The son of Los Angeles Dodgers great Steve Garvey has decided to leave the USC baseball team after just one semester on the college campus. Citing academic challenges, highly touted freshman outfielder Ryan Garvey has left the Trojans to enroll at Riverside Community College.

“I passed all my classes, I’m eligible, it was great, but I was studying from 9:30 to 6 every day and I was more worried about school than baseball, and my thing was to go there to play baseball,” the younger Garvey told the Desert Sun Newspaper. “I love ‘SC, it was one of my dream schools from the beginning, but my main goal is to be a professional baseball player and I felt I was more focused on school than sports.”

Garvey was selected in the 15th round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. By going to a junior college for a semester he will immediately be eligible for the 2012 MLB Draft. Had he stayed at USC, he would have had to wait until the 2014 draft before he was eligible again.

Garvey hit nine home runs with 44 RBIs and 13 doubles as a senior in 2011. Perfect Game rated him as the 20th overall high school prospect in the state of California earlier this year.

Garvey’s father, Steve Garvey, was a 10-time MLB All-Star. He played in 1,207 consecutive games as one point in his career, which ranks fourth in MLB history. The elder Garvey also played college baseball at Michigan State.

By Collegebaseball360.com Editor Sean Stires

Some sad news to start the Notebook this week. San Diego State head coach and MLB Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn has been diagnosed with cancer of the salivary gland. Gwynn’s cancer, which is located beneath his

tongue, is said to have been diagnosed early. He will begin radiation and chemotherapy treatment.

A much needed shot in the arm for college baseball out of Lincoln, NE. The University of Nebraska announced it plans to spend $4.75 million to build an indoor baseball/softball practice facility that would be located at Haymarket Park, where the Cornhuskers play their home baseball games inside Hawks Field. The proposed 22,000 square foot facility would include indoor batting cages and pitchers mounds. It will also give Nebraska a big leg-up when it heads to the Big Ten. The news also comes just more than a week after Cal-Berkley announced it will eliminate baseball, which has been in existence since 1892, after the upcoming 2011 season. Cal is currently in the process of an estimated $321 million renovation of its football stadium. Nebraska also plans to renovated its football stadium. That proposed project will cost about $55.5 million. Both Nebraska projects are still subject to final approval by its Board of Regents.

Future MLB great Steve Garvey played football & baseball at Michigan St. (courtesy MSU athletics).

Former MLB great Steve Garvey was recently inducted into the Michigan State Athletics Hall of Fame. Garvey was a football and baseball player at MSU from 1966-1968. In those days freshmen were not eligible to play, so Garvey served as head coach Duffy Daugherty’s scout team quarterback the week before the epic 10-10 tie with #1 Notre Dame. Garvey recorded 30 tackles on the gridiron the next fall as a defensive back and then earned All-American honors on the diamond in the spring of 1968 with a .376 average, nine home runs and 38 RBIs. He belted a grand slam in his first career at-bat at MSU. Garvey left Michigan State after the LA Dodgers took him with the 13th overall pick in the 1968 draft. He went on to play in five World Series and earned 1974 NL MVP honors.

Speaking of two sport athletes, we released our second Two-Sport Report of the fall last week. Among the notable recent performances noted there is Jacksonville State quarterback Coty Blanchard. The freshman earned All-Ohio Valley Conference honors last week for his efforts in the Gamecock’s win over Murray State. Jacksonville St. is ranked 4th in the most recent FCS national rankings. Blanchard was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles out of high school this June and plans to play shortstop at JSU next spring. The Two-Sport Report also includes updates on the likes of Clemson’s Kyle Parker, NC State’s Russell Wilson, Taiwan Easterling of Florida State, and many others.

South Carolina head coach Ray Tanner has received a contract extension. Tanner earned the extension after leading the Gamecocks to the program’s first national championship earlier this year. The new deal runs through 2015 and will pay him $510, 000 annually.

We also recently released a list of former college baseball players who are on the rosters of MLB Playoff teams. San Franciso Giants rookie Buster Posey is among those on the list. Each of the eight playoff teams has at least 16 former college guys on their active roster. Would you believe Kent State is tied with two other schools for the most players on the list? Click Here to see the full rundown.

Florida and Ole Miss each released their schedules last week. The Rebels don’t have any eye-popping non-conference games, but the Gators host three games with Miami and also play four games against Florida State. The series is split with single games in Gainesville, Talahassee, Tampa, and Jacksonville. Florida and Ole Miss will also each host defending national champion South Carolina in SEC action.

Cody Regis, Trevor Brown and Aaron Weimer were among UCLA players honored at Dodger Stadium (UCLA photo).

The UCLA baseball team was recently honored at Dodger Stadium for its runner-up finish at the College World Series. The Bruins finished the 2010 season with the best record in school history at 51-17 before falling to South Carolina in the best-of-three CWS Championship Series. The Dodgers also announced the 2011 Dodgertown Classic, which will take place March 11-13 at Dodger Stadium. UCLA, USC, Georgia, and St. Mary’s (CA) will all participate.

LSU has long been one of the most popular college baseball teams in the country, and it’s showing as well in the world of social media. According to sportsfangraph.com, LSU baseball ranks 29th in baseball social media followers. The Tiger’s combined Facebook and Twitter numbers total roughly 109,00o. The #29 ranking is tops among college baseball programs and comes in ahead of three MLB teams: the Pittsburgh Pirates, Arizona Diamondbacks and Washington Nationals. Sports Fan Graph tracks more than 84-million fans who follow teams on Facebook and more than 17-million who track teams on Twitter. The New York Yankees are the most followed baseball team with more than 4.5 million social media fans.

Texas scrimmaged Texas State Sunday, and there were both old and new faces on the diamond for Augie Garrido’s Longhorns. Texas lost 9-0 in the 12-inning fall exhibition, but next season’s potential starting rotation pitched well. junior Taylor Jungmann, senior Cole Green and sophomore Hoby Miner combined to surrender just one hit and one walk over the first 6.0 innings. Jungmann fired two perfect innings, while Green gave-up the hit. Sophomore Keifer Nuncio and freshman Nathan Thornhill combined to give-up seven runs in the 10th and 11th innings. It is the fall, and the Longhorns had trouble trying to turn double plays in both of those innings that would have limited the Bobcat damage.

Our coverage of the 2010 College World Series is brought to you by The Dugout in Omaha, with everything you’re looking for when it comes to officially licensed CWS hats and shirts. If you can’t make it to Rosenblatt make sure to follow the link for all of your CWS gear!

Tuesday Games

3:30 pm – South Carolina 11, #1 Arizona State 4 (ASU Eliminated)

8:00 pm – Oklahoma vs. Clemson

By Collegebaseball360.com Editor Sean Stires

2:25 p.m. – I’m currently sitting inside the Rosenblatt Stadium pressbox getting ready for the start of the Arizona State-Clemson game. Just moments ago, I hiked the Rosenblatt hill from Bob Gibson Boulevard to the press box for the last time. I’m heading out of Omaha tomorrow morning, but Chase Titleman and Paul Fairkoski will be here the rest of the week to provide more coverage of the last College World Series at Rosenblatt. I’ll have more on today’s events throughout the day …

As I write this, longtime CWS official scorer Lou Spry is being helped out of the pressbox by EMTs. He has an oxygen tank in tow. As we mentioned earlier this week, Spry has worked more than 600 CWS games here at Rosenblatt. Someone else now is in his seat scoring the game. Hopefully Lou is OK. Nebraska baseball media relations director Shamus McKnight filled in for both games. He did Monday morning’s game as well.

CWS official scorer Lou Spry

After it rained for about an hour this morning, the game-time temperature is 91 degrees with a heat index of 98.

It took South Carolina pitcher Sam Dyson 12 pitches to finally retire ASU leadoff man Drew Maggi to start the game. Dyson threw 13 pitches against the next six Sun Devil batters combined.

The Gamecocks erupted for eight runs in the second inning, including a 3-run HR by Jackie Bradley, Jr. and a 2-run blast by Adrian Morales. It’s South Carolina’s biggest offensive inning this season.

Arizona State starter Merrill Kelly had given up only four HR in 98.1 innings coming into Tuesday’s start, but he surrendered both home runs and gave up 8 ER in only 1.2 IP.

Yet more celebrity sightings in and around Rosenblatt. Former Nebraska football player Ndamukong Suh and baseball Hall of Famer Steve Garvey both have been around.

Home plate umpire David Savage left the field with medical staff due to apparent dehydration, prior to the bottom of the 7th inning. There was a brief delay in the game while Kelly Gonzales put on the home-plate gear.

The overall #1 seed has not won the College World Series since Miami did it in 1999. With top seed Arizona State now out of the tournament, that streak will continue for at least another year.

“Well, for me it’s just heartbreaking. That was my last college game that I’ll ever play, you know?” – Arizona State senior first baseman Kole Calhoun, after Tuesday’s loss to South Carolina.

“Well, I think it’s been the same. I’ve always been a bad coach in the first game. It’s hard to explain.” – South Carolina head coach Ray Tanner, when asked after the game about the fact that in three trips to Omaha his Gamecocks have lost their CWS opener but then won their next game.

Both teams from South Carolina (the Tigers and Gamecocks) managed 14 hits against ASU. All 14 Clemson hits were singles, while USC had a pair of doubles and three home runs.

Speaking of home runs, the three SC long balls brings the College World Series total to 11 through seven games. That’s $2,200 so far that will go to Boys Town here in Omaha.

With #1 Arizona State and #3 Florida eliminated, that leaves #6 UCLA as the only national seed still alive at the CWS. ASU is the first #1 seed to go 0-2 at the CWS since the NCAA Tournament field expanded to 64 teams (in 1999).

Does right field really suck?

Does left field really suck?

Will the two sides continue their back and forth chants at the new park next year?

Oklahoma starting pitching Bobby Shore threw 14 straight balls to Clemson batters in the bottom of the 4th inning before he got a called strike on John Hinson, who lined the next pitch for an RBI single to center field. Hinson’s hit chased Shore from the game. He gave up four earned runs on two hits and five walks in 3.0 IP.

10:40 p.m. - The Oklahoma-Clemson game officially has been suspended. Play will resume tomorrow at 3:30 central time. Clemson leads 6-1 going into the 6th inning.
