The latest update regarding Cal baseball is this: They need a lot of money…fast. When I talked to Cal head coach Dave Esquer recently he was still in the process of trying to find out exactly how much he needed to raise and how soon (CLICK HERE to listen to the interview). It’s been an obviously fluid situation of information since the decision to ax the Cal baseball program was made in late September and Golden Bear supporters have done a great job trying to rally support to save the program. Their new web site, Savecalbaseball.com, says they have to raise $5 million by January 1, 2011. That’s a lot of money in not much time. The web site includes contact information on how anyone can pledge their support for Cal baseball.

Former Alabama head coach Jim Wells is back in baseball, but not in the college game. Wells was recently hired as an assistant baseball coach at Calvary High School in Shreveport, LA. He retired last year after 15

years and a 625-322 record at Alabama. Wells guided the Crimson Tide to the 1997 College World Series title game. His college head coaching career began at Northwestern State in Natchitoches, LA. Calvary head coach Rodney Traweek told the Shreveport Times that Wells’ hiring gives him a “dream team” of assistant coaches and added “He’ll help us with communication with college coaches, pitching, hitting, a little bit of everything.” Calvary won Louisiana state championships in 2007 and 2008.

Speaking of Alabama, Mitch Gaspard’s squad has announced its 2011 schedule. There’s not much in the way of “marquee” non-conference games on the slate, but with two SEC teams (Arkansas and Vanderbilt) that went to a Super Regional in 2010 and two other conference foes (South Carolina and Florida) that advanced to Omaha there’s not much incentive to toughen the non-conference schedule. Alabama (a 2010 Super Regional team itself) does get to host 2009 CWS champion LSU and 2010 champion South Carolina in its last two home SEC series of the season.

Schools are continually releasing their 2011 baseball schedules, and we are trying to keep up with them as best we can. There were probably more than 30 that were released last week. Click Here to visit our schedule page to see the list to date. If there is a schedule that has been released that we don’t have be sure to let us know and we’ll add it.

The Big Ten has been naming its “Big Ten Icons Top 50” over the last several weeks. Former Big Ten athletes like Jack Nicklaus (Ohio State), Super Bowl winner Drew Brees (Purdue) and Heisman winner Ron Dayne (Wisconsin) are on the list, but there are a few baseball players as well. Jim Abbott (Michigan) is #36 on the list, while multi-sport standouts Dave Winfield (Minnesota) and Otto Graham (Northwestern) and #15 and #14, respectively. Winfield played basketball and baseball for the Golden Gophers. He helped the basketball team win the 1972 Big Ten title and helped lead the ’73 baseball team to the College World Series. Graham was an All-American in both football and basketball, while hitting .300 as a centerfielder for the Wildcat baseball team. Winfield is in the baseball Hall of Fame, while Graham is in both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame. Click Here to see the Big Ten Icon list to date.

Construction recently began for a new stadium at Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC. Phase one of the project will consist of things like new a new concessions area, restrooms and entrance gate to Taylor Field. It is expected to be ready for the start of the 2011 season. Phase two will begin in June 2011. It will include a new press box, dugouts and grandstand that will seat 1,985.

The 28 members of the Legends Team, pared down from an original list of 95 nominees, were selected after more than 100,000 votes were cast by college baseball fans, college baseball writers and Division I head baseball coaches. The members of the Legends Team are former student-athletes and coaches who had the best CWS performances throughout the 60 years the event has been played at Rosenblatt Stadium.

Voting for the team was based solely on the former student-athletes’ performance when they were competing in the NCAA College World Series, and not for any regular season or post-collegiate performances.

The 28 members by name, school, position and year are:

*Utility Players

“With the history of the College World Series and all the great players to have been involved in the event, it’s an honor to be named to the Legends Team,” said Robin Ventura, who led his Oklahoma State team to consecutive College World Series appearances in 1986 and 1987.

Will Clark was the leading vote getter with more than 3,000 votes. Dave Winfield was the second leading vote getter with just under 3,000 votes.

The 28 CWS Legends Team members will be invited to attend the final College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium as guests of the NCAA. The members will be formally honored on-field during the CWS Opening Ceremonies on June 18, and invited to attend the first day of CWS competition on June 19. Mock baseball cards of each member featuring their collegiate photos will be posted on NCAA.com/cws.

“It’s a great honor,” said former Georgia Tech shortstop Nomar Garciaparra. “I’ve always believed that one of my favorite experiences in baseball was the College World Series. And now I look forward to working the games as a commentator for ESPN in June.”

A committee of select individuals from the National Baseball Writers Association, the Omaha World-Herald and NCAA staff was created to compose the original list of 95 nominees. This list included every former student-athlete who was voted onto a previous CWS anniversary team (25th, 50th and all-decade teams), as well as individuals who played in CWS in the last 14 years.

The utility players were determined by the oversight committee after the fan voting was completed. They represent those student-athletes who deserved recognition but did not garner enough votes at a particular position.

Tickets for the 2010 NCAA Men’s College World Series can be purchased by calling or logging on to www.ticketmaster.com. For more information on the Legends Team and the 2010 Men’s College World Series, log on NCAA.com/cws.

Eric Decker

MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota’s sputtering offense sure didn’t need this: Star wide receiver Eric Decker will miss the rest of the regular season because of a sprained left foot.

If the Gophers (4-4 overall, 2-3 Big Ten) get in a bowl game and Decker doesn’t need surgery, the school’s all-time leading receiver could play once more. Otherwise, Decker’s college career is done. He hurt his arch last Saturday.

“It’s tough right now,” quarterback Adam Weber said. “You have all these expectations for the season, and it’s a big blow.”

Decker sprained his left ankle last Nov. 1 in a loss to Northwestern, was unable to contribute in the following two games and the Gophers didn’t win again. This is a different injury, but the impact is the same.

Decker is one of 10 finalists for the Biletnikoff Award, given annually to the nation’s top receiver. He’s a baseball star, too, drafted by the Minnesota Twins in June, and he batted .319 with four home runs and 25 RBIs last spring.

Decker On The Diamond

He is the first Minnesota athlete to letter in football and baseball since 1999, and he’s only the third Minnesota player since 1966 to letter in football and be selected in the Major League Baseball Draft. (He joins Hall of Famer Dave Winfield on that short list.)

Decker was unavailable for comment Tuesday.

The transition to a pro-style, play-action offense after two seasons running the spread has been rough for the Gophers. They’re next to last in the conference with 21.1 points per game and last with 292.8 yards per game after dropping 20-0 and 38-7 decisions to Ohio State and Penn State in successive weeks.

Despite being held down this month by Purdue (three catches, 50 yards), Penn State (one for 42) and Ohio State (three for 27 before the injury), Decker has still accounted for half of Minnesota’s passing yardage and five of Weber’s six touchdown throws. He’s second in the Big Ten with 758 yards receiving.

“I think he’s the best wide receiver in college football, period,” coach Tim Brewster said Tuesday. “You know, it’s tough to replace a guy like that.”

Will the Gophers be all right? Defensive tackle Eric Small, another captain, called Decker the hardest worker on the team. He’s not only their most talented player but also perhaps their most inspiring.

During a loss to Cal, then the nation’s eighth-ranked team, Decker caught eight passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns with blood all over his face and jersey from a hard hit that opened a gash that needed stitches. He even threw for a score in that game.

“He adds everything you could ever want in a player,” Small said.
