Friday’s Top-50 Results/Links (5/7)

K-State ends Texas win streak (but Friday good day for most CB360 top-50 favorites) …

Perhaps it’s fitting that the 21-game Texas win streak ended in a pitchers duel, as Kansas State edged the Longhorns on Friday night (2-1). K-State soph. LHP Kyle Hunter (8-0) stayed unbeaten after 6.0 soilid inning (R-7H-2BB-HB-6K), while Texas soph. RHP Taylor Jungmann (4-2) suffered the tough-luck loss (5.2IP-2R-H-7BB-4K). Texas had won 17 straight Big 12 Conference games, longest in league history.  (front-page photo courtesy of Kansas State)

Be sure to scroll down/peruse all of this page, for the assortment of team/player info. and various pregame/team/postgame links.

There were 33 games on Friday involving top-50 teams in the CB360 Composite National Rankings – and only six resulted in upsets. In addition to #37 K-State edging #2 Texas, Boston College powered its way past #10 Florida State (10-7) while #47 Oregon State won a 10-inning opener in its Civil War showdown with #20 Oregon (2-1). Friday’s other top CB360 top-50 upsets included: Cal State Bakersfield winning an 11-inning, non-conference game at #21 Arizona (7-2) … Elon holding off #44 Appalachian State, 5-4 … and Fresno State winning big at #48 New Mexico State (21-11).

Elon’s win kept the Phoenix in the derby for the Southern Conference regular-season title while putting a serious dent in Appalachian State’s hopes for finishing atop the league (more below). The Fresno win similarly pushed the second-place Bulldogs (8-5) closer to the league-leading Aggies (13-3) in the Western Athletic Conference standings.

Friday’s action opened 10 head-to-head series between CB360 top-50 teams, with the CNR higher-ranked teams winning eight of those openers (all but Texas vs. K-St. and Oregon-Oregon St.). The other eight showdown series openers played out as follows: #4 Florida 9, at #29 Alabama 3 … #7 Arkansas 11, at #15 Mississippi 4 … #8 UCLA 7, at #50 Washington 2 … #11 South Carolina 13, at #44 Kentucky 9 … #12 TCU 3, at #32 New Mexico 2 … at #16 LSU, #26 Vanderbilt 15 (10 inn.) … #27 San Diego 2, at #43 Portland 0 … and at #33 College of Charleston 13, #39 The Citadel 9.

Several of the games mentioned above pitted league leaders against each other.  TCU (15-3 Mt.West) stretched its lead over New Mexico (12-6) in the Mountain West Conference while San Diego (13-0 WCC) maintained its narrow lead on Portland (11-2) in the race for the West Coast Conference regular-season title (and corresponding automatic NCAA Tournament bid; no postseason best-of-3series in the WCC this season).

At the same time – on the opposite coast – the College of Charleston (18-7 SoCon) crept closer the crosstown rival The Citadel (17-5) in a Southern Conference race that includes no fewer than six current/recent NCAA Tournament hopefuls (Georgia Southern is 16-8, Elon 15-10, Samford 13-8 and Western Carolina 11-9).

Despite its loss, Texas (19-13 Big 12) still is coasting to the conference regular-season title – but Kansas State (11-7) added a key feather in its cap ,as the Big 12 second-place team (11-7). Texas Tech (12-9) was idle on Friday, while fourth-place Oklahoma (11-9) used five home runs to edge in-state rival Oklahoma State (7-6).

Florida‘s win at Alabama kept the Gators (16-6) one game behind fellow eastern-division power South Carolina (17-6) atop the overall Southeastern Conference standings. Four other SEC teams – all in the western division – currently sit above .500 in league play (Arkansas 15-7, Mississippi 14-8, Auburn 13-9 and LSU 12-10).

Ready … Set … Drew!: Friday’s SEC action showcased two of the nation’s top lefthanders opposing each other – with Arkansas sophomore Drew Smyly (8-0) picking up the big victory (6IP-2R-5H-BB-6) while Ole Miss junior Drew Pomeranz (6-1) suffered his first loss of 2010 (6.2IP-4R-9H-2BB-8K). …

UCLA‘s win over Washington was a key victory for the Bruins in the Pacific-10 Conference picture. Both of those teams now are .500 in league play (UCLA 8-8, UW 8-8, as is 9-9 Arizona), trailing behind Arizona State (14-4), Cal (11-7), Stanford (10-8) and Oregon (10-9). Oregon State‘s slumping NCAA hopes received a boost with Friday’s result, as the Beavers now are 5-11 in Pac-10 games (closer to 6-9 Washington State and three games back of the .500 teams).

See below for CollegeBaseball360.com’s recently-expanded gameday page for CB360 top-50 weekend series. The Fri.-Sat.-Sun. pages now include (scroll down to see pregame info. & links):

Seven CB360 top-50 teams were idle on Friday, most notably #1 Arizona State, #3 Virginia and #5 Coastal Carolina – along with #19 Connecticut, #22 Virginia Tech, #24 California and #42 Texas Tech. Coastal will resume play on Saturday (May 8th) with the opener of a three-game Big South series vs. Winthrop. Cal similarly will start a Sat.-Sun.-Mon. series at Washington State, while UConn is set to play a BIG EAST doubleheader vs. Cincinnati on Saturday (series finale on Sunday). Virginia Tech is slated to play non-conference games with Savannah State (Sat.-Sun.).

Three top teams will be idle all weekend. ASU is in the midst of a five-day layoff and will return to action on Monday (May 11), vs. BYU. Virginia is taking nine days away from competition, with the Cavs’ next game slated for May 14 vs. North Carolina. Texas Tech has the longest break of the three (11 days) and also will be back in action on the 14th, vs. Baylor.

Five of this weekend’s series involving CB360 top-50 teams are non-conference matchups: Illinois-Chicago at #10 Georgia Tech … Barry at #13 Miami … Cal State Bakersfield at #21 Arizona … #35 Stanford at Long Beach State … and Dallas Baptist at #40 Texas A&M.
