TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Virginia has been ranked No. 1 for the fifth straight week in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s NCAA Division I baseball poll.
The Cavaliers (40-4), winners of 21 of their last 23, won two of three against N.C. State over the past weekend and lead the Atlantic Coast Conference with an 18-3 mark. Virginia has a superb 2.31 team ERA with 451 strikeouts by its pitching staff and only 99 walks — a better than 4:1 strikeout to walk ratio. On offense, the Cavaliers are averaging 7.5 runs per game. The defense is fielding at a .983 clip with only 27 errors in 44 games.
Poll Notes: Several other teams have been hot. Connecticut, which leads the Big East Conference with a 13-2 record, has won nine straight. Texas Christian has won seven in a row while Arizona St. has posted six consecutive victories. In key series over the past weekend, Vanderbilt swept a 3-game series against Louisiana St., Florida swept a 3-game series against Alabama, Texas A&M swept a 3-game series against Oklahoma St., Stanford beat UCLA two of three, Arizona St. swept a 3-game series from California, and Miami (Fla.) won two of three from North Carolina. Four teams fell out of the top 30 in Arizona (1-2 last week), Coastal Carolina (2-3), Creighton (1-3) and Gonzaga (1-2). New to the poll is Clemson (25-14), Stanford (19-13), Kent St. (26-12), and St. John’s (21-13).
