Early-Season CB360 Primetime Performers (2022)

March 2, 2022
By

CB360’s popular Primetime Performers Weekly Honor Roll has returned for the 2022 season, highlighting players who have excelled on the big stage and in key games versus top opponents.

(Editor’s Note – Weekly conference honors & some national players of the week often do not accurately celebrate players based on the quality of opposition and the significance of the team result. The CB360 Primetime Performers take a different approach and do not rely solely on raw stats. Instead, the following factors are taken into consideration: quality of opponents; contribution to team success/wins; delivering in the clutch (i.e. 2-out hits; late rallies); consistency throughout the week (not simply one big game); bonus for playing on opponent’s field or neutral site; all-around performance (including defensive impact); limited negative plays (Es; Ks; hitting into double plays; runners left-on, etc.); and batting-order position. Other extenuating factors also can be considered, i.e. leadership role; injury status (for player & team); position switches and other obstacles overcome.)

The two Primetime Performers Honor Rolls listed below also will be posted as individual releases, with headshots, action photos & summaries for each player.

Tanner O'Tremba (Arizona)

Tanner O’Tremba (Arizona)

See full listing at bottom of this page for the early-season Primetime Performers, spanning the first two weeks of the 2022 season (Feb. 18–27), with primary focus on results involving CB360 Composite Top-50 teams and other conference favorites.

Later in the season, conference races will help determine other key results considered for the Primetime Performers.

Here are the top honorees for the first two groups of 2022 Primetime Performers:

~ Primetime Players of the Week:
week–1: Arizona sr. RF Tanner O’Tremba (Parker, CO)
week–2: Penn so. 3B Wyatt Henseler (Emmaus, PA)

Luis Ramirez (Long Beach State(

Luis Ramirez (Long Beach State)

~ Primetime Pitchers of the Week:
week–1: Long Beach State jr. RHP Luis Ramirez (East L.A., CA)
week–2: Sacramento State sr. RHP Jack Zalasky (Elk Grove, CA)

The righthanded-hitting O’Tremba slugged his way to a leading role at the State Farm College Baseball Showdown in Arlington, Texas (at big-league Globe Life Field). While batting at the cleanup and 3-hole positions during the weekend, he racked up 17 total bases in 14 at-bats, with a pair of home runs, one triple, two doubles and two singles – as the Wildcats posted wins over Kansas State (8–6), [44] Oklahoma (14–4) and his previous team, [11] Texas Tech (13–2). O’Tremba reached base nine times at the elite tournament, with a pair of free passes on a walk and hit-by-pitch.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Ramirez won the 3–0 opener at 2021 CWS champion [3] Mississippi State, sparking the Dirtbags to a huge road series win. Across his six no-hit innings, the third-year player faced 20 batters (two over the minimum) and allowed only two balls out of the infield, totaling five strikeouts and 11 groundball outs. He retired the first 12 MSU batters before allowing harmless walks in the 5th & 6th (only one advanced, on a two-out stolen base, but the runner was stranded at 2nd).

Wyatt Henseler (Penn)

Wyatt Henseler (Penn)

Henseler emerged as Penn’s leader on its first week competing in 2022, opening its season one week after most of DI baseball. Penn – which played only eight games in 2020 and 14 in ’21 – faced a big challenge at [44] Texas A&M, and the Quakers responded with a stunning series win (2–0; 0–5; 8–6). The righthanded-hitting Henseler sparked Penn from the cleanup spot, batting 6-for-10 with four extra-base hits (home run; three doubles), plus four RBI, a pair of runs scored and two bases-on-balls. Penn’s series win at A&M headlined a notable opening week by the Ivy League (all but Penn did not play in 2021). The league’s teams combined for these seven road wins, despite playing versus opponents that started their season a week earlier:

Penn 2–1 & 8–5 at [44] Texas A&M
Harvard 11–6 at [18] Miami
Dartmouth 6–4 at [41] Louisville
Yale 5–4 at Auburn
Columbia 8–3 at Stetson
Brown 7–6 at Memphis

Zalasky delivered out of the bullpen in tense back-to-back games vs. [14] Long Beach State, as the Hornets won 1–0 (in 10) innings and 5–4, followed by another 5–4 victory for a sweep that landed Sac. State in multiple national top-25 polls for the first time in the program’s Division I history. The six-foot, 185-pound righthander totaled 4.1 shutout innings across the two outings (each 2-plus innings), facing a total of only 16 batters (three over the minimum) with four hits allowed, no walks and three strikeouts. The fourth-year player located 40 of his 55 pitches (73%) for strikes. He allowed only one runner into scoring position, a two-out double followed quickly by a groundout.

Joe Zalasky (Sacramento State)

Jack Zalasky (Sacramento State)

The 29 total Primetime Performers from the first two weeks of the 2022 season include players from five Big 12 teams (Baylor; Oklahoma State; TCU; Texas Tech; West Virginia) … four from the Western Athletic Conf. (Dixie State; Grand Canyon; Sacramento State; Sam Houston State) … three from the Sun Belt (Appalachian State; Louisiana Lafayette; South Alabama) … Big West teams Cal State Northridge &  Long Beach State … and a couple from the Pac 12 (Arizona & Stanford).
