos Lopez was 5 for 8 at the plate with 2 RBIs for the Titans. Outfielder Austin Kingsolver was 5 for 9 with 3 RBIs and a triple.

Both teams now prepare for their tough 2012 season openers in February. Tim Corbin and Vanderbilt open with a three game series at Stanford, while Vanderhook and Fullerton open with a three game set at Florida.

Raising More Than A Little Money…

Missouri and Iowa recently played a pair of exhibition games in Columbia as well. Mizzou won the first game 9-1, with the two teams tying 3-3 in the second game, but the outcomes were really the sub-plots to the weekend.

The real story was the fact that the exhibition games raised for than $12 thousand dollars to benefit the Joplin, Mo. Little League. Diamonds there were leveled after a tornado ravaged the entire Joplin area last May.

Ticket sales generated a total of $3,710, the sale of former Mizzou baseball jerseys raised $2,250 and $4,081 was collected in private donations.

All of the money raised will go directly to helping rebuild the fields for Joplin Little League. Following the tornado, the Little League received plenty of supplies and equipment but was left with the daunting task of rebuilding its fields.

Speaking of Missouri baseball, Texas Ranger second baseman, Ian Kinsler, is a Mizzou alum.

The Rhody Raffle…

For the Fourth straight year Rhode Island baseball is raising money for its program in a unique way. The winner of a raffle will have their choice of $10,000 in cash or a pair of Boston Red Sox season tickets.

The raffle runs through March 20, 2012, and is a significant fundraiser for the Rhode Island baseball team. All proceeds go directly back to the program to help offset the costs of travel, equipment and facility improvements.

An entry in the raffle is $100. Click Here to enter.

Robinson Renovation…

UCLA recently announced that it will add nearly 600 more chairback seats at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The project is expected to be complete by this December. Once it’s done, the stadium will seat 1,820 fans. 290 seats will be installed above each dugout to accommodate the expansion. 2012 will mark the 32nd season for Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Releasing Schedules…

2012 schedules continue to be released by individual schools on a regular basis. Our Schedule page has links to those (that we know of) that have been released to date. Expect schedules to continue to be released from now through early February.

We will once again publish a list of some of the top non-conference schedules from across the country once they are all releases. Some of the current front-runners include Stanford, Cal State Fullerton, TCU, and Wichita State. Check out the schedule page to check all of the schedules that have been released so far.

Moneyball Mike…

If you have seen the movie Moneyball, you may have been thinking (as I did) “I’ve seen that guy before”, during one of the scenes. UC Irvine head coach, Mike Gillespie, had a cameo in the Brad Pitt film. Gillespie had a non-speaking role playing former Oakland A’s coach, Ken Macha, while the A’s staff was meeting in an office. By the way, Gillespie looks much more like Macha than actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman resembles then A’s manager Art Howe.

The Commodores and Titans will play Sunday, October 23 at 11 a.m. with Saturday’s game time dependent on the football game time against Army. Vanderbilt will host the school’s first-ever fall ball series when the Titans visit Nashville.

The Titans are led by first year head coach, Rick Vanderhook, who was an assistant coach on UCLA’s 2010 College World Series team. Vanderbilt is coming off the program’s first ever trip to the CWS earlier this summer. Former Fullerton head coach, Dave Serrano, is now the head coach of Vandy’s biggest rival – Tennessee.

“We are extremely excited to have a program of Cal State Fullerton’s caliber come to Nashville to conclude our fall season,” Head Coach Tim Corbin said. “We are grateful that Coach Vanderhook has agreed to bring his team out to Nashville and Vanderbilt University. We are looking forward to playing against the Titans in front of our hometown fans and allowing our players the opportunity to play a team of this caliber during the fall. We feel strongly that this experience will be valuable for both ball clubs.”

The two games count toward each teams’ 2012 56-game regular season limit.

The Dores begin fall practice September 13 before wrapping up fall practice with the two-game series against Cal State Fullerton.

<a href="http://www.simplesharebuttons.com" target="_blank" class="ssba_tooptip" id="ssba_tooptip"">www.simplesharebuttons.com

A Look At Who’s Hot & Who’s Not In College Baseball

March is here and week three of the college baseball season is underway. Most parts of the Midwest and Northeast are still digging out of the snow, but it’s only a matter of time before it melts and spring officially gets here. It won’t be long until everyone is smelling the green grass that’s taken for granted in the nation’s sunbelt states.

With more games under everyone’s belts we’re getting a better gauge for what each team has. Here’s a look at this week’s Stock-Up/Stock-Down around college baseball.

Jason Coats led TCU with 6 RBIs vs. Cal State Fullerton

Stock-Up

TCU: The Horned Frogs went to Cal State Fullerton and took two of three games from the Titans to improve to 5-1. They did it by out-scoring Fullerton 13-3 in their two wins. Those wins were against All-Americans Daniel Renken and Tyler Pill. TCU is batting .341 with a .943 team OPS, while the pitching staff has a 2.82 ERA with 47 Ks in 51 IP.

Coastal Carolina: The Chanticleers were already ranked, and then they went and swept two games from UC Irvine last Saturday. It wasn’t like they were facing the Anteaters’ 3rd & 4th starters either. Coastal beat Daniel Bibona and Eric Pettis on the same day. Bibona was 12-1 last year with a 2.63 ERA, while Pettis was 5-2 with 17 saves as Irvine’s closer.

Texas: After losing two of three games at home to New Mexico to open the season the Longhorns swept a Stanford team that had swept Rice on opening weekend. The vaunted Longhorn pitching staff showed why it’s considered the best in the nation in the process. Taylor Jungmann, Cole Green, Chance Ruffin, and Brandon Workman combined to give-up just two runs with 26 strikeouts in 21 1/3 innings during the series.

East Carolina: Typically a 4-3 team wouldn’t be considered one whose stock is rising, but the Pirates have essentially played two Super Regionals to open the season. They lost two of three vs. a loaded Virginia team and then then took two of three from a very good South Carolina squad. ECU will rack-up a lot of wins by season’s end.

St. John’s: The Red Storm is off to a 6-0 start with wins over New Orleans (3), Minnesota, Michigan, and Illinois. They won their three games at the Big Ten/Big East Challenge by a total of four runs. The biggest long-term question Ed Blankmeyer’s team would appear to have is pitching. Bruce Kern and Nick Cenatiempo have both been good so far, but while it’s still early, neither has gone deep into a game yet. In their combined four starts neither has pitched more than five innings.

Washington State: The Cougars’ 6-0 start is their best since 1988. They have a staff ERA of 3.74 and a batting average of .363 in those six games. Wins over the likes of Seattle, Bethune-Cookman and Texas Tech haven’t been the stiffest of tests, but it’s been more than 20 years since they started as well against similar schedules as well.

Southeastern Louisiana: A 3-game sweep at Mississippi State last week has earned the Lions (8-0) the program’s first ever national ranking (#29 in this week’s Collegiate Baseball Poll). They’ve done it with good pitching and a well-rounded offense. Tyler Watkins and Brandon Efferson have each made two starts and have totaled 14.0 and 12.0 innings, respectively. Three relievers have also combined to post four saves for a staff with a 2.70 ERA. Meanwhile, the team is hitting .304 and 11 different batters have at least 3 RBIs.

Tim Esmay: One of the questions we raised coming into the season was whether Esmay could continue what Pat Murphy had done for the last 15 years. ASU is 7-0 in Esmay’s first seven games as head coach at his alma mater. Northern Illinois and Towson haven’t provided high-octane competition, but games vs. Cal Poly, Oregon State and Florida International this week should test the Sun Devils more.

Stock Down

UC Irvine: In addition to the previously mentioned losses to Coastal Carolina the Anteaters also lost to North Carolina State last weekend at the Baseball By The Beach Tournament in Myrtle Beach. They also lost 6-0 Tuesday

All-American Daniel Renken is 0-2 in his first two starts in 2010.

night at Pepperdine to fall to 4-4. Irvine is built on pitching, but it must improve its 6.75 staff ERA.

Cal State Fullerton: First the Titans lost to Oregon and Pepperdine on opening weekend, then they suffered two more home losses to TCU last weekend. The four losses at Goodwin Field are half as many as they had all of last year. Stud pitchers Daniel Renken, Tyler Pill and Noe Ramirez are a combined 1-4, while the offense has hit just .236 during the 3-4 start.

Minnesota: The Golden Gophers’ 0-3 performance at the Big Ten/Big East Challenge was probably the shocker of the event. They did face arguably the toughest slate of anyone in the field with losses to St. John’s (5-4), UConn (8-2) and Louisville (5-4). Those could be the top three teams in the Big East by season’s end. Minnesota has a solid 2.89 staff ERA, but like St. John’s their starters have not gone deep into games yet. The offense is hitting just .273 during a 2-4 start, but the Gophers should still be alright once Big Ten play starts.

Oregon: Yes, I did have the Ducks on the “Stock-Up” list last week after wins over Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State and Loyola Marymount, but I also warned not to get too excited too quickly. Sure enough, Oregon went to Hawaii and lost 3 of 4 games to the Warriors. It’s likely to be a roller coaster ride again for the Ducks in George Horton’s second season.

Southern Mississippi: The curse of a Cinderella going to the College World Series is the expectation(and bulls eye on the back) it brings the following year. That appears to be what happened to the Golden Eagles after they dropped 2 of 3 home games last weekend to LeMoyne. They also lost at home to Northwestern State on opening weekend. USM is hitting and pitching solidly, but they’re going to get the best effort of every team they play all season.

It’s only one weekend, but there were plenty of statements made over the course of the season’s first three days. Granted, the trends are a little skewed right now, since everything is based on mostly head-to-head match-ups, but we’ll do this every week throughout the season. Here are three teams whose stock is up and three whose stock is down after opening weekend:

Stock Up

New Mexico: Ray Birmingham’s Lobos did the nearly unthinkable when they went to Disch-Falk Stadium in Austin and took two of three games from top-ranked Texas. Both teams stranded a lot of runners, but the Lobos out-pitched the team with last year’s second best ERA (2.95) by compiling a 1.73 ERA compared to 2.67 for the Longhorns. The biggest difference was the late innings where New Mexico outscored Texas 6-1 in the series from the 6th-9th innings. The Lobos now find themselves in the national polls the earliest in program history. Last year’s #21 Baseball America ranking on March 23 was the previous earliest national ranking.

Oregon: Did the stars align for George Horton’s Ducks, or are they that good? Horton returned to the place where he won the 2004 National Championship and six College World Series berths and beat his former team, Cal State Fullerton, 7-3 on opening night. They’re off to a 3-1 start after wins over Long Beach State and Loyola Marymount along with an 11-7 loss to Pepperdine. Not bad for a team that won just 14 games in its first season of DI baseball since 1981 last year. The opening night win also snapped a 13-game losing streak that ended the 2009 campaign. Before anyone gets too excited though remember this: Oregon won its season opener and then took 2 of 3 games from defending National Champion Fresno State last year. They were 8-8 in their first 16 games only to win just 6 more times after March 15th. Their stock is up now, but wait and see might be the better approach for now where the Ducks are concerned.

Stanford: Stanford missed the NCAA Tournament in 2009, but made a big splash to start the 2010 campaign with a 3-game sweep of #5 Rice at Sunken Diamond. The biggest question for the Cardinal coming into the season appeared to be offense, but that question was answered at least for a week. Eleven different batters had at least one RBI over the weekend as Stanford outhit the Owls .327 to .233. Mark Marquess will find out a lot more about his team this weekend when they go to Austin for a 3-game set with Texas.

Stock Down

Texas: After a National Runner-Up finish last year Augie Garrido’s Longhorns were the consensus number one team entering the season. Texas opened 2009 with 11 straight wins and didn’t lose a home game until March 14. In fact, the Longhorns only suffered six setbacks at Disch-Falk Stadium all of last year. However, they dropped 2 of 3 games at home to New Mexico last weekend to unanimously fall from the top spot in each of this week’s rankings. Stat of the weekend: 19 combined runners left on base in their 6-5 & 3-1 losses. All the key parts are there, it’s just a matter of getting them in-synch. Texas hosts a hot Stanford team this weekend.

Rice: Credit Wayne Graham for going to California to start the season for a second straight year, but he and his Owls took 3 on the chin while being swept at Stanford. Rice hit just .233 as a team, but the 9.49 staff ERA along with 19 walks and 23 strikeouts in 24 2/3 IP have to be the most concerning stats from the weekend.. The longest outing by a Rice starter was 3 1/3 innings pitched by Jared Rogers in Saturday’s 14-5 loss (Stanford exploded for 11 runs in the 7th inning). To make matters worse, the Owls lost their home opener to Lamar 13-7 Wednesday night to fall to 0-4. Rice can point to the fact that his team bounced-back nicely after losing 2 of 3 games at Cal Poly to open last season. The Owls host Elon, Nebraska and Texas A&M Corpus Christi this weekend.

Cal State Fullerton: Dave Serrano’s Titans followed their season opening 7-3 loss to Oregon with a 6-0 setback to Pepperdine before beating Long Beach State 8-1 for their first win of the season. Fullerton hit just .240 in their three games, with the trio of Gary Brown, Billy Marcoe and Christian Colon combining for 12 of the team’s 23 hits. Meanwhile, starting pitchers Daniel Renken and Noe Ramirez yielded 7 earned runs in 11 2/3 combined IP. A 3-game home series with 2009 Super Regional team TCU is one of this weekend’s more intriguing match-ups.

FULLERTON, Calif. – Oregon brought the rain to southern California and it worked out nicely as the Ducks upset fourth-ranked Cal State Fullerton 7-3 on Friday night at Goodwin Field.

In Horton’s return to Fullerton, where he was the head skipper for 11 seasons and won one national championship, it was his second-year club with freshmen and sophomores building the lineup that looked like the composed squad.

Horton picked up his 265th win at Goodwin Field, after a monster sixth inning and special performances on the mound from starter Tyler Anderson and reliever Scott McGough.

The difference was a three-run inning in the sixth as freshman right fielder Jack Marder was issued a four-pitch walk from Cal State Fullerton starter Daniel Renken to lead it off. Two batters later, freshman first baseman Ryan Hambright connected on a one-out single on the hit-and-run to put runners on first and third. Renken struck out senior catcher Eddie Rodriguez for the second out of the inning, but sophomore second baseman Danny Pulfer stood in and laced a two-run double to deep right field to score the go-ahead run.

Renken was relieved by Kyle Mertins, but a Mertins’ balk moved Pulfer to third. Freshman third baseman J.J. Altobeli then hammered a single to right, allowing Pulfer to score. Kevin Rath came on in relief to retire Raulinaits and end the top of the sixth with Oregon leading 4-2.

Cal State Fullerton scored one in the bottom of the sixth as Anderson’s pitch count climbed into the 80s. Carlos Lopez was issued a one-out walk by Anderson, before retiring Billy Marcoe. Anderson found himself in trouble again and was behind in the count to Walker Moore, 2-1, when his night was ended and McGough entered the game. Moore ended up taking first on a walk before a pinch-hit single from Anthony Hutting allowed Lopez to score from second, but McGough recovered and ended the inning when he forced Joey Siddons to ground out to third.

Anderson (1-0), who for the second straight year opened the season for Oregon with a win, pitched 5 and 2/3 innings on the mound surrendering three runs on four hits on three walks while also striking out three on 87 pitches. McGough pitched the final three and 1/3 innings for the save, holding the Titans scoreless on three hits while dealing four strikeouts.

Hambright was 1-for-4 with two runs scored for the Ducks, while Altobelli was 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI as the Ducks youngest players stepped up for the season opener.

Oregon added three runs in the top of the eighth as Rath issued back-to-back four-pitch walks to Hambright and Rodriguez. CSF then moved Nick Ramirez from first base to the mound, and a sacrifice bunt from Pulfer resulted in an errant throw to first from Ramirez, allowing Hambright to score and putting Rodriguez and Pulfer on the corners with no outs. Later in the inning, Pulfer scored from third on a wild pitch, and the Ducks final run of the game came from KC Serna, who laced a one-run double down the left field line.

Renken took the loss for Cal State Fullerton, surrendering four runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out seven.

The Ducks ended the night with seven hits, as the Titans committed three errors.

It was also Serna who scored the first run of the game for Oregon when he reached base to lead off the game after being struck by the second pitch from Renken. He moved to third on two passed balls, and scored the game’s first run after Ramirez, manning first, failed to field Marder’s infield chopper.

But the Ducks’ lead was short-lived as Cal State Fullerton put two on the board in the bottom of the first. Gary Brown led off the bottom of the inning with single up the middle that was just out of reach of an outstretched Anderson. He moved to second on a deep fly out from Christian Colon before stealing third and scoring on a throwing error from Rodriguez as he tried to throw Brown out.

Ramirez and Lopez were both walked, and Marcoe didn’t let the RBI opportunity pass him by, connecting on a single up the middle that allowed Ramirez to come around and score.

Oregon returns to action tomorrow night at Long Beach State with first pitch scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Notes: The Ducks are now 18-14 on opening day…Oregon last beat a ranked team on Feb. 28, 2009, defeating the No. 15 Fresno State, 7-1…Friday night’s game had a 54-minute rain delay and lasted four hours and 23 minutes.

Irvine, Calif. — Following a season that once again concluded in Omaha, Neb., at the College World Series, Cal State Fullerton was selected to capture the 2010
Big West Baseball Championship, a title they lost to UC Irvine last season, according to the Big West Conference preseason poll conducted by the league’s nine head coaches. The Titans, who have claimed at least a share of seven of the last 11 titles and a conference-best 14, nabbed seven first-place votes for a total of 79 points and were followed by defending conference championship UC Irvine, who picked up two first-place votes en route to a 71 point total. Rounding out the top three were the Cal Poly Mustangs, sitting third with 60 points.

The Titans, under third-year head coach Dave Serrano, finished the 2009 campaign with a 47-16 overall record and a 17-7 conference mark, good enough for second place in the Big West. Cal State Fullerton swept both the NCAA Regionals and Super Regionals to advance to the College World Series for its 16th appearance.

Fullerton has a wealth of returning talent that includes an entire weekend pitching rotation, a closer, and a couple of top-round draft pick defenders up the middle to
go along with a Top 5 recruiting class. Slated to headline the Fullerton rotation are Daniel Renken, Noe Ramirez and Tyler Pill, while Nick Ramirez returns as the team’s closer. All four of the hurlers achieved All-American status a year ago and accounted for 34 wins, seven saves and a 3.24 combined ERA.

The Anteaters of UC Irvine are coming off one of their best seasons in program history, which witnessed the ‘Eaters capturing their first league crown with an outstanding 22-2 mark. UC Irvine also became the first team in conference history to go undefeated at home during league play and boasted the second-best conference winning percentage in Big West history at .917. Like Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine welcomes back a majority of their pitching staff, including All-Americans Daniel Bibona and Eric Pettis. Rejoining Bibona and Pettis on the mound in 2010 are Preseason All-America Christian Bergman and Crosby Slaught.

Cal Poly looking to continue its success of last season, was selected third in this year’s poll. The Mustangs concluded 2009 with an overall mark of 37-21, a third place finish in the Big West at 14-10 and made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since moving to Division I in 1995. Leading the charge offensively in 2010 is Big West Freshman of the Year Matt Jensen who was sidelined late in the season due to a fractured clavicle. Prior to his injury he sported a .375 batting average with 15 doubles, nine home runs and 53 RBI and recorded a 23-game hitting streak, the third longest in Cal Poly Division I history. Also coming back from injury this season is pitcher Steven Fischback, who in 2008 finished seventh in the Big West with 79 strikeouts and posted a 5-4 record with a 4.55 earned run average.

Long Beach State secured the fourth slot with 50 points, UC Riverside landed in fifth after receiving 48 points and UC Santa Barbara grabbed 36 points to take the sixth spot. Pacific locked down seventh with 30 points, followed by Cal State Northridge’s eight-place point total of 19. Rounding out the nine-team field with 12 points was UC Davis, who is playing in just its third season at the Division I level.

We are starting to receive releases from a few schools with players who are being invited to the 2010 USA Baseball team trials. We are told that schools are being allowed to individually announce their own invitees now, and then the full Team USA roster will be released by USA Baseball after all the invitations have been accepted.

This summer’s trials run from July 5-11 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. The final roster for Team USA will be announced in mid-July and the squad will compete in the V FISU World University Championships in Japan as well as friendship series against Korea in North Carolina at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary and at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham.

Here’s a look at some of the invitees we know of so far:

Matt Jensen-2B-Cal Poly

This is the second straight year Jensen has been invited to the Team USA Trials. After accepting the invitation a

year ago, Jensen fractured his collarbone in a Cal Poly game in early May and was unable to participate in the trials. Jensen (5-10, 190, Clovis, CA) sported a .375 batting average with 15 doubles, nine home runs and 53 RBI before fracturing his clavicle in May 2009. He suffered the injury when he was involved in a collision with a San Francisco baserunner. Jensen is the first Mustang baseball player to be invited to the National Team Trials.

Cal Poly head coach Larry Lee on Jensen: “Matt is one of the better ball players in the country.” “He should be able to follow up a tremendous freshman year with another quality season and is fully recovered from his broken collarbone.

“He’s really developed as a defensive second baseman to add to his already impressive credentials from an offensive standpoint,” Lee added. “Having the opportunity to represent the United States in this endeavor is a great honor and Matt is as good as it gets on and off the field. He will represent Cal Poly at the highest level this summer.”

Kyle Winkler-RHP-TCU

This is the second invite for Winkler as he participated in the 2009 trials last summer. Winkler completed a successful

freshman season, tying for the team lead with seven victories. In 17 appearances, he made 14 starts and posted a 7-1 record to go along with a 4.15 ERA. In 73 2/3 innings pitched, the righty tallied 48 strikeouts. He was named to the Mountain West Conference All-Tournament team and the Fort Worth All-Regional Team.

TCU head coach Jim Schlossnagle on Winkler: “This is a great honor for Kyle and our program,” Schlossnagle said. “Representing your country is one of the greatest honors one can receive in amateur baseball and Kyle was very close to making the team last year. I’m sure he will represent TCU at the highest level when the trials begin this summer.”

Nick Ramirez-P/1B & P-Tyler Pill-Cal State Fullerton

Ramirez

Both Pill and Ramirez are coming off seasons that earned them freshman All-American status in 2009 and come into the 2010 campaign as preseason All-Americans.

Pill (2009: 11-3, 4.06 ERA, 74 K, 13 BB) is likely to be the Titans’ Sunday starter on the mound again in 2010, and is the front-runner to be the starting right fielder when he is not pitching.

Also performing double duty in 2010 will be Ramirez (2009: .287, 10 HR, 31 RBI / 3-1, 2.61 ERA, 7 saves, 30 K, 10 BB) who will play first base and then serve as the Titans’ closer on the mound.

Pill

Cal State Fullerton head coach Dave Serrano will serve as Team USA’s pitching coach this summer. Utah’s Bill Kinneberg is the manager, while Nino Giarratano (San Francisco) and Ed Blankmeyer (St. John’s) round out the coaching staff.

Collegebaseball360.com will continue to follow 2010 Team USA Trials invitees as they are announced by their schools.
