For the first time since 1958, Florida swept its regular-season games from rival Florida State – after rallying Tuesday for a 6-3 win  in Tallahassee (the Gators’ 15th come-from-behind win of the season and third win over the ‘Noles in 2012). That exciting 2-vs.-1 showdown was one of six head-to-head battles on Tuesday between top-50 teams in the CB360 Composite National Rankings (and one of 28 overall featuring top-50 squads). Favorites won 74% of Tuesday’s CB360 top-50 games (20-7, with one rainout). front-page photo courtesy of Florida

Tuesday produced a crazy run of extra-inning thrillers across the top-50 scoreboard – as an unusually high number (5) of the games extended past nine innings. In one head-to-head matchup, East Carolina (cb360 #26) and host Elon (#42) entered the 9th inning scoreless, with ECU ultimately winning 2-1 in 10. An even rarer sight played out in Starkville, as visiting South Alabama and #34 Mississippi State combined to put 23 scoreless half-innings on the board before the host Bulldogs won on Wes Rea’s 2-run blast in the bottom of the 12th (2-0).

Tuesday’s other extra-inning games all featured west-coast teams: #28 Oregon State 10-7 at Nevada (10) … #44 Pepperdine 8-7 at UC Riverside (11) … and Loyola Marymount 8-5 at #39 USC (12). Nevada had trailed 7-0 mid-game before rallying (including a run in the bottom of the 9th) to extend to the 10th.

The wild finish in Riverside saw UCR score twice in the 8th, then USC force extras with a pair in the top of the 9th before both teams scored three times in the 10th and the Waves finally plated the decisive run in the 11th. Elsewhere involving a WCC team, LMU was poised to win 4-2 at USC – but the Trojans scored twice in the bottom of the 9th (something they had done days earlier to win the series opener vs. Cal, 2-1). Ultimately, the Lions scored four in the 12th late Tuesday en route to the 8-5 win.

In addition to the wins by Florida and LMU, Tuesday’s five other top-50 upsets featured upsets of #3 Kentucky (a 12-0 romp by its in-state rival, #30 Louisville) and #4 Texas A&M, which fell 3-2 to always-dangerous Texas Arlington.

Elsewhere around the top-50, Oklahoma – the same day it fell out of the CB360 top-50 – picked up a huge win over #12 Arkansas (4-0) while UC Santa Barbara held off #31 Cal Poly in a 6-5, non-conference meeting between those Big West squads. Florida Gulf Coast – one week removed from its win over Florida State – beat another top-50 team on Tuesday, winning 6-5 over #45 Florida Atlantic.

Tuesday’s six head-to-head matchups between CB360 top-50 teams (several referenced above) also included another quality win by #11 UCLA, 4-2 vs. #15 Cal State Fullerton.

The six teams that have entered/returned to the CB360 top-50 include: (35) Indiana State, (39) USC, (44) Pepperdine, (45) Florida Atlantic, (46) Dallas Baptist and (48) Belmont– replacing Liberty, Oklahoma, College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina, UC Irvine and California.

The 17 CB360 top-50 teams that are idle on Tuesday include: #7 North Carolina, #8 Miami, #10 Arizona, #16 Purdue, #20 North Carolina State, #21 San Diego, #22 New Mexico State, # 24 Virginia, #25 Sam Houston State, #27 Appalachian State, #35 Indiana State, #38 Missouri State, #40 Georgia, #41 Maryland, #46 Dallas Baptist, #47 Wake Forest and #50 TCU.
