UVA Stays #1 After Sweep Of UNC

DURHAM, N.C.—Virginia had two walk-off wins in a three-game sweep of North Carolina to extend its winning streak to 14 games and remain at No. 1 in the Baseball America Top 25 rankings. This marks the fourth straight week the Cavaliers have been No. 1 and the 10th time overall this season.

The top four in the rankings all stayed put as Texas, Arizona State and Florida all took care of business and kept the Nos. 2, 3 and 4 spots, respectively. A pair of teams from the Palmetto State both moved up in the top 10, as Coastal Carolina and South Carolina both won important conference road series. The Chanticleers jumped up to No. 5 after clinching the Big South Conference regular-season title with a sweep of second-place Liberty, while the Gamecocks kept pace with Florida in the Southeastern Conference race by sweeping then-No. 12 Arkansas, earning themselves the No. 6 ranking.

Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech both moved up three spots after winning their Atlantic Coast Conference series. The Hokies climbed to No. 12 after taking two of three from Duke, while the Yellow Jackets jumped to No. 13 after winning a critical series against Miami, which fell one spot to No. 14. Oklahoma and Auburn were among the other teams making moves, jumping up a couple places in the rankings, to Nos. 15 and 16, after winning series against Memphis and Tennessee, respectively.

A couple of teams joined the rankings this week. Washington State became the eighth different Pacific-10 Conference team to enter the rankings this year at No. 24 after winning a series on the road against Stanford, which fell out of the rankings for the third time this season. UC Irvine, a preseason top 10 team, also re-entered the rankings for the first time since early April thanks to a series win against UC Santa Barbara. The Anteaters have won four straight series to land at No. 25.

The staff of Baseball America determines the Top 25 rankings. Records indicated are through games of May 16 and do not include ties.
