FULL RECAP: CB360 Top–50 Opening Week (Feb. 15–18, 2019)

February 20, 2019
By

This page has been fully updated and expanded, providing summary text, recap links and even some embedded video for key 2019 Opening-Week games in Division I baseball, featuring teams in the current CB360 Composite National Rankings (CNR) Preseason  Top-50 (and also conference favorites for all other leagues, with those results at the bottom of this page).

UConn junior closer Jacob Wallace (Methuen, Mass.) saved both of the Opening Week wins over Louisville (CB360 Composite #9), in Lakeland, Fla. Wallace allowed only one baserunner (a hit batter) in 3.1 shutout innings, while stranding three inherited baserunners during the two games and totaling four strikeouts, with no hits or walks allowed (he overcame three wild pitches). The Huskies entered the season 34th in the CB360 Top–50, trailing only [16] East Carolina among American Athletic Conference teams. – photo courtesy UConn

The various Opening-Week games (Fri.–Mon.; Feb. 15–18) saw CB360 Top–50 higher-ranked teams win at an .821 clip (110–24). As has been the case typically in the past, the lower-ranked teams had greater success later in the weekend (i.e. when the pitching advantage is more equalized).

(As usual, also follow via Twitter@CB360updates for plenty of detailed notes, links, etc.).

>> Here was how the higher-ranked teams fared in Opening-Week games involving CB360 Composite Top–50 teams:

• 36–6 (.857) – Fri., Feb. 15
• 43–9 (.827) – Sat., Feb. 16 (with several doubleheaders)
• 29–8 (.784) – Sun., Feb. 17
• 2–1 (.667) – Mon., Feb. 18
>> Total: 110–24 (.821) by CB360 Top–50 higher-ranked teams

There were 33 total Opening Week series (three of them head-to-head) involving CB360 Top–50 teams, and only two of them saw the lower-ranked CNR team win that series:

• [34] Connecticut > [9] Louisville
(Lakeland, FL; 3–2…2–12…8–3)
• at [36] UC Irvine > [33] Washington (5–9…2–1…6–4; Sat. DH + Sun.)

In addition, Horizon league favorite Wright State won the Saturday game, 9–5, at [10] Ole Miss to ultimately earn a split of that two-game series, after the Sunday game was canceled.

UC Irvine junior third baseman/cleanup batter Brandon Lewis (Porter Ranch, Calif.) homered in both games of a Saturday doubleheader split vs. Washington (CB360 Composite #33). He then helped the Anteaters (CB360 #36) win on Sunday to take the Opening Week showdown series vs. a Huskies program that reached the 2018 College World Series. In the three games, Lewis hit 3-for-11 with three total RBI, three runs scored, a double, one walk and no errors at the hot corner. – photo courtesy UC Irvine

Oregon joined UConn and Wright State in posting win(s) over a CB360 preseason Top–10 team, as the Ducks won the opener, 9–4, at [4] Texas Tech (the Raiders rallied to win that series). All told, there were eight Opening Week upset losses suffered by CB360 Top–25 teams, also:

Georgia Southern > at [15] Auburn (7–5; game-2)
at Louisiana (Lafayette) > [18] Texas (8–6; game-3)
South Alabama > at [19] Clemson (4–3; game-3)
New Mexico > [24] Minnesota (11–1; tour. in Surprise, AZ)
Gonzaga > [24] Minnesota (6–5; tournament in Surprise, AZ
… Auburn, Texas & Clemson all won their series, 2–1 … Minnesota also lost to [2] Oregon State, 1–13, and disappointingly finished 1–3 at the Sanderson Ford College Baseball Classic).

>> And here were the 13 other Opening Week upset wins vs. CB360 Top–50 teams:

at Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) > [27] Oklahoma State (5–2; game-2)
Nevada > [30] Missouri State (16–4; at Texas State)
at Texas State > [30] Missouri State (10–0; tournament)
Richmond > at [32] Georgia Tech (7–1;  tournament)
Northwestern (La.) State > [35] at Houston (2–1, in 11 inn.)
at Memphis > [37] Indiana (6–3; game-2)
Liberty > at [39] South Carolina (6–5 in 11 inn.; game–1)
Virginia Tech > at [39] Stetson (5–0)
[43] Sam Houston State > at [39] Stetson (4–3)
Manhattan > at [39] Stetson (5–2)
[45] Illinois > at [41] Wake Forest (5–2; Saturday)
Virginia Tech > [43] Sam Houston State (3–2; at Stetson tournament)
San Francisco > at [46] San Diego State

… most of the losing teams listed above still ended up winning their series, 2–1 … Missouri State went 1–2 at the Texas State tournament … Georgia Tech was 2–1 in its home tournament … Sam Houston went 2–1 at the Stetson tournament.

Of the 24 Opening Week upsets listed above, 12 came from teams playing on the opponent’s field: Oregon, Wright State, Georgia Southern, South Alabama, Richmond, Northwestern State, Liberty, Virginia Tech, Sam Houston, Manhattan, Illinois and San Francisco.

Of the 33 Opening Week series in the CB360 Top–50, nearly all (30) were won by the higher-ranked team, most of them at home and many of them in often clearly mismatched sweeps: [5] Florida vs. Long Beach State … [6] UCLA vs. [44] St. John’s (3–2; 9–0; 11–1) … [7] North Carolina vs. Xavier … [11] Arkansas vs. Eastern Illinois … [12] Florida State vs Maine … [13] Mississippi State vs. Youngstown State … [14] Georgia vs. Dayton … [16] East Carolina vs. Radford … [17] Baylor vs. Holy Cross (4 games) … [23] Southern Miss. vs. Purdue … [25] NC State vs. Bucknell … [26] Duke vs. Lehigh … [28] Texas A&M vs. Fordham … [29] Arizona vs. UMass-Lowell (4 games) … [31] Michigan vs. Binghamton … [40] Dallas Baptist vs. Kent State (MAC favorite) … [42] Louisiana Tech at Southeastern Louisiana … [47] Kentucky at Austin Peay … [48] Tennessee Tech vs. Western Illinois … [49] Arizona State vs. Notre Dame … and [50] Florida Atlantic vs. Cincinnati.

… And 10 of the series were held by the higher-ranked teams, but only by 2–1 margins (all referenced above, series wins by Texas Tech, Auburn, Texas, Clemson, OK State, Houston, Indiana, S.C. & San Diego State).

Virginia Tech so. LHP Ian Seymour

Virginia Tech sophomore lefty Ian Seymour led the way in VT’s 5–0 Opening Day win at Stetson (CB360 Composite #39), logging the first five innings while allowing only two hits, a pair of walks and a hit batter, with seven strikeouts. The Hokies added wins over Manhattan (15–3) and CB360 #43 Sam Houston State (3–2) to impressively win the RyCass Classic. – photo courtesy Va. Tech

There were 14 CB360 Top–50 teams that played in various Opening Week tournaments. Most notably, [3] Vanderbilt, [20] TCU and [21] Cal State Fullerton (all of which opened 2–1)  joined Virginia at the MLB4 Collegiate Baseball Tournament in Scottsdale, Ariz. Vandy’s offense erupted in its first two games (15–9 vs. UVa; 14–9 vs. Fullerton), but TCU tripped up the Commodores on the final day, 10–2. The Frogs also had won on Saturday, 9–4 vs. UVa, but TCU lost its opener, in a 2–0 pitchers duel vs. Fullerton (which closed with a 6–5 win over UVa).

The Sanderson Ford College Baseball Classic (Surprise, Ariz.) also featured multiple CB360 Top–50 teams, with [2] Oregon State jumping out to a 4–0 start, highlighted by the 13–1 win over [24] Minnesota (the Beavs also posted two wins over New Mexico an a Saturday win over Gonzaga). Minnesota’s lone win of Opening Week came vs. the Zags, 8–5.

Out in the sunshine state, [39] Stetson (0–3) failed to capitalize on hosting its own tournament, but [43] Sam Houston State headed home with wins over the Hatters and Manhattan, plus the loss to Va. Tech. The tournament at [41] Wake Forest similarly had a visiting CB360 Top–50 team, as [45] Illinois opened 3–0 with wins over Georgetown, Wake & Sacred Heart (WFU was 2–1).

The other Opening Week tournaments involving CB360 Top–50 teams saw [1] LSU win vs. visiting Louisiana-Monroe, Army (Patriot League favorite) & Air Force … [8] Stanford go 4–0 at the Angels College Classic in Arizona (wins vs. Ball State, Wichita State, Pepperdine & WAC favorite Grand Canton) … [22] Coastal Carolina sweep its home event (vs. VCU, Maryland & Big South favorite Campbell) … [30] Missouri State manage only a 1–2 slate at the Texas State tournament (6–2 win vs. Utah) … and [32] Georgia Tech open 2–1 at home (wins vs. Illinois-Chicago & West Virginia).

Vanderbilt second baseman Austin Martin

Vanderbilt freshman second baseman Austin Martin (Jacksonville, Fla.) made a splash in his college debut week, while facing three top opponents (15–9 win vs. UVa; 14–9 vs. CS360 Composite #21 CS Fullerton; 2–10 loss vs. #20 TCU). Martin reached base in 12 of 16 plate appearances (10 of his first 11), batting 6-for-10 with 5 walks, 9 runs scored & an RBI (plus a triple, double, hit-by-pitch & no errors on 19 chances). – photo courtesy Vanderbilt
