ASU Moves Up While LSU Drops This Week
TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona St. is ranked No. 1 for the first time this season in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s NCAA Division I baseball poll.
The Sun Devils (15-0) replaced Louisiana St. at the top spot after the Tigers lost two of three at home over the past weekend to Kansas while Arizona St. swept a 3-game series at home against Auburn.
The Sun Devils are hitting .371 as a team and averaging 10.6 runs per game with 49 doubles, 18 triples and 13 home runs to go along with 39 stolen bases. The pitching staff has a superb 2.95 ERA with 152 strikeouts and 44 walks over 15 games.
Poll Notes: Several other schools have been red hot. UCLA is unbeaten at 13-0 after knocking off Oklahoma, Mississippi St. and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi over the past weekend. The Bruins are off to their best start to any season dating back to 1955 and the longest overall streak since 1969. Virginia beat Florida St. two of three games in Tallahassee, Fla. Texas has won six in a row and 12 of its last 13. Georgia Tech. has captured six straight in rolling to a 13-1 overall record. Clemson won three straight over N.C. State as the Tigers sit at 13-1. Other teams in the top 30 with one loss include S.E. Louisiana (15-1), Vanderbilt (14-1), Alabama (12-1) and Virginia Military Institute (14-1). Three teams dropped out of the top 30 this week in East Carolina (1-3 last week), Washington St. (1-2) and N.C. State (1-3). New to the poll this week are Kansas (11-4), Texas A&M (13-3) and Virginia Military Institute (14-1). The Keydets lead the nation with a .381 batting average and have belted 35 home runs over 15 games.
