This new feature to College Baseball 360 will highlight the weekends of the Top 50 teams in the nation (CB360 Composite National Rankings) each week throughout the season!
The 2012 season is now underway, with most teams playing at least three games over the season’s first three days. Weather played havoc from Texas across the south, causing a lot of Saturday and Sunday doubleheaders and halted/continued games. Rain forced one of the marquee weekend series, Ole Miss at TCU, to be shortened to just two games instead of three.
Teams like Stanford and Florida made big statements, while teams like Vanderbilt and Virginia have bigger questions after big losses from last year’s CWS teams.

1.Florida (2-1)
Took two of three in their home series with No. 19 Cal State Fullerton. Won game one 7-3. Senior Preston Tucker and freshman early enrollee Taylor Gushue each homered for the Gators. The Gators took game two 5-2. Gushue drove-in a pair, while Austin Maddox earned a 4.0 inning save. He allowed just a hit with 3 K without allowing a run. The Titans won 8-5 on Sunday. Tucker had three hits, including a HR, in the loss. Starter Brian Johnson exited after tossing 4.0 scoreless innings. Jonathon Crawford (0-1) suffered the loss after giving-up 4 ER on 5 hits in 1/3 IP.
2. South Carolina (3-0)
Swept a three game series with VMI. Won game one 2-1. Ace Michael Roth had a no-decision with 6.0 IP, 1 ER, 6 K and no walks. Forrest Koumas 2/3 IP for the save. Won 3-2 on Saturday. Ethan Carter (1-0) won in relief with 4.0 shutout innings, 6 K and two hits. Colby Holmes (1-0) earned the game 3 win with 5.0 shutout IP. L.B. Dantzler had a HR and 4 RBIs. Gamecock pitchers racked-up 35 Ks with just 4 BB on the weekend.
3. Stanford (3-0)
Hosted a three game series vs. No. 11 Vanderbilt. Won The opener 8-3 behind 7.0 strong innings from ace Mark Appel (1-0), who allowed just a run on two hits with 5 K and 2BB. Stephen Piscotty, Eric Smith and Christian Griffiths all homered. Stanford took game two 9-5. Brett Mooneyham (1-0), who missed all of last season with a finger injury, pitched well enough to win. Piscotty hit a first pitch grand slam in Sunday’s finale en-route to a 18-5 win and the sweep. Piscotty had 7 RBIs in the win, while Griffiths added three hits and 4 RBIs. Stanford hit .352 in the three games. Brian Ragira led the way by hitting 7-for-12 (.583) in the series.
4. North Carolina (2-1)
Hosted a three game series with Xavier. Won game one 10-2, but Xavier won game two of Friday’s doubleheader 10-4. The Tar Heels won the series by winning the finale 16-10. They used eight pitchers in that game, including R.C. Orlan (1-0), who earned the series-clinching win with 3.0 scoreless relief innings. Mike Zolk led the way with 4 RBIs in Saturday’s finale.
5. Texas A&M (3-0)
Dominated three home games with Illinois-Chicago. Game one started Friday and was halted with the Aggies leading 7-0. A&M won 10-0 after the game was resumed Saturday. Michael Wacha (1-0) held the Flames scoreless for 5.0 IP with 8 K. They Aggies also won game two 9-2. Ross Stripling (1-0) had 8 Ks in 7.0 IP. Redshirt sophomore Rafael Pineda (1-0) 7.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K 73 pitches/52 strikes gave the Aggies the early look of the best three-man rotation in the country in Sunday’s 7-0 win.
6. Rice (3-0)
Hosted a three game series with No. 38 Florida International. Won 6-2 Friday behind 7.0 strong innings from Austin Kubitza (1-0), who allowed just a run and struckout 8. Shane Hoelscher was 2-for-3 with a HR and 4 RBIs. The Owls took the second game 5-4. Matt Reckling struckout 7 and scattered 4 hits in 6.0 scoreless frames. Jeremy Rathjen had three hits, including a walk-off HR for the win. The Owls capped the sweep with an 8-1 win Sunday behind Craig Manuel’s 3 RBIs.
7. Texas (2-1)
Hosted three games with Duke. The Longhorns took the opener 4-0 and game two 5-3, both on Saturday. Mark Payton had three hits and 2 RBIs in game two, Brooks Marlow plated three with a pair of homers in the first game. Corey Knebel earned saves in both games. He totaled 3.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 runs and 2 K. Duke knocked Longhorn starter John Curtiss out after scoring three runs in the first three innings of Sunday’s 5-2 Blue Devil win.
8. Arkansas (3-0)
Outscored a drastically overmatched Villanova team 42-7 in a three game sweep. Won game one 11-5. All-American candidate D.J. Baxendale (1-0) tossed 5.0 shutout innings. The Razorbacks took game two 13-1, behind the 3-hit and 5 RBI performance from Sam Bates, who homered as well. Sunday saw the Hogs win 17-1. Jacob Mahan had 3 RBIs, while six others drove-in two each.
9. Georgia Tech (3-1)
Played four games at the Coca Cola Classic in Rock Hill, SC. Lost 5-0 to Kent State in their first game. Buck Farmer (0-1) took the loss. His line: 6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 9 K. The Yellow Jackets bounced-back by beating host Winthrop 5-0 Friday night. Matthew Grimes (1-0) fired 7.0 goose egg innings, allowing one hit with 7 K. The Yellow Jackets beat KSU 6-2 and Winthrop 5-2 on Saturday. Paul Kronenfeld had 3 RBIs .
10. LSU (3-0)
Hosted a tournament. Beat Air Force 10-2 in the opener. Kevin Gausman (1-0) allowed a run on four hits in 6.0 IP with 7 K andn 2 BB. The Tigers dismantled Alcorn State 19-0 Saturday. Ryan Eades (1-0) allowed a hit and struckout 8 in 5.0 shutout IP. Paul Mainieri used 20 players in the win. Mason Katz drove-in four, Jared Foster had 3 RBIs and Chris Sciambra had a 2-run triple for his first career hit. LSU beat Air Force again on Sunday 4-0. Kurt McCune (1-0) scattered three hits with 4 K and a BB.
11. Vanderbilt (0-3)
Played a three game series at No. 3 Stanford. The Commodores lost last year’s weekend from its CWS team and it showed. Lost the first game 8-3 after Brad Ziomek yielded 5 ER in 3.1 IP. Saturday starter Tyler Beede (0-1) surrendered 9 R (5 ER) in just 4.1 IP. Four Vandy errors contributed to his woes. The bullpen kept Stanford scoreless after that. Connor Harrell had a pair of HR and 4 RBIs in Saturday’s set-back. The Cardinal won the finale 18-5. Starter Sam Selman (0-1) was tagged for 12 runs (6ER) in 5.0 IP. Vandy batters hit just .204, its pitchers had a 9.38 ERA and the defense committed 11 errors (.904 %) in the series.
12. Florida State (3-0)
Hosted a series with Hofstra. Won game one 9-2. MLB veteran Charlie Leibrandt’s son, Brandon Leibrandt (1-0), earned the win by starting in his first collegiate appearance. He allowed a run on 3 hits in 5.0 innings. James Ramsey, Jayce Boyd and Jose Brizuela each homered. The ‘Noles held off the Pride 10-8 Saturday as Brizuela led the way with 3 RBIs. The Seminoles plated five runs in the first inning of Sunday’s finale, rolling to a 13-6 win. Brizuela had 2 RBIs in the frame and three in the game.
13. TCU (1-1)
Hosted two games with No. 33 Ole Miss. Lost game one 7-4. Sophomore Andrew Mitchell (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing 4 R, 3 ER in 6.0 IP. The pitching staff had 8 Ks with no BB. After Saturday’s game was rained out, the teams decided to play one 9-inning game Sunday instead of two games. TCU won 5-3. Michael Resnick’s 5th inning 2-run double was the game-winner, while Preston Morrison fired 3.1 innings of hitless, shutout relief.
14. Arizona (2-1)
Beat North Dakota State 3-1 in Friday’s opener. Johnny Field was 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Kurt Heyer (1-0) gave-up just a run with 7 K and 2 BB in 7.0 IP. The Bison returned the favor with an 8-2 win Saturday. Konner Wade struckout 13 in a 7.1 IP no decision. The Wildcat bullpen gave-up six runs in 1.2 innings. The Wildcats won 8-0 Sunday to clinch the series. James Farris (1-0) fired a complete game five-hitter with 6 K and no walks.
15. Miami (3-0)
Hosted a series with Rutgers. Won Friday 6-2. Starter Eric Erickson (1-0)-6.0 IP, 0 Runs, 4 Hits, 7 K. Peter O’Brien was 1-for-5 in his Hurricane debut. O’Brien is a senior transfer from Bethune-Cookman. Rony Rodriguez hit a 3-run walk-off HR in the bottom of the 12th Saturday to give the ‘Canes a 4-1 win. The Hurricanes won 9-7 Sunday to cap the sweep. O’Brien smacked his first two home runs as a Hurricane in Sunday’s 9-7 win. He doubled as well, finishing with four hits and 3 RBIs to help Miami cap the sweepl
16. UCLA (1-2)
The Bruins are looking to fill the shoes of last year’s first round draft picks Gerrit Cole and Trevor Bauer. They lost 2-1 to Maryland in Friday’s opener of their three game series. New Friday starter Adam Plutko had a no-decision with 10 K, 1 BB, no runs and five hits in 7.0 IP. UCLA bounced back with a 5-4 win Saturday. Cody Regis had 2 RBIs. Maryland clinched the season-opening series with a 5-1 win in Sunday’s finale. The game was called after eight innings due to travel curfew. Starter Zack Weiss (0-1) took the loss after allowing 3 unearned runs in 5.0 IP. The Bruins committed three errors in the loss.
17. Oklahoma (1-2)
Played a three game series at Pepperdine. Won the opener 4-3. Jordan John (1-0) stepped-in with 3.1 shutout innings of relief. He allowed two hits with a K. The bullpen tossed 4.1 overall shutout frames. The Waves hammered the Sooners 10-0 Saturday. OU starter Jonathon Gray (0-1) allowed just a run, but lasted just 2.2 innings. Pepperdine took Sunday’s finale 8-7. The game was called after eight innings due to travel curfew. Starter Steven Okert gave-up 4 ER in just 3.2 IP, but was spared with a no-decision as John (1-1) suffered the loss.
18. Clemson (2-1)
Took two of three in a home series vs. Alabama-Birmingham. Lost the opener 2-1, but bounced-back to win the series with a pair of Saturday victories by finals of 6-1 and 7-4. Game two starter Dominic Leone fired 6.0 shutout innings with a walk and 4 K. Brad Felder and Richie Shaffer each homered. Phil Pohl homered and drove-in three in the finale.
19. Cal State Fullerton (1-2)
Played a much anticipated three game series at No. 1 Florida in Rick Vanderhook’s head coaching debut. The Titans lost 7-3 on Friday. Starter Dylan Floro allowed 3 runs on 5 hits in 6.0 IP. Game two starter Grahamm Wiest (0-1) allowed 4 ER in 5.0 IP in Saturday’s 5-2 loss. The Titans salvaged an 8-5 win in Sunday’s series finale to give Vanderhook his first win. They scored four runs in both the 5th and 6th innings. J.D. Davis and Carlos Lopez each had 3 RBIs, while Davis homered.
20. Georgia (3-0)
Hosted a series with Presbyterian and won 6-1 in Friday’s opener. Alex Wood (1-0) fanned 7 with no BB in 6.0 IP. Kyle Farmer had 2 RBIs. They took game two 5-4, thanks to two RBIs each from Levi Hyams and Brett DeLoach. The Bulldogs won 11-0 Sunday. Hyams, Colby May and Nelson Ward each plated two.
21. Arizona State (3-0)
Outscored Western Michigan 40-2 in a three game sweep, starting 10-0 in Friday’s opener. Brady Rodgers (1-0) notched 6.0 shutout innings with 7 K and just four hits. Abe Ruiz had a pair of home runs and 6 RBIs. ASU rolled to a 13-0 win Saturday, behind a home run and 4 RBIs from Michael Benjamin. James McDonald and Nathaniel Causey each had 4 RBIs in Sunday’s 17-2 laugher.
22. California (3-0)
Swept a three game series with Pacific in its first true home games since before last year’s NCAA Tournament. Won the opener 9-1 Friday night in Berkley. Justin Jones (1-0) started and won after missing the CWS last year with elbow issues. Game two of the series was at Pacific (Stockton), with Cal winning 6-3. Starter Matt Flemer (1-0) allowed 3 ER in 8.0 IP. Matthews and Knapp each had 2 RBIs. Chadd Krist had three hits and 3 RBIs in Sunday’s 9-3 win back in Berkley. Possibly the longest name in college baseball, Michael Theofanopoul, allowed 2 runs (1ER) in a 5.0 inning Sunday start.
23. Virginia (1-1-1)
Played at the Caravelle Resort Tournament in Conway & Myrtle Beach, SC. Lost to Boston College 5-3 on Friday. 2011 All-American closer turned starter Branden Kline allowed all 5 runs (1 ER) in 4.0 IP. The Cavs got their first win of the season when they beat host No. 41 Coastal Carolina 9-3 Saturday. Jared King and Chris Taylor each homered. They had 3 and 4 RBIs, respectively. They tied James Madison 4-4 Saturday night for the nation’s first tie game of the year. The game was halted after 8 innings due to rain.
24. St. John’s (1-2)
Played at the Big Ten/Big East Challenge in Florida. Lost 11-3 on Friday to Michigan State. The Red Storm beat Minnesota 6-1 Saturday, with Sean Hagan (1-0) earning the win with 6.0 shutout, one-hit IP. He struckout 5 and walked one. SJU fell to Illinois 9-4 Sunday. Jeremy Baltz homered and had 3 RBIs in the loss. Hagan’s start was the longest of St. John’s three starters over the weekend. The other two combined to go just 7.2 innings.
25. UC Irvine (3-0)
Played at Minute Maid Park in Houston. Started Friday with a 5-3 win over Alabama State. Jordan Fox was 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs. The Anteaters downed Southern 5-1 Saturday. UCI leadoff man Tommy Reyes was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, and three Irvine pitchers combined to allow just three hits. The Anteaters capped their perfect weekend with a 5-2 Sunday win over Texas Southern. Reyes was 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs in that game.
26. Stetson (3-0)
Pounded George Washington 19-7 Friday in the opener of a three game home series. Sam Kimmel, Ryan Lashley and Kyle Zech each had 3 RBIs, while Michael Brennan homered and drove-in four. They took game two 7-2 Saturday. Caughel Lindsey (1-0) tossed 7.0 shutout innings, scattering four hits with 4 K. The Hatters capped the sweep with Sunday’s 13-8 win. Ben Carhart had 3 hits and 4 RBIs.
27. Oregon State (3-1)
Opened the season with a weekend series at UC-Santa Barbara and won 7-3 on Friday. John Tommasini was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. The Beavers took game two 3-2 Saturday in a game that was halted after eight innings so the second game, which was eventually halted by darkness, could begin. It will was resumed Sunday in the 10th inning with the Beavers at bat and the score tied 12-12, with the Gauchos winning in 12. The game included four lead changes, two 9th inning comebacks. Michael Conforto hit a 3-run HR in a five-run 6th inning of Sunday’s 8-6 series clincher.
28. Louisville (2-1)
Played at the Big Ten/Big East Challenge in Florida. Lost to Minnesota 7-1 Friday. All-American candidate Justin Amlung (0-1) surrendered four runs (3 ER) in 6.0 IP. They beat Illinois 5-4 Saturday. Adam Engel had three hits and was one of four Cards with an RBI. The Cards finished a 2-1 weekend with a 7-6 Sunday win over Michigan State (1-2). The win came despite four errors. Zak Wasseman homered and drove-in two in Sunday’s win.
29. Baylor (3-0)
Hosted a series with Oral Roberts. Won game one Friday 3-2. After a Saturday rainout, the Bears took Sunday’s game two 3-2 as well. Joey Hainsfurther (1-0) won with 2.0 scoreless innings of relief. Baylor completed the sweep with an 8-1 win Sunday afternoon. While not spectacular offensively, the Bears pitching staff allowed just 3 ER all weekend to the 14 time Summit League champions.
30. Central Florida (3-0)
Swept three home games with LIU Brooklyn, including 13-7 in their season opener. The Knights drew a school record 19 walks in the game. Starting pitcher Chris Franzese walked 10 in 3.2 IP. Four UCF pitchers combined to strikeout 13. The Knights won by finals of 9-1 and 9-1 in two Saturday games. 1B D.J. Hicks had three hits and 3 RBIs in the game two win. He drove-in three thanks to two HR in the finale.
31. East Carolina (3-0)
Swept three games from Wisconsin-Milwaukee, starting with a 4-0 Friday. Kevin Brandt (1-0) struckout 9 in 6.0 shutout innings. The Pirates hammered the Panthers 16-1 Saturday. Jack Reinheimer, Philip Clark and Jay Cannon each had 3 RBIs. Cannon had one of three ECU HR. The Pirates won 16-1 and 6-3 on Saturday. Cannon led the way with 7 RBIs for the weekend. Clark and Reinheimer each totaled six. It’s ECU’s second straight season-opening series sweep.
32. Mississippi State (2-1)
Hosted Washington State and beat the Cougars 6-2 in Friday’s opener. Six Bulldogs each drove-in a run. Chris Stratton (1-0) pitched 4.0 shutout innings of relief, while allowing just a hit for the victory. The teams started game two of the series on Saturday, but it was halted by rain and continued Sunday. It turned into a 13 inning 6-5 Washington State win. The MSU pitching staff posted 19 strikeouts and threw eight straight scoreless innings before the Cougars plated two runs in the top of the 13th. Caleb Reed (0-1) was saddled with the loss despite 9 K in 6.1 relief IP. The Bulldogs rebounded to win the finale 5-4 an error helped lead to three runs in the 8th for the deciding margin. Trey Porter homered and had 2 RBIs.
33. Mississippi (1-1)
Played two games at TCU. Won the opener 7-4. Alex Yarbrough was 2-for-5 with a HR and 3 RBIs. After Saturday’s game was rained out, the teams decided to play one 9-inning game Sunday instead of two games. TCU won 5-3, with reliever Mike Mayers (0-1) taking the loss, despite 8 K and allowing just 2 ER on a hit (a double) in 4.0 IP.
34. Southern Mississippi (2-1)
Hosted three games vs. Nicholls State, losing game one 5-4 on Friday. USM starter Chase Horn (0-1) allowed 4 R, 3ER on 10 hits in 4.2 IP. After a Saturday rain out, the Golden Eagles bounced back with 5-1 and 5-2 wins Sunday. Jake Drehoff (1-0) got the game two win, while James McMahon earned the save after firing 3.0 hitless innings for his first save. Cameron Giannini (1-0) gave the Eagles more great relief, earning the win with 3.0 hitless innings himself in the finale.
35. Georgia Southern (3-0)
Swept a three game series with Tennessee-Martin, winning the opener 7-5. Starter Chris Beck (1-0) struckout 8 and allowed just a run in 6.0 IP and Eric Phillips had 3 RBIs. The Eagles held on after allowing 4 late runs. They took game two 10-1. All-American candidate Victor Roache had 2 RBIs thanks to his first HR of the year. Michael Burruss carried the load in Sunday’s 11-2 win. He had three hits, including two HR, and 6 RBIs.
36. College of Charleston (3-0)
Swept its three game series at South Alabama. Won 5-2 Friday thanks to a pinch hit 3-run home run from Cody Martin in the 8th inning. After a Saturday rain out, Marty Gantt went 4-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs in Sunday’s 6-3 game two victory. Christian Powell (1-0) tossed 6.0 two-hit innings to help the Cougars take the 7-inning series finale 3-0 to cap the sweep. Daniel Aldrich homered as well.
37. Dallas Baptist (3-0)
Fresh-off last year’s Super Regional appearance, Dallas Baptist opened by hosting three games with Southeast Missouri State. They won by finals of 7-6 and 3-2 on Friday. Five players accounted for the Patriot’s 7 RBIs in the two games. Saturday’s finale was called after five innings and DBU up 3-1. Taylor Massey (1-0) allowed just an unearned run in the abbreviated complete game.
38. Florida International (0-3)
Lost 6-2 on Friday at No. 6 Rice. FIU starter R.J. Fondon (0-1) gave-up 3 ER in 5.0 IP. They lost game two 5-4. Jabari Henry had three hits, including a HR in Saturday’s loss. Henry’s HR had given FIU the lead in the top of the 9th, but Rice won it on a walk-off blast by Jeremy Rathjen. Panther pitchers walked 16 batters in the first two games. Rice knocked starter Jose Lazaro out after he gave-up 5 ER in just 2/3 IP in Sunday’s 8-1 loss.
39. Jacksonville (0-3)
Swept in a three game series at No. 50 USC Lost 8-2 Friday. In Saturday’s 11-3 loss, six pitchers combined to walk 8 Trojan batters. Alex McRae (0-1) had the staff’s best start of the weekend (3 ER in 7.0 IP), but still lost. The Dolphins hit .242, committed 10 errors and had a 6.00 ERA in the three losses to the Trojans. Matt Frank has the best weekend at the plate, hitting .400 with a double and 2 RBIs.
40. Oregon (2-1)
Played a four game series at Hawaii, falling 4-1 Friday. The Ducks bounced back with a 3-2 win in 12 innings Saturday. Brett Hambright had 2 RBIs, while Aaron Payne tallied four hits and scored the game’s winning run on a wild pitch. Oregon hammered the Warriors 14-5 in Sunday’s game three. Kyle Garlick homered and J.J. Altobelli had three hits. They both drove-in two. The series finale is Monday.
41. Coastal Carolina (1-2)
Hosted the Caravelle Resort Tournament. Beat James Madison 7-1 Friday. They lost to No. 27 Virginia 9-3 Saturday. Relievers Patrick Corbett (0-1) and Javier Reynoso each allowed 4 ER. The Chants also lost to Boston College 8-3 on Saturday. Starting pitcher Ben Smith (0-1) gave-up 8 runs (3ER) on 6 hits in 3.1 IP.
42. Missouri State (2-2)
Lost 4-1 Friday to Texas Tech and 3-2 to Tenessee Tech at the Red Raider Classic. Starter Pierce Johnson (0-1) fanned 8 in 7.0 IP, but he walked 5 as well in the loss to the Red Raiders. Missouri St. was held to just one hit, for its lowest total in 12 years. The Bears bounced-back to beat Tennessee Tech 10-8 Saturday. Brent Seifert homered in the bottom of the 8th for the deciding runs. They avenged their loss to the Red Raiders with Sunday’s 4-2 win. Reliever Tyler Burgess (2-0) got both MSU wins, after tossing 3.0 perfect innings Sunday.
43. Wichita State (0-3)
The Shockers were rained out Friday at the Texas State Tournament and had to wait until Saturday night to play their first game – a 1-0 loss to Louisiana (Lafayette). The Ragin’ Cajuns scored the game’s lone run in the 8th inning. The Shockers also dropped a 7-1 decision to Santa Clara. They fell 7-4 to Texas State in their last game of the weekend. Starting pitcher Mitch Mormann (0-1) allowed 5 ER in 1.2 IP.
44. Troy (2-1)
Hosted three games vs. Central Michigan, winning 7-3 in Friday’s opener. All-American candidate Tyler Ray (1-0) struckout 8 and allowed just two runs (1 ER) in 6.0 IP. After a Saturday rain out, the team’s split Sunday’s games. Troy took the first game 12-10. Boone Shear homered and doubled with 4 RBIs. The Chippewas salvaged a 14-7 win in the finale. Logan Pierce had a HR and 4 RBIs in the loss. Troy starter Adam Purdy (0-1) gave-up six runs (2ER) in his only inning on the mound.
45. Oklahoma State (0-3)
Swept in a three game series at Cal Poly, starting with Friday’s 6-0 defeat. The Cowboys were 2-for-30 at the plate in the game. Starter Andrew Heaney (0-1) had 10 K and allowed 2 runs (1 ER) in 7.0 in the tough luck loss. OSU Robbie Rea was the lone bright spot in Saturday’s 11-3 loss, going 3-for-5 with an RBI. Cowboy pitchers walked 8 in the loss. The Cowboys lost 6-0 Sunday as well. OSU hit just .188 (19-for-101) and scored just three runs in the three games.
46. North Carolina State (2-1)
Beat Marshal 10-3 in Friday’s opener. Leadoff man Trea Turner was 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs, a double , two runs and a stolen base. The Wolfpack beat Youngstown State 14-3, but lost to Wright State 5-4 in 11 innings on Saturday. Ryan Matthews homered and had 3 RBIs in the win. Anthony Tzamtzis struckout 8 in 4.0 IP in the loss. Sunday’s game vs. St. Joseph’s was rained out.
47. Texas State (1-1)
TSU hosted the Bobcat Invitational, but only got to play twice due to rain Friday and Saturday. They lost to Santa Clara 5-4 Saturday in 13 innings. The Bobcats committed three errors in the loss and gave-up an unearned run in the 13th to suffer the loss. Only one of the five runs TSU allowed was earned. The Bobcats beat No. 43 Wichita State 7-4 on Sunday. Austen Williams struckout four and allowed just an unearned run for a 3.0 inning save.
48. Purdue (3-0)
After being rained out Friday vs. Cincinnati at the Big Ten/Big East Challenge, Purdue beat UConn 9-4 in its first game on Saturday. Blake Mascarello earned the win in relief with 4.0 shutout relief IP. He fanned three allowed just two hits. The Boilermakers then beat Cincy 6-0 later in the day. Lance Breedlove (1-0) fanned 11 and allowed just two hits in 7.0 scoreless IP. The Boilers fell behind Notre Dame (2-1) 4-1, but plated nine runs in the top of the 6th to go on to win 15-8 against its Indiana rival. 3B Cameron Perkins led Sunday’s 14-hit attack with a HR and 5 RBIs.
49. Fresno State (3-1)
Hosted a four game series with Butler, taking the opener 3-0 Friday. Tyler Linehan fanned 13 in 7.2 IP. He scattered five hits with 2 BB. Butler beat FSU 12-9 in 10 innings in the first of their two Saturday games. Justin Charles had 3 RBIs in the loss. Kevin Harlan (1-0) tossed his second career complete game in Saturday’s second game as Fresno downed Butler 6-0. The 6’6 lefty scattered seven hits with 8 K and 1 BB. FSU hammered Butler 17-2 Sunday to take the series as 22 players saw action. Chris Mariscal led the offense with three hits, including a triple, and 3 RBIs.
50. USC (3-0)
Swept a three game series with No. 39 Jacksonville. Won 8-2 Friday. Matt Foat and Kevin Roundtree each drove-in two runs. Brandon Garcia homered and drove-in three in Saturday’s 11-3 victory. Three different players each drove-in a run in Sunday’s 4-3 victory. Adam Landecker was 5-for-8 (.625) and tied with Foat with a team-leading four runs in the series. Garcia led the way with 4 RBIs while hitting .455. The team hit .313, while the pitching staff turned-in a 2.67 ERA.
