Alex Kaminsky (WSU photo)

1…Run allowed in 7 IP by Wright State starter Alex Kaminsky in Friday’s 2-1 win over #1/#2 Virginia.  Kaminsky struckout 7 to earn his first win of the season in a head-to-head dual with UVA sophomore ace Danny Hultzen.

10…Runs and hits allowed in 2 1/3 innings by Kentucky starter Taylor Rogers in Saturday’s 14-13 win over Monmouth.

0 & 9…Hits allowed & strikeouts recorded in 4 IP by Wildcat reliever Matt Little, who earned the win in that game after allowing just two hits.

10…Hit batters by Monmouth pitchers in the loss to Kentucky to tie an NCAA record.  It’s just the third time a pitching staff has hit 10 batters in a game.

4…Straight hit batters by Monmouth pitchers Andy McDonnell (1) and Stephen Prosapio, who hit Kentucky’s Braden Kapteyn with the bases loaded and the score tied 13-13 to give the Wildcats the winning run.

1…Career home run by 5′9-160 pound Kentucky redshirt junior Neiko Johnson, whose long ball on a 2-2 pitch in the bottom of the 9th inning tied the score at 13 just before the four straight hit batsmen.

103…Runs scored by Georgia State in a 4-game series vs. North Carolina Central.

14…Of the runs scored by Georgia State junior Mark Micowski, who transferred to the school this year after Vermont disbanded baseball last year.  Micowski hit for the cycle in the first four innings of Friday’s 32-3 victory.  He batted .636 with 10 RBIs in the four games.

17…Combined strikeouts by George Washington pitchers Matt Branham and Scott DeCecco in Friday’s 5-1 win over USC Upstate.  The combined effort tied a school record.

210…Career Ks by Branham-whose career high 12 strikeouts in the win made him the 3rd pitcher in GW history to top the 200 K mark.

6…Straight wins by USC Upstate prior to the loss-a record for the Spartans since joining the Division One ranks.

1…Hit allowed by West Virginia’s Jarryd Summers in 8 innings in a 1-0 loss to Western Carolina.  Summers fanned 11 in the loss.  The only hit he allowed was a solo home run by WCU third baseman Tyler Kirkpatrick.

1…Wild pitch by Longhorn starter Brandon Workman-after a triple by Houston’s Blake Kelso-which allowed the game’s only run to score.

2…Losses by Cal State Fullerton in a 3-game series at Arizona to fall to 4-6 on the season.  The Titans started the year ranked in the top 10 in every poll.

1…Inning pitched by Titan All-American Daniel Renken in Friday’s 8-7 loss to the Wildcats.  Renken was lifted after hitting Wildcat CF Joey Rickard to lead-off the 2nd inning.

3…Walk-off wins by Arizona this season after freshman Seth Mejias-Brean singled home classmate Alex Mejia in the bottom of the 11th inning in that win over the Titans.

8…Strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings by Florida starter Alex Panteliodis in Friday’s 7-1 series-opening win over Miami (FL).

7…Strikeouts in 3 1/3 scoreless, hitless innings pitched by Gator reliever Nick Maronde to earn his first save of the season in that same win over the Hurricanes.

Kevin Chapman

4…Shutout innings pitched by Florida reliever Kevin Chapman in Sunday’s series-clinching 4-2 win over Miami.  Chapman gave-up just one hit with two strikeouts to earn his second save of 2010.

17…Combined strikeouts in 12 innings pitched by Duke starters Eric Pfisterer (10) and Michael Ness (7) who each tossed six shutout innings to help the Blue Devils to a 3-game sweep of Temple.

11…Strikeouts in 6 IP by Florida Gulf Coast ace Chris Sale in a 7-2 win over Wichita State.

2…Home runs hit over the weekend by Middle Tennessee State’s Bryce Brentz.  The outfielder led the nation with 28 HR last year, but he had been shutout through the first two weeks of the season.

1…Loss this season by Washington State after falling 4-1 in Sunday’s finale of a 4-game series with Utah.  The Cougars had started 9-0 for their best opening to a season since 1988.

Steve Fernandez

138…Pitches thrown by Santa Clara starter Alex Rivers in a 4-0 win over San Jose State.  Rivers scattered seven hits with five strikeouts for his third career complete game.

5…RBIs by St. Louis redshirt freshman Steve Fernandez to help St. Louis down Ohio State 10-9 on Saturday.

109…Pitches thrown by West Virginia’s Chris Enourato, who struckout 9 in seven innings of relief to help the Moutaineers to an 11-8 win over Illinois.  Enourato retired 16 of the first 17 batters he faced.

3…Wins by WVU (with seven losses) this season.  Enourato has earned two of the wins and a save in his five relief outings.

16…RBIs in five games by New Mexico State’s Wade Reynoso.  He batted .522 (12-23) with 3 home runs and 11 runs scored as well in wins over New Mexico and St. Joseph’s.

BIG Ten/BIG EAST Challenge All-Tournament Team

CollegeBaseball360.com – in conjunction with coaches and media-relations representatives from the 20 teams – has selected the all-tournament team for the 2010 Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge (held Feb. 26-28, in the St. Petersburg, Fla., area). The selections include 11 first-teamers, 11 second-teamers and seven honorable mention.

Selections were based on statistics during the three games, in addition to other criteria such as clutch play, defensive contributions, team leadership and other intangibles. The honorees include at least one from all 20 participating teams, led by three from Louisville and two each from seven other teams (Cincinnati, Iowa, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State, St. John’s and Villanova).

Shortstop Joe Panik (pictured) helped St. John’s join Louisville as the only 3-0 teams at the Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge. Panik batted 5-for-8 with 3 walks (also reached twice via HBP) and factored into nearly half of  SJU’s total runs (6 of 13) during the tournament. … Note: eight other teams went 2-1: Cincinnati, Connecticut, Iowa, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State and Villanova.

The all-tournament selections feature 11 juniors, nine sophomores, five seniors, three freshmen and a fifth-year senior. Four are New Jersey natives and four more are from Ohio, plus three from Kentucky, two each from California, Indiana, Illinois, New York and Pennsylvania – and one each from Florida, Iowa, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

The honorees include one pure leadoff hitter, two that batted in the #2 spot all weekend, a pair of 3-hole hitters and three cleanup batters (plus two 5-hole hitters, one 6-hole, two 7-hole, one 9-hole and six who batted in multiple lineup spots during the tournament).

Ohio State pitcher Alex Wimers is the only repeat selection to the Challenge all-tournament team. (Note: all class years referenced below refer to academic standing … additional headshots and action photos will be added to this release, time permitting).

Texas Tops Baseball/Football School List In 2009

Both Longhorn Teams Are National Runners-Up

Technically we’re cheating a little bit, but what the heck.  The seemingly forever lead-up to the January 7 BCS National Championship game between Alabama and Texas I started thinking about schools that have been exceptional this year in both baseball and football.

Texas finished second at the College World Series in 2009, and then came-up short again with a 37-21 loss to the Tide to end the 2009 college football season.  As I said, we’re cheating a bit, because while the bulk of the action came in the 2009 calender year the CWS was in the 2008-2009 academic year.

With that disclaimer out of the way, here’s a look at how schools performed on the diamond and gridirion in ‘09…

  1. Texas:  Lost to LSU in the CWS Championship Series in Omaha and lost to Alabama in Pasadena in the BCS Title Game.
  2. LSU:  The Tigers won college baseball’s national championship and lost to Penn State 19-17 in the New Year’s Day Capitol One Bowl.  Two Sport star Chad Jones pitched for LSU in Omaha and started all 13 football games at safety in ‘09.
  3. Alabama:  The football team won the BCS Championship and the baseball team played in an NCAA RegionalMark Ingram won the school’s first Heisman Trophy in 2009, while Kent Matthes tied for the national lead with 28 home runs.
  4. Arkansas:  The Razorbacks made it to the College World Series and the football team beat East Carolina 20-17 in the Liberty Bowl.
  5. North Carolina:  Baseball went to a fourth straight CWS and football fell 19-17 to Pittsburgh in the Meineke Car Care Bowl.
  6. Southern Mississippi:  The Golden Eagle baseball team had a Cinderella run to Omaha while the football team lost 42-32 to Middle Tennessee State in the New Orleans Bowl.
  7. FloridaTim Tebow ended his career with a 51-24 pasting of Brian Kelly-less Cincinnati in the Sugar Bowl and baseball played in a Super Regional.
  8. TCU:  The Horned Frog football team’s only loss was to Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl and the baseball team was one win away from Omaha with a Super Regional loss to eventual national runner-up Texas.
  9. Ole Miss:  Baseball played in a Super Regional and football beat Oklahoma State 21-7 in the Cotton Bowl.
  10. Florida StateBobby Bowden cruised into retirement with a 33-21 win over West Virginia in the Gator Bowl and the baseball team played in a Super Regional.
  11. Clemson:  The football team beat Kentucky 21-13 in the Music City Bowl and baseball advanced to a Super Regional.  Kyle Parker threw a touchdown pass in the bowl win and scored a run in the Super Regional.
  12. East Carolina:  Lost to Arkansas in the Liberty Bowl and played in a Super Regional.
  13. Middle Tennessee State:  Football beat Southern Mississippi in the New Orleans Bowl and baseball played in an NCAA RegionalBryce Brentz tied for the national lead with 28 HR.

There were other schools such as Miami (FL) that played in both a bowl game and made an NCAA Regional in an NCAA Regional, but we cut the list off with MTSU.  The Blue Raiders have played in just four bowl games in their history.   The fact that they also played in a baseball regional in the same calender year makes the feat all the more unique for the Sun Belt Conference school.

Towson 2010 Baseball Schedule

Tigers To Face Most Challenging Slate In School History

TOWSON, Md. - Starting his 23rd season as the Tigers’ baseball coach, Mike Gottlieb has put together the toughest schedule in school history for the 2010 Tigers. The Tigers, 28-25 last season, will play a very ambitious 57-game schedule which features two teams that reached the College World Series in 2009.

The Tigers, who play their first 15 games on the road, will travel to Arizona State in late February for a four-game series against the Sun Devils, ranked fifth in the pre-season poll. Arizona State posted a 51-14 record last year and reached the College

World Series. In late March, the Tigers will visit #3 Virginia for a two-game series. The Cavaliers had a 49-15-1 record last season and won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship. Virginia also reached the College World Series.

Complete 2010 Towson Schedule

The Tigers open the season on the weekend of February 19-21 with an appearance at the Elon Classic. Towson faces Elon in the first round before playing North Carolina A&T and Ohio University in the second and third rounds.

After visiting Arizona State for a four-game series on Feb. 26-28, the Tigers travel to Maryland for a single game on March 3. From March 5-7, the Tigers travel to High Point University for a three-game series. On March 12-14, the Tigers will be on the road for the fourth straight weekend when they visit Tulane University.

On Wednesday, March 17, Towson opens its home schedule by hosting Mount St. Mary’s at Schuerholz Park.

The Tigers, who were 12-12 in the Colonial Athletic Association last season, open their 24-game CAA schedule with a three-game series at James Madison University on March 19-21.

A two-game home-and-home series with West Virginia and a three-game set at North Carolina State also highlight Towson’s non-conference schedule.

“I really like this schedule,” says Gottlieb, who has led the Tigers to back-to-back winning seasons. “Playing some of the teams that we play should help us prepare for the CAA. The only way to get better is to play the best teams.”

The Tigers return 21 letter winners from a team that narrowly missed qualifying for the CAA Tournament. Led by senior centerfielder Kevin Collins and junior second baseman Chris Wychock, the Tigers have four of their top six hitters returning from a squad that set a school record with a .321 team batting average.

Western Carolina will open its 2010 season at home at Ronnie G. Childress Field at Hennon Stadium on Friday, Feb. 19 as it welcomes the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs to town for an afternoon game. The two will complete the three-game series in Forest City, N.C., at McNair Field, the home of the Coastal Plain League member, Forest City Owls, Feb. 20-21.

Additional early-season, non-conference foes visiting Cullowhee include Eastern Kentucky – Moranda’s alma mater – on Feb. 26-28, with Southern Illinois-Edwardsville coming to town for a two-game set March 9-10. It will be the first meeting between the two since 1978.

Between the EKU and SIU-Edwardsville dates, the Catamounts will again travel to Greenville, N.C., to participate in the Seventh Annual Keith LeClair Classic at East Carolina’s Clark-LeClair Stadium. The three-day tournament includes the host Pirates and Catamounts, as well as meetings with West Virginia and Illinois. The tournament is named in honor of WCU Hall of Famer, former head coach at WCU and ECU, Keith LeClair, who passed away in July of 2006 after a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Western hosts first-time foe, New York Tech, in Cullowhee at the beginning of April.

The Catamounts will also have home-and-home, non-conference meetings with Charlotte, UNC Asheville and High Point. Also, after a meeting in Knoxville on April 7, former WCU head coach Todd Raleigh will bring his Tennessee Volunteers to Childress Field/Hennon Stadium in Cullowhee on Wednesday, April 21.

“It is a testament to our program’s great tradition that Coach Raleigh and a very talented Tennessee squad will visit Cullowhee in 2010. Over the last two seasons, we have attracted BCS conference schools such as Clemson, BYU, Georgia Tech and now UT to Cullowhee. I know our fans will be very excited to welcome Todd back for this mid-week match-up,” Moranda added.

Other headline road trips include visiting Georgia Tech on Tuesday, March 2 and Georgia on Wednesday, April 28.

Western Carolina, which finished 35-22 overall and 19-10 in SoCon play a season ago and won 18 of its 30 home games, will host conference opponents College of Charleston (March 26-28), Wofford (April 9-11), UNC Greensboro (April 30-May 2) and Furman (May 7-10). The Catamounts will wrap-up their 2010 regular season slate by hosting Davidson on May 20-22 before traveling to Charleston for the conference championship.

SoCon road trips this season include visiting The Citadel for its conference opener, March 12-14, with a trip to Boone and arch-rival, Appalachian State, the following weekend (March 19-21). Other road three-game conference series include at Elon (April 16-18), Georgia Southern (April 23-28) and Samford (May 14-16).

Western Carolina will resume individual preparations for the 2010 season on January 11, with the first official team practice scheduled for February 1, per NCAA regulations.

Bowling Green 2010 Baseball Schedule

Bowling Green State University baseball has announced the release of its 2010 Falcon baseball schedule which features matchups with teams in the Big East, SEC and Big Ten conferences.  Those games compliment a full MAC schedule.  A total of 37 of 56 games will be played outside of the state of Ohio.

The Falcons will waste no time in finding tough competition to groom them for the upcoming season. To begin the 2010 campaign, Danny Schmitz will take his team on a road trip to the Bluegrass State for six games to begin the season.

The Falcons start the year Feb. 19-21 in Louisville, KY to open the season against the defending Big East regular season and tournament champion Louisville Cardinals. The Cardinals finished 2009 just three wins short of 50 for the

season and defending their home field with an 81 percent success rate. The Cardinal pitching staff led the Big East in team ERA (4.32) as well as in homeruns (85) and total bases (1,124). Last year UL swept BG in a three game set by a combined score of 33-12.

The road trip through Ohio’s southern neighbor continues with three games against the University of Kentucky. Though UK baseball finished fifth in the SEC East Division, College Baseball Newspaper has tabbed the Wildcats as having the sixth-best recruiting class in the nation, an honor the program has received two years in a row.

To open the month of March the Falcons will head further south to the former home of the Cleveland Indians spring training program, Winter Haven, Florida. The Falcons will spend nine days (March 5-14) in Winter Haven and play as many games during that span. Only two of the eight opposing teams return for this year’s Russ Matt Central Florida Invitational with Indiana and Sacred Heart, but six very skilled teams will visit to provide the Falcons some tough competition.

The Falcons will take the field against Northeastern, who finished the 2009 season with a 28-25 overall mark, to open their slate during the invitational. The next three days will feature match ups against Rhode Island, Butler and Sacred Heart. Those three teams sport a combined record of 77-89-1 from a season ago with Rhode Island garnering the most success following a 37-20-1 campaign a season ago. After enjoying an off-day at the mid-way point of the week long trip, the Falcons will head back into battle against the Ivy League’s Yale University for a double-header against the Bulldogs. North Dakota State and Indiana will round out the schedule for the duration of the tournament before the Brown and Orange return to Bowling Green.

Last year, the Falcons finished 5-3 during their stay in Winter Haven with signature wins over Bradley in extra innings and against 2010 recurring opponent Eastern Kentucky University. Of the two teams that the Falcons will play in back-to-back years in the tournament, Indiana and Sacred Heart, the Falcons were 1-1 in games against those opponents having lost to the Hoosiers 15-7 and defeating the Pioneers in a pitcher’s duel, 1-0.
Bowling Green will bring baseball back to northwest Ohio when they open their home schedule with a local rival in the Findlay Oilers. The Falcons will engage in a battle for I-75 South on March 16 at Warren E. Stellar Field for the home opener. Bowling Green has won their last ten home openers at Warren Steller Field and has not lost since a 7-6 defeat to the Wright State Raiders in the 1999 season opener.

Schmitz and Company continue to yield southern hospitality as the team travels east straight from EKU to play another Big East team in the West Virginia Mountaineers. The Mountaineers finished third in the Big East last season and only lost five games at home. The Falcons had not played a Big East team since 2008 when the Falcons fell to Villanova 10-8 in Bradenton, FL. This year, the teams will meet at a neutral site at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio.

Of the early non-conference schedule, head coach Danny Schmitz said, “This is probably the toughest schedule we’ve put together. It is a schedule that we wanted to challenge our team with. We’re doing that for a reason. We have to get ourselves ready for conference play because the Mid-American Conference is an outstanding baseball conference.”

Schmitz continued, “We have high expectations [of the players]. You still have to earn it each day you cross the white lines. This schedule is going to be very, very competitive. We hope our kids are going to be up to the task.”

With their return back to Falcon country, BGSU will open its conference slate with MAC West foe Central Michigan on March 24. It will be the only time the Chippewas and the Falcons will play in 2010 but will ready Bowling Green for a home weekend set with Northern Illinois beginning two days later.

Bowling Green will step out of conference again to play Atlantic-10 power house Dayton for a single showdown to close out the month of March. The Dragons and Falcons have had three of their last five matchups cancelled due to weather since 2007. In those two matchups, the Dragons have come out on top both times. In their lone matchup in 2007, the Falcons took the Dragons to 12 innings before losing 8-7 in an extra-inning thriller.

The next four contests between April 2 and April 6 will take the Falcons into Michigan for a three-game series against Eastern Michigan. BG will then hop on the bus to East Lansing, MI. for its first contest with a Big Ten opponent in the Michigan State Spartans. Since 2001, Bowling Green has a 15-19 record when playing in the state of Michigan with nearly as many weather cancellations as wins.

The Falcons will then embark on their final game with a Michigan school against Michigan on April 14. Last year the Falcons beat the Wolverines 8-3 after not having played them since the 2002 season when the Falcons lost 4-3.

Right across the border heading back into Ohio, MAC rival Toledo will be waiting for the visiting Falcons for a weekend series to be held in the Glass City. Bowling Green possess 102 wins against Toledo over their 88 year rivalry. That stands as the most wins BGSU has over any school they have played in program history.

After back-to-back home games against Dayton and Western Michigan on April 20-21, the Falcons hit the road again, this time going to Athens for three games against Ohio and then heading to northeast Ohio for the season finale versus Cleveland State.

Six consecutive Mid-American conference home games follow on the Falcon schedule when Bowling Green plays host to the Miami Redhawks and Akron Zips to close out April heading into the first week of May (April 30-May 9).

For the first time since April 26, 2006 the Falcons will head back to South Bend, Ind. for a single out-of-conference game with the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. The last time Bowling Green took the trip to South Bend the Falcons outscored the Irish 11-8 on their home field. That win had broken a ten game winless streak against Notre Dame since 1990.

Bowling Green then heads to Kent, Ohio to take on the once nationally ranked Golden Flashes, who had taken two-of-three from the Falcons in 2009. Kent State finished one game behind the Falcons in the MAC standings last year after ranking second in the conference in team pitching as well as in team batting, finishing behind Bowling Green.

Another Horizon League team will come to the Falcons’ territory when the Penguins of Youngstown State come to Steller Field on May 18. Despite a 16-35 record a season ago, the Penguins return six of eight regular position players from their starting lineup and all three of their starting pitchers from last season.

“I think year in and year out there are some outstanding teams,” said Schmitz on the quality of MAC baseball this year. “Kent State as well as OU will be very strong again this year. Miami (OH) was a little young last year, but they’ve gained a lot of experience. We finished off the season with Akron and had a heck of a battle with them for three games and we expect Akron to be very much improved. You really have to bring the ‘A-game’ this year.”

This year the Mid-American Conference Tournament will be held in Chillicothe, Ohio at VA Memorial Stadium. Should the Falcons win a bid to be in field of eight MAC teams to participate in the tournament, they will return to the same field that they are scheduled to play West Virginia earlier in the season.

“We are excited to play another challenging schedule for the 2010 season as we continue to build the foundation of our program here at Michigan State,” said Boss. “Playing in Greenville to start the season against outstanding competition in Clemson, Furman, and Miami (OH) will be a difficult task, but that trip is one of the highlight of our year because of the good people of Greenville and their hospitality.”

Following the Challenge, the Spartans’ will take on Southeast Missouri State, Samford, Eastern Michigan and two SEC opponents in Mississippi State and Alabama, in their seven-game spring trip (March 5-12) through Mississippi and Alabama.

“The BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge will be just that, as we will face three outstanding opponents,” said Boss. “The spring trip should be a great experience at Mississippi State, Samford and Alabama.”

After a three-game series with Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., March 20-21, MSU will open its home schedule at McLane Baseball Stadium with four games against Oakland University, beginning on March 26.

The Spartans kick off Big Ten play on April 2 when they host Iowa for a three-game set. In addition to in-state schools Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Oakland, the Spartans will also take on Central Michigan (three times) and Western Michigan (once).

“Weekend series’ at Notre Dame and at home against Oakland will prepare us for a very challenging Big Ten slate,” Boss said. “Midweek games vs. EMU, WMU, CMU and Bowling Green will be equally challenging, but our players came to Michigan State to play against outstanding competition and we feel like we have given them that opportunity.”

Six teams on the Spartans’ schedule – Clemson, Louisville, Alabama, Minnesota, Ohio State and Indiana – all appeared in last year’s NCAA Tournament.

The Spartans will play four games at Oldsmobile Park, highlighted by the April 7 exhibition match-up with the Lansing Lugnuts in the Crosstown Showdown. Last year’s Showdown drew a stadium-record crowd of 12,992.
