TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Virginia has been ranked No. 1 for the second straight week in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s NCAA Division I baseball poll.
The Cavaliers, winners of nine in a row, are off to the best 30-game start in school history. Over the past weekend, Virginia swept a 3-game series against Virginia Tech and outscored the Hokies, 37-8.
Virginia has a remarkable team ERA of 2.00, and the staff has struck out 325 batters while walking only 64. The fielding percentage is .984 with only 18 errors in 30 games. The offense is scoring 7.5 runs per contest.
Poll Notes: Several other teams have been red-hot. North Carolina has won 12 of its last 13 contests. Cal. St. Fullerton has captured eight straight, Vanderbilt six consecutive while South Carolina, Arizona St., Southern Mississippi and Rice have won five in a row. In key top 30 series the past weekend, North Carolina swept three from Clemson, Oregon St. took two of three at Arizona, Southern Mississippi swept a 3-game series from Central Florida, Alabama won two of three from Arkansas, and Georgia swept a 3-game series from Mississippi St. Six teams fell out of the top 30, including Clemson (1-3 last week), Central Florida (1-3), Mississippi St. (1-3), Tulane (0-4), Wichita St. (1-3) and Stetson (2-2). New to the poll this week is Troy (22-5), Rice (21-11), Gonzaga (16-8-1), New Mexico St. (22-6), Connecticut (14-10-1) and Georgia (14-14, 6-3 in Southeastern Conference).
